    used to run the 10 band eq in front my my el34 5150 with a pro co rat set to a "clean-ish" boost and crank the resonance with a full blown scoop on the EQ of the amp. Impossible Death Metal tones. Great video!

      I know this is an old comment, but I'm just curious. Couldn't you just boost the volume of your 10 band instead of using the rat as a clean boost?

  • @ErikEarlJohnson
    @ErikEarlJohnson ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent demonstration! I totally agree tailoring the frequency spectrum and level that hits the front end of the amp is a fantastic tool to get the tone you want, especially more unique tones you can't get any other way. I find it especially useful when I want one guitar/pickup combo to sound closer to another I use through the same rig (i.e. make my SG sound a lot closer to my Les Paul by boosting lows and low mids with an eq before the distortion stages of the rig). Slash, Dave Murray and of course Slayer all did the eq in front thing at some point.

    • @ErikEarlJohnson
      @ErikEarlJohnson ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, different EQ's will get different character and results, I've used the Boss GE-7, an old MXR 10-band with the plug, and a Mesa Five-band pedal. They all sound different even if you're trying to use the same frequencies, so it's valuable to get a collection of EQ pedals just as you would overdrives, because in front of the amp especially they can sound WAY different.

  • @MangaJosh
    @MangaJosh ปีที่แล้ว

    When you were a/b-ing the grind and the 10 band the latter sounded tighter and with less shrill top end. I have the eq from hell and used to use a 10 band in the loop like 15 years ago. But now I’m sure I need to get a 6 and a 10 band mxr to run with the eqfh. Thanks man.

  • @RX120D
    @RX120D ปีที่แล้ว

    EQ in front is affecting your guitar's tone on the way in. What this means is that it allows you to specify exactly what frequency ranges you want to be distorted more or less than others. This is how you get a tight tone. Cutting lows reduces distortion on the low frequencies, giving you a punchy attack. Djent boys like to boost 1-1.5k aggressively to get saturation focused in the mids and cut lows to get that stringy, metallic sound.
    An EQ out front is exactly what the BMT knobs are on a Mesa Mark series amp. Shape the tonal character with the pre-EQ, shape the tonal balance with post-EQ (in the loop or DAW)

    Welcome back Anthony! Glad to see you well. I would love your take on a really solid general metal tone for down-tuning. I'm a huge black dahlia murder fan and they play in Drop C and C standard. I'm running roughly the set up you did in your master of puppets DSL video, and I find it sounds fairly flabby in the low end for me. I try to dial back the lower frequencies on the six band in the front but then it sounds hollow. Thanks mate!

    I'm just starting to really play with the fx loop. I used to play stereo amps and didn't really have the option even.. plus I was a kid with not a bunch of money for cables anyway. The eq is a delicate, misunderstood, almost limitless pedal. Through the loop it seems like the effect is more dramatic whether or not that suits you ..
    I prefer (if I have to choose one, instead of doing both) vol -eq-pitch and I love pre and post wah distortion and there's distortion in the loop too .. I keep a delay before and in the fx loop too. They have medication for this I think ..

      When I bought my NS2 it was really popular to shit on it, every keyboard virtuoso was busy telling me the only pedal to get was the ISP Decimator. I found mine to be very versatile, subtle and transparent. It works for any kind of noise gate use case you need, from really choppy high gain stuff, to ultra clean playing where you would never know it was on until you turned it off.
      People got all snobby about Boss, but they don't make bad pedals. I'll never sell my NS2 that I picked up cheap because everyone thought it was no good at the time.
