I really do not know what is the best version of Hurt. This is great, The original is great and the Johnny Cash version is great. 3 entirely different versions and they are all superb and worthy of 4 stars each. I could listen to all 3 played back to back all day long.
The way Bowie makes this song vocally his own in the first two lines is brilliant and still their voices fit together in an unusual and so not mainstream way is remarkable. Never was very much into Bowie but this is just musical genius.

Cash still owed this song. Trent will forever be the originator and he grew to accept Cash's version. As a funny aside my newest "step" father a few years ago was trying to learn the Cash version. An aside, I am now 48 and he is a hypocrite Christian and 70 years old. He was mid sixties at the time. Spending my mother's money trying to make a Christian album and he intended to put this song on it. I waited until he got his "final cut" to explain who originally wrote the song and the subject matter (heroin)...lets just say he still hates me to this day. And I bring that up every Thanksgiving and X-mas...cuz I am a total ass.
i couldn’t imagine what’s going through trent’s head because he’s singing a song about being in such a low point in your life and singing that song in front of thousands with your childhood hero/idol. the chorus even affects me and i’m not the one singing the song.
@@annwhite2346 the problem isn't addiction. It's self-loathing, anger, regret, misery, pain, hatred, agony. Anyone can sing this song the right way and know it is right because they know it is. It's an invocation into an awareness. That's why this is the best version.
How I feel about this song probably isn't what it really says, but even though I've heard it 1000 times, it still kicks me in the face every time I hear it. These 2 singing, the lyrics & how well David & Trent go together is magic...

To me, music is a painting. You have the backing, the tone, the structure... One could look at the colors on the album cover and feel the match for the songs. most forget who is playing that because here it does not looki like Reeves, but the guitar is his own, Reeves is very underrated
My first and most enduring feeling about this video. I didn't know who that was, I'll have to look him up.
@@gregoryrasmusson6661 Does anybody know how to play that tapping in the beginning? Are there tabs for that anywhere?
Holy shit, David Bowie performing Hurt live with NIN....just wow, I think I just had an out of body experience. David's harmonies and his presence are other worldly!
Bowie and Nails also performed reptile together going line for line, and Bowie fucking rocks it! They ended the set by performing scary monsters and super freaks
Amazing! Bowie is simply masterful
That's Bowie's band. Adrian Belew on guitar.
Bowie had such an impressive stage presence. Together with Reznor, it is simply epic. Thanks for posting this.
I was blessed in my life seeing David Bowie perform with Nine inch Nails in this tour. It was a moment that i honestly felt Bowie....like he filled the space....and it was fucking magic.
Trent is so happy here. Really enjoyed seeing him this way.
Their dynamic is just insane.
I'm watching this over and over and it still touches my soul to bits.anyone else?
Me
This gives me chills. Badass.
I still have tears in my eyes
People this isn't just music it's art
Right on 🤘🏻💜
Music is literally one of the Arts...
So it's music
Extremely fortunate to have experienced this in Columbus 10/4/95
Marshall Mott I also was fortunate to see this tour in Hartford, CT. My only regret is not knowing more of Bowie’s catalog back then but I still appreciated his performance. I got to meet all of NIN after that show and have a pic with Reznor and the entire band signed my Downward Spiral book. Absolutely epic show and experience for a die hard NIN fan. RIP David!!
Te pasaste de verga carnal. Que chingón, la neta
Yes you are very fortunate and I am extremely jealous
i was there
95? I was 17. Thank god for my sister, 8 years older, that introduced me to music i would have missed. And my friends older brother that was constantly playing Jane's Addiction, R.E.M. and early "Grunge"
I really do not know what is the best version of Hurt. This is great, The original is great and the Johnny Cash version is great. 3 entirely different versions and they are all superb and worthy of 4 stars each. I could listen to all 3 played back to back all day long.
The Kermit version is surprisinly good.
the glen campbell version!!
Agreed. They all leave me feeling different and that's amazing
Peter Murphy's is great too.
@@scottcharney1091 I have not heard his but will have to look it up. But I am looking forward to him joining the Celebrating David Bowie Tour.
You know you've made it when you're onstage with David Bowie and he's singing a song you wrote!
The way Bowie makes this song vocally his own in the first two lines is brilliant and still their voices fit together in an unusual and so not mainstream way is remarkable. Never was very much into Bowie but this is just musical genius.
No one should ever forget that Trent Reznor was the creator of this famous song..after all.
Trent Reznor is more than a song, he is the master of his musical univers. A pure genius, as Bowie of course (RIP) ;)
Trent once said watching Johnny sing hurt was like watching a stranger kiss your girlfriend. Lots of great musicians of all genres but only a few one would consider Genius through and thorough --- Trent is pure musical genius.... I'm an old dude almost 60. Been a fan since Pretty Hate Machine---what's awesome is seeing kids, young generation of brand new fans awed by NIN. Fuckin Awesone is all this old fart can say. Sorry for the novel it's Christmas morning and my two year old (NIN fan by the way) is opening presents and my wife put a two pound Reese's in my stocking which I consumed in it's entirety and my head is buzzing like Cornholio in conjunction with edible weed I believe I am becoming invisible. Peace Out
Cash still owed this song.
@@michaelmunn1044 the truth has been told ;) You re fooking right dude, only 39 but really understand what you just said ;) Peace
Trent is no less than Bowie .. Bowie knew this
I just discovered this version!!’ Thr harmonization of trent and bowie gives me chills!!!! Gods!
I was told that two gods could not exist on the same stage, but they told me wrong...
2:41--The smile you get when you realize Bowie is singing your goddammed song with you! Nice!
Love them both. Bowie's voice is like butter. Iconic
It's been so many years. Sounds better every time I listen to them together. Miss you Johnny & David. Keep it up Trent!
i couldn’t imagine what’s going through trent’s head because he’s singing a song about being in such a low point in your life and singing that song in front of thousands with your childhood hero/idol. the chorus even affects me and i’m not the one singing the song.
Bowie had been to that low point himself, in the mid '70s. But then so had Johnny Cash. Only an addict could sing this song.
I was at this show in Phoenix, I remember there was no break between NiN and Bowie, instead bowie came out and they sang 6 songs together (3 NiN and 3 Bowie). I could not tell you any of the other 5 they did together that night. ;)
@@NobodyCaresALot that's exactly it.
Bowie created stunning sounds. These go straight in a scar we all have between our brain and our soul- and there, they take root- and generate our inner music....
yes
Excellent comment. David felt this song with every fiber of himself and he understands the song. Those deep low tones he hit made me awestruck.
I wonder if Bowie was working through Trents heroin addiction at this point. I know that He credits Bowie for it. This was really great.
Jenn Franklin I think just like Cash - they’ve been there , they’ve felt it -Reznor , Cash and Bowie have all lived this song
@@skeletalwreck8780 well said 🙂👍
It wasn't heroin it was coke I think. I know when he OD'd he took heroin thinking it was coke. That was around 2003 I believe
I see like it's heroin, no doubt. Maybe(!) speedball, but Trent looks like a typical middle 90s brown sugar user...no ego just patience and real joy! The coke just showin' full of yours ego (i think).✌ anyways.…epic performance💯❤
Bowie helped Trent to beat Heroine
I just say: "Thank You" for this beautiful Moment and the Guy that loaded this up.
NIN makes me wanna crawl back into my 90's Turtle shell, that industrial rock feel, never gets old even in 2020
Reeves Gabrels is an incredible underrated guitar player, incredible work with Bowie, guitar made low profile and great harmonisations
OMG I have never seen Trent smile quite like that B4. I can't imagine how U must feel as the writer of any particular song and have icons like Cash & Bowie admiring & performing that song!
his smile is honestly simultaneously heartbreaking and heartwarming
My favourite iteration of one of my favourite songs. The perfect culmination of artistic ability on this version. Trent and Bowie are such an inspiration to me. I wish I could thank both of them for everything they did for me.
I love bowie! This is amazing! I know Trent loved this. I couldn't imagine getting to be on stage with Bowie.
I wish they had done a studio recording of this version. I love Reeves Gabrels’ guitar arpeggio in the verses. It’s so odd, yet works very well for me.
Totally agree! It’s just a bit off kilter, and it colors the melody so beautifully. Ethereal I think is the word for it.
Its that Parker Fly sound
Its insane to have two music icons of different genres/decades sing one of your songs. Trent is so different than Bowie or Cash its a testament to the idea that music, lyrics can truly connect people. Johnny, Bowie you are each missed by millions
Damn... What a trip it must've been for trent to see one of his musical idols sing on a song he wrote in his bedroom... Epitome of made it
Ive come back to this video so many times. Never will this be again such a special time and performance. Sure do miss bowie and this time of trent. So much passion conveyed . They harmonize beautifully
David Bowie's voice is so unique and no voice will ever replace it.
i got to see this with my MOM on 9/22/95 in camden NJ She was a HUGE!!! Bowie fan,, it was so groovy NIN played we moshed it up but when Bowie came out everyone just chilled and really listened to him sing and watched a true performer work. Fantastic show
Ozz Freak wow i went w my mom 2 on sept 12, 95 in mass to see them wat a awesome show i was 13 my first concert and my first contact high lol wow times were so much better back than.
Still can't believe our beloved Bowie has moved on to another realm, would have just died to see this in person. The more I see of Bowie I realize he was captured in image and voice in so many iconic rock moments in time. thank you for this post, a lovely opportunity I would elsewise not have had.
David Bowie really got that stage charisma that even if he just simply stood there without doing anything, I feel overwhelmed and can't take my eyes off him. Damn I was born too too late....
100% YES. You feel his powerful presence even if he is just standing still
It's never too late... back catalogue, its timeless..
Bowie was such an all around musician...not just a front man...he had the humility to really compliment a song just as he did in under pressure....
@@jonocom777 this is perfectly put and not to be forgotten☺
The man could be so very Humble..
Don't complain. I discovered Bowie the day he died, and I was in London the same time as Ziggy. I was completely oblivious. But the ride back through his career has been wonderful, and I discovered all those bands, like NIN.
Wow. I was there. Southpark meadows. May 2005. Peak of the most fucked up and best times of my life and I was with them that night. Thanks for uploading.
David Bowie must be one of the coolest performers ever He's just..... Composed, awesome song.
One of my favourite performances ever. Absofuckinglutely amazing.
NiN + david bowie... unlikely combination but greatfull they performed together this is an awesome performance!
They collabed before, in "im afraid of americans" (search it up)
@@anonentropy3171 I'm Afraid of Americans came well *after* this 1995 tour. David Bowie's song "I'm Afraid of Americans" was recorded for Bowie's album Earthling that came out in 1997. Reznor did a *remix* of that song and also appeared, with Bowie, in the video.
NiN and Gary Numan came a bit later... equally good collab, except it's a bit reversed - Trent ends up just playing backup synth and tambourine for Gary! But let's face it, no-one upstaging Gary Numan!
I didn't even know this existed, but now I am so damn glad I do.
This is one of the best performances I've ever seen.
Wow. How did I just learn this exists? I’m blown away.
Hands down my favorite concert, I am so grateful I got to see it.
OMG incredible the two voices together...just marvelous! sheerly haunting. beautiful.
Wow!!!! I'm so glad I went down the NIN rabbit hole today and found this video.. their harmonies worked well together🤌🤟🏼.. R.I.P
Me too! Never knew this existed until today. Great song that I've always loved and to find Bowie doing it, perfection, always true to himself, whatever that was at the time.
So exciting to discover new awesome music 🎶..I see that there is hope for the music 🎶 scene
My favourite part is right after the first chorus, where you can see Trent really get in his feels.
Trent can't believe his luck. keeps pinching himself, "is that David Bowie over there? Shit he nails the harmonies so well."
Did anyone else get goosebumps while listening to this amazing collaboration? I did
Me too
Oh yeah 😎
And a shiver between the shoulder blades. Magic. Pure magic.
I cried
Bowie and Reznor, two badass musical geniuses singing this amazing song together. What could be better
This Bowie, the Brooding British Mortician from the Eno trilogy, was not his most popular but truly his most eclectic.
Trent is smiling so hard harmonizing with David Bowie.
The harmony between David's and Trent's voices is incredible.
I played on stage amongst some of my metal heroes for 14 yrs, 5 months after walking away I performed one last song, 'Hurt' this version is an absolute gift!
You can tell how stoked he his singing with Bowie....
This was beautiful. I am so grateful to have found it. Trent’s smile makes me cry.
This is by far my favorite version of this song. I can't believe something so prolific exists.
Nope, Johnny cash’s version is eons better, sorry to say
What do you think "prolific" means?
I don’t think prolific is the word here.
jdspreest you have mental problems if you think Cash has the best version of this song
@@jdspreest good version, but the original is the best, and this one is almost tied with it.
Two of my all times favourite singers singing together I'm screaming!!! And Trent smiling and Bowie so amazing as usual!!! AAA it means so much for me🖤🖤🖤😭
Also it feels like they both didn't want to outsing one another and my heart's melting for that, they're such incredible performers, simply the best!
This is the BEST version of "Hurt" in existence. No one can convince me otherwise.
Have you heard Johnny Cash sing it?
@@samisatlacc7736 Yes, and I hate it. I recognize that Cash is a music legend, but that song just doesn't fit him.
@@GarionOrb Cash turned it into something else then owned it - THAT.
If you reference or compare it to the NIN original, you miss what he did with it.
Also, both Cash +Bowie did Reznor a favore bcs that song, in its o.g form, was very incomplete.
@@samisatlacc7736 Sorry, I completely disagree.
I'm 41, I have this version, the original and Cash's. All are great in their own way
To me, music is a painting. You have the backing, the tone, the structure... One could look at the colors on the album cover and feel the match for the songs. Then there's Bowie, who brings an entirely different palette of vibrance and inherent darkness. The choruses take a turn from this dismal spiraling despair, and replace it with a feeling of letting go and peace in a sort of death, or change.
This was amazing to hear and thank you for sharing.
this fucking tears my heart apart. the intensity. the involvement. i'm in tears.
Wow, Bowie's voice is brilliantly complementary to this great song - natural fit!
this is such an incredible performance. rest in peace, david.
It's nice to see him smile during this song, it must have been a really painful song to write and now it makes him smile because he is singing it with one of he's heroes, it changes everything
