  • Welcome!
    Today's video is a reaction/analysis of Tom Jones' 1967 performance of the song "I'll Never Fall In Love Again". The vocal nerd in me lives for songs in this style that are done right. Join me to find out exactly what Tom Jones does to pull off one heck of a performance that is as moving as it is vocally impressive.

    AS A JUDGE on "The Voice UK" in 2019, he was the only chair-turn for a kid named Peter Donegan who's DAD wrote that song for Tom and toured with him in the early years. They ended up singing that song together LIVE and impromptu during the audition... PRICELESS reunion with the son, and one of those "Full Circle" moments. it's on YT

    My dad used to work on a milk round (delivering milk in the early hours to homes) as a pre-teen with Tom, in the village of Tonteg, near Pontypridd, South Wales. They both sang at local miner's and workingmens clubs in their teens, as did many people back then (50's and 60's). Tom went on to international fame, my dad not so much.

Everyone who met Tom said he was a really good guy, he moved up to St.Georges Hill in Weybridge then Las Vegas the rest is history. Top bloke and great singer and wonderful showman.

    Tom Jones is from Wales. He was quite the heart throb in his heyday. Young (and not so young) women in the audience would literally lose their minds, start throwing their panties on the stage, their hotel room keys.... it was a sight to behold. He still has that power 50 years later as you can testify. Getting weak in the knees? Great song, Great looks, Great sound, Great performer. Sex appeal. Enough to make you swoon. He watches TH-cam and has thanked others for their reaction. Maybe he might see yours as well. I enjoyed your reaction more than most.

    I heard another TH-cam reactor describe Tom Jones as a "Baritone Cannon". Couldn't have come up with a better description of him no matter how hard I tried. Add in the fact that this was before decent mikes and auto-tune, and you simply have to respect the talent in this man. I love how you never hear him take a breath until he wants you to, because he uses it to add emotion to the performance.

    • @anttiojanpera9810
      @anttiojanpera9810 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And the only compressor and dynamic "technology" is how or you want the microphone distances when singing. At the time of the devastation, the artist had to master it. T Jones old video recordings it hops easily.

    • @shanemartin8904
      @shanemartin8904 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He wasn't a baritone. He could hit the Tenor High C when he was younger, before dropping one semi-tone early in his career to B4. He spent most of his career as a High-baritone, and was consistently able to sing around F4-A4 which is quite high for a man( I'm a baritone, my high notes that I can sing all day are between D4-F4, I max out at A4. I really struggle to even hit his notes without feeling tension after 2 or 3 of his songs). I believe by listening to his later songs that he is almost certainly now a Baritone, I'd be very surprised if he could hit the Bb4 or A4. He has remarked that his voice on the lower end has become richer/ lower probably being able to touch E2. Even as I listen to this song he never struck me as a garden variety baritone at that point in his career, he had a lighter tone to his voice, but you are correct the dude was a cannon, and to my understanding un-trained. The dude was gifted, period

      Wales is the land of Myrddin/Merlin the magician, of dragons (as on the flag),, the Mabinogi and Arthurian tales, even Rupert Bear and the flopsy bunnies lived in Wales, and Harry Potter- i seem to remember- flew over Abergavenny (Rowling was brought up by the Welsh border), Alice of Alice in Wonderland would holiday in Wales, Tolkien loved the ancient language, picked Welsh names for Lord of the Rings, CS Lewis, who wote the Narnia tales, was of Welsh parentage, comedian Tommy Cooper, born in Caerphilly, performed magic- to comic effect, Roald Dahl was born in Wales ...the blue stones at Stonehenge with magical healing properties were amazingly transported- or moved themselves- a long distance from the Preseli hills in Wales...the Llangernyw yew tree, which has an ancient spirit, is thousands of years old. I do feel magic in Wales.

      I have to agree with you, there is something magical about the Welsh and music. My father and his family were from Wales, and I grew up listening to Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, and Engelbert Humperdinck, as well as other Welsh and British artists. I have seen performances by Sir Tom and Dame Shirley in their 80's, and the power and beauty of their voices still gave me goosebumps.

      He wasn't a crooner. Most crooners stay within a certain octave and sing with a constant degree of softness e.g Dean Martin. Tom Jones smashed his way through 3 octaves nightly and whilst he may have had a softer side to his voice, he was renown for his power and range

I didn't appreciate Sir Tom when I was a child, but now I'd have to say he's in my top two of all time... a singer with all the pieces in the tool box. We use to then watch his TV show. I wanted to personally thank you for reacting to Tom Jones. Many Vocal coaches like yourself seam to be more interested in the opera/juke box/ rock genre. Others that react to his songs are very nice but lack the vocal background. You are the first to take the time to break down his singing style, and explain how he makes those sounds. I would love you to react and comment to more of his songs. Such songs as I WHO HAVE NOTHING, DELIILAH, WITHOUT LOVE, TILL, GREEN GREEN GRASS OF HOME. There are so many! ...and this is where my life long love of music and magnificent voices began, Tom Jones began it all for me. I was 10 here ('67), watching Tom then The Tom Jones Show ( '69 - '71) and I was on heaven. Now it's still Tom and many other fantastic voices right up to now with Dimash Kudaibergen. Please react and analyse more Dimash, especially his latest three live performances from the past month (on his channel) Stranger, Fly Away and the heavenly, Ave Maria, Igor Krutoy's new composition. I just love your expressions through this video and I get it, 100%. I aways enjoy your reactions and professional analyses 🌷💟🌷Sydney 🇦🇺

    Thank you for this trip down memory lane. Please more reactions to more of these "oldies".
    I was able to hear you better. I do not know if you moved the mic closer or if I just have the volume turned up but thank you either way.

    I have to admit, most of that was over my head.
    Two things are obvious, even to me:
    1. You enjoyed the song.
    2. You had no shortage of words in explaining why.
    (Many women enjoyed the song but were at a complete loss in attempting to explain why they did).
    Tom Jones is easy on the eyes and enjoyable to listen to. (As are you). Great Job, Julia!

    Without question my favorite singer of all-time. Born in 1962, I would fight with my parents to watch his television show when I was 7 and 8 years old. He has been a permanent fixture in my musical life. Simply unequaled. No peers!! None!!

    Wow, I forgot how good this guy sang!
    One of my parents had this guy's music.
    Even though that type of music genre was on the outs in my youth, it was impossible not to be impressed ...by that old person's type music (as I thought of it back then 😄).

    Tom is such a fantastic exceptional singer I really have to put him in the top 10 vocalists of the last 50 years. Powerful with feeling with great presence phrasing and tone. That's why he's TOM JONES, Right? Great use of vibrato too. Spot on analysis Julia. *CHEERS*

    Excellent comments. You explained how dynamics works to make a great performance . Ive been playing piano for 20 years and have progressed into using dynamics without realizing exactly how to describe it . Ive been simply considering it being expressive. Now i have a different way of looking at it.

    I grew up in a hair salon and my mother took me to see Tom Jones several times as a kid. I also saw Liberace and Jim Neighbors as well.
