  • The measles virus has been around for thousands of years, and is one of the most contagious diseases known to man. Its outbreaks have been responsible for the deaths of millions of people. Take a deep-dive into the disease and the science behind it with Seeker's SICK
    ____________________
SICK is a new series that looks at how diseases actually work inside our body. We'll be visiting medical centers and talking to top researchers and doctors to uncover the mysteries of viruses, bacteria, fungi and our own immune system. Come back every Tuesday for a new episode and let us know in the comments which diseases you think we should cover next.

Vaccines work for the most part, but saying you can't get infected if your vaccinated is just wrong. Also, sometimes, but very rarely, vaccines can cause serious problems. Some people have died from vaccines. But less then 0.1% of the time. Light side effect are more common.

In pregnant women it can course low birth weight, premature labour, vision loss or blindness to the baby, for the baby to have hearing loss or be deaf. Or course miscarriages and stillbirths.
For every 1,000 children who get measles, one or two will die from it.

Saying "if you get vaccinated, you'll be fine" is dangerously misleading.
Vaccinated people still get sick and are contagious, but they suffer minor symptoms and get better faster (getting better at all is sometimes a generous change).
Even people who are vaccinated should keep doing best hygiene practices like washing hands before eating and after using the toilet. Also, try not to touch eyes and mouth if hands aren't clean, and be mindful touching things people share after you do.

@@tadah5319 Immunity varies. It is not always short. Immunity can last a lifetime.

    • @philipmcniel4908
      @philipmcniel4908 ปีที่แล้ว

@@tadah5319 I know this is an older comment, but the truth about those mutations is that...well, it depends a lot on what you mean. You see, there are segmented and unsegmented viruses, and the unsegmented ones do not change nearly as rapidly. Segmented viruses, such as the flu, can swap parts, if you will (e.g. if you get infected with H1N1 and H3N3 at the same time, you can start producing H1N3 and H3N1 as well). This ability means that segmented viruses can "mutate" really quickly, since they're not really mutating a lot of the time, just swapping. Unsegmented viruses tend to change more gradually on average, because they have to actually mutate (in a way that doesn't completely disable them) in order to change.

    1. From the standpoint of pure logic: There is not necessarily a reason they can’t mandate any part of healthcare. I’m just saying it doesn’t follow that if the government involves itself in one part of healthcare it must involve itself in any other part of healthcare. A better question might be “why don’t they...?” I suppose the ultimate answer to that is that the people allow or disallow them to do so with their vote (ideally, of course since the electorate is often misinformed or not paying attention thing do slip by them)
    2. As previously stated the “indirect public health hazard” standard is too broad. It would allow the government to regulate everything since all of our bad choices affect our health and our health indirectly affects all the other citizens eventually through some long chain of events. The line has to be drawn somewhere in terms of how proximate an event needs to be in the chain of casualty to justify government intervention. Traditionally the government has limited self to direct or very nearly direct causation, sometimes this is shortsighted of them, though not necessarily in this case.
    3. “Safe”, “happy” etc. are vague terms, at any given time the citizens choose what those words mean and enforce it with their vote (again, ideally). They do not always choose well.
    4. We do disagree on the false dichotomy issue. Government intervention in healthcare is not an all or none proposition in my view. I have done my best to explain this above. As previously stated the government’s authority stems from the will of the citizens and their vote (ideally).
    5. I have already opined on the vague meaning of words in charter-style documents. I will add that in the particular case of suicide, the right life and the right to happiness are ostensibly at odds with each other. Of course there are deep psychological and sociological factors that come into play when trying to resolve this dilemma in specific instances, this is a different discussion though.
    6. I do think private health insurance should be done away with. Another complex topic.
    7. Your last point was bit much to be honest. I’m not sure of the certainty or ramifications of all that. I do think we are damaging the environment and we should take steps to mitigate that, but to be honest you are battling human nature there. Humans and most animals are driven to consume resources and are not good at resisting that drive even when it becomes self destructive. Some of the scenarios you posit sound like natural disasters on a grand scale, the government is likely not equipped to circumvent those, humans as a whole may not be able to to that. That’s just life I think, 99%of all species that have ever existed are extinct, humanities time will come as well. We should do our best to avoid bringing it upon ourselves but after that there isn’t much we can do. Not sure about the bunkers, sounds a bit conspiratorial to me to be honest. Not sure what the point is of the government surviving while the rest of us die, there is no power without people to wield it over; and I’m not sure why they would want to condemn themselves to live the rest of their lives in a bunker or a post-apocalyptic hellscape anyway.

How about the standard of protecting children's rights? If you want to argue that it's a dangerous precedent for herd immunity to be a good reason to mandate vaccinations, then what about the right of the child to be healthy? We don't allow JW parents to refuse their children blood transfusions and surgeries. Why allow parents to refuse their kids vaccinations? A parent's right to make choices for their child ends where the child's right to life and good health and safety begin. As for "safety" being a bit vague, welcome to life. A lot of concepts used in decision-making including policy-making are a bit vague and discussions about where to draw lines will inevitably continue as long as there is a human race to have those discussions.
Also, this fear of a slippery slope is a bit ridiculous. The government could do anything if people in the public at large and people in the right places in society held certain opinions. I see no reason why a change in those opinions to allow vaccines to be mandatory would necessarily lead to everything being controlled, especially given that people don't want everything to be controlled and if they did not having mandated vaccinations wouldn't have prevented them from adopting that particular opinion (of controlling everything) anyways.

GMO's are so good, if they can modify measles what can possibly go wrong! And everyone here is so right! Mandate vaccines, an idea so good it has to be mandated!

I am pro-vax. But it doesn't seem reasonable to tell at a person, "hey, you wouldn't have those problems if you had just done what I told you to do," then expect them to listen to your explanation. Good information, just doesn't seem effective to attack people from the get-go, when they already have a fearful emotion toward the idea of vaccinations.

Josh Lockie It's never a big deal when characters get hit on the head with an anvil on Looney Tunes either. TV shows aren't meant to accurately portray real life. I just watched a news clip about that episode and the actress that played one of those kids said when she actually got the measles it was much worse then what was portrayed on the show. The people who made the show weren't anticipating a bunch of retard anti-vaxers taking the show seriously decades later and back when we didn't have vaccines for certain illnesses, we had no choice but to get the disease and hope that it didn't have complications. Pretty much everyone in my age group has had chickenpox, but we would have chosen the vaccine if one had been available at the time.
