But one thing he was not known as was a Cup champion. 2002 added to the legacy of Martin being one of the best to never win it all. This is the story of Mark Martin’s 2002 season.

    As a Martin fan the one that stung in looking back was 1998. He had an amazing season with 7 wins and would have won it almost any year within a 20 year stretch.....just so happened Gordon had the greatest season in the modern era that year.
    2009 was also tough because he was right there but once again ran into a legendary dynasty.

      Yeah and in 1998 I remember him finishing 2nd to Gordon what seemed like every week. That era of Gordon seemed unstoppable and no one could beat him.

      Yeah that sucked but I'm a Dale Jr fan. Martin just gotten lose and Harvick took advantage and passed him for the win. That finish is way better than the one in 2016.
      I fell asleep until my dad woke me up telling me Dale Jr won the 2014 Daytona 500. I had shredded a tear or two after seeing him coming in second in the 2010, 2012, and 2013 Daytona 500s. Not only those races but after the 2009 Aaron's 499, 2011 Coke 600 (that still haunts me) and 2011 Martinsville Spring Race, and God knows how many races from the span from 2005 to 2014. He only had 3 wins before that 2014 Daytona 500 after his multi-win season in 2004 (should have been a championship season).
      He returned back to championship contender form for only two seasons. His 20 concussions caught up to him and if he had more time. He would have won a cup championship.

      There's a "Missing Ring" and there's just near misses. Elliott in '92,Earnhardt in '95 and Gordon in '96 were just near misses. They weren't injured or had things beyond their control happen. They just finished 2nd. Allison in '92 you can make a case for, since he spent the bulk of that season injured in one way or another, and had to deal with the death of his brother. That's a missing ring. Elliott was just less consistent than Kulwicki down the stretch. That's a near miss.

      Literally all of them _except_ for Logano deserved the title.

    • @jasonstraight1320
      @jasonstraight1320 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TotoDG Would you say the same about Gordon in 2015? He only won one race, the one that punched his ticket into the Champ 4. If he got the title, would he be undeserving? Just checking, because many fans nowadays feel ripped off unless it's their favorite driver. That said, Logano's consistency alone earned him a spot in the Champ 4. He had a higher average finish at the Chase tracks than Kyle Larson did. Funny to think most "experts" predicted Larson would win the title despite his obviously poor performance. You can not like Logano, and be upset that he won, but to say he doesn't deserve it? Come off of it. You gotta perform until the very end, and Logano did that. He won "the damn war."

    • @TotoDG
      @TotoDG 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can’t believe I have to say this in July.
      You argue about Jeff Gordon winning one race, when Kyle Busch, who missed *a full third* of the season, was the winner; I don’t know what that means to you, but that shows to me that the championship system is flawed. The fact that you _have_ to fight _until the very end_ shows exactly *how* flawed it is.
      Under this weird format? Yes, Logano won; just about any other format? Not even close. And I checked, Martin Truex Jr. didn’t win as many races as I thought he did, so he’s eliminated too. Sorry, MTJ. :/
      I’ll admit that I don’t like Joey Logano, but that’s not why this is bad for the sport. What’s bad for the sport is that they’re running under a system that rewards good luck rather than good consistency. I’m okay with a driver winning one race _as well as_ the championship; it happened in 2003. A lot of fans may not have liked how Matt Kenseth beat Ryan Newman, but I think it’s the perfect example of “quality triumphs over quantity.” I don’t like drivers winning the championship *because* of one race.
      I’ll be honest; I don’t like Kyle Busch that much either. But under a normal championship points system, the title was his to lose. It might get boring if a driver locks himself into the championship spot a race or two before the end of the season, but it’s fair on the drivers and the fans that the driver who performs best _all the time_ beats out those who just did it _when they have to._ “When they have to” is a reasonable response for “when do people go to the bathroom?”, not “when does a driver win a championship?”

    • @TotoDG
      @TotoDG 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      TL;DR: Logano won *this* damn war, but no way he’d win *any other* damn war.

    • @jasonstraight1320

      SovietOnion This is where we’ll meet an impasse. Kyle Busch was badly injured at the start of the 2015 season. NASCAR laid out clear expectations to how he can be eligible, and he met those expectations. His car ran in every race too, so his championship is legitimate in my eyes. I’d expect nascar to do the same for any other driver that gets so badly hurt like he did.
      In the end, when does a driver earn the championship? When they earn it, and I’d prefer it be at the final race of the season.

    Without the chase or playoffs the championships would have been more exciting... or so it turns out... Maybe there'd be dull years (but we'd still see great races, a close championship is just icing on the cake) but overall I think it would have been more exciting having a traditional season's long points accumulation. Maybe with a different points structure (with wins and higher placing finishes being weighted comparatively more).

    Man, there are so many Missing Rings episodes you could give to Mark Martin.
    1989: Down only 78 points to Rusty Wallace with one race to go, Martin finishes 30th in the Atlanta Journal 500.
    1990: A 46 point penalty in the second race of the season costs Martin a championship after Dale Earnhardt beats him by 26 points.
    1992: He was the last driver that technically had a chance to win the championship in the Hooters 500. Despite running upfront regularly during the first half of the race, he drops out with engine problems around the halfway point and finishes 32nd.
    1993: Martin wins four races in a row, but early season struggles meant that he never had a chance.
    1997: While in the lead during the Interstate Batteries 500, Martin ran into engine troubles and finished 38th. If his engine had held out for 114 more laps in that one race, he would've beaten Jeff Gordon in the championship by one point.
    1998: Martin has a career year with seven wins, six second place finishes, and nine finishes between 3rd and 5th. He finished in the top five in two-thirds of all races. Unfortunately, Jeff Gordon was having arguably the best season in NASCAR history and wasn't about to let Martin ruin it. Despite Martin's dominance, Gordon was so far ahead that he wrapped up the title with two races to go.
    2004: Down 82 points, Martin couldn't keep up with Kurt Busch or Jimmie Johnson finishing 11th.
    2009: After a few years of part-time driving, Martin replaces Casey Mears in the #5 Hendrick car. He has the points lead with seven races to go, only to watch Jimmie Johnson win back to back races. I was going to say something about how maybe Mark Martin would've won the championship if he wasn't involved in The Big One in the Amp Energy 500 (in which Jimmie Johnson finished 6th) but after analyzing the video, it looked like Martin was running about 18th when it broke out. He probably wouldn't have had enough points to beat Jimmie Johnson even if he hadn't got smacked in the side by Martin Truex, Jr.
    After this, father time caught up with Martin. He never won again and retired after the 2014 season.

  • @Stuffyoucantunwatch

    In 1998, Mark Martin finished 2nd to Gordon at Indy, Pocano and Watkins Glen. Had Martin won these races and Gordon have trouble in them, Martin wins 10 races, tied with Gordon but he wins the championship instead. If he wins at those three races and holds on at Michigan, Martin wins 5 straight races wuth a win the following week at Bristol which would've given him 11 wins to Gordon's 9. I don't believe Gordon had a single mechanical failure that while year. Which is unheared of.

    Probably the best driver to never win it all? I think so. Probably better than 75% of the drivers who did win it all? I think so. I remember reading that Mr. Consistancy got more airtime than any other on the track multiple seasons because he ran up front so much. That will make a car owner and the sponsors very happy. What also makes a car owner happy is getting your car back in one piece as often as Mark did. So, from a business standpoint, is Martin top 10 all time. I absolutely think so.

If anything, Kyle deserves a “Missing Rings” episode the most because he arguably ran the best all season but didn’t do great at Homestead and lost everything.

      Newman's season was underrated because he didn't win nor have many laps led. He had the 5th best average finish (better than actual champ Harvick) and if they used the old points system pre-chase he'd have finished 6th in points. Him making the final 4 wasn't unreasonable with this in mind. Hamlin's season (even disregarding the missing race) was worse and he made final 4.

    As Buffalo Bills fan since the late 80's and being a Martin fan, I seem to like great teams that lose to the greatest teams ever. Had Martin won at Dover and lead the most laps and then finish in the top 5 at Talledega, Martin wins the Championship comfortably. With over 4,900 points to Stewart's 4800. In '98 if Gordon doesn't have that season and only wins 10 races again while Martin wins at least 8 races, the extra win coming at Indy where he finished 2nd to Gordon, Martin would've won that Championship. If he had that season in any year prior to '98, he wins a championship.

    I know what the problem was in 2002. It was his team mates sucked. As much as I like Greg, Kurt and Matt they always sucked when it came to Mark. Mark always gave for the teams and the teams were always eager to take and not return. Just look at the Coke 600 in this video, lots of racing to go yet and who is all over Mark, the 17. Teammates either pass or fall in line. Not burn up their stuff fighting a team mate half way through the race.
    Even the last race where every point counted. Greg was bragging in the post race interview how great and fun it was to race Mark "hard as I could". The man is running for a championship and Greg is having fun. I'm not saying roll over even though Hendrick folks would do it in a heartbeat but at least give Mark the same respect he would have gave you and either stay in front of him or let him go by.

Mark finished 4th and may have challenged his other team mate Kurt for the win without burning up his stuff racing (idiot of the day) Biff and to be honest for all Mark did for Roush and all of the drivers there at the time like bringing them to Roush in the first place imho they should have cleared a path for him to win.
