    One thing that separated Sinatra from many before and after was his impeccable timing. He could always change the words a little bit, but was always in beat with the tune.

    I know this is about Sinatra, but the orchestra playing is no ordinary orchestra; it is the Count Basie Orchestra. Sinatra and Basie had a very special relationship and there can be no doubt that, his best collaborations were with Basie. If you are not sure that this was with Basie then you are reminded by the final three chords on the piano, this was Basie's musical signature.

      And Quincy Jones was conducting! Such an amazing combo, plus the entire thing was filmed for a charity benefit with Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. Johnny Carson was the MC, subbing for Joey Bishop. 😊

    Maestra Setrakian,
    I am a singer and Frank Sinatra was a major influence for me. I had the great pleasure on Fathers Day 1975 of meeting Frank Sinatra. I was able to tell him how very much I enjoyed his singing and (in essence) of his influence on me as a singer and entertainer. He shook my hand and thanked me. I told him I didn't normally collect autographs but that I definitely wanted his and he signed one for me. To this day, his autograph is the only one I have. As I was walking away I turned back around and called to him. As he turned and looked at me I asked him if I could send him a recording of my singing. He replied "Send it to my office at MGM." Then he continued walking away with Mrs. Sinatra. I was 22 years of age then and although at that time I had already performed in "supper clubs", "night clubs" and other entertainment venues, I never quite worked up the nerve to send a recording to him. Just meeting him and being able to tell him of my admiration and respect for him was in itself the fulfillment of a much desired goal.

    Sinatra loved working with the Basie organization...

  • @racetrackmemorabilia
    @racetrackmemorabilia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Really interesting and well done. I do think that an absolute key to prime Sinatra brilliance is how he laid back on the beat. It’s so difficult to sing along with him on his Capitol and early Reprise recordings because your mind is telling you it’s time to sing that note, but not Sinatra. He waited. And then after he waited, he changed up the lyric to give it punch. “Stars Fell on Alabama” has in my view the greatest example when he sang later in the song “Stars Fractured ‘Bama”

    Another "tool" that Francis Albert uses is his ability to take a lung full of breath and sing a looonnng legato phrase which enhances the line of the lyric he is singing .He and Jo Stafford absorbed it when watching Tommy Dorsey on the nights on the bandstand when they were girl and boy singer. His trombone technique was flawless in that respect.Mary,did you use the Alexandsr technique. We had lectures on it when I was a peripatetic music teacher.

    I really enjoyed your reaction and analysis! So many other "voice coaches" or "voice teachers" lack the actual knowledge to examine elements of a vocal performance. I love Frank Sinatra.....My dad owned a ton of his records that we would listen to all the time. I wanted to grow up to be like him. As for a suggestion, I think So Hyang from South Korea may be one of the most remarkable female vocalists in the world today. I think you should check out Arirang Alone if you're interested in how she sings to tell a story. My other personal favorites are Hug Me and Bridge Over Troubled Water. Would love to hear what you think about this vocalist.

    Very cool analysis. I especially like how you talked about connection to inner truths and experiences to fuel the emotional narrative. It's true whether you sing, act, are a visual artist, or dancer. You have to access thoughts and emotions from your own life, or people will smell falsity like a dead fish. With Frank, he could sing five notes and it would sound great. Such personality!
    Thank you for making this reaction video! I would never have found you otherwise. Oh, also, if you haven't heard of them yet, I would suggest some interesting international younger singers that you may like. Their genres may not be something you always listen to (Popera, Symphonic Metal, etc), but I think you being an excellent vocalist and a sense of humor (I watched some of your videos just a bit ago ; ) . You seem like a person that might embrace interesting genres. Your insights would be valued as viewers love to hear what people like you think.

    This was later Sinatra. He was having fun with the original version he sang. He'd done the song a million times and tried to keep it fresh for the audience (and himself). Notice, he fluffed the words singing "you are all I worship, all I long for and adore" instead of "long for" and then "all I worship." It's been written that he had trouble with lyrics later on in his career. But he could sell a song and make you fall in love all over again with whoever you were in love with, including Frank.

      Ummm…no. This was 1965. Literally less than 2 years after he recorded this with the Basie band. He didn’t flubb lyrics…he changed them when he WANTED to change them. OLDER Sinatra may have had trouble with lyrics…not 1965 Sinatra. He was literally at the top of his game here. The greatest that there ever was.

    Could you do an analysis on an old soul young singer Angelina Jordan. She overs songs by Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday, Etta James and many more. She has a beautiful tone quality and uses ma y jazz techniques. Would love your opinion on the quality of her voice including clarity and diction. Thank you.

    I never think frank Sinatra ever thinks about the mechanics of his body or his voice.. He is just signing the words that he happened to experience himself. End of the day. Have fun singing the song. He was not thinking about technique

    • @filmmekker
      @filmmekker 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      He was very knowledgeable about technique. He’s spoken of breath control and the Bel Canto school of singing. He was a big opera fan.

      No, YOU are not thinking about the technique, that's part of the magic.

      HMHK please keep watching... I will continue to give tips about singing along the way. I do hope to do a whole series on my voice method when my book comes out. I hope you got a few singing tips watching my Frank Sinatra episode. Take a look at Tea & Sprnklers on my channel with Sierra Boggess and we talk about breath, support and resonators in episodes 1, 2 & 3.

    But dont all singers draw on their own romantic experiences.

    • @MarySetrakian
      @MarySetrakian  ปีที่แล้ว

      Some singers just pretend to be romantic, rather than using their own lives. Frank was such a great example of using all of himself in every way! Otherwise it would be general, and not as interesting. And as we know, Frank was one of a kind!🎉❤🎶
