It's always amazed me how little many guitar players use EQ pedals. Distortion and boost are all great and dandy. But almost any electric guitar I've ever heard, puts out at least some unwanted frequencies. When the Boss Metal Zone pedal came out, all my buddies were struggling to get any usable tones from it. I suggested they get an eq pedal and try using it before or after the MZ to smooth out some of the rough edges. Next thing you know, the MZ's had fresh batteries in them all the time, and were seeing frequent use again! Once I'd get them dialed in and chugging heavily, they were happy again! Long live the Metal Zone.
Metal zone as a clean boost with a 6 band in front and 10 band in the loop is the heaviest tone you can get out of any amp. I’ve used this exact setup for years. It’s literally my main Rythym tone and for leads I just cut the metal zone and have a nice sounding lead with Delay and Chorus
"When the Boss Metal Zone II pedal came out, all my buddies were struggling to get any good tones from it." Just like me and all my buddies. We kept using it anyway 😂
THIS is so very helpful!!! Great instructional 101-type video for those of us still toying with amp setting and pedals only, looking to take the next step in controlling our tone.
Speaking for many, including myself. I don’t even own any gear yet, so I’m still learning about pedals, EQ’s, and overall settings for each of those. Love these type of videos! Thanks as always and cheers, LambChopper!
I've been using a few 6, 7 and 10 band graphic EQs, both in the front of the amp (after boosts/OD) and in the FX loop, they do shape the tone nicely, however the HUGE control over my tone came from a ratty cheap Artec parametric EQ pedal in the loop, holy shit the difference it makes!! I'm about to pull the trigger on the new 5 band parametric EQ from Ibanez, the pentatone equalizer PTEQ, looks to be everything you'd never need to hone your tone in every scenario, and the best of all, it will come at a really great price point!!
Hey Lamb I love the content you've been putting out. Since watching your channel I've gained so much knowledge on really dialling in my own tone and sticking out in the mix, and generally so much about how to be heard and sound good. Thanks for all the awesome work you're doing man, keep it up!
I too am a huge fan of the EQ pedal. It does so much and it's one of those pieces of gear that is always on my board. Right now I have the MXR KfK 10 band. It takes 18v to run it, but with the volume and gain being independent you can really slam the front of the amp hard. Or the opposite, cut that gain and volume to get those sparkling cleans. And every tone in between.
This is so informative and probably the most important video for guitar players. Not many would pay attention to EQ pedals. Thank you for putting this video up!
Thank you for this video. I just purchased my first tube amp setup. Prs mt15 head with a evh 5150 2x12 cab. Excited to play and buy a few pedals one being a noisegate and also an eq pedal
@jimdunlopusa hook this man up,I'm about to buy an MXR eq because of this video. Eq in the effects loop of my Peavey Triumph is just what it needs by the sound of it! Cheers!
been following for a while now, and your just an absolute madman of a player, love all of your jam room and guitars, the tones you achieve are always so raw and its cool to see what kind of things you can get away with, but doing such minor things.
EQ'ing before any kind of overdrive, saturation, distortion will definitely influence the way your signal breaks up and will be a different tone than post overdrive etc. Experiment with some pre-recorded direct sounds into amp and pedal sims to get a feel with how the tones change. It's easier to critically listen when you're not playing at the same time.
Yeah, this video really help me. I got a cheap Cube Baby fx wich is doesn't have an fx loop. So, i don't have to worry about to put an eq in front of preamp section.
I've using a DOD FX40B EQ since 1994, originally to tame my FX-69 Grunge, but once I got into a band, it was to actually shape my tone to fit into the live mix.
I originally tried my EQ in the front of my DSL with a Metal Zone as a clean boost and it was just way too much. After a lot of experimenting with different gain pedals both in the front and back, I put an SD-1 in the front and the EQ in the loop and I have a very similar sound to my old solid state setup with the MZ and EQ, but with some attitude and sound that doesn't break up at higher volumes, but just gets nasty (in a good way). I don't play in a mix so I have more of the slight smile EQ pattern similar to the 10:20 mark. My base tone is the "No More Tears" album. Just scoop the mids a little bit to get "And Justice For All" or down tune a little bit to get the more Nu Metal Tones and roll off the low end a little bit. I tried the MZ in the loop as well and it sounded pretty decent in the clean channel, but was not really needed as the OD channels took care of that type of sound.
Aww the little conure. Miss my little bird, hated when I played electric, but would fly over and perch on my guitars when they were on the stands and just hang out
the way I understand is pre EQ is like a problem solving tool(for your instrument with factors like type/number of strings and pickups), post EQ is like an actual tone shaping tool for the amp
If there's anyone on the fence about getting an eq pedal....get off. I've bought so many distortion, overdrive, amps speakers.....nothing got me that tone I heard in my inner ear...till I bought my 10 band mxr.
Funny, I just grabbed an MXR 6 band the other day, can't believe the difference it makes. Running in front of the amp, I can make my cheap guitars sound like they have much better pickups. In the FX loop, I can make my amp sound like a completely different amp. Suddenly my ENGL doesn't just sound like an ENGL. Having a blast.
This video was super helpful man thank you, and as a bonus I use the same amp as the one you’re using in the video and I’ve got an mxr ten band EQ so this is perfect
Your channel is such a gem. Thank you for the knowledge. Think I'm gonna pick up that EQ, is it good for cleans as well? I play death metal, 80s metal, modern metal pretty much the same stuff as Lamb in my free time, but I also play worship guitar at my church as well. Would it be versatile enough for both? I'm new to EQs and how they work, only know the absolute basics. Thanks again!
It’s like audio alchemy, depending on what frequency you manipulate, where and when you do it, all just produces different metal! I always learn something from these videos, but admittedly, it’s still a bit beyond me. I can’t afford the amps and physical gear at the moment. Having to rely on digital simulations, like Amplitube.
Man, I just love playing guitar. When I started out, I had a guitar and an amp. Then I bought different guitars to achieve different sounds. As I got older, I could afford to buy different amps… so now i’m in the market for different eq pedals to put them in different places of the fx chain… it just never gets boring 😂.
honestly, this video really made me want to pick up the guitar and play for the first time in a while. it was really cool hearing about some of these tips, like the dimebag "pushing in front and scooping in the back" setup, and you really nailed that metallica crunch, but my rusty ears would have liked for some of these riffs/eq settings to have a comparison with the flat eq to better pickup the nuances.
I've always used EQ's - probably for 40 years now. A Boss back in the day, and a Berringer 31 band stereo rack unit at one point. These days I'm pleasantly surprised by the Amoon EQ-7. I mount them on-board some of my guitar builds in lieu of tone controls. I usually put it at the front of the pedal chain, right after the tuner. On a 7 band, I typically max the top and bottom bands, and cut the middle three all the way - IE super scooped. I also don't do noise gates, cause feedback is part of my tone.
good video i have 2 10 band eqs in the effects loop for lead and rhythm in this thrash band ive started. this one makes me want a 6 band in front of my jcm800 or dsl 20 as an option for some different tones. I'm trying to blend a v30 cab with a greenback cab until i can get another v30 marshall cabinet. These videos really make me want a torpedo as well to experiment with more with di instead of micing

Nice! I have the mxr 10 band. I use it to tame the very top end of sound as I have the Marshall V30’s so it gets kinda harsh on top end. Wish it had an LED to show if it’s on or not. Not sure why they don’t put that in their EQ’s.
Hey buddy, no its a newer one but I just found out someone modded it where all the middle controls do not light up only level and gain. Im assuming the mod was to tame to ridiculous bright LED's. @@LambChopper678
I picked up my first mxr 10 band EQ because of your channel and I love it. Unrelated question. Do you think the Kraken could produce some Lamb of God tones reasonably well? If its paired with EQ or compresion pedals
Hey lambchopper. Just wandering what headphones you find best to use for guitar amps? I know it won't be the same as a speaker cab but I live in an apartment building and don't want to bother the neighbour's. I have sennheiser hd280 currently and get decent quality sound but would be nice if sound had a bit more presence and a bit more open. Any suggestions that have worked well for you?
