Schrader did talk to the winner of that Daytona 500 race, Michael Waltrip. Waltrip asked him about Dale. All Schrader said was it's not good. Mikey didn't get to celebrate the win that Dale, Sr had predicted he would have that day.
Schrader has NEVER spoken publicly about what he saw and I personally don't believe he ever will. He is a dignified man and would never disrespect Dale's family like that
I was working on the #36 M&M's car at the time. The Simpson belts that everyone used had a metal piece to pre-tension the belts. The piece was always in front of the seat above the drivers shoulders. Earnhardt's belt's were installed how Dale wanted them to be installed, with the metal piece behind the seat. When he was thrown forward in the crash, the metal piece caught on his seat and tore exactly at the metal piece. Nascar didn't dare tell the fans that Earnhardt had done it to himself. However, they made sure every car had the belts installed properly the next race. Simpson's complaints were justified. Nascar did what Nascar does. Make a bad situation much worse.
The only people Kenny has ever told what he saw that day was Dale's family, and the is the way it will always be. Kenny Schrader is an honorable and humble friend of the Earnhardt family, so if you ever see a video saying Schrader tells what he saw that day, IT IS A LIE!!!
I knew it was a good idea to read the comments first. I truly didn't think ANYONE could drag that out of Kenny Schrader. Glad to see I was right. Sad to see a content creator this dishonest. Thank you for letting everyone know!!
@@tjwhite6429 Couldn't have said it better myself. I agree with you 100%. It's disgusting how some youtuber's will stoop to such lows, especially when it involves a death, where they lie in a video title to try to sucker viewers in.
I was there in the top row of the Oldfield section that day. Being a nurse, my observation of the accident, Ken’s body language and the absence of Dale climbing out of his car said it was not just serious but fatal. I knew he was in serious trouble. I knew he was dead, then the blue tarp came out and it was over. I still can see that accident in a replay over and over again.
Me and my girl were up there all week. Watched some dirt races at Volusia and some pavement races at New Smyrna then went and watched the Twins at Daytona. Went home and had a big ass steak dinner watching the race on Sunday. Could not believe the wreck killed him. Never did eat that steak that day. Was a dirt racer back then and drove as hard as I ever drove trying to win it for DALE. He was a incredible inspiration for all of us stockcar drivers. Sure miss him. Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.
Back in the day I was a huge NASCAR fan (Davey Alison, Bill Elliott) I was watching the race live. I didn't like Earnhardt at all - but I was heartbroken when he was killed.
Im glad I saw this. Cuz I felt the same way. Dale was always my Kyle Busch or Jimmie Johnson. I always cheered for him to get beat cuz he was the guy that seemed to win every week. I watched it live and cuz one of my guys didnt win that day I turned it off right after the checkered flag. Didnt hear about Dale till the next day. I was extremely surprised and unexpectedly sad that the guy I cheered against was gone. It didnt seem real
Earnhardt hit a concrete wall almost straight on and it killed him. This Prompted NASCR to start installing safer barriers. An Idea that Smokey Yunick Presented to NASAR in the early 1960's . Better late than never I suppose.
I remember this well. A couple of guys at work used to do a betting pool on the races. I had picked Michael Waltrip to win and my boss said, "The only way Waltrip will win is if Dale is dead!" He chuckled but Waltrip ended up winning that race because of...well...we didn't chit chat a lot that day at work.
@@danielnaumann1692 Yes that is likely true. I just meant it was a statement that sounded prophetic , it made me think of Waylen Jennings saying to Buddy Holly "I hope your plane crashes"
I was watching that race on tv. When the crash occurred and I saw how he hit the wall , I was sickened. I knew he died in that mess. My heart broke for his son. That was a horrible day.
I was watching it too. However, the impact did not look bad at all. Not sure how you would have assumed death just from the crash itself, however after the cars came to a stop the reaction of everyone around the car was a different story.
It’s always the wrecks that look pedestrian that are most fatal. The guy’s luck just ran out. He’d climbed out of a lot of wild collisions. When that wreck happened I didn’t think anything of it. That was a terrible event. That year had some things go down NONE of us will ever forget. Already an entire generation has come of age, born after 2001. Crazy.
The day Dale Earnhardt day, I quit watching racing. NASCAR'S best driver died doing what he loved and no one could hold a candle to him. 2001 was one of the worst years of my life, so far. RIP Mr. Earnhardt 😢❤🎉

I never understood the appeal of rednecks, making just left hand turns, just chasing each other…sure, there’s always the possibility of a fiery wreck, but at the price of three hours of watching them go around in circles…
Either the seatbelt broke, or the seat broke, causing Dale’s death. I’ve sat in one of his race cars (a Dover backup car) in the late 90’s, and as far away from the steering wheel as Dale sat, SOMETHING broke. He sat almost layed back in the seat, with his arms fully extended to hold the steering wheel when he drove. I do think the HANS device would have saved him, but Dale was old school, and there’s no way he would have worn a full face helmet with it attached.
That absolutely never happened. You both are either lying or misremembering. He did not even have an in-car camera that day. He had a roof cam and rear bumper cam, but nothing inside the car. This is well before the days that NASCAR started putting cameras inside every car, and even nowadays, the broadcast only has access to a select few every race. But again, there was absolutely no cameras inside the 3 car when he crashed and died.

When Schrader took one look, and walked away shaking his head, you knew it was bad. Schrader could see that Earhart's lower jaw had been ripped clean off.
IMHO the design of the car killed him. Nascar could not have that come out so go after simpson with it, and IIRC Simpson sued nascar to clear their name.
You are not wrong. If you ever watch an IndyCar Formula One race during the crashes, see piece of the cargo flying everywhere. That’s good. That means energy is being dissipated because energy can’t be destroyed. It has to go somewhere and unfortunately, in Dale’s case, it went through the car and into him if the car was designed to dissipate energy, I don’t know if he would’ve lived through it, but his chances would’ve been greatly improved.
Dale Sr. Was the greatest driver. There were other greats like Petty, Walthup, JJ, and the list goes on. I will remember Dale Sr. for the rest of my life. I always hoped Jr. Would fill his boots but just never quite did. He was good but not the INTIMIDATOR. #3 will remain forever eched in my soul.

I know you can’t do the autopsy results because they’ve been rescinded but really his head was just laid down small abrasion on his face there was nothing really visible.
I've thought of him as just a scumbag who happily risked other drivers' lives pushing them into the walls or into the grass and who for reasons unknown was never disciplined for things that would have gotten other drivers racing licenses suspended. Not worth grieving over.
