A lot fans came to the wrong conclusions regarding this season. Many think Gordon choked and lost it in the final four races; what many don't realize is that Gordon scored more points than any other driver during the last ten races. It wasn't at the end of the season that the title was lost, it was the lost points in all of those previous races that finally showed how catastrophic those results were in the long run.

If you give Jeff roughly 10th place finishes in each of the first two plate races of 1996 races instead of back-pack finishes, he would have won the title by about 100 points. Jeff got owned by gremlins not of his own making ala Bill Elliott in 1985.

  • @efan2012

Jeff's comeback at the start of the year alone is worth praise and respect.. he came from being 40 something in points to being in the top 10 very fast, not many else coulda done it. Terry just couldn't be denied that year.. he deserved it. His mid 90's run never got the praise of Jeff's but he was damn solid and very underrated in the #5.
To be honest if he had got the #5 in 1990 instead of Rudd I see him maybe winning the title in 1991 or at least giving Dale a harder fight. Terry wasted 4 years of prime era in crappy cars. Jeff never had that misfortune.

Despite the 10 wins, too many bad finishes did the 24 in that year. The #5 team wanted it more, especially after Terry broke his hand and still finished 5th at Phoenix. It also took them half the season to recover the points from starting off 42nd and 40th the first 2 races. The next 2 years, the competition would not be so lucky. The guy won 47 races in 5 seasons. Jeff Gordon always had a habit of stuggling to finish well at season's end. The late season decline almost cost him the championship in 1995 and 1997. If not for a blown engine during the Fall Charlotte race in 1996, Gordon would be champion.

Your ending point about what if Jeff would've done better at Daytona and Rockingham is a moot point. Terry finished 24th in the Daytona 500 after leading the most laps in that race when a piece of debris killed the engines power and he too like Jeff blew the engine at Rockingham, funny thing is they were running 1st and 2nd when they both fell out. Terry did just as poorly at those races as Jeff did. Terry deserved that championship, his 2 timely wins and consistency were enough to fend off Jeff's 10 wins. Awesome year that would not be rewarded like that in today's point system.

As much as I hate to say it, Jeff Gordon ruined NASCAR. He made it nationwide and highly corporate, which, although popularized it for about 15 years, ultimately led to its downfall. He opened the gap for the cookie cutter drivers and created a culture that prioritized wealth and marketability over humbleness and hard work. Less Southern drivers, more market drivers=loss of base. I was born after Earnhardt's death but I probably would've been an intimidator fan if I grew up in the 90's. And this is coming from a Connecticut kid. Nothing against Gordon, since he certainly earned all of his achievements. However he got caught up in the glamor of celebrity life and indirectly created a pathway to the sport's demise.
Edit: Bring back NW and Rockingham! Worst decisions NASCAR has ever made.
