Navigating DIY Truck Camper Challenges 3,000 Miles From Home

- The homemade “garage” has certainly been taking a toll on the scrapyard travel truck, and after hearing one professional’s quick opinion on it, I thought she was a goner. You guys know that I love a good DIY build and I was having a hard time coming to terms with the idea of a manufactured truck camper. Thankfully, we made a huge discovery over the weekend! It appears the frame isn’t actually that bent at all. A rusted crossmember under the rear of the bed seems to be causing the garage to tilt backwards (not the frame)! I believe we can save her!

When you make it to Alaska hit me up! We have our own camper and Off road toys and would love to meet up have dinner and show you some amazing hidden local areas to camp, see and do!! ❤❤❤ love your content and hope you make it up here! Especially in the spring and summer you would not wanna leave!
Dude I REALLY hope you can reinforce the scrap yard truck. Fix the crossmember and beef up the frame a bit. I get attached to the vehicles I love so I really hope you can make this one work. Keep it up!
Go to an OFFROAD specific fabrication/ welding shop where they actually have an understanding of frames and beefing them up. Don't settle for some random shop that just says they can do it.
100%. The frame is reinforcable. It's not going to be cheap, but it is doable.
So happy about the good news!!!!
You could add a brush guard to the front bumper and some anchor points to the top of the garage. Use ratchet straps or bars to pull the top of the garage forward toward the cab.
Might look a little wonky, but it may take some of your rear frame distortion away. That, with the crossmember, may keep you going indefinitely.
An "exoskeleton", if you will.
Maybe pull a small utility/overland trailer?
I’m glad you came to your conclusion to send it! Been watching your vids since the build bro, I live in San Diego and happy you made it out here. Don’t listen to these people, you’re already here! Try to save the salvage rig that’s been with you through thick and thin and do her the service of riding her till the wheels fall off. You already gave her a fulfilling second run. Wishing you all the positive vibes 🤙🏽
the only problem with jacking it up that far back is the bed supports don’t go that far back, in order to get what the jack did you would have to extend support to rear most of the garage
Good question. I don't know the answer. But safety is first priority if you ask me.
Stay in it and win it , homesteaders and adventurers have repaired things forever! Stay strong!
Reinforce the frame get rid of the factory bed and mount the garage straight to the frame so it moves up towards the cab and the weight its carrying is just the garage
Or replace the bed with a flat top and put it on top of there. That would also move it up and give some more rigidity. I think best case he should get a full size truck crew cab. More space more power more capabilities.
yes scrapyardtruck deserve the journey! good decision!
Could you attach a tow receiver to the front of the Taco and then get one of those racks for a motorcycle and at least keep the bike with you and at the same time, transfer its weight to the front?
This is a great idea
@@marshallstipes9125 thanks, I hope he sees it 😊
Or even get a small 8ft×5.5gt trailer and modify it to sit the camper on top, can also get a tonneau cover for the bed to add a storage place to take some weight off the trailer. Or even get a small overland trailer and scale down the camper for maybe just the dirt bike, bike, storage.
Glad you’re staying the course. I was in the minority when I voted, but hoping you kept going!
Holy shit that bed is about to snap right off.
ya u can see it lol
A camper shell and a bike hitch hauler works. NEVER get rid of the bike :>) It's a safety thing (wink wink)
Yea,🎉 keep on exploring and having fun. Alaska or Bust . Keep on going.
I found an idea to save the trip with the dirtbike.... while lighting the load off the back!!! Put a rack on the front of the truck to park the bike on across the front of the truck now you have room in the back and lighting up the back of the truck!
Amazing! I'm so glad you've got some better information about what's going on.
Definitely want you to be safe on your travels ❤️
Always sending prayers your way 🙏🏻❣️
You made that last video private right as i was in the middle! What the heck hahaha
That's fantastic news!! I hope your journey continues smoother on out from here! Thanks for the moments of calm and scenery, I miss the beach ❤ enjoy and be safe!
Keep on Trucking.
Jake, you may want to reconsider swapping out your truck, the ALCAN is not an easy ride. You could end up in worse shape in the middle of nowhere. Good luck!
Oh heck no! Don't give up! It'll be fine!
KEEEP HERR GOING ❗️🥳
Keep on going man. I’m from WA and there’s so many amazing places to see here 🤘🏻
I like the new editing technique. Atleast I think it’s new lol
Bad ass bro, glad you are doing what you wanna do. Have fun dude!
Dude I used to watch your e90 videos back in the day, so cool to see you having success making camping/outdoor videos now!
Always smart to get a second opinion! On to Alaska!
Upside, it makes for some great content!
I'm happy for you man. This is flippin awesome. Makes me wanna do this with my f150
On for the ride no matter what🙌🏾love the journey so far
#ScrapyardTruck
Love the new hat!!!
New subscriber here, just watched all your videos and ended with this newest one right in my backyard! Hope you enjoyed San Diego despite the bad news with the truck. I think the best and the safest route would be to start over with a new build 👍🏽 Either way we’ll still be watching.
I think a lot of Doomers commenting have missed the entire point of Salvage to Scenic. It’s a challenge to see if a salvaged vehicle can have a second lease of life and once the journey is over then return it to the scrapyard.
If it was me, and I know it’s not, I’d reinforce the chassis and continue on. The ‘go home and get a new truck’ brigade seem to give up at any inconvenience
Glad to know that the situation might not be as bad as you thought. However, now's a good time to go reinforce your frame, and probably consider shifting some weight off of the bed and maybe elsewhere. Consider a roof rack next?
You may also ask someone about adding tie rods / tie bars between the cab and the garage to provide reinforcement and security. You'd need to drill through the cab and seal it up, but worth asking about.
When you have put so much blood, sweat, and tears into your Build, it's hard to go a different way. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. I worry that you're still at a high risk of something going wrong with all that weight in a small truck.
¾ ton at least if not a 1 ton would suit you better!
Your drive is inspirational. Going for your dream and goals the best way you can. Be safe!
Put a motorcycle rack on the front of the truck! Put the heavy shit in the cab, water, refrigerator, other stuff, and then sleep in the back.
Exciting stuff!
I'm no engineer or mechanic, but can't you just get rid of the truck bed and put on a flatbed or somehow weld the taco to the truck? The whole bed just seems to be dead weight. I know something will work out great for you, Jake. Can't wait for an update.
A solution needs to happen with the framework. It will only get worse. I know it would suck to do but to head home and build out a rig that can go anywhere and do anything would be a big peace of mind, just my opinion. Great series.
Never ever give up the dirt bike!
So crazy seeing all those palm trees😂
That’s why I’m excited about the new Tacoma’s fully boxed frame
Dude, I thought it was only slightly bent but then i saw that part at the end when they removed the support thingy that had lifted back into position and DAAAAAYUUUMM, how hasn’t snapped in half already? I hope you get it fixed so that truck can accompany you all the way to Alaska
I don’t know if you will see this but if you do please reply you have an amazing and awesome build and I hope it all goes well for you, you a great inspiration and you made me want to do this in the future, you a awesome person and creator keep keeping us posted on your awesome journey (maybe put this in the next video if you want to) I wish you luck
I'm a firm believer that if you replace that cross member and box your frame from cab back you'll be ok. Take it to a shop that can properly weld. The good thing is those trucks are everywhere here in California, so finding a non rusted out cross member shouldn't be a problem. But I do agree, it needs to be dealt with. Roads in Alaska are pretty harsh. The "haul" road that goes from Fairbanks to prudhoe is very gnarly. It's actually advised to carry two spares. The road is have gravel, and have paved. And believe me, you'll pray for the gravel sections, cause the paved sections are shit. Good luck with whatever you decide. I'd love to see you complete your adventure with the garage. Maybe put some weight up front to balance the weight in the back as well.
Your videos are amazing and the scenery is stunning 🤩 stay safe.
❤Yaman excellent video! 234K Subs too wow that was fast! Thank YOU for no longer sayjng "I love you" at end of your videos! People are so fake when they say that on YT and cliche too yo! I agree you APPRECIATE us! Hey think about it you built a home for your bike and not for yourself man!? That weird, throw it out and move in back there. Get up to Alaska summer be comin yo!
Wow my dude.!! You literally stayed at my old stomping grounds in Mission Beach. 🙌🏽🩵 love it.!! I’m now living next to Holbrook, Arizona. If you’re ever out this way. Swing by my spot.!! Your editing is inspiring me. ☺️👌🏼
While reading the comments on your short, I was a surprised and a bit disappointed to see how many suggested you head back home for a new build. The Scrapyard Taco is such a great example of “do more with less”. I wholeheartedly believe in that mindset and want to live more like that everyday and instill that in my children. Like you said, you are 3,000 miles away from home and have had such an incredible journey so far. Adapt and overcome! Love what you are doing and really hope you stick with the Tacoma until you really feel pulled towards something else. Live in the moment and take it for all its worth! Good luck with whatever direction you head!
love how you saved the crossmember for last... hope you make it to wherever your heart desires Jake
Great news! Hope it works out man. I think if you’re able to solve the issue, you should stay traveling.
Came across a video of yours awhile ago and I loved your energy and subbed! Glad I did, I watch your videos at night before bed and they really just help me feel grounded and happy!
Thank you for joining the adventure! 😁
If you caught it earlier on before the bending started I would have told you to shift the weight to the front more and more evenly distribute the weight. You could move the storage over the top and more of the living in the back as it wouldn’t be a constant uneven distribution
Hey man, I really hope you're right about the frame not being bent, but if you're planning to do a lot of off-roading, you should do some serious reinforcement.
Sell your dirtbike take that money to get what you need to continue your journey. Best wishes!
HUGE DISCOVERY!!!! BRUH LET US KNOW IF IT WAS THE CROSS MEMBER!!! 🤯
High hopes for you bro - necessity is the mother of invention - love the west coast - love the upper northwest - wanna see you make it all the way to Alaska !!!
HI!!! Remember me? Ive been gone for a bit but now im back. I love ur vids. I wouldnt expect less. keep up the work. Im in the process of getting my own truck. The camper looks great!
Yeah that is a tough situation. Hopefully it all works out.
Good luck with the truck. Go with your gut feeling. You look so happy on your travels. Love the videos. Drive safe. God bless
Remember if you head up to Alaska there is lots a remoteness. Plus in Alaska if something goes wrong with your truck the cost of repairs will be double or more. May have to wait for parts. I’m sure you follow truck house life.
nice video!
Don’t go home! You and the rig can totally make it through this trip! Hope everything works out and can’t wait to see what comes next!
Pull the bed off. Cut the frame between the rear axel and where it's bent. Then extend it, as well as reinforcing it, then put it all back together. Then you'll have a longer wheelbase, so you can put the weight more evenly over the rear axel instead of hanging off the back. You could also put a flat bed on it instead of a truck bed. Just build that out like you built the current box.
Lfg the truck lives!!
Great video this week
Fix the truck and keep going man!!! You'll make it with the fix and maybe some reinforcement.
Happy to hear some positive news on the truck. If it's only that cross member, I'd say have an upgrade on the garage and as well stronger shocks on the rear to add more shock resistance (maybe a V shape if possible).
I'd not wanna see the bike go, it's the Tacoma's baby brother ❤
Get the truck camper set up with a dirt bike holder on the hitch!
That guy is wrong. It very well can be fixed and can be made stronger than it was. Don’t sell your stuff just because that guy didn’t want to do it. That is very much the case, he didn’t want to do it. take it somewhere else. Find a welder that is side hustling right now because he’s off from pipeline. Frame repairs is a thing for semi’s. No reason it cant be done on a pickup. If you were in texas id say bring it by.
It can be done man! Dont give up on it
That's Fantastic 🎉🎉🎉
let it ride brother!
Great news! I bet you can get that fixed underneath! Then maybe shift the weight to the front by putting the bike on the front or get a trailer to haul the bike? Hope you make it to Alaska for summer! Thanks for sharing beautiful southern California! Love it! You can always find good food at Trader Joe’s- no shame in that! We’re not here to see your cooking show, just all your adventures! Be safe and have fun! Hope this fixes your truck so you don’t have to start over!
Ur making the right decision.....wasn't aware of the resources u had ....just trying to think of the safest bet for u ...be safe man
Better dealt with in San Diego than the trails in the Rocky Mountains.
Get a full size truck! Youll have way more room, more power. Just all around more capabilities. Yea itll be more on gas BUT knowing what you know now, you can modify the heater so you wont have altitude problems.
Could you not remove the back window reinforce the back of the cab and bolt your garage to the cab aswell as reinforce the frame
Sell the dirt bike get the go fast camper!! The bike is badass and all but how often do you really get to ride it? Maybe put it in a storage unit or ship it home
he rides it pretty often in his vids
Build a flatbed to hold the camper. Leave off bumper etc. Light al surface on steel frame.
If you can have somebody put a lot of reinforcement into that frame it would be just fine… the problem might be in trying to correct the bent frame
Frame isn't bent! It is the bed mount :)
I'd seriously reinforce the frame, I.e. welding a double thick plate to the side of the entire rear of it, before anything else happens,
Send it. Keep going. My wife and I have been on the road for a year. RV pulling a Ranger with a dirtbike and dualsport bike in back. We are just up the road from you in Cloverdale CA in the wine country, so freaking beautiful here. Even though we are from the PNW and headed back towards WA (kids there to see and we love the summers there) I'm finding a new found love for Cali. Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada's are amazing, SD is cool, north and south of SF is awesome (Hollister/Morgan Hill) Such a huge interesting state.
that’s pretty event news. hopefully it resolves the issue. Would a 4x4 specialist be able to shed more light?! Either way. It’s a step forward 🎉
Put some roof rails on the truck itself and put some stuff up there, strongest part of the truck and tons of unused space right now and would also move that other solar panel forward in some way will help get the weight over the wheels more
Dude where’d you get those boots
Welcome to SoCal brotha 🤙🏼
Don’t forget to hit Vancouver Island in BC! Gotta come explore out here!
Nice
Why not put a hitch system on the front for the dirt bike?
bro i got the same phonecase as you lol
Juanita's taco shop in leucadia is a must. Best chicken tacos in San Diego!! Timmy C Arizona
Cool
Hope you can find a solution to it bro, if not a new build wouldn't be bad to watch either IMO. So short reels for Instagram and Tiktok and longform builds on here.
Keep it up!
You should link up with @truckhouselife in Alaska! That would be an epic video I feel like!
Might be kind of jank, but you could see if you could find a truck bed trailer, with roughly the same dimensions as your Tacoma bed, then tow the garage behind you, it would limit your off road ability but would allow you to carry on with the garage and keep the truck, I’ve seen those as cheap as a few hundred dollars
Keep grinding brotha fix the TACOMA push forward with the trip just realize there’s an issue and deal with it
I stayed in mission bay San Diego before it’s amazing!
