How To Develop Food Boundaries with your dog! | Dog Nation

  • In this episode, I help a couple whose German Shepherd won't calm down.
    The couple is 6 months pregnant and wants to prepare their German shepherd for their child.
    What are the key factors in prepping for when you have a dog and baby a part of your family pack? How do rules, boundaries, and limitations apply? During the #dogtraining exercise that you will see in his video; notice some of fundamental #dogpsychology moments. The most important one is energy and how I teach the couple how patience is key in getting their German Shepherd into a calm and surrender state.
    Many times, the simplest thing to understand when you train a dog is first to understand psychology. This helps to remove the assumption of dog aggression or when people tend to go straight to think they have an aggressive dog.
    Watch how I am able to address this issue and be sure to stay tuned for my new show premiering July 30, 2021 on National Geographic.
    César Millan: #BeterHumanBetterDog
    Remember if you control the nose of a dog you control 60% of the brain.
    We use food to demonstrate how to create rules, boundaries, and limitations.
    It is crucial to develop these rules around food.
    As the Pack Leader it is our job to WALK our dogs and not let our Dogs WALK us.
    Calm and Confident.

    My family had a mutt growing up and I had that dog trained to the point that she would only take food when I gave her permission. I remember when my mother tried to give Angel a plate to lick clean and she looked at me to make sure it was ok. I also had a friend who was scared to leave his food on the coffee table and I showed him how good my dog was by putting a plate of steak and potatoes right in front of her and walking away. Angel passed 6 years ago, she was the best dog I ever had

      @@dhavalrana5902 to tell you the truth, she was a bullet proof dog. I spent a fair amount of time training her to walk in a heel being right next to me. We taught her how to roll over and play dead. I would spend time placing plates of food in front of her and telling her to leave it. But I'm not sure it was my skill that made her a great dog but rather that she is was a great dog despite my ability

      Thanks for all you do to help not just correcting bad habits of dogs or a dog's behavior pattern but also correcting the owners behavior too. Because you also help them truly see how dogs react and see the world from an animal perspective not a human one. Dogs go by smell, hearing sight and instincts. Watching your videos gives people the insight into the dog world and truly understanding their dog in a better way. God bless Cesar and take care.

      @@markfuller I’m aware of the issues he had but I really think that the Hollywood types got to him. He had a lot of “haters” saying he was abusive to the dogs so I think they pushed Cesar to use a softer gentler approach.
      I also noticed how edited this video is. Unless you already know Cesar’s ways you will learn little from this. This dog was just a pup that needed to be told no. He was easily corrected or they edited out quite a bit. Putting that haltie on him just distracted him. They didn’t show what happened after he got used to it. He also didn’t teach the lady to use the right energy. He has gone to using “training” and tools instead of the energy that actually works. I was shocked to see him advise a haltie. That does not teach the dog you are leader. It just makes it difficult for him to pull. The Illusion collar he used to give to people just held the leash in the right place. The owner still had to lead. I’m very disappointed in where he has gone and I’m glad I learned from his original methods.

    I watched Cesar's videos since I was a teenager, I love his work with animals and humans. I've seen a man the other day, walking his dog without a leash, she had a collar, but was without the leash. His dog, a female pit bull, was such a wonder while interacting with me. What I've noticed about his behaviour, when this man said his goodbye, he walked like Cesar does when he is walking a dog, and he made about 20 steps in front of me, stopped, made her sit, then waited a few seconds, then he gave her some dry dog food (a treat). Such an amazing experience to see in real life. I am in awe of people who have mastered control in such a way that an animal, such as a pit bull, that you can see is sooo well manered and she was watching him all the time and walked next to him with such obedience.... Cesar and Jason Galaxy (The Cat Whisperer) have made me soo happy with their videos and with allowing us to see their work. It's a humbling experience.

      In case you don't get another response, try what you see here in the video. You have to be the new pack leader and control the food, maintain the dog's calm and focus, get the dog ample exercise, and hold firm as you wait for the dog to surrender to your leadership.

    • @Hayden11
      @Hayden11 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm in no way a expert, just offering advice, maybe you can have somebody who's physically able to manage the dog with you and do the initial phase of the training until the dog is calm and isn't doing the behaviour you want to get out of him. Then when he's calm, you take over.
      This might not work, your dog might see the friend as the pack leader, but I think it might be a good start to introducing routine and what behaviour is good/bad.
      Sorry if this doesn't help or is rude. Hope you're well ^^

    • @SuperrrSid
      @SuperrrSid 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Watch enough of Cesar's videos, and you will know what to do.
      #1. Walk the dog like a pack leader. Everything starts here. Plenty of Cesar's videos will show you how. Tip: You always walk out FIRST; never let your dog out first.
      #2. Claim the food. If you can get your dog to NOT eat the food on the ground like Cesar did here, you are golden.
      #3. Apply this to everything else.
      Oh, and never give affection or hug him whenever he does something you don't want him to. This will only encourage the disruptive behavior, such as hugging him when he barks saying "aw it's okay it's okay".... this will only encourage him to bark further. A stern PSS and a touch like what Cesar did here will do the trick every time he does something you dont' want him to.

    I have a 15 year old German Shepherd and they are so easy to train because they are extremely smart! My dog doesn t hear that good anymore and because of that when i say “SHHHH” he doesn t hear me anymore,so instead of screaming so even the neighbours can hear me,i clap my hands 2-3 times and that s it,he knows that he has to stop barking. They are truly smart and amazing guard dogs,in these 15 years our never stopped shocking us with how smart he is…we love him so much!

    The halti changed my life with Samoyed puppy. We finally graduated to very pleasant walks without it and sometimes switch to it indoors when he’s acting up (still 1yr old so he has some lingering lunacy at times lol). Absolutely recommend it as long as you don’t get rough with it.

      Yes, and it makes me weary of these videos. Cesar is wonderfully non judgmental but I am maxed out on these selfish dummies. I am work with a non profit as a foster dad and I can promise you - 100%- they will be one of those jerks who is "looking for someone to re-home our dog!!!" after they have ruined him. Most people don't deserve dogs.

    • @oui2826
      @oui2826 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@brentshirley477 yes exactly. You should have some sort of licence to own any pet. Based on a few questions and evaluation of your lifestyle, schedule etc. These dudes wanted a rabbit, not a German shepard

    • @maike0212
      @maike0212 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Absolutely. If we do the math, she was already 2 months pregnant (!) when they decided to get a GSD puppy that they obviously have NO idea how to raise. I get so angry about that amount of stupidity. An untrained German Shepherd is a weapon. Get a stuffed animal instead. Because in the end, it’s the dog who has to suffer. One wrong move and he’s in the shelter, though he was never even given the chance to learn. :(

    All it takes is consistency, you can't make exceptions to the rules. My cousin's dog would sit in front of whoever had food and whine and cry and it was SO annoying. When my mom got her dog, I established 1) you are NOT on the couch when people eat 2) IF they let you, you don't sit on the same cushion and 3) lay down and shut up. If he does well he sometimes will get a treat or get to lick the plate. It's going on 8 years, I've never made an exception and he's never caused a problem.
