Wouldn't the play off-center be reduced by putting it at the drag at ~20"#? And wouldn't the self centering effect of caster overcome the drag approaching center when it is assembled and on the road? -- Asking for a friend.

Your way is how my Landrover Disco 1998 genuine manual says to adjust the steering box at 90, km intervals.
I thought there was a mark showing the center of the worm gear.
So doing this will make it to where I don't have to turn the steering wheel half way around before the tires turn?

is it possible to adjust the steering box without removing it?
Yes, just disconnect the drag link so you can feel the play in the steering box
