- This is one of the hardest challenges we have ever had to face - Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales and one of the UK’s most famous mountains.
In this video, we attempt to climb the HARDEST route to the summit, Crib Goch. As a grade 1 scramble, this is only for the most experienced mountaineers, and let's just say things got very rocky. Due to our failure, we actually manage to show you all three routes up Snowdon, in one EPIC day of adventure. Keep watching to see if we cross the finish line in victory.

When researching Crib Goch most videos were from confident outdoors men so it was hard to match yourself against them. Hopefully this is relatable to the more average fit person who have no idea what level their fear of heights is 😂. If we had seen a video like this before we went then maybe we wouldn’t have tried it 🤔. But you never know unless you try aye!
100% would go back and summit Snowdon again. 10/10 day out!

Hi Abby & Graz, you were brave to attempt Crib Goch and absolutely made the decision to turn back! I have just started hiking in the lake District with a friend this summer...it wad glorious! i intend to hike striding edge next summer and i respectfully suggest that the both of you start there!
Striding Edge is not as intense as Crib Goch! Love & respect guys.

To be fair as a local fell runner who goes over Crib Goch half a dozen times a year, I'd take one look at you both and say you're don't have the necessary experience to attempt a route like Crib Goch, you have to build up your experience level guys, and if necessary even hire a guide to help you get into scrambling, the guy did the right thing, the second you feel fear you have to turn around instantly if it's still safe to do so, turning around is a huge win in that situation, I must have been over Crib Goch 50 times and I've witnessed 4 rescues. I'd say before anyone even attempts the easiest of scrambles make sure you've done plenty of hill walking on just normal well marked mountain paths, being in the mountains as much as possible builds confidence and experience levels, then you take the next steps as you feel confident to do so, your clothing gives away your inexperience, ditch all cotton layers including socks and replace with wool and fast wicking fabrics, fleece and down.
You really don’t have to build up to it like that, it all depends on general outdoors experience and comfort. Crib was the first hike / scramble I ever did and have done it several times since. But, I do have 10 years of white water kayaking experience. I understand risk, decision making and generally how to handle any exposed outdoor situation. I don’t really agree with trying to scare people off, it’s better to paint a clear picture of what the route entails and let someone decide if they have it in them or need more experience to build up. Nothing wrong with jumping in the deep end if you’ve got the mindset
@@B2GXX You were obviously outdoorsy which makes a massive difference, you have to admit the guy in the video just looked out of his depth, I first went over Crib Goch when I was 6 and thought nothing of it, it's an easy grade 1 route if you're born with the confidence to do it, but I just got the feeling the guy especially would find it all a lot easier taking the slow and steady route to gaining experience, which there's nothing wrong with, we're not all born mountain goats.
We aren't all the same. Some people like wing flying, others fishing. If a person is afraid of heights, thats it game over. Me i'm afraid of heights. Its in me , nothing i can do. Same for other people. Their talents may lie in something the NOT AFRAID OF HEIGHTS types are afraid of.
@markjones127 Your advice sounds spot on to me & i think you're a fool if you want to argue with locals you have crossed it many times. Watching on youtube will do for me personally though, ha haa.

Fair play, because you still had a very long way to go and crib goch is an intensely exposed ridge that goes on for about a mile. If that first bit was too much for you then you made the right call.

You did the right thing, Gaz. I'm with you guys on this. I do a lot of hiking, but there is no way I'd go up that way. It is better to air on the side of caution. I'd hate to think of you as a casualty. There would be not much left of you if you went over that edge. Kudos for giving it a go, but props for going back. You definitely don't want to be cragfast. Thank you for showing us the hike, warts, and all. I'm with you, Gaz. I'd have been stuck there, too. It is certainly better to be safe than sorry. I'm glad you turned around. Looking back now it 100% was the right decision. We had no idea of how many casualties there are up there a tear ether otherwise we wouldn’t have even tried! Glad you enjoyed the video Chris ☺️
@AbbyandGaz I worked at RCC Edinburgh at Pitreavie Castle (Rescue Coordination Centre) for 4 years. We coordinated all rescues 5230N and above on land and sea controlling Nimrods, Helecopters, and MRTs (Mountain Rescue Teams). It was very busy in my day (you are going back a bit too) and as more people take to the outdoors it has become busier. Weekends we could have 2 or 3 rescues going on across the country or at sea at any one time. Sadly, the place is closed and passed from Royal Air Force control to civilian. I've been out on a couple of rescue missions on a visit to the Helecopter Teams at RAF Leuchars and RNAS Prestwich. It was fun being up there and seeing the views, but I'm glad I was never on the end that needed it. I'm glad they have our backs, and you don't have to pay to be rescued, unlike the States. Looking forward to your next adventure.
I've done Crib Goch several times, it is not somewhere for anybody who is unsure of heights. Once you are on the ridge, its difficult to get of. If you want to try something scrambley but feels safer, why not try Moel Siabod. The last time I stayed at Pen Y Pass youth hostel, parking was free! It was first come first parked back in them days

Remember going camping with school and we walked up Snowdon one day.
After we got to the top, our teachers wanted to get to a pub at the bottom before it closed. So we were told to make our own way back down and meet them there.
I think it was called 'character building'.

Loved your 'Crib Goch' moment you two- Many years ago i had one also, along with my sister and brother-in-law - we had done a lot of walking in Derbyshire Wales and the Peak District but one look along the Crib Goch ridge and we thought 'nah'... you did the right thing you two and far from failing you were brilliant, and well humoured about it too = good on yah!

A great decision with turning back on Crib Goch. If you're ever back that way I'd recommend climbing up via Watkins Path as the start has waterfalls and pools

I did crib three years ago, i got to a similar place you did and i froze up! Unfortunately for me my cousin wasn't as supportive 😂 he pushed me on but to be honest was the best thing ever, once your on the ridge it isnt as bad but well done guys!
It was smarter and braver of you to make the decision not to continue, than to continue and potentially put yourself or someone else at risk. Well done to you and I hope you managed a different route. I know exactly how you felt because I've been there.

I'm glad you've posted this, the "GoPro effect" is real and often makes people think all of this is easier than it is.. leading to more mountain rescue efforts because people have gone too far to turn back (for their own ability)/ injured in the process. Keep it in the books and tick off some less exposed scrambles, you'll nail it another time 💪🏻
Yeah totally agree! That’s why we included our failure in this video as there’s not many videos out there showing people attempting and turning back. People should document that more so others can weigh their abilities up against it. Thanks for your comment and support ☺️🙌🏻
@@AbbyandGaz I was up there today and some idiot had brought their dog… it’s not a failure man! Learning curve ✌🏻 I don’t know if you’ve seen the tryfan Adam and Eve jump? My friends did it a couple of months back and I opted out. I just completed that last night, upload crib when you do get it! It’s even more interesting for people to watch you overcome fears and progress.

I did the full horseshoe when I was quite young. We were in the clouds for the entire ridge walk so neversaw the drop. Definitly right decision to turn back if not confident, not sure I could do it if could see the full drop.

Lol me and my Pal did the pyg track, absolutely shattered at snowdon summit and decided to go cribgoch on way back oml solid.
Climbing is not for everyone. When i got to the top of Snowdon i did a wee in my pants. I was lying down and looking over the edge. Be brave and say no to carrying on!!! Great video guys.

Yeah that got me to lol, Kinder Scout is nothing compared to Snowdon, I would be looking at your clothing too get some base layers it all makes for a more pleasant hike. It was a good thing you turned back at least you showed respect for the mountain, if you are near the Peak District there are plenty of Grade 1 scrambles that will give you experience and maybe you could try it again, grade 1 is the easiest scramble.
Ive climbed crowden clough up kinder scout! I think that prepared me for this 😂

Didn't think I was scared of heights until I did crib goch.
Weather came in whilst on the ridge, but by then it was too late to do anything other than keep going. Very slowly and bloody terrified. Running into dead ends and dynamic reaches/jumps is not something I'll do again. Proud of myself? Maybe a little but generally more wanting to give myself a slap cause I got to a bit higher than you were and thought I'm only going to get more scared here, but ushed on as weather was nice at that point.

You made the right decision on Cryb Goch - despite almost ideal conditions. This is an ascent and ridge that really, you need to do with a bit of proper scrambling experience behind you first. From what i could tell, you were not prepared for it and were looking for video content. I would recommend others thinking of doing this try this as a build up first from a mountaineering POV tick these off (One at a time of course) : From Ogwen: Y-Garn, Pen Y Ole Wen, Siabod (from Capel Curig) , Tryfan then maybe once youve done Tryfan maybe at least a couple of times, THEN do Cryb Goch. Ive seen too many times people trying Cryb Goch because they watched a youtube video. Next thing you know theres a helicopter rescuing people off the ridge...Be sensible.
Crib was the first scramble I ever did. I think you absolutely have to be aware of your confidence levels and general outdoor ability but you don’t have to build up to it. You either can or can’t manage it
Just done this in 40mph winds and rain all day, in the clouds. Absolutely no joke to be messed with.

Sorry for the pedantic correction, but, the car park is called Pen y pass, which translates to Head of the pass. The road goes through the Llanberis pass.
Me and my mate turned up and did Crib Goch, in February, no experience, ice and snow, one of the biggest mistakes of my life lmao

I enjoyed watching that, no shame in bailing out, I've done in on other routes and I'm a seasoned mountaineer. I've done Crib Goch maybe 20+ times but I still remember the first time when I got lost in the fog on the way up ;-). Can't believe how busy the summit was, I was up there two days ago and I was the only one up there - I just put up a video with some nice drone shots, check it out if you wish. Subbed.

I've done it twice. Second time I was going through depression so I was feeling suicidal and done speedrun.😂 At one point you start to feel urge to turn around but don't do it - it's easier to just finish it. It's not that hard if you ignore the height.
At least they had the savvy to turn back I think the problem now with walkers they see videos on TH-cam and think they can do it!!! And budget outdoor shops selling gear that doesn't work and up to the job!!! I did the grib years ago with all the right gear in case of and knowledge Along with ML training and hill and Moreland qualified I still see people in the mountains with jeans and trainer's!!!

what happened with car park? we parked in Lanberris and found a £80 fine for us when we returned even though we thought we had bought a ticket. We were very upset. Thought the car park owners were running a scam. You pay with card and out comes a piece of paper looking like a ticket which you put in your windscreen, only to find later it says your pyament was void and this is not a parking ticket. not the kind of thing you think to read carefully at the start of a hike
Oh gosh yes it is such a nightmare! We paid £40 or something silly just to park there until 8am in the morning and then moved it again to the town 🥲 they need to sort it out really!!
You can avoid all of these problems by leaving the cars out of the national park, and enjoy Eryri from the Sherpa buses
There’s a point of no return when climbing crib goch..basically it’s safer to go across than to climb down. You’re lucky you didn’t get there 😃😂

I remember when I was 13, I went up Crib Goch like a mountain goat, found it super easy.
Tried doing it 8 years later when I was 21, and had to turn back because it was just too hairy. Found it way too dangerous, not sure 13 year old me had great self preservation skills. 😂

You did the right thing if you weren't feeling it at the time. I will say at the point you stopped it looked like you took a slightly harder route up to the ridge. I've seen many people get themselves into trouble traversing too far around on either side heading up to the top and landing themselves in more grade 2/3 terrain.

I am always looking for the most insane hikes possible and Crib Goch is an entry level walk for me. I would only bother with Crib Goch if there is more to it like ice or as part of a one of the horseshoes. I can only do those things because I have the right equipment, experience and fitness. Well done for trying and well done even more for turning around. I’ve seen too many gibbering wrecks at the top. It would have taken everything you had in that state to get across with that cotton T-shirt and that huge backpack. The ridge is the easy part. There is more serious scrambling later on. You wouldn’t have enjoyed it.

First time on a mountain I was taken up that route in shoes jeans sports jacket 1960 low cloud very windy crawled all the ridge it was terrifying I was 16

Can totally understand why you turned back... It gets a lot worse once you reach the pinnacles just after the knife edge...... I've only done it once and swore never again.... Still get a buzz thinking about it though... Will mirror a previous poster with Watkins path its the hardest of all the classic routes and by far the best near the top..... I'd describe it as Pyg on steroids.... and you can go for a dip in the waterfall on the way down..
Best thing if you are not confident don't do it, good call.

@@AbbyandGaz I just watched loads of videos and went with correct gear and a few friends.
2 went back down because his girlfriend got scared, correct thing to do, they carried on to Snowdon and met up on way back.
If you try again try go with someone who's done it and they can coach you, having a confident person may help.

If you didn’t like the climb up to Crib Goch you would have hated the ridge. It is an epic route though for those with a head for heights.

By US standards is more than grade 1 rock scramble, maybe bottom part is scramble, last pitch could be 3-4 grade . Surprised no Helmut, not even back up rock and some some gear to put in some gear and anchor

The main thing about this video is you got off Crib Goch safe, A very foolish thing to attempt with no previous experience, The warning signs were there for a reason, A did see a video showing walkers climbing An Teallach as their first climb so you aren't the only mad ones! I would gradually build up your confidence on easier hills, The ones with huge drops can be terrifying to a novice, I suffered big fear on Liathach in the Highlands despite many mountains under my belt! I get your pain.My wife (whos a maraton runner)and i did the "ordinary"route up and down in 2hrs 40 mins.We thought we could do anything.We tried the same as you and failed the same as you.ho hum.
