Largest Crash in NASCAR History

- Thanks to Rustyfan for this great capture. In 1960 Daytona Superspeedway hosted this sportsman race. 68 cars entered into the race, back then there were a maximum of 68 cars in a superspeedway race. Coming out of turn four 37 cars get into a massive wreck where at least six cars get on their roofs. Amazingly, evryone walked away from this.
By the way, I am really getting tired of people having arguments that lead to name calling and slander. If I see a comment that put another member down or uses any derogatory language, I will delete it and any replies to it immediately. Also, if you do not like racing or think it is a sport, that's fine, but at least give some logical thought into a comment that you post. I will once again delete any comment along the line of "nascar sucks" or "nascar is for dumb rednecks LOL!!1!1".

Imagine if the 68 car rule was never changed and there were 68 cars allowed to race at Daytona and Talladega today? Oh god lol
thinking of a 68 cars race at Talladega made my day XD
I still imagine how much more exciting NASCAR would be if only they went back to their car bodies of the 50's and 60's.
Maybe the security in the cockpits wouldn't be the same :/
NASCAR chach' True, but that's my beef with NASCAR. Don't get me wrong, I'm all in favor of making every form of auto racing as safe as possible. It's just that I only have an attention span for vintage NASCAR. (And nothing more recent than 1979.) Not because of the insane amount of risks that drivers took, but simply because the car bodies had much more charm in yesteryear.
I totally understand your point of view even if I find the Gen-6 very beautiful. lol^^
1:58 looks like my local shopping centre, during sale time and someone spots a parking bay.
Same here on Black friday
XD
You just have to love those old newscasts. The announcer and music are so melodramatic. Now, Kenny Mayne just calmly says, "Big pileup on the first lap takes out 37 cars" almost like he would say, "I need to go to the store."
My right ear is lonely.
Kyle Thomas THANK YOU I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE
Same :(
Sounds fine for me but then again I got the most sensitive hearing. i can hear my sister's earbuds when shes in another room and they're plugged in
Same I just layer on my headphones so I thought I broke them bruh
Geez back then you could pick out a car at a scrap yard and if you could get it running and had a brush to paint a number on it you were qualified to race. None of this fancy schmancy corporate sponsorship and other crap like it is today.
Ellie Bellie that tends to be how successful things start. Once it takes hold, there's no going back
Just like what happened in the movie cars
Dinoco's all mine
Haha, get through that McQueen!
I didn't know they had ARCA brakes in the 60's.
NA98Fan What Brakes?
I didnt see any brakes
I think you meant "drivers" instead of "brakes".
Lol

How did they know it was 37 cars that crashed if it was going on while he was talking.
Back in those days they didn't live televise it. They filmed the race and had someone "commentate" over the film a couple days later.
What the other guy said
chargenick1563 so like some TH-camrs do now
So all you've got to do was to dub a race
seems legit
By counting how many cars got back to the line. Pretty simple math....
2019 NASCAR season: no " big pileup" crash
1952 NASCAR season: 37 car pileup
This was 1960, and also the 2019 Daytona July race had a massive 15-20 car pileup (the Daytona 50p also had a big one)
Wow, its like an ARCA crash up in here. You know.... because.... some cars didn't seem to brake.... before they.... crash into others.
So your saying if it were held on the 14th, the cars would've been able to stop before they hit other cars ?
***** But ARCA doesn't exist yet, right ?
Oh. When was this ?
1960
IndyNASCAR 2017 the 1960's
Always reminds me of the crash from the first cars film that chick hicks caused.
It's good to see them getting out and checking everyone else. A real gentlemens sport.
1:58 racing with friends at GTA V be like

Online racing in a nutshell.
Just with almost no damage to cars

This is hilarious to watch them all pile into each other. Imagine broadcasters trying to call this as it happened
I think I counted six separate cars that flipped. I guess if you crash 37 cars, a few are bound to turn over -- but holy cow. That was pure insanity! I'm surprised there weren't any serious injuries.
EDIT: I see in the description now that the six cars flipping was mentioned.
I know I shouldn't be laughing, but this stuff is just so funny
Well nobody died -or was injured.- EDIT, After 3 Thumbs Up: I have since read that 8 were taken to the hospital.
racist
I think you may have posted in the wrong section, or you may have the wrong word.
@@nospacitogaming1794 I think I get the joke lol!

Wow - what a terrible crash! After being in an accident two weeks ago and being saved from serious injury with all the modern saftey equipment, I am truly amazed that all these folks walked away. Amazing video - thanks for sharing!
I’ll never forget this video, it’s so nostalgic
Those cars Were On Arca Brakes.
ARCA wasn't around yet
@@maxwellharris507 this was ARCA
@@gravmelly it wasn't a NASCAR sanctioned race?
@@maxwellharris507 the only 2 races of ARCA back then were daytona and Darlington
You could have avoided this by compensating yer blake fluid an' git yer, git yer... b-brake workin' so you can stop sometimes
Andy Holmio they dont have this advanced tech we have (of course beake fluid did exist but their brakes arent very good since they are old cars)
I wish it was 1960 again
My local shopping centre when there is 1(+) toilet paper rolls= 1:58
nascar in Russia be like
Let me guess Danica caused this wreck. 😂😂😂
She wasnt even born yet
She was not born yet
Danica was born in 1982 and this happened in 1960
NO SHIT GUYS! I ain’t stupid! Ever heard of sarcasm?
Loser drivers

Thanks for posting this video. This my first time I watched so ancient Nascar cars. Real amazing video.
its always nice to see some classic racing from time to time.
I remember pop & I watchin these old school STOCK cars back then. Most unbelievable wreck I ever saw. But it did give me a chance to once again see Glen "fireball" Roberts in action! One of the hero's of my youth, died some 5 days after a fiery wreck with Junior Johnson at the world 600. Rest in peace,ol' son...
GREAT footage!!! I love it! Thanx for posting it.
This video that essentially got me into nascar. I was fascinated watching back in 2009
@Neil Wildeboor The pace car was a 1959 Buick Electra, which was still virtually new in 1960 hence why they used one.
Disney and pixar got inspired by this race to make the movie 🎥 cars🚗
68 car field......No spotters............Love it
Seat belts t-shirts and gasoline. This was quite a look back in time and a nice reminder just how far (and safe) NASCAR has become.
That was some driving back then! 150 mph in those old cars? I saw 40 Ford Coupes in that pileup! Those cars didn't even come with seatbelts in the production models!
Thanks, geek.
This video is wondrously redolent of another era. And the footage is fantastic.
It sure is different than crashes today in Nascar.I think because of the weight and speeds of these cars.
They were much heavier cars and they were going slower, albeit it still fast! The crashes look kind of humorous. Glad to know all survived!
I'm big fan of Nascar Racing, and I'm realy glad that everyone survived this. Amazing crash! :O Thank's for upload. :) I've subscribed, and sorry for my bad English, I'm Serbian.
Thats an amazing video!!!
To see Daytona as it was back then!!
amazing find, thanks for uploading
This shows what roll bars and safety belts and helmets can do! Great job! :) Jack
What a piece of history! 68 cars, twice the number of positions in today's races, started the '60 Daytona 500. Perhaps that's why the pile up. Also, if there were 7500 fans there that day, that was a lot. Thanks for posting.
That was a sportsman race
Nice upload!! The latest edition of Daytona is coming up very soon. Other memorable crashes involve Davey Allison, Geoff Bodine, and of course Dale Earnhardt. RIP Dale
wow this was before templates for the bodies, did you see all the coupes. Awesome video, love the dramatic announcer/narrator and the music puts the bow on it.
its incredible that all the drivers were able to walk away, awesome vid freshgeek89
Daytona was even Daytona back then!! Incredible!! I've never seen this one before, thanks for posting it. And everyone thinks they have Big Ones today...although the one in the 2010 Firecracker (as I will ALWAYS call it) 400 was pretty amazing too!!
What an awesome video - thanks for sharing!
200 mph with no safer barrier, no tall fencing, no HANS devices, no wraparound seats, no full-face helmets... Now THAT'S ballsy racing!
Cars 3 greatest moments
i love the anouncers enthusiasm. they always start yelling and talking really fast in old races.
Just coming back from Taladega this weekend.. seeing this makes me think... holy crap you'd of had to of had some serious balls to race back in the day before all of the protection they have now..
These were basically modified street cars with the back seats removed, front bench bolted to the frame and floor, and rollbars installed, and that was it...They were rigid and not designed to "fall apart" on impact like the newer ones of today, so the driver took a lot of the force...
Great post! Enjoyed this :)
my left ear enjoyed the audio
I didn't think that a large metal car like those racing in the video were capable of going 150+ mph. I would love to have a car like that now so I can take it to the race track. That would be nice!
wow what awesome footage bloody amazing cheeres for the vid
reminds me of that crash in the film Cars lol
Great footage, they were all very lucky indeed to walk away from that one
Man 150 mph That's really fast for back then
I love how the pilots and all the guys are just flipping the cars back over in their t-shirts and there are only a bunch of firefighters. Nowadays you have a whole emergency crew whenever a bumper is scratched!
the announcer credited rollbars, crash helmets, seat belts and lady luck for saving the afternoon.
great footage!
Whoa... this sure deserves to be one of the best NASCAR crashes in the 20th century, but it's also hilarious XD
12 cars rolled in this crash. 24 were done. A couple cars were the 25, Bill Wark, 72a, Bobby Johns, who by the way continued, the 40 is seen prominently, Stan Kross, 95 is Frank Rubritz, 64, Earl Balmer, 18 of Al DeAngelo.
I love how they add the screeching and bang sounds!
I agree 100%. I love watching these old races. I wish they would show them on TV more often.
This reminds me of the Blues Brothers movie "Jake, I got to pull over" ...crashes ensues
Anyone know what the Series is called where they have Stock Cars and they race on Winding tracks?. Almost like F1 tracks?. I have been looking for it FOREVER, i think it was called Nascar but i don't like the Oval racing.
Can you imagine going 150 miles an hour in a basically stock ford fairlane 500? Holy crap talk about having balls of steel. These guys were the pioneers.
@featheredmusic Seat Belts used were commonly old aircraft belts, It was the lack of fire suits etc that were scary, these guys had big balls to run as unprotected as they did.
Haha I love how the cars just keep coming in full speed. Like "Oh shit crash! I better punch the gas!"..
I wonder how much the payout was, Thank you for posting.
Wow just wow. So many cars.
Racing with a guy named "Fireball Roberts" shouldve been a clue that shit was doomed to go bad.
if i was in this crash i be like HOLY SHIT I CANT STOP LOL! and btw great video
This division of NASCAR was known as the Sportsman Division back in 1960. 8 years after this, the series would be renamed the NASCAR Late Model Sportsman Division, and then, in 1982, it finally found sponsorship from Budweiser and the series became the NASCAR Budweiser Late Model Sportsman Division. Then in 1988, it was renamed the Busch Grand National Series, which would become the forerunner to today's Nationwide Series.
Wow Great footage. Love it hehe. So classic. What can i say.
1:57 Cue the tire-screeching sound effects!
Gotta love those old reels.
That was some blues brothers action right there
And i'm glad we've moved beyond the era where a hokey orchestra sets the emotional theme
Imagine 73 ARCA cars at Daytona
Amazing that no one got seriously hurt, considering racing cars (whether NASCAR, IRL, Formula 1, etc.) didn't have the kind of safety features back then that they do now.
This it was the late 60s/early 70s where race organisers/teams found that the cars were made so strong that drivers were getting rattled around inside a stiff shell and were badly injured or killed whilst the car survived. As a result, car design evolved to cars that deform upon impact, the idea being that the energy of the crash is dissipated through the car, not the occupants. This is why after seemingly very slight shunts F1 cars are ruined, but drivers can also walk away from 180mph crashes!
Must have been amazing to watch this back in the day....
Ouch!
How fast were they actually going in those times?
"You just have to love those old newscasts. The announcer and music are so melodramatic." Indeed! Also great is the obviously fake added sound effects of the screeching tires and crash sounds :-p
Watch the guys who were not hurt, crawl out and actually try and help the once that might've been hurt and/or stuck. Pure class! Also amazing noone got killed with the poor brakes and handling they had and probably(not sure on this) no rollcages either.
now we know why there are only 43 today i love how he talks up that "safety" equipment lol
I Love those kinds of videos cause my grandpa race in one of those races
lol great vid, funny how the guy was like 'Roll bar, Helmet, seat belt and lady luck' lol those are some basic safety features compared to what's mandatory today.
This like the huge crash in Cars (2006)
this is good quality for such an old video! 5/5
Lol good to see stuff like this..Such an oddity that all the cars look like belairs..damn those 50's cars.
i feel like the announcer should be saying "oh the humanity!!!". it just seems fitting for the time period
Who ever guessed that diving in a cercul could be dangers, Its not even about the cars anymore, they are all pretty much the same anyway. NASCAR should make an track with left AND RIGHT turns.
For iRacers keeping score, a total of 148 incident points were recorded in this race from 37 4x car contact incidents lol.
Bill France at that point was like "DAMN IT MY CARS!"
