I remember Jalen Rose talking about his performance in the Utah-OKC series he said " You can't really stop Ricky Rubio because his strength is distribution not scoring he's not someone who will drop a ton of points to beat you but will get his teammates involved throughout the whole game" that's a very accurate description of his game IMO

Love breaking his hand before the 2012 even began and Pekovic in and out of the lineup because of bone spurs. That being said, they could probably have made the post season... but they were an abysmall defensive team.

Man, I always smile whenever there's a Ricky Rubio video knowing that he's somehow appreciated. This man, truly my inspiration on how I like to play basketball. The IQ, gameplay and as a team player. Always picking him on my draft whenever I customize my own team.
I'm not saying he would even turn into a perennial all-star but that first ACL injury definetly changed his career. Go back and look at his games before that injury and he just had a better first step and was quicker in general. He was able to get to his spots much easier then after it. And still he turned out to be a quality starter and somebody I would gladly have on my team.
Rubio was from the Isle of Misfit Basketball Players. Imagine the PERFECT PG in terms of running an offense as well as defending. He has great size at 6-4, is mentally mature, has a fantastic engine and a wonderful 1st step. On top of that he plays with flair. He's just exciting to watch when he has the ball in his hands. Watching him with the ball is like listening to jazz music. He never does the same thing twice, plays by instinct and at least twice a game will make a dribble or pass that will get the fans out of their seat. He's exciting and fun to watch. He should be an all-time great. He just has one problem: he can't shoot. At all. Teams sit back on him and gum up the paint when he has the ball just daring him to take an outside shot. Defenses don't play honest in half court sets because this absolutely wonderful PG will never beat them by takeing any shot outaide of 10 feet. That's Rubio in a nutshell.
If anyone played fantasy, teams that were punting FG and TOs know how valuable he was especially when he was available during later rounds. Also, wish that he didn't go down with the ACL injury from last season. He was having a career renaissance with the developing Cavs
I will never forget Rubio was called the Spanish Pistol Pete. If he didn’t have any serious injuries, he would have been one of the great point guards.
Great vídeo, but you missed a very important fact that has been prior to RR performance during the last few seasons. He had to fight against negative emotions after his mother’s death. Once he got over it, he actívely participated in the fight against mental illnesses, particularly athletes sphere.
Still turned out to be a very good, reliable PG with a really great personality. Despite not fully meeting expectations, he didn't let all the previous hype get to him unlike other touted rookies who fell off the league. He accepted his role and contributed. Will always appreciate his time with the Suns, he was part of the magical bubble run. Two major factors that held him back is the injuries early in his career and his consistency in creating his own shot. He did improve his shooting though
As a wolves die hard, I can easily say Ricky is definitely one of my favorite players to ever wear a Timberwolves jersey. I’ve always preferred players who could facilitate rather than scoring and Rubio was absolutely insane in that aspect.
Every once in a while Ricky has a game with 30+ on good shooting, a bunch of assists and rebounds. I'm confident that, if he never gets injured, he'd be capable of doing that every other game and he's a star

One of the most underrated PG of the last decade. The lack of defense of this NBA makes him seem worst than the titanic player he is. That's why he's been one of the most value players on FIBA basket and the MVP of the last world cup. The last one of a whole PG species.
Honestly. If he was in the league 15 years…what was supposed to happen, happened. 🤷🏽♂️ The man got that elusive NBA Career. The one a million little boys dream about. He made it and made it big enough to last 15 years. 👍🏾
It is true that I could be a bit biased as I am from Spain but at the same time I watched plenty of basketball during my life and I haven’t seen too many players like Rubio with regards to playmaking. That is his strong point. It is true that he is not a proficient scorer but he facilitates the game to his teammates a lot. Basketball is a team sport and roles like his are not only very needed but scarce. Not everybody can be MJ or KB, there are other ways to add value to give their teams options to win such as playmaking and that is what really Ricky excels on.
Couldn't shoot and never learned to finish. And was 6'2" not 6'4" He's honestly one of the most perplexing careers I can remember. He's an 84% FT shooter. He clearly has good touch. I've never heard concerns that he doesn't work hard or has a bad attitude. And yet he somehow never developed a reliable jump shot, in-between game or finishing package. It's truly bizarre.
Some people just can’t shoot at an elite level. He was a traditional point guard and one of the reasons he had a NBA career in the NBA was because of his elite defense and playmaking.

@@tj5180 Sure but that's usually how it works for lottery picks. You don't usually get to go to a good team. Although the one year they were really bad (16 wins) he only played 22 games. But Jonny Flynn was in the same teams (and out of the league by 23) and even he was 54%. TJ McConnell played on the 10 win 76ets and was 58% as a rookie (62% career) So, sure, if he were playing 20 minutes on good teams against backups instead of 30 minutes as a starter I'm sure his finishing would look better. But that's not really a better outcome
I remember watching him in the FIBAs for the first time and wished that he would play in the NBA someday because he is so fun to watch and become one of the upcoming great PGs. Sadly it didn't turn out that way, you'd see highlight plays but its not consistent. Was hoping to see his real potential when plays with the best in the world

Ricky Rubio has simply never become a consistent, NBA-caliber shooter. Period. It's weakened his game and weakened his career. He's likely the worst shooter in the league who's gotten consistent minutes over multiple seasons. Without his other skill sets, he simply wouldn't have made or stayed in the league.
The league changed in ways that his skillset and body type were unable to adapt to. That's the truth, the old heads retired and the math heads moved in. Shoot threes or layups and be bigger than the other guy, that's the formula because it works and guys like Rubio just don't have a job anymore. It's sad, like it was always tough to make the league as a little guy, now I'm convinced it's impossible. There will be no more AI, Nate's or Spuds for the foreseeable future.
The NBA doesn't want to see the pass first anymore, gone are days of Stockton , Nash, Kidd, J.Will and CP3, the NBA wants to see a scoring point guard and Centers who taking 3pt shots
I watched Rubio for most of his career and here are a couple of things I saw the past decade. 1. He never developed basic NBA shots for PGs. He would blow a lot of layups or get blocked pretty easily. He also didn't have any sort of tear drop/floater and looked awkward around the rim. I personally think that if he developed his inside game he would have been a real threat because of crafty and quick he was. Rubio could always get into the paint with ease. But as soon as he was in there, you'd mostly see him pass it out or settle for a mid range, which he never really consistently hit. He became very predictable and wasn't on par with other starting guards. 2. His situation with Minnesota was just terrible. I loathe Minnesota for how terrible they are not just as a club but more so how bad they are at developing talent. They have had a plethora of talent come and go and non of them could get any sort of success playing for them. But as soon as they would leave... they would have better careers for other teams. Kevin Love, Garnett and Wiggins all became champions as soon as they left Minnesota. Rubio who hasn't sniffed the post season ever went straight to the playoffs with a Utah team that was suppose to be tanking that season. Zach Lavine became one of the better SGs in the league. The history of Minnesota suggets that most of the players they draft, aren't actually bad... they're just not getting them into positions to be succesful. Rubio made strides after playing for his National team more so than Minnesota. 3. Rubio was never a starter in my eyes. The best basketball he played for me was last season as a rotational piece playing starters minutes, ala Manu Ginobilli. His true greatness is getting everyone invloved and that would benefit the second unit more than the first unit. He was also a good 3rd guard in a 3 guard lineup. I've watched him play along side Mitchell, Garland and Booker and all of them benefited from his game. Not just because of his passing and getting his team organized, but more so his leadership. Those guys started hitting their strides in terms of winning when Rubio entered the building. That's not just a coincidence. 4. Injuruies obviously hindered his career. Love the Rubio bounce back stories but as a big fan of his, I kinda felt cheated by the basketball gods. I always wonder where he'd be at if he hadn't torn his acl... hadn't rolled his ankle... Love not breaking his hand during the 2012 season... not re-tearing his ACL after an incredible run last year. Could have been a better story, but I digress. I honestly think Rubio's days are numbered. Returning from injury, he hasn't looked anywhere near the player he was a year ago.. which is obviously undertandbale given the severity of his injury and the balance of this new cavs roster. But with his age, and the Cavs direction, I don't know whether Rubio will still be in the league for very long. Loved watching him play though. I would watch him win or lose.
In my personal observation, for every athlete going into the nba that has had the Lebron James level of hype and lived up to expectations, there have been ten that haven't.
Rubio was supposed to be the next Ben Simmons/Steph Curry/Hassan Whiteside. Him tearing his neck muscles ruined his career. Sad to see happen to a future top 5 player of all time before the injuries

He didn't live up to his hype but he was and still is a pretty good NBA PG. They never appreciated him here like they should of,other then KG they are never happy with their players here.
Good video. You can do Ron Harper, was a huge prospect and very smart player, comparable to MJ but injuries left hi outside his potential. He was hugely underestimated when playing with the bulls, but he was the brain behind the Bulls Triangle offense. Those bulls from the 2nd 3-peat were a different team with Ron in the bench.
Rubio had an incredible career. For Spain. Hes NBA career will be a tiny side note among hes accolades. Dude will be remembered much longer than many players who get 100 million+ contracts.
If Rubio became a star, Luka would have been considered more highly and would have gone first in the draft. Like how Dirk becoming a star made people think Darco was the next Dirk so he got picked 2nd, success or failiurs of early European players had a lasting effects.
Rubio always been one of my favorite players. Living in PR at the time international ball was more prevalent Ricky was elite in Fiba tournaments. As a Cavs fan hope they can win it all while he’s on the roster

Rubio's main problem has always been his shooting. He is a great passer and play maker, and knows how to run an offense, but he just isn't too good of a shooter EDIT---and yes, I posted this comment before watching the video, so I wasn't being redundant on the shooting part
What happened in one sentence: He tore his acl early, robbing athleticism and couldn’t shoot. Still would have been an all star had he never torn his acl.

I loved him in Phoenix. He really helped that young core improve. People forget how important he was before Paul arrived.

He scored 38 points against usa in a world cup and he has got the record of Three points in a game in Cleveland
He out played Russel Westbrook then got injured in the second round letting his team down. Great chemistry player his future is coming off the bench.

But as soon as he was in there, you'd mostly see him pass it out or settle for a mid range, which he never really consistently hit. He became very predictable and wasn't on par with other starting guards.
2. His situation with Minnesota was just terrible. I loathe Minnesota for how terrible they are not just as a club but more so how bad they are at developing talent. They have had a plethora of talent come and go and non of them could get any sort of success playing for them. But as soon as they would leave... they would have better careers for other teams. Kevin Love, Garnett and Wiggins all became champions as soon as they left Minnesota. Rubio who hasn't sniffed the post season ever went straight to the playoffs with a Utah team that was suppose to be tanking that season. Zach Lavine became one of the better SGs in the league. The history of Minnesota suggets that most of the players they draft, aren't actually bad... they're just not getting them into positions to be succesful. Rubio made strides after playing for his National team more so than Minnesota.
3. Rubio was never a starter in my eyes. The best basketball he played for me was last season as a rotational piece playing starters minutes, ala Manu Ginobilli. His true greatness is getting everyone invloved and that would benefit the second unit more than the first unit. He was also a good 3rd guard in a 3 guard lineup. I've watched him play along side Mitchell, Garland and Booker and all of them benefited from his game. Not just because of his passing and getting his team organized, but more so his leadership. Those guys started hitting their strides in terms of winning when Rubio entered the building. That's not just a coincidence.
4. Injuruies obviously hindered his career. Love the Rubio bounce back stories but as a big fan of his, I kinda felt cheated by the basketball gods. I always wonder where he'd be at if he hadn't torn his acl... hadn't rolled his ankle... Love not breaking his hand during the 2012 season... not re-tearing his ACL after an incredible run last year. Could have been a better story, but I digress.
I honestly think Rubio's days are numbered. Returning from injury, he hasn't looked anywhere near the player he was a year ago.. which is obviously undertandbale given the severity of his injury and the balance of this new cavs roster. But with his age, and the Cavs direction, I don't know whether Rubio will still be in the league for very long. Loved watching him play though. I would watch him win or lose.

In my personal observation, for every athlete going into the nba that has had the Lebron James level of hype and lived up to expectations, there have been ten that haven't.
Rubio was supposed to be the next Ben Simmons/Steph Curry/Hassan Whiteside. Him tearing his neck muscles ruined his career. Sad to see happen to a future top 5 player of all time before the injuries

He was hugely underestimated when playing with the bulls, but he was the brain behind the Bulls Triangle offense. Those bulls from the 2nd 3-peat were a different team with Ron in the bench.

Rubio's main problem has always been his shooting. He is a great passer and play maker, and knows how to run an offense, but he just isn't too good of a shooter
