I saw NIN live in 2006'ish at Red Rocks and it was a surreal experience for a few reasons. It was during Trent's "now clean and ripped" period so he was an absolute beast on stage for 2 and a half hours. It was like he summoned Iggy Pop, Henry Rollins and Maynard into his body to create something of pure talent and raw energy. They played the entire The Downward Spiral along with a bunch of The Fragile. Reptile is especially good live. And to top it off the entire crowd just chilled out and sat in awe at what was happening on stage. It was SO awesome to see and to see Trent doing well. It tops my list of concerts I've been to and I've been to a lot. Trent is a musical genius.
Trent Reznor is the best and will always be my the biggest musical inspiration!
I wish this were 10x longer. I would love to hear more of Trent's thoughts on writing this song.

“Musical genius” is a phrase that is bandied about a lot, especially by the music press. Regardless of what you think of Trent’s output, I think the term is accurate in his case. It’s much more rare than one thinks.

A song about someone's self-destruction and eventual suicide that saved mine and the lives of many others since its conception in 1994. Thank you with utmost sincerity, Trent Reznor, not just for Hurt but for The Downward Spiral as a whole.
This man gets it. It's all about the goosebumps. No one seems to understand that in music today
It is/was more than that to his fans though. It was 'social glue'. It was a common bond. This was OUR song. He expressed OUR pain. I was definitely "Down in It" and he helped me through dark times so I could eventually rise above it.
Man, you’re not digging enough. The thing that made NIN mainstream was the amount of footwork and research we did in weird used record shops in the cities because all radio played was Jethro Tull and Aerosmith. We created the demand for bands like NIN with the money we made as dishwashers and waiters. YOU have to go out & be that one person in the audience out of only seven or eight people there to see a new band in the back room of a bar in the worst part of downtown. If you can’t be bothered to show up for new bands because you’re too busy writing comments on TH-cam about why there are ‘no good bands out there,’ then you need to turn your phone off and go to your nearest club. If there are no clubs, then get a tent & live on the street in a town with decent clubs until you can scrape up enough cash to rent a shitty apartment with 10 roommates. Grohl did it & look where it got him. To find great music out there now, you’ve got to get out & live a life that puts you where the new sounds are.

In my opinion, and probably the opinion of most people who are music enthusiasts. That song is probably one of the saddest and most heartfelt songs ever made by man, it's not complicated, but it communicates the idea so clearly and so vividly that it connects to those who feel the way the song sounds. Nine Inch Nails is probably one of the best made music projects in history, and almost every song that Trent and his other partners that have worked with him have made have been timeless and inspirational. NIN is really the type of music any crowd can get into, which is very rare, I think that happens because the songs are really about reality, and it's made into a way that is both theatrical and realistic, its not corny, but its also not too real to the point to were its not entertaining, NIN has the perfect balance. Just my opinion, I could be full of it. But so far, to date, I haven't heard anybody that can get into the nooks and crannies of human emotion in that way, at least a handful of musicians have really done that, so far as I can see. Anyways.
"Kill it all away" that line makes me cringe every time
Personally, I find NIN discography hit or miss, but there is No denying Hurt is a wonderful song, and that Trent has Definitely come out with great work quite consistently, at least in terms of he Still has it, even if not Every song is as seductive and disturbing as "closer", anthemic and cathartic as "Head Like A Hole", relatable and sentimental as "Every Day Is Exactly The Same", or painful and yet heartwarming as "Closer".
@@BrennenKing-d5w I hear you, but the dude was a lot younger then, to be fair, and wasn't exactly going for Dylan-esque lyrics. I feel like you at least can't question his earnestness about it, including in this interview, compared to pop stars created in boardrooms, on their ghostwritten autotune ballads - which I'm sure was key in Johnny Cash's famous decision to cover it.

I remember having to defend the shear awesomeness of “Hurt” to my parents, when I was 14. They down-played like it will never be as good as Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, or Johnny Cash. Which were their favorite artists. When Cash’s cover of “Hurt” came out, it was pure bliss to make my parents eat their words.

Tent narrates so well. When he spoke at the Cure's induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he was so well spoken and straight from the heart.
This is the only version of hurt that matters to me.
I can't get over how much Johnny cash made it his own though. Even trent says this. Doubly heart breaking when that his last song, passing away a mere week or so later.
This episode was fascinating.
The amount of thought and effort he puts into his music is ridiculous. Every sound has a reason for being there. It kind of ruined the rest of the episodes for me honestly

@@GyroLamb NIN has been a fantastic constant in my life for 30 years. To this day I find a new noise in a song that I've been listening to for decades. It's truly genius. The song that drew me to the music was Something I Can Never Have.
Pretty Hate Machine & Downward Spiral got me through high school. I got bullied for being “alternative” and those albums were my sanctuary every day after school.

It was basically like the movie “The Craft.” Everyone listened to Christian music and/or the poppy dance/techno music that was popular then. @@stinkyham9050 me too the 90s were awesome!!...a large group of alternative kids...unless i ignored the main streamers...and bullying wasn't a thing in my school really...i grew up in England....i was a weird girl into metal,classical and abit of everything else i found a large group of alt kids from varying backgrounds which was nice!.Also i am brown..but i never felt like an outsider at school or in rock clubs it was just great!!!
I was shocked when i realized in America people got bullied for music tastes...or not being the "right" lol skin-tone and liking metal...its all so confusing.
A couple years after The Downward Spiral came out, I lived with a BF who beat the crap outta me. I'd lock myself in the bathroom to get away from him and blast Hurt on my headphones, it was like Trent was the only one in the whole world that understood what I was going through.

Seriously, one of the greatest song writers ever. People will be exploring his music in a hundred years after we are all dead and gone, like they do with Motzart.

the most underrated song on The Downward Spiral is the instrumental ''A Warm Place' after the madness of Big Man With A Gun, that sad and lonely but still beautiful melody in 'A Warm Place' really hits you in the feels. It's like you're reminded that the character in the story is still a human and fragile. It's like a ray of light on the album.
I found that song right after a breakup and it's literally the only reason I'm still here other than us getting back together

This dude is a legend. Been following him for close to 25 years now. Was lucky enough to see him live for the first time for hardly anything ( he basically told Ticketmaster to f themselves and toured at almost no financial gain for himself) I had just started a new job a week prior where I needed to be there at 5 in the morning , and then had horrible food poisoning two days before the concert. I was half dead when I got there but it was still one of the highlights of my adult life, hands down. He is a class act, I know how much he appreciates his fans.
My husband, a farmer, passed away in an accident a year ago. This song has been therapy for me. Thank you Trent.

I'm from Trent's hometown in Pennsylvania. I've met so many people acquainted with him and his family. Reading about how he was a loner, band geek and drama kid in school (like I was) and hearing him talk about struggling with senses of abandonment and not fitting in anywhere (like I do) make me feel less alone in this world. Mr. Reznor is unquestionably one of my greatest heroes and I'm immensely happy that he's still with us.

I was a young teenager when I first heard this song (13 or 14) and it stuck with me. It conveyed into words how I felt at that time. Lost, sad, alone, depressed, angry. I would sob as I sang along to those lyrics, sometimes almost screaming them out because I was so angry at the world for allowing me to feel this way. I get teary just thinking about it now. This song will always hold a place in my heart. A place no other song will take. It's beautiful, it's haunting, its tragic. Thank you Trent for sharing your talent with the world. Thank you for opening up mine.

NIN and Smashing Pumpkins were the bands that were different but amazing in their own way. Other bands too like Radiohead etc.
I honestly don’t know how anyone could even put Smashing Pumpkins in the same sentence as NIN.
The way Trent talks in here feels so poetic and true to life, when he talks about goosebumps, how it’s not about flashy playing… makes me think about life… how it’s not about how awesome and sucessfull you are it’s about how you feel and how other people make you feel.

Trent's my ultimate musical hero, and probably my biggest inspiration overall. Pretty emotional seeing him then and now, as we all age. All the problems I can relate to. I'm just so glad he's still here.

This actually speaks to the genius that is Trent Reznor and I don't throw that term around lightly. I have seen many interviews with Trent where he hints that he uses this approach often to craft his songs and as a musician myself, I get it...
He is a master at making you feel a certain way in seemingly nuance tones. the slight buzz of sounds that swell like insects during summer, the delayed notes on a quiet piano that feel like sunlight gently piercing through fog, the off putting industrial clangs for drums that disorientate and feels metallic. The music is so visceral as if I could touch it like slogging through mud barefoot and the squish squish of it burrows between my toes.
Easily in the top 20 songs ever written. "Goosebumps" songs are rarer than hens teeth, this one was so perfect the cover had the same effect.

Never really liked NiN but Trent was an absolute poet. He wrote amazing lyrics I can appreciate that. Hurt obviously being one of the greatest songs ever written. When Johnny Cash covers your song, you know you got a winner.
Actually on the Hesitation Marks (Deluxe Version) Trent himself speaks for about 45 minutes. He starts by saying "the original idea was to choose an interesting person who would ask me interesting questions and I'd give interesting answers. But the more I thought about that, it didn't seem all that interesting . . . " So for about 45 minutes or so you're getting an autobiography straight from the man who lived it and it IS VERY INTERESTING!

Trent has always been someone I’ve always wanted to sit down and talk to for hours about the writing/recording process, not to mention a million other things.
One of the prettiest, meaningful songs ive ever heard. And 20some years later and i still get goose bumps listing to hurt.

I wasn't expecting to cry when i watched the full episode. I'm over most of the feelings i had when this song meant so much to me as a teenager. But fuck if the memory ever really leaves you. I go through periods where I don't listen to NIN anymore and then i always come back.

I've been searching Netflix for something substantial and found this series. EVERYONE should write songs. It is the most fun, a great way to channel your passion, your anger, to beautify the world... whatever. I also found unexpectedly deep insights by watching the doc Jim and Andy, about what was going on behind the making of Man on the Moon.
Jim Carrey said that Andy Kaufman was one of the most free people that ever walked the earth because he refused to identify with a single persona. We all make the mistake of constructing this ME thing and it's so much more freeing when we let it go.
I also watched Cracked Up, a doc about comedian/impersonator Darrell Hammond from SNL, who was horribly abused as a child. Like so many comedians, he tried to make his mother laugh as a survival instinct. It's not mental illness, it's a mental INJURY that cannot be cured with drugs.
Nothing worse than feeling separated from your on thoughts in a dark and lonely place. People say get a hold of yourself and it's easy to say when it's not you that is lost and trying to find your way back. God is the answer out of that hell and calling for him will brighten that path you have been begging for.
Trent I completely understand & it is rational. I feel that way often & it scares the shit outta me. You are so unique, so talented. So eloquent when you speak & when you take what your feeling, put it into words, then add incredible sounds to make music that maybe not everyone understands, just those that see the world & feel similarly to you. You are a true gift that makes me feel less alone.

I tried NIN after seeing Axl Rose wear a Sin shirt (and all the weird relations he’s had with NIN). Heard Hurt and it gripped me so hard I bought TDS on the strength of the one song. Hated TDS because I had poor taste but kept listening to it partially because I had spent $20 on the album and partially because I just loved Hurt so much. It’s my favorite album now and Trent is my favorite musician.
I think musicians often get lost in ideas these days and miss that important X factor: goosebumps. Trent has an intuition for sounds that elicit a physiological reaction that heightens the emotional experience, an expert at creating tension.
I was obsessed with NIN in high school, Pretty Hate Machine era. We must have seen Trent tour 5 times in 3 years.
It's pretty surprising Trent is still alive, he seems like the kind of person that would've self destructed by now (like a lot of the music he wrote about sings about like Mr Self Destruct). But he has this real gift for recognizing notes and interesting sounds, electronically and sonically. I think him and Danny Elfman would do some great music together, and they are both legends to me.
Those comments just show what exactly hate about music community. I love NINs version. I love Cashs version. They are not comparable, they are different takes. Trent wrote this song. Cash reinterpretated it awesomely. There is neither point nor reason in insulting one of them. There is no point in saying Cash "stole" it or that Trent didnt write it, both is wrong. Cash was allowed to cover, Trent did write it. Just enjoy the music and shut the fuck up. Thank you.
Downward Spiral is pure genius. It's digital, as it was recorded and arranged on an early crunchy "daw" in a Mac, but all the sounds are, or seem, acoustic, analogue and pure. Still sounds fresh today at 30 years old.
He definitely succeeded with the goosebumps part.
I love nine inch nails in hindsight they represent the various phases of life. At the time the fragile came out I still was "spiralling" and I find most of the later works can be the tides of water circling the spiral on the outer reaches of the body or pool of work. Spiral will always be the apex for me
Never knew too much about Trent or listened to Nine Inch Nails. After learning about his hardships and accomplishments only through the love of his fans, I searched and found this video very happy to learn he is still alive. His story is definitely a great one.
It is a pretty immense body of work. Something for everybody, kinda.
A part of me has forever debt to having grown up on it and influencing me and how I hear music (I’m a musician), and the other part wishes I was just checking them out now. haha Enjoy.

That's my point, that doesn't make you special or somehow give access to pain and suffering not felt by literally hundreds of millions of not billions. Show me someone whose actually suffered and their pain has meaning. But this common crap. And yes, I've known MANY people who have OD.

He's such an amazing philosopher of music. So many artists write songs and can't even explain what the lyrics mean but Trent can tell you what the individual tones mean. A true genius.

I love Johnny Cash, but it sure is hard to convince some shit-kicker in the bar that an industrial rock/electronic band frontman originally wrote this masterpiece. They just refuse to believe it.

The textures and the timbre of the sounds in that song are the reason why, no offense, I'll always prefer the original to the Johnny Cash cover. Johnny's version is amazing, raw, and emotional. Trent's is equally amazing, arguably as raw, and arguably as emotional, but in a more musical way.
Im impressed that he has the capacity to share such intimate things about his emotional and mental state so candidly and with such humility. Very classy.
