I have used all three. My favorite is the Vanguard. Haven’t really had any problems with the Vanguard engines. They’ve made them for a long time but some of the engines are harder to get parts for particularly the older engines where they changed to a newer style piston and flywheel assembly that requires buying expensive conversion kits. I’ve had Kohler engines that have ran good and other that are always having problems. I used them as mowers, mini bush hogs and scraping the driveway. They both held up beautifully and still run fine. But, they were built years ago.

I have been shopping for a zero turn mower and I have heard the Kohler's have an overheating problem and I have heard good things about the B&S Vanguard motor.
Yes the Kohler engines have been developing overheating issues due to poor carburetor designs making them run too lean and the plastic intake manifolds with the dinky o-ring gaskets tend to cause a bad vacuum leak and make it run lean or surge. The Vanguards don’t seem to have as bad of an issue. They haven’t changed the base engine design all that much since they were made over 30 years ago. However the newest vanguards also have some carburetor problems but that’s usually due to letting them sit with bad gas in them. The Nikki carburetors that both Briggs and Kohler put on their engines are kinda terrible but less so on the Briggs vanguards.
You said that the Harbor freight engine has a small output shaft @ 1" but the Briggs and the Kohler looked by my eye to be about the same size. What are the sizes of the Briggs and Kohler?

A lot of engine conversion kits for John Deere’s are for Vanguard engines. I’ve done countless conversions for 316 and 318 tractors for customers where the Onan engines were either worn out or blown up but the tractor was still in good shape. Everyone who I did the Vanguard conversion has been very pleased. I have swapped on a Kohler engine once and they are noticeably bulkier than the Briggs. They are both good engines but depending on the tractor, the vanguard is easier as a universal engine swap option because it is so compact.
I have both the predator and vanguard engines that you shown here on my jon boats. I struggle to start the predator engine every time. I believe you mentioned changing the fuel pump. Will that improve startup?
It can, although it sounds like you might have a different problem like something with the carb tuning. The exception is if your engine is more than a foot or so above the gas tank, then the stock fuel pump is too weak to pump the gas up to the engine
You can use an electric fuel pump but keep in mind you will need to run a return line to the tank. These carburetors are can’t handle a lot of fuel pressure so a return line is required.
Make your own dyno by making a run stand that can rotate on the center of the crank then use an arm and scale to measure torque. See flycorvair for a great example.

Just an FYI, the 725cc Kohler engines can actually make at least 25 HP if you swap out the carburetor for a carburetor from a 25 HP engine. The difference in the carburetors is either the size of the intake orifice, the throttle butterfly valve has a limited range like what Kawasaki does with their engines, or the jet sizes are different. It could also be a combination of things.

Bath tub design is cool as long as the case bolts dont back out and mesh with the flywheel cracking the block. Also the plastic cam gears.
briggs has never used plastic flywheels, they use plastic flywheel fans which is fine but never plastic flywheels, the flywheel has to be metal for the engine to spark
@@ayp1938 Well the the black metal on the 22hp. Poulan Pro I replaced must of been really soft metal. It melted the teeth the where the starter turned the ALL BLACK fiberboard looking flywheel with a very thin metal disk attached to the underside of it. I have yet to get more than 500hrs, out of the newer Briggs engines without major damage/ issues of some sort , I have numerous kohlers with 750+ hrs to over 1000 hours with no issues . I have not used any of the predator engines .
I was just wondering if you have to disassemble, clean, and adjust/fix the Chinese made engine before use? I made the mistake of buying a Chinese milling machine some years ago and it was a hot mess as it came in the door.
I’d go with the Kohler. The predators are good but but like he said, the fuel pumps are trash and I’ve also found that the predator stock carb does not hold a tune very well. I don’t have experience with the larger Briggs and Stratton engine but all the small ones used on the generators that I have seen use a little oil and if you don’t watch it will throw a rod.
The smaller vanguard engines should use much oil at all. The larger vanguard do use a little more oil but not enough where you have to top it off every time you use it. As long as you stay on top of it, it’s fine. It’s normal air cooled engines consume a tiny bit of oil especially as they age but some do consume more than others. The big block Kawasaki engines are notorious for high oil consumption. Haven’t seen too much oil consumption from the vanguards unless they were not very well maintained or have high hours. Kohler is a mixed bag with oil consumption. It usually has to do with blown or leaky head gaskets. Newer engines that run lean from the factor to combat emissions eventually have high oil consumption as a result.
The stock predator carburetors are ok but are really only meant for wide open throttle and that’s it. They have flat spots in the part throttle range where it falls on its face. The fuel pumps that come with them are weak and trashy. You can get replacements online for cheap and they usually last longer too. Remember that quality control with predator engines is a hit or miss. You could get a good running engine or get one that lasts a few months before it conks out. I speak from experience as a small engine mechanic.

If you look on landscaping forums, you'll find most are impressed with the Vanguards. They were made in partnership with a Japanese company but now manufacturing has been brought back to the U.S. Hopefully, the quality of the engine will be maintained.
We used to make these for the Predator. Yes, they’re just the old pancake style screw on mufflers you can get for lawnmower engines. We drilled out the threads and welded exhaust tubing to them.
How is ur experience with the Vanguard EFI Engines? I Work at an Company that uses the Briggs 22hp EFI Version in 14kva Generators and as far as i know they are Pretty Reliable. At the Carb Version i had an Broken Fuel Pump a few Times^^

I honestly can say its a good motor for a budget swap...only thing i did different was switch over to an electrical fuel pump due to that motor loves gas and the mechanical pump that was on the motor wasnt pumping enough fuel....other than that its really stout
About a dozen years ago I built equipment around vanguard and Honda engines. I used different engines because they were for different companies. I didn't want either to say I stole the design for their equipment so all the parts I didn't make were from different manufacturers. I really couldn't see any important differences and all the equipment lasted for years of hard use. I really thought that the vanguard was a slightly better value. The people using the Honda thought it was a better brand. I thought both were great and would use either if I was making something for myself. I think if I was building something for myself I would look for something with a carburetor. Fuel injection seems unnecessary. A carburetor is simpler and on such a small engine more logical regarding repair.
Just wondering if their is a place that carries manifold pipes and flanges so you can adapt it the exhaust layout for your replacement? Also are those vertical or horizontal mount or both?
I can say from experience that the predator engines are the cheapest for sure. The Briggs are the middle engine and the top dog is the Kohler. Will pay more for a Kohler as that is the most reliable engine I have used and love. V

@LaserFalcon I hope the Kohler 7000 series are reliable. I just bought a cub cadet zero turn with the 22 HP Kohler. I had a Kohler Courage that didnt give me any troubles for 14 years even though it is considered the worst Kohler ever. Bath tub design is cool as long as the case bolts dont back out and mesh with the flywheel cracking the block. Also the plastic cam gears.
@@marcmo7138 I hope so as well. I remember a time when most things you bought held up for yrs, any more im not so sure
How hard would it be to do a mini-air boat using a Yamaha V-Star 650cc engine or even a Yamaha Roadstar 16/1700cc engine?
you have all the additional mass for the gearcase and gears
can the kohler EFI be coverted to LG for a generator?..
excellent share!!
larry
Does briggs have real metal parts or are they still using the plastic flywheels and cams without air pockets in them like their earlier models?
briggs has never used plastic flywheels, they use plastic flywheel fans which is fine but never plastic flywheels, the flywheel has to be metal for the engine to spark
@@ayp1938 Well the the black metal on the 22hp. Poulan Pro I replaced must of been really soft metal. It melted the teeth the where the starter turned the ALL BLACK fiberboard looking flywheel with a very thin metal disk attached to the underside of it. The replacement was all metal and heavy compared to very light one I took off.
@@countryside8122 oh your talking about the ring gear on the flywheel, yeah those are plastic but the flywheel itself isnt
It must not be a vanguard, they're 23hp
I have yet to get more than 500hrs, out of the newer Briggs engines without major damage/ issues of some sort , I have numerous kohlers with 750+ hrs to over 1000 hours with no issues . I have not used any of the predator engines .
I wouldn't get a Briggs unless it was the Vanguard made in partnership with Daihatsu, a Japanese company.
I've put thousands of hours on my vanguard with no issues
I was just wondering if you have to disassemble, clean, and adjust/fix the Chinese made engine before use? I made the mistake of buying a Chinese milling machine some years ago and it was a hot mess as it came in the door.
I’d go with the Kohler. The predators are good but but like he said, the fuel pumps are trash and I’ve also found that the predator stock carb does not hold a tune very well. I don’t have experience with the larger Briggs and Stratton engine but all the small ones used on the generators that I have seen use a little oil and if you don’t watch it will throw a rod.
What do you mean by hold a tune?
Great compare! Thanks for sharing. I'm in the market for one of those for an air trike, this video is very useful.
There are people making entire engine kits with PSRU and upgrade parts. That's the way I would go to save myself some headache.
I have the kohler .its 4 years old with 175 hours .. right now as soon as i put it under load it chokes out and black smoke... having hell a time trying to figure out whTs wrong
what do think about the kohler powering the challenger ll
Vanguard will always best
Hi I was wondering where I could get the same Exaust as you have on the predator
Kohler and Honda are the best .
WHEN will Harbor Freight Predator bring back their VERTICAL shaft engines???????? I have 7 of the little ones that are WONDERFUL, starts at first pull & have had NO issues for 3 years
🔮
I like the Briggs that you have pull and electric start
So do we, it's the only engine this size we've seen that has the pull start backup
@@LoneStarHovercraft it must be retardedly hard to start in the freezing cold
Hi sir i would like to know if this type of engine are good or even fo small mini bike?
Where can I get a Kohler or Vanguard engine from

Kohler Engine hands down over the other two
If you look on landscaping forums, you'll find most are impressed with the Vanguards. They were made in partnership with a Japanese company but now manufacturing has been brought back to the U.S. Hopefully, the quality of the engine will be maintained.
The 23 Vanguard is hard to beat
Any idea where you can get those mufflers that you have on the Predator 670cc motor?
Looks like a custom made header with a old style Briggs screw on muffler I could be wrong
We used to make these for the Predator. Yes, they’re just the old pancake style screw on mufflers you can get for lawnmower engines. We drilled out the threads and welded exhaust tubing to them.
On direct drive prop how many pounds of thrust can the Predator makes and what size prop do you need
How is ur experience with the Vanguard EFI Engines?
I Work at an Company that uses the Briggs 22hp EFI Version in 14kva Generators and as far as i know they are Pretty Reliable.
At the Carb Version i had an Broken Fuel Pump a few Times^^
I have a vanguard 23 i installed on my john deere 757 that had the Kawasaki 25 i swapped out due to the previous owner blowing a hole through the block.
Where did you get the exhaust on the predator
I've got a 24 horse Honda engine inch and an eighth shaft Dylan on how good them are
Just wondering if their is a place that carries manifold pipes and flanges so you can adapt it the exhaust layout for your replacement? Also are those vertical or horizontal mount or both?
my predator 670 boggs down after a few hours of running any idea what causes that
If its on a riding mower ive heard the charging system is not the greatest on those predators.
I can say from experience that the predator engines are the cheapest for sure. The Briggs are the middle engine and the top dog is the Kohler. Will pay more for a Kohler as that is the most reliable engine I have used and love. V
Don't discount Briggs Vanguard lineup. Forged internals. Ain't as cheap, either.
Vanguard has been super reliable for me, I push my engines hard and it seems to take it in stride
Hallow bro.give me your price for 18hp v twin vanguard Id like to order one. Thanks
Sir,, we're can we get this engine with trusler seller
Im going to repower with the $1800 Kohler !!...that way my 200$ garden tractor will be worth 800$ when I'm done!!!
🤣so true👍
What engine will you recommend if you had too do a engine swap if you had to change out.
Out of these three we like the Kohler best. Predator 22 can do okay too but to get any real power out of it you need to replace the carb.
depends on application,imo,not that I was asked,lol
Can i install a pair of fcr 39 carbs
Hello
I just need to know where shall i buy like those shipped to my country ? Can you send me a website to email the factory?
Small airboats use these??Never heard of such, I may want to get one of those
Sure do, mostly on small one person airboats. Gotta be a light boat to work well.
Bom dia!quanto custa o motor Vanguard? brigaduuu!
Sir can you give me like that engine,,because there is no available here in the philippines
What size shaft does the Vanguard 23 have?
It usually either has a 1” or 1-1/8” diameter shaft.
This one is a 1-1/8” shaft
@@LoneStarHovercraft mine is 1-1/8" along with a 1-1/8" driveshaft with a double u-joint on my go-devil, it's a little beast
Sir how much 40hp vanguard Briggs & stratton we need here in the Philippines! I hope available coz of a lot of people fishermen we need there in the Philippines.
Good info but I was wondering more about the longevity of the predator engine.
Hi sir.I'm Bangladeshi. How can i buy this engine
Why no Kawasaki.
Nothing against them, we just haven’t used one on an airdrive yet
I’d avoid the Chinese engine based upon principle alone
Principal now? Or always? Just saying...
Sure, save now and pay later. What about cost of ownership?

That reminded me when a friend and I modified an old venturi shrouded fan to use with a horizontal shaft mower engine. It worked, but not impressive. It served best as a weekend project to get out on the water. Inches of water though. Might have been faster if I put a skirt and a diverter on the fan... :-)
Honda gx690?
