I have had my x15 605 hp 2050 torque for 2 years now and the only problem I've had was the egr coolant went out at 80,000 miles. Truck now has 330,000 miles on it now and still all good 👍
Yeah for real. I’ve seen many needing rebuilds at 4-500k, tons of emissions issues, cam issues and so on. Just like every other emissions motor . They’re junk
@@paulbracewell4915 I wonder why they don't just make hybrid engines and cut out all the emissions nonsense. Making a smaller emissions-free engine being supported by a simple large battery should be significantly more reliable than making a normal engine and suffocating it with all these fragile emissions toys. Is hybrid tech really not viable?
Steve- (Greatest Salesman ever)... Purchased mine about 6 months ago from you, zero issues. My local Cummins dealer is providing routine maintenance/service, and with the exception of a little fuel mileage loss after the first software update, I am completely satisfied. Pulling flats in the mountains of Kentucky and West Virginia, our’s gets a real work out, but with the 2050 torque we handle the grades with stride, while delivering a solid 6 MPG. Yeah, we sacrifice a little mileage running a big hood 389, but looks and appearance are quite important to us, as our family has always had long hoods since the 90’s. Such praise coming from a Caterpillar lifer, should speak volumes. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Jerald! Glad to hear the good review.Wishing you and your family a very Marry Christmas. Call me if I can ever help you with anything, see you on the next one!
2050 torque has it's advantages but it will grind your rears all to pieces if you get stuck somewhere and start spinning your wheels to try to regain traction and free yourself... So a lot of, especially heavy haul, operations turn their 2050s back to about 1900 for driveline component safety.
@@relaxationstation7374 Man stop it!!!! 2050 torque you just got to know how to handle that truck. You don't cut the truck back you just learn how to handle it. S M H !
😍I bought an extremely well maintained 2013 Freightliner fleet truck that has a 450 hp Cummins ISX under the hood and I initially had about a $45,000.00 maintenance nightmare with that engine until I took it to The Cummins Gold Store in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and had it worked on properly and had The DPF Filter and DOC Cannister replaced on it at about 650,000 miles, since then this baby has run like an absolute beast and I have had absolutely zero engine related problems all of the way up to my present 850,500+ miles and still hammering at 1,600 rpms all day long!😍
Big problem with the fleet trucks is you never know how many different drivers drove it. Is it a econ motor by chance? Seems like the economy motors have had more issues than the performance series ones.
@@I_like_turtles_67 You also have mechanics that will deliberately not fix the DEF system because they know it's a cash cow. It's not super complicated and definitely shouldn't cost 45k, wtf
I was at the press introduction. I was greatly impressed by the intelligent improvements to reduce fuel consumption, and with the engine's responsiveness.
I'm more of a CAT guy, but it's nice to see Cummins has finally figured out all the issues they've had in past years with the ISX and are now building a much better engine from the "ashes". I don't think the pre-emissions ISX (CM870) engines were too bad, either...like you said in the video, Steve, '08-'12 had most of the problems.
Wow I had an 2000 N14 red top that was one tough motor. Sold it with 965000mi and the friend who purchased it put another 480000 mi on it and overhauled it the tech said he thought he could have put 300000 more mi. So the x15 has had big shoes to fill.
I have the 3rd Gen X15 w/2050 torque. In my opinion the N14 was their old reliable. This engine is a very close runner up to it. 250,000 with not one issue with the engine at all. Only issues i experienced was with the $10,000 TCM Wiring Harness to the Allison 6 spd AT. The truck still being under Warranty. That issue was taken care of at a very minimal cost to me. Not a sneeze or a cough of any kind since. Its in a 2018 International HX620 cab with a Galbreath Right Hook Roll Off work unit installed to the 290 inch chassis.
Had N14 yrs ago , back in 99, 2000, ran great ...small issues , but wear n tare i guess , starter , plastic injectors , leaked. Replace kept riding .. Sold it after 912 So today im thinking of getting back in the game ... Seen 2018 , international. With this X15. Has 437 000 on the clock . What should i be looking for .or ask the salesman Thanks in advance
I have a 2018 567 that I haul logs up in Canada with. I run a 7 axle configuration. I gross out at around 140000 lbs. I have the x15 565 with 2050 torque. I love this motor. It has around 4500 hours on it now without a single trip to the dealership for warranty work. I am very happy with the fuel mileage I get from it as well. I haul heavy all the time and it is way better than my old truck that had a C15 cat. I also have a 2000 KW with an N14 in it. The trucks work side by side every day. 👍🏻

@@jking4020 not a Cummins rep. So my truck now has almost 9000 hours on the motor. In the last year it’s finally had to have some warranty work done. I’ve had to change an egr cooler and they just did a recall on the exhaust manifold. So far it’s all been warranty. Keep in mind my motor is the x15 performance series. I know people that have the economy x15 and they have had nothing but problems. I do know of people that have had problems with the camshaft but both guys ran the sinblend 10w30 oil. I was one of the first Carhauler to have it.. regional runs daily.. almost 190k and only one issue that downed me 5 days for a turbo sensor.. nobody had it in stock! Other than that.. very nice engine
sounds like cummins should invest in their parts network and advertise/guarantee a specific parts availability.. if you couldnt get something for 5days in 2019/2020 i have to imagine thats 5 weeks in 2021/2022.. but everyone always says how its the downtime that costs you not the repair.. so why not advertise that everypart for the engine is within 24 hours of anywhere in the continental US is that really such a hard ask.. surely a 24hour delivery radius is pretty large team up with amazon or one of the delivery companies like UPS or fedex and have them stock and deliver the parts for them
Davco is the ONLY way to go...👍 The Paccar filter is total junk. Also as you stated, the bigger CFM Air Compressor option is a must have. Why it's not standard is idiotic i think.
Had 3 Peterbilts with Cats. 2 c15’s and a 6nz. All of them were very problematic and costly to fix. Will never buy another truck with a cat. My 98 century with a NI4 is the best engine I’ve ever had

I have one I a freightliner matched with a 18spd and it performs like a champ. My average gross is around 130 and it pulls hills and maintains speed quite well.
My 2019 with 150k just got in framed. Leaking liners. It's one thing after another with this engine for me. Exhaust manifold leaks, fuel pump and air compressor. It's been at Cummins 3 weeks going back in the morning.

Peterbilt Steve my coach came with a Cat C13 415hp..... I had it ripped out and installed a brand new left over ISX600 that I got a deal on. The coach doesn’t even change gears on hills, holds the speed and climbs anything now :)
We just spec’d two new fire apparatus with 600hp X15s. We have used nothing but 500hp ISX12s since 2012. I’m excited to see how these hold up in the fire service. I’m also looking forward to the X12 which should be available to us soon.
That in fact should be interesting, Volvo says that their customers absolutely swear by the power and efficiency of their 11 liter engines and I can personally vouch from 31 years of international over the road commercial trucking experience for the dependability of Detroit Diesel's fabled 12.7 liter Series 60 engine, so a 12 liter Cummins engine should be interesting to see in action.

I run the same fuel filter setup on my 19 w900 and didn't change it till 28k miles and wasn't having issues just figured it was time. They have the emissions crap figured out pretty good now. Would recommend this engine to anyone over a paccar for resale purposes and not being under paccars control if something does go wrong...have a great day everyone and just my opinion
I purchased a 579 from Steve with the x15 in it. Hands down I love this engine, I do have the paccar fuel filter and I have experience the filter clogging issue. It seems to be bad during the winter months, I went with a different micron filter still within Cummins specs and that solved the issue for me.
Glad to hear the new motors are doing good. Unfortunately I still have a bad taste in my mouth having to inframe my 2012 model at 360K miles due to oil consumption. They knew it was an issue it was their mistake but never fessed up to it and let all their customers foot the bill. Paid 19K they did policy it gave me back 7K so in the end I paid 12K that should still be in my pocket. That was very dirty on their part.
Yeppers, I have a 2013 KW T660, Build date is 2012. Engine has only about 600,000 and change and it's consuming oil like crazy. It's in the shop now as we speak. Can't wait to hear the results of this! Lol
In the past one year Oct '19 and Oct '20 I've run two X15 engines and while I like them a lot and have had no issues with them, I don't understand the banging / slapping / clanging noises these engines make especially when you get into the throttle, the louder they get. While the engines sound like they are about to spill their guts all over the highway, after a while I've learned to ignore the noise and run. I've never heard a H-D diesel make that sound before and I wish Cummins would at least educate us as to what the noise is and what effect it has on the engine if any. The noise emanates from the drivers side of engine and sounds exactly like steel smacking steel. At 125k miles, it starts hard and slow and shutdown occurs in less than 2-seconds flat which is kind of frightening but again, just ignore it and go about business. It's a great running engine, just has a few quirks that take some getting used to. All the X15 engines do it, just don't understand it.
I was talking to a friend who has a w9 with the PACCAR filter. He hasn't had issues when only running inside CA. When he's fueled up in Nevada. The blend did cause some issues. So it has to be the quality of the fuel/blend. Playing a big part in the paccar design.
I’ve had no issues at 400 hundred thousand kms in a K200 Fatboy cab towing on a b-double quad , quad axel configuration set up and i take the x15 to max revs , speed and hell and back @ 900 hundred Km’s a night .

On all machinery failure rates are usually highest when they are new or super old, but rarely in the middle. Infant and senior mortality so to speak. If these make it 300k, I'd say they are well past early failure. Early failure is usually very quick. Senior failure with these you'll need to wait 10-15 years I am guessing. That's when plastics and shit will start breaking down from exposure to their environment. Electronics may get wonky by that time.
Just wait... I thought the same after 400000 miles you’ll start thinking 🤔!!! Should I get a new truck or keep dumping money in this pit...😆😆 went from 5 set of injectors to transmission, sensors; man I can keep going. The 2017 and later Efficiency Series has changes in the valve timing that increase the expansion of the gases on the power stroke. This, and other changes that affect things like breathing, makes for a substantial reduction in fuel consumption.

My 18' 389 with Cummins X15 Performance needs an overhaul at 339,000 miles. Engine leaked coolant since the very beginning of running it. No one could find the correct issue. I’ll give a good tip. Get an APU don’t idle your truck engine and problem solve. Had a 780 Volvo did 1300000 miles but way too many injectors and sensors, list goes on and on. Don’t mind any engines as long as they’re reliable they’re ok. For now I’m liking my Cummins X15.

The best modification that you can do is have a proper MINDSET. Drive a truck the way a truck is suppose to be driven. Nobody is pointing a gun to your head and tells you that you need to have big power plant under the hood to outrun and outpower the rest of the trucks out there.

The ISX12 was discontinued for diesel. The X12 just came out in 2018 and is going in more applications each year. It will be in the Freightliner day cab this year.
Had our X15 2020 565 hp for 3 years. Sleeved the cylinders at 423k in Vegas due to low or loss of compression. We run intermountain & northwest year around, and gelling is frequent when transitioning from south to northern fuel supplied depots. We always carry 2 filters for everything. Currently have 542k on a 3 year old truck. Replaced the transmission harness in Tucson, clutch replacement in Cheyenne, windshield fluid tank in Missoula for a stuck float, and 2 DEF pump replacements (Mobile/ West Memphis). We've had more shop time on the Pete than a Volvo, Freightliner, and International combined for a 3 year old truck.

No, you need something in the 3:50 or better, I have 3:42 ratio in mine, the only reason I do not swap out the gearing is the fact that I have an 18 speed manual transmission. If I had a ten speed, I would want at minimum 3:55. If I was continually hauling at max weight, 80,000 gross, I would want 3:75 or even 3:90 depending on where I pirmarily haul.
If you have a Paccar fuel processor on your engine use Paccar primary fuel filter K371012 in fall/winter. It’s a 30 micron filter. I put 350k on a ‘16 ISX15. Oil/filters changed every 30k miles. ZERO PROBLEMS. Use K371011 in spring/summer. It’s a 10 micron.
Better solution, throw the Paccar in trash, replace with Davco 👍 And use the coolant heated one so you don't have to play the micron game in the winter, sucking in bigger damaging debris

k pelkey and steve. I have the same issue. Vibrates so bad I have to get out of the throttle. I took it in to dealer and they drove it with a sensor but did not find it. Bought it from Tulsa (sorry not from Steve directly)
@@robertl3632 I know what you mean I have to get off the throttle also when it does it real bad. Mine doesn't do it all the time does yours? I haven't got mine back in to have the clutch checked but when it was new I had it adjusted because I was getting a vibration which the adjustment did take care of it that was a completely different vibration than what I'm feeling now. Seems like a fuel-air engine issue to me which should throw a code but who knows keep me updated on what you find out and I'll do the same
@@kpelkey6829. I'll keep you posted. I noticed the vibration ever so slightly when I drove it bobtail after picking it up. However, when loaded heavy and up a grade it becomes so bad, clearly something is wrong. It helps to be in a lower gear (higher rpms) but that prevents me from being down where I want torque. I'll check out the clutch fee travel but I am concerned Ill adjust the clutch brake out. I also noticed that the driveline had been moved after painting. I was told that was normal as they do a run at the factor to adjust once assembly is done. It does not do all the time, or at least it's not as bad. So at least I believe it narrowed to the the fuel/air issue, clutch adjustment, or driveshaft. Sigh.
So if I get a 16 or newer truck with a Cummins it will be this good engine? I was actually probably going to buy a 2016 T680 with a Cummins soon so that would be good to hear.
2017 and up from what I've seen. In 2017 you have to watch out to make sure it's an x15 as their are some with isx engines with the known liner problem.
ISX was just like the gas engines starting out. Everyone was having issues early. Know of a lot of cars and trucks back then. Some could not get 30,000 miles. Smog stuff was stopped up. Look at those today, for the most part. NO issues on gas engines now. Everyone rushed the Diesel design in way early. Or waited late in the game to start testing. Should have been testing in the 80's. For the release years later.

Lmao

The problem is not the engine is the DPF system......
Yes, the EGR pipe on an emissions ISX is the downfall of the engine.

Sold it after 912
So today im thinking of getting back in the game ...

They all ways been here they have been number one since the start of diesel engines. Cummins is how the west was won.
All the X15 engines do it, just don't understand it.
geartrain-gears were cut for reliability, not low noise.

6 trucks all down for fuel pump codes, personally I'm thinking software issues as they all are going in to protection mode.
If you use Davco will it void the warranty if you don’t use Fleetgaurd
I dont believe that is true....
I was wondering if you could edit this video to add a few more pauses and UHHs and UMMs....thx
CAT fan boys are the worst. "iF It AiN't A kItTy cAt iT's DoO dOo".
Lots of truth to that statement
Great video. Still have questions cause am in tbe market for a new truck- so which ISX ur comparing with? I got 05 ISX.
13-17
Can you please read my comment and answer this question. Did Cummins fix the problems with the injector cup??? The ISX is horrible in that department. I called Cummins to order a head because obviously I had issues with the injector cups. Cummins told me that I was going to be the 138 order for a head.
They did, zero issues with the X15
@@SteveCarbone thank you!!!!! I couldn’t get any answer anywhere else.
Under recall as of March 29, 2021 certain models
Does this x15 have a significant amount of issues less than the current paccar mx13 motor?
From my experience my x15 has 288k miles on it and I have not had any issues with the emission side of it. Now I did have camshaft issues at 213k. Had to be replaced. Ran my mx13 till 456k. Had check engine light on every over week. Blow head gasket at 359k two injectors went out. 9 nox sensor over 3years I've had it. I'm having better luck with Cummins than I did with the paccar engine.
Kendrick I appreciate that insight. But was that mx13 the updates model that got rid of all those sensors? I have an uncle that owns an 12 model year paccar and it’s been nothing but problems also but it’s first generation. I don’t know anyone with the 16 year model or newer
@@maxespinosa02 mine was a 2014 model paccar. 500hp. I think they made some changes for the 18 models but I cant speak on those cause I didnt have one.
Kendrick thank you again
@@maxespinosa02 no problem.
Glad to hear this review!
I’m curious if you know how the X12 is performing?
Discontinued so no idea
ISX12 is discontinued for diesel. X12 is going into more and more applications now.
@@SteveCarbone ISX12, not X12
@@MrPizzaman09 Exactly, hence I asked about how the newer X12 is performing?
@@rowmacg It's doing really well. So far it's mostly in firetrucks, cement mixers, large Freightliner dump trucks and coach buses, but it will be in the Freightliner day cabs this year. So far people are liking it and is proving to be reliable. Cummins put a lot of time and money into developing it so they can get back into the midbore market. Other OEMs as of right now aren't putting it in their chassis yet due to it being additional competition to the midbore engines they make themselves.
It’s probably the bio-fuel that is causing the filter issues.
And... what is your thoughts today?? I've heard of many issues occurring for many guys in the field!!
Have one with 100k miles under the factory warranty with vibration and low power issue, been in 5 different dealers and every one after finding out that it is under warranty can not find what is going on....
I got a brand new Peterbilt same engine, start losing coolant right away, service at Peterbilt don’t really want to fix truck for some reason, truck is under Warranty, any ideas on what could be, thank you
Thats hard to hear about a dealership. Any Cummins facility can handle it. You dont have to go to the dealer where it was purchased.
@@SteveCarbone, Peterbilt at Amarillo Tx scam me, they said that it was a loose hose clamp on radiator hose, I took it back to Peterbilt at okc and they’d found the problem, they said it was the egr cooler witch that’s what I ask them to check the very first time I went there, I’ll find out if that’s what the problem was, thanks for the feedback
X15 400hp ratio 3.25 is good for pull drive van
No, you need something in the 3:50 or better, I have 3:42 ratio in mine, the only reason I do not swap out the gearing is the fact that I have an 18 speed manual transmission. If I had a ten speed, I would want at minimum 3:55. If I was continually hauling at max weight, 80,000 gross, I would want 3:75 or even 3:90 depending on where I pirmarily haul.
Here in Hawaii it’s the def system so it derates the motor till fixed
Shit now you make me want to go buy a x15 in a newer truck. I had some many issues with my 08 peterbilt. PDI help me out with the turbo etc
@Performance Diesel Inc is the way to go.....
@@SteveCarbone PDI is horrendous, they have destroyed more trucks in the past few years than I can count.
How much horsepower is the performance series? What is the difference?
If you have a Paccar fuel processor on your engine use Paccar primary fuel filter K371012 in fall/winter. It’s a 30 micron filter. I put 350k on a ‘16 ISX15. Oil/filters changed every 30k miles. ZERO PROBLEMS. Use K371011 in spring/summer. It’s a 10 micron.
Better solution, throw the Paccar in trash, replace with Davco 👍
And use the coolant heated one so you don't have to play the micron game in the winter, sucking in bigger damaging debris
Agree. Both my 16 isx and 19 x15 came from factory with a 10 micron filter which is fine until winter...then switch to a 25 and works much better
Are the guys who are not having issues all using a apu unit
Good question!!!
No sir, some yes some no but Cummins will tell you idling is not an issue with this X15
I don’t have an APU on mine bought it back in April done a lot of idling and no issues at all love my X15
If your idling your supposed to raise the rpm up.
2nd. Heard from cummins if you are going to idle, bump up idle to 1000, mine sets at about 920.
Just bought an X15 500 horse and notice a loud clacking noise at idle and when taking off. Is that normal???
Really wish CAT was still a competitor in the class 8 truck market.
True.. they make a decent looking on-highway truck.. but the c13 engine is trash since navistar makes it lol
I'm glad cat never stooped to the level of Cummins in embracing draconian regulations.
@@jonw4501 I bet their employees are glad they still have jobs
@@lngsht8168 I bet Cummins employees contemplate suicide after every work day for what a spineless, incompetent company they work for. Even gen 1 renesis wenkels last longer than is.
What's next? Cummins demanding a higher minimum wage so they can pay their workers a higher wage?
Wow surprised that a cumanunk even lasted 2 years thats a miracle
Steve, I love your vids but I'd love you to build a 2018 567 Hertiage with the X15 565hp, 2050tq, 18 speed. Blue base with silver stripe cab/sleeper with NO sleeper extensions and Army Tan frame color stretched to a 300" wheelbase!! This is just a few ideas of my dream truck!
That sounds like an amazing ride Shaun! Maybe someday we will do something like that....
Check the truck sale papers there are a lot of 2 or 3 year old trucks with 350-450 thousand miles and this motor for sale due to too many problems
Show me an ad with an 2-3 year old truck 18-19-20 with a Cummins and a rebuild. Please post the link here for all to see! Best of luck....
I know this post is old but the trucks you speak of for sale are generally fleet trucks that are being replaced with newer trucks. Fleets like to keep them in warranty.
60000 on mine I've got a vibration around 1200 RPMs under a hard pull dealer can't seem to find doesn't do it all the time to me feels like the engine any ideas? Don't get me wrong I absolutely love this engine other than that it's been trouble-free and Pulls like a mule!!!! If I was to describe the vibration is very similar hitting rumble strips at about 45 miles per hour
Hey Kurt, how much free play is in the clutch pedal? I have seen this cured a couple times before by having a little more than usual free play but could also be in the driveline. Just throwing darts here, hope all is well!
@@SteveCarbone ten 4 I'll give it a try thank u sir
k pelkey and steve. I have the same issue. Vibrates so bad I have to get out of the throttle. I took it in to dealer and they drove it with a sensor but did not find it. Told me it was the engine needing broken in (about 20k miles). Seems like drive shaft or engine maybe. I hope to get it to another dealer to have it checked out.
@@lungelinecowboy thanks for the reply. I will wait a little longer so I can get a 2017 with the X15.
Improved fuel economy in 2017 if you can hold out for one of those.
Remember people, we’re not talking about your CAT, Detroit Engines. Looks like you just want to brag about how good your engines are. How many miles you have ahhh ahhhh.. think🤔🤔🤔🤔 out with the old in with the new... technology is evolving, getting better than your flip phone. Remember when NASA need it a 10 x 10 room to run a computer???? Now that 10x10 we have it in the palm of our 🖐.
X15, good for me long as it's not yellow
Big 10-4
Had a bad carrier bearing in mine around 185000 stoped some of the vibration?????
What I really want to know is What motor is better for a Heavy Haul Application Power Wise, This Cummins X15 or the Detroit DD15/16 in a Western Star.
I have both motors, and you should go with the Cummins!
The Cummins will out perform the DD15 and the DD16 by ten fold.
X15 is way to go.
It's too bad kitty cat hopped out of the game but I ran some construction equipment with some engines that have had somewhere around 15 16 liter size motors in them and if only those were put in semis these days kitty cat would still be the king I know it
True, if the worst motor of the past 20 years was back in the game and better it would be a good thing.
