    I just subscribed. I foster with a local rescue and while we can address many issues with puppies, it can be harder when we take in an older dog who has issues that either developed later in life, or were not addressed when they were small. I like the more positive approach Michelle uses.

    My nearly 9 month old puppy growled at me for the first time! this morning after I tried to take my shoe back that he stole. I am so glad all I did was walk away instead of correcting. It hurt my feelings and I got nervous that he might be becoming aggressive. this video has calmed me down and helped me to understand that more training is necessary and that I must be consistent with this. Thank you.

    Great video! I love the waiter analogy! It really makes so much sense!
    Should I begin dropping off higher value treats while he is eating/trade-up toys, if he is not exhibiting any sign of resource guarding for prevention? Or should I just keep these in my tool belt if I notice resource guarding happening? Thanks again!

    Yes! I’ve noticed my puppy will growl at me if I pick her up to take her out to potty now. It doesn’t happen all the time, but if she’s playing then she’ll growl!

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      This may actually be because of the way you are picking her up. She may need body handling training or desensitization. We always encourage owners to walk their dogs out to the potty spot instead of carrying them unless it's not safe or their pup can't manage stairs just yet.

    Thankyou it took so many days of resesrch and trial and error to get to this point. Wish I had this video weeks ago. I have a 6m old pyrenees X he has resource gaurded since he was 11 weeks old. Has bitten my husband air snapped at the kids and yesterday myself(TOTALLY my fault as i forgot to trade up and just went to grab my daughters glove). I 100%agree with not touching the food or petting neither made sense. Giving him privacy while eating has been good. So I know not to correct growling but how do you correct biting?

    Thanks for this. We have two gsd brothers who randomly fight (fight not play) at 5 months old and it’s always in the kitchen for no reason. They’re separated to eat and with toys/ bones to help avoid this problem but it happened for the second time today & I’m assuming it’s resource guarding

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes we don't know what the reason is, but there is always a reason. Good idea separating them for meal times. I would make sure bones or other items they find valuable (balls, rope toys etc. ) are picked up and given separately.

    Ok.. my 5 month fox pom has NEVER showed aggression. I found him chewing a not safe plastic ball (ripped the sock it was tied into, I didnt think he would be able to do that so I know its my fault to begin with) he had the ball in pieces and I needed to take it away as he was almost eating it. He went crazy! Growled bared teeth and tried to bite me. I had to take it away no matter what bc it was a danger to him. I used a firm authoritative voice and before reaching for the ball pieces i made a fist offered it to him palm down while I told him “leave it”. He made eye contact with me and I didnt look away until he did and he backed down and moved away. Then I had no problem taking away the plastic. It seemed to feel as if he submitted to me? I dont know if I did this wrong. I get that this ball was probably like finally he got it out of this sock and its his treasure now..This is the first time this happened to me.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It would be better to trade the dog with a high value item for the item he has in his mouth. This will teach him to feel good about giving up the item and he won't try to hold onto it.

  • @destinyreturns4885

    Just found this today and want to thank you for your video. I've been having problems with my 8 month old Siberian Male. On several occasions he has picked up a tissue or sock on our walk and then quickly tries to eat it. I will tell him to drop the item and when he doesn't I have attempted to take it away and he has actually bit me several times now. There has been no other aggression in any way whatsoever. I have had huskies for approximately fifty years, and not one has ever acted in this manner, so I've been beside myself. I'm going to attempt to use your trade up method and start working on that technique immediately.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definately add "trade-offs" to your daily list of games to play. If things persist, it will be best to seek out help from a behaviorist, different than a trainer.

    My puppy when she plays she starts biting everything and everyone and also growls and jump on them. She is only 3 months but she is an American Bulldog of almost 25 lbs. Not sure how to correct this. She knows she is not supposed to bite but sometimes she will get your legs from behind when you don’t see her coming. She does that out of play and excitement 100% of the times she is never really attacking anyone on purpose.
    Other than that she is a sweetheart 🐶❤️

    We hand fed, put down treats while he ate or had a chew and tried doing a lot of trading from when our puppy was young. Now at 9 months he’s resource guarding more and more (not bothered at all by his food bowl and doesn’t guard that) but it’s not consistent - one day he will be fine with a chew sat on our lap chewing it, the next day he will guard it. Our biggest issue is litter - we try and avoid it and he’s fairly good with leave it but if we don’t spot and he picks up litter he will often guard it. It’s obviously super risky (the other day it was a plastic bag) - I really hope we can work through it before something bad happens or it escalates ☹️

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog

      You may need to consult with a positive reinforcement behaviorist to come into your home and assess the situation.

    Tonight my 5 month old Dalmatian pup flipped a switch and lunged at my 11 yr old Weimaraner. It was so fast, she launched herself off the couch. Totally freaked me out. After watching your video, I think that perhaps A- they all (2 Weims 11 & 13 and the Dal pup) had tartar buster chews. The 13 yr old took hers to her crate and stayed there. The pup hopped up on the couch and the 11 yr old went to her crate but then (and she sometimes does this) she left her crate with her chew and was trotting over to the floor bed in front of the fireplace. Hardly close to the puppy but but she just snapped and launched at her. B- maybe pup was hungry which made the chew even higher value? The 11 yr old has been the dominant dog but I’ve recognized that will be challenged by the pup, I just didn’t expect it to be like this. So, I’ll be increasing the pups meal intake, and learning to trade up maybe but how does one keep something of even higher value on the ready? No more free range tartar busters. Those will be crate treats from now on as well. I feel so bad that this happened and I wasn’t prepared for it and I scolded the puppy. Ugh. I’ll be reading up and watching more training videos for sure!! I can’t be having this!

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We advise our students not to pick their dogs up, espeically if they were sleeping. When our dogs growl they are communicating with us. If we don’t listen it could escalate into something more serious, like a bite. Just like we don’t enjoy being picked up without our permission, it’s important that we do not invade our puppy’s space and pick them up without their consent.
      We also want to teach puppy owners to be “inviters” not “invaders”. This means we invite the puppy into our space, rather than invade theirs. Inside our online course we have several videos and resources about reading body language and how to teach our puppies to do what we ask them to do. This video on body handling can give you some good tips on how, and when, to pick up a puppy, and our online course can give you even more details on this important topic!

    My 6 month old cavapoo has been starting to growl at me and open her mouth a bit only at me. She does this only at night time when she’s tired and laying down trying to sleep. She only does this when I am attempting to pick her up from her position to move her to her bed. My fiancé can pick her up and she gets no growls, only I do. She’s a very happy and playful dog. Doesn’t growl ever. Only under this specific circumstance.

    Respect the dog's needs. I've had a one year old dorkiest for 1.5 weeks and she has bit my daughter and me. It was while we were being affectionate. Now we know she wants only short bits of affection. I go to sleep with her on the bench at the end of the bed and wake up with her spooning. She needs to get used to us on HER TIME, not ours'.

    My puppy growls when we're playing with toys. I'm not sure if it's resource guarding because he does drop it when I ask, will fetch it when I throw, and bring it back. He also started "talking back" at me? Like when I'm teaching him a trick and he doesn't get the treat as fast as he wants, he snaps at me and barks. Or if I tell him no, he barks. He never hurts me with biting or the lunging. (He's actually improving with bite inhibition). But I really don't know if these are aggressive behaviors I need to address or it's just puppy play. Also, will he grow out of it?

      These do not sound like aggressive behaviors whatsoever. Growling during play is completely normal and acceptable, and a frustrated bark whenever a puppy isn't understanding what you're asking is also generally expected and not a sign of aggression or resource guarding. /notmad

      In those moments you need to do what is safest for your dog, so you may need to take the object out of their mouth. Continue to work on trade up outside of the time you need it so your pup can drop things for you easily when that moment comes.

I have a niece and i dont want that kind of dog around her. He is a new dog, had him for about two weeks but he is 2 years old. Please help me out!!

      Your best bet is to consult with an animal behaviorist who uses positive reinforcement techniques! This kind of thing will take longer than a week to work on, but with the help of a professional, it is possible to work on this!

      Many new puppy parents are concerned about aggression, but often it’s normal puppy behavior, which includes nipping, biting, barking, and growling. Sometimes these behaviors are something humans want to work on, which is normal. This workshop can give you some good information on how to address these behaviors and the online course can give you the specific lessons to start your training.

    Please help.. I have a 10 week old Great Dane. She has been showing aggressive behavior. But not towards food or items. She will be laying down and if we go up and pet her she will growl and snap at us. If she is digging and I gently guide her away she will growl and snap at me. Not once, it’s constantly until I leave her alone. The whites of her eyes will show and she will just start going crazy. She does it multiple times a day but other times she is so loving and kind and gentle and loves to cuddle. Please help, I have young kids and I’m wondering if I made a huge mistake. Is it safe to keep her or what should I do. I’m in desperate need advice.

      This is definaltey something that requires more information. We don't want to offer up the wrong advice. Are you part of the Pro-Level program we offer where you can chat with the trainers about situations like this?

      @@HowToTrainADreamDog no I’m not. But before I spend the kind of money that I do not have. I need to know if this is something that can be fixed using this program or do I need in person professional help. I literally dont have the money to spend at the moment. I just want to make sure she can be helped. Is it reversible? The first week we had her she didn’t do any of this aggressive behavior. She was loving and playful and she still is sometimes but it seems every day we have a few issues with her growling and trying to bite us. I’m not sure what changed.

      It sounds like you would really benefit from having a trainer come to your home to work with you and your pup. Unfortunately, the training industry is not well regulated and you have to do your research to make sure the trainer you work with uses fear free and positive methods based in behavioral science. Credentials to look for in a trainer would be Fear Free Certified, CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed) and/or CBCC-KA (Certified Behavior Consultant Canine-Knowledge Assessed.) Here is a directory that might be helpful:
      www.ccpdt.org/dog-owners/certified-dog-trainer-directory/
      Or one other option in case you need more resources:

    I have gotten such mixed reviews. I was told by a trainer that I should be able to pet my pup, touch their food, and take it away without any resistance. I was following the protocol from the book MINE! and doing hand feedings, petting, and trading up. She does awesome but as soon as I go back to using the bowl on the ground and she will growl if I touch her food.
    I have felt like a failure.

      When I was raising my kitten we built him up till we could have him sit in our lap and eat while we pet him. Animals usually should because it shows their comfort but if they show aggressive behavior with it then it's not a go ideA. At least from what I've seen with trainers, just depends on how your dog already is.

    The more I (try to) watch these dog training videos the more I think no one knows what they are talking about. Why "don't try to correct a growl" ?? Like so many other examples, no reason, no alternative. If growling is the clue a bite may be coming, if the dog understands "no growling," and if the dog responds to that command, WHY NOT try to correct growling? I don't expect an answer.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your dog may respond to that command in the moment, but like all aversive techniques, it's a quick fix in the moment and does solve the long term problem. Suppressing a natural instinct will result in aggression and behavior problems down the line. Check out 4:54 for alternative training techniques to help with this behavior.

    If a channel has zero bad reviews and most of their subscribers mysteriously have zero content on their own channels, they are not to be
    trusted. TH-camrs have 100% control over every comment so watch this one miracolosly dissapear as fast as it was posted. She has no actual
    dog training videos, just talks theory and her favourite thing to do is trash the trainers that get actual results.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We do appreciate you stopping by to leave us your feedback. Actually what you should look for is a channel's growth over time and not some pop-up channel that only posts videos to get likes. As you can see from our channel we've grown steadily over an almost 2 year period, posting relevant advice consistently each week. Each of our 95 videos contains tips that are actionable or useful to the viewer. Our TH-cam channel is the "WHAT" you need to teach your dog while our actual online course is the HOW-To where we demonstrate each skill you can teach your puppy while we work with real dogs in our videos. At no time do we ever bash any trainers. You can easily find us online in either of our two Facebook groups, on our other platforms such as Pinterest, Instagram and even TikTok. We wish you and your pup all the best!

      @@HowToTrainADreamDog In every video I have seen there is something like "I am sure you have heard...." and then subtly she trashes methods that work. It is so upsetting that when people don't see results in their dog and they watched videos and believed the reviews were real (I noticed no denial of that in your message) they actually blame the dog and get rid of it. Those little jabs are constant ...don't need to teach your dog not to bite when you put hand near his food, don't need to walk in front of him (dog walking in front and pulling tells the other dog by his body posture that he is attacking, Michelle is fostering attack dogs), don't need to be the leader, don't have to make sure you go out the door first (she laughs that is old school yet the result of being a leader is transformational). Why the heck would you NOT want to guide your dog to make choices that work in our human environment. Dogs can make the rules when we live in the bush in a den, not in this strange place they have no instincts or preparation for. P.S. Nothing of what you said denies you didn't purchase subscribers and or manipulate the reviews. 100 subscribers only $5. 1000 subscribers only $45.00 people have a right to know this
