How Does Leprosy Damage the Human Body?

  • Leprosy brings to mind images of biblical beggars, lonely leper colonies, and seems, for some, to have all but disappeared into the history books. But leprosy stills haunts many parts of the world and there’s an absurd amount that we don’t know about the disease.

    SICK is a new series that looks at how diseases actually work inside our body. We'll be visiting medical centers and talking to top researchers and doctors to uncover the mysteries of viruses, bacteria, fungi and our own immune system. Come back every Tuesday for a new episode and let us know in the comments which diseases you think we should cover next.

    So if it can grow outside of animals then if every person and every animal with leprosy was quarantined until they died we could essentially rid the world of it?

    • @lasarith2
      @lasarith2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, because that still leaves the Question of where did/does it come from, (just because they can’t grow it in a lab doesn’t mean it can’t survive outside in another way ~ ground/animal, or - even if it’s something within humans themselves.

    • @inspectorsteve2287

      @@lasarith2 they said in the video it can't survive outside of animals.

      Inspector Steve well then it’s getting transferred by something, also ground infers living organisms in the dirt .

  • @EgadsNo
    @EgadsNo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Lesions are not really a symptom of leprosy but a symptom of the associated infections from not being able to feel pain and letting wounds turn gangrenous.

    If M.Leprae breaks down the mitochondria, could it not be feasible that they require mitochondria to survive and grow? Maybe that's why they can only survive in cells.

    Could there be a connection between leprosy and tryptophobia?? I’m wondering if that’s why some people (myself included) have a fear of pores/small holes, and I’m speculating leprosy could be behind the phobia.
