She and her manager were leaving a L.A restaurant when John Lennon was coming in. He stopped and said to Karen, "I just want to tell you, love, you have a fabulous voice." Karen was astounded. She couldn't believe that John Lennon complimented her! It's too bad that Karen had such a low self-esteem about herself and her vocal abilities.
I'm a 80's 90's metal singer raised by my Mom who was a professional singer who was known for sounding like Karen Carpenter so this one touched my heart. She has nice tones in her lower notes. I know EVERY Carpenters song by heart thanks to Mom. She passed 3 yrs ago April 1st and I haven't been able to listen to her recordings since cause I just BALL LIKE A BABY! My Mother was the sweetest person in the world. Never judged, had a hard life but always had a smile. I miss her dearly and thank you for this review. I love you Mom!

I thought I'd be the only "Metal Head " that loved The Carpenters , reading the comments here it seems like there's loads of us which is pretty cool. In Metal I love the power of the vocal and the music. The top metal vocalists all have a dynamic that is driven. Karen Carpenter has a purity in her voice that is unique , it has a dynamic all of it's own.
Karen Carpenter is my #1 female singer of all time. In listening to all kinds of music for over 50 years I have found none that come close to her in any way. She wasnt just the singer. She was the song. Thats what makes her voice the very best.

Some of Ms. Carpenter's best friends were Petula Clark, Olivia Newton-John, and Dionne Warwick, all of whom are or were still performing within the last few years. I can only imagine Karen Carpenter would be too if only she'd been able to get and stay healthy. Damn tragic.

Yes it was a Burt Bacharach/Hal David composition and even sounds a bit like Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head. Also, I don't think she was classically trained as a singer, because she wanted to play drums instead. All her singing talent was natural.

It took a while to get her to stop playing and singing at the same time, until Richard hired Hal Blaine. She couldn't make a case to keep drumming after that. Generally it would be one take in the studio, unless Richard wanted a different inflection somewhere. Which was rare. These accounts are from Richards own mouth.
It's so wonderful to see a young person (young expert!) admiring Karen Carpenter. I know I sound 94 but I am 36 and as a kid the Carpenters was my favourite. Her voice is amazing. So is yours, actually! Subscribed :)

When I was 4 years old in the 70's my parents had just divorced and I didn't see my mother for several years, so when Karen Carpenter's voice came on the radio I associated it with her voice. My performance was with a girl who played piano, my brother on trumpet and me on guitar. It was a High School graduate ceremony. I love this song_ and we did a good job as we were all musically trained. I thank you for the memory. am 65 now and we performed this aged 17. So sad about Karen's illness and young death. She was a great singer and drummer. Thanks for the memory.

The only issue here with this video you chose is, it's missing almost 40 seconds of amazing chorus at the end of the song. Check another video to see what I mean.

You need to "google" about Karen's background, but she actually enjoyed playing the drums more than singing. Her voice was actually discovered accidentally while she was on an audition to play drums for The Wrecking Crew. (should see those videos). Also, on most of the album versions and on some Live performances Karen does play the drums. She was known as "one take Karen" cause she recorded her songs on first take. In a computer analysis comparison of her voice pitch/tone there is no difference from her "Live" and studio recorded voice. (see Wings of Pegasus reactions) Her contralto voice range is so incredibly soft, beautiful and mesmerizing with superb control. Could listen to he for hours on end.

Karen considered herself a drummer more-so than a singer. I think it was Rolling Stone magazine that ranked her as the top drummer in the world at one point. So her rhythm was impeccable. But that voice was so angelic! There's a great video you can find on TH-cam where she performs Rainy Days and Mondays while drumming. I'd love to see you react to that. There's also a video of her playing drums on Close To You, if you'd want to cover that again. I'm in awe while watching her play while singing so beautifully. I imagine drums and vocals would be quite challenging for most people.

Karen had the most beautiful smooth voice ever. She rarely "belted" out songs but rather, sang just above a whisper. Her brother Richard, was himself, an accomplished composer and music director. I was so blessed to have grown up with their music!

Voice of an angel. Love classic Rock, Metal etc but love Karen!
From a 1974 Rolling Stone cover story that I will never forget: "When she really comes alive is when she sings; she changes completely. Joking or talking one moment, she becomes a different person the very next, as soon as she opens her mouth. Out comes that unique and wonderful voice, exactly as on record, expressing fascinating contrasts: chilling perfection with much warmth; youth with wisdom. Then she seems to be someone who knows something of life. She must be aware of the transformation she brings about, yet when asked to describe what happens at such a moment, all she will guardedly say is, “I don’t know what you mean. I’m not thinking of anything in particular. I’m just . . . trying to get it right.”
Karen had the most beautiful smooth voice ever. She rarely "belted" out songs but rather, sang just above a whisper. Her brother Richard, was himself, an accomplished composer and music director. Together, their harmonies rocked the 70's, and early 80's. Before Karen was known for her vocals, she was already considered one of America's most talented drummers! I was so blessed to have grown up with their music!
I had forgotten what an amazing singer she was. Absolutely the best! She left us too early. Watching her performing live must have been stunning.

Karen is a legend. It makes me so sad how she was pressured into singing whe she was so great at playing drums.
Drummers are a dime a dozen. She was good, but denying the world that voice would have been far sadder. Drummer Karen Carpenter is playing hotel lounges. Singer Karen Carpenter will be forever.

Karen Carpenter was an enigma in the world of music - thank you for giving her a play! She was one of my very favorites, that's for sure - time stops for me when I hear her singing.

OK this time you got me with Karen when I was a wee lad living in Canada I would do anything I could to listen to her and that horrible disease took her too early. She was my total crush.
