  • I've been wanting to share this video for some time. It's amazing how the same stomp pedals you've used for years sound completely different going through the FX loop. Hopefully I've given some ideas to you to get some great tones you didn't think possible with your current setup.
Take care and I'll see you next week!
Thanks for tuning in again, feel free to email me with any questions at Lambchopper678@me.com Subscribe to the channel and follow on me Facebook lambchopper6...

The biggest difference to my ears was that EQ through FX-loop. That on sounded really aggressive and tight compared to straight in. That was some good sound.

Great tips. I put my delay in the loop years ago because of Steve Vai. He pointed out that a natural delay is an echo of the sound coming from the speaker. So the closer to the end of your signal the delay is the more natural sounding it should be. Delay the amplifier, instead of amplifying the delay.

I think it depends if the amp you are using. My 10 band eq was plugged into the fox loop at first. Not a big difference. Once I plugged it between my pedals and the front of the amp, now I have a variety of sounds. BTW, I have a peavey classic 20 head

I agree that the EQ sounds really good in the loop! Some of that might be due to the fact that the original EQ shape through the front was a subtle mid-boost while the EQ shape in the loop was a prominent mid scoop. Anyway, the EQ in the loop seems to sort of mimic what the Mesa Mark V does: a real tone sculpting tool! Thanks for the insight!

I have a similar setup (I use a 2x12 rectifier cab and a MXR M108 10 band EQ) . The use of an EQ on the FX loop was a game changer and with the 10 band EQ I can put the volume slider at minimum and with that I can also increase the volume of the amp, giving more saturation on the tubes of the preamp. The sound is amazing with reasonable (room) levels even with the amp with volume at 9 o`clock.

I think chours is alot more natural in front of the amp. But in the fx loop i think it sounds more clean. Now with the eq i think if you use it for a boost Clean boost, mid boost, high boost ect, its best in front or to help feed back it will distort those levels you boost. But if you want your tone of your amp or to change, it works best and its alot more powerful in the ex loop imp

    08:28 to clarify :
    - EQ in front of the amp will shape the distortion character : tighter, flubbier, beefier, fizzier...
    - EQ after the amp (FX loop included) will shape the overall EQ curve of the amp : boomy, scooped, mid heavy, etc

I just bought an EVH iconic and the EQ on the amp wasn’t that effective so I ran my EQ200 through the FX loop, it’s the first tube amp I’ve ever owned and I just assumed that’s were the EQ pedal went. It made sense to me because my last set up was just a Powerstage200 with a Preamp pedal, I always put the EQ, delay and reverb pedals after the preamp. I was kind of worried I was doing it wrong on my tube amp but I’m glad I seen someone doing it that way on TH-cam.

I own a 2018 Marshall MG50G combo amp. I just cannot get a good metal sound out of it. One problem (besides the amp) is that I cannot raise the volume much, as I live in an apartment complex in Japan, where noise is easily heard from other apartments (and sounds horrible through headphones). Anyway, I tried using my MXR 10 band EQ in the effects loop with the scooped settings, and it made a SIGNIFICANT improvement. Not perfect, but much better. I have also been using another 10 band EQ (scooped settings) in the front of the amp paired with an MXR distortion pedal (prior to watching this video), which has also significantly enhanced the sound. Again, not perfect, but a decent metal sound. So, I just wanted to thank you for the suggestion. It made a positive difference. If you ever get your hands on any Marshall MG Gold combos, I would be curious if you can achieve similar great metal tones you’ve demonstrated. Thanks, again!

@@LambChopper678 no worries. Haven't tried it myself apart from digital world of emulation with 2 noise gates. That noise suppressor with an onboard loop afaik is 2 in one solution basically. The in-out jacks are best to deal with clean signal from your guitar, while, when used at the same time, send-return are best with high gain. The pedal does some magic trickery differentiating noise levels of your clean guitar and amp's (preamp, pedal, whatever placed there) gain stages, thus allows to almost eliminate unwanted sound cutt-offs

Is the only way to get big sound at bedroom volumes to buy a bigger amp like the 40 watt and then either use the master volume to bring it down ( channel volume turned up) ? Or just use a power attenuator like the Bugera power soak? Since you have these loud amps at home and mic them up for such great tone, how do you do it? My question is assuming I don't want to go into a computer using two notes or something. I just want to jam with the music without disturbing others but not sacrifice tone.

@@LambChopper678 I’m very confused, somehow I play entirely through the back of my amp. I plug straight into (guitar > pedal) my pedal board which is then stuck into the send on back. I guess it means my knobs are useless on the amp but for whatever reason it’s never sounded wrong to me? I run a compressor > distortion > chorus and it just works, am I missing out on sweet tones?

I've got a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe that has a pre-amp out/power-amp in. Am I right in assuming this can be used in the same way as an effects loop?

I’m having a problem with my Marshall dsl 20 I have a boss ge-7 eq through the fx loop and I’m using the foot switch and when I turn on the fx loop on the foot switch there is no sound I was wondering if you new what was going on

    • @LambChopper678
      @LambChopper678  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Sounds like one of your guitar cables is no good. To check each cable one at a time just plug the cable into both ends of the loop to complete the circuit and see if there’s a sound loss or no signal at all.
That’s always a good way to troubleshoot what’s going on. Test both leads and then check the eq making sure you go from send to input and output to return on the eq. Let me know what you find 👊🏻

An eq with sliders is a graphic, an eq with rotary dials is parametric. They do function and sound different from each other.

Bro, the MXR chorus is unfortunately catastrophic in the loop because it eats up all the sound. The buffer is crap. Test the pedal in the loop then remove it, you'll see :(

You might've already got this comment, but those solid pedal couplers you have are apparently not great for pedals. Since they're rigid, when you push down a pedal, they can put stress on the jacks, and will eventually break.

For example, Jerry’s tone on Facelift & Dirt is way more aggressive than any Metallica tone ever! (RTL an exception perhaps)
