      Its not just lyrics, its also the music, atmosphere, etc. Like an above user Anthony R mentioned... they incorporated the Fibonacci sequence into their song.. which literally creates a spiral.

      That part is my favorite too. Plus listen to the drums and bass during that part, the polyrhythms. The drums are playing in 1 time signature on the high hats and a different one on snare and kick. and by the end it comes around back together

      I think the lyrics in this song sound almost like a love letter to the band from Maynard.
      I imagine what he does when he gets a new instrumental track in the mail: he changes into a fluffy bathrobe and grabs a bottle of wine, then listens to what those three guys put down. He goes into a trance and creative juices flow, (maybe does a little Tai Chi) and he's awed at the visceral reaction he gets when listening.
      He loses himself between the sounds, opens wide to suck it in, feels the music move across his skin, begins to feel connected, maybe sheds a few tears. Then he fathoms the power, witnesses the beauty that his bandmates created.
      Lateralus lyrically is one big "Thank You" to Danny, Justin, and Adam. When I sing along, I'm singing those words to them, as well! ☺️

      I just realized why they might have seemed a bit underwhelmed--The version they listened to isn't high def. Lateralus has to be high-quality audio and LOUD to tickle your brain.

      Mattison Leaf Well said bro. As you can see from my username logo I'm a huge Deftones fan. Tool and Deftones are my favs. I grew up with both bands. Ænima came out when I was a freshman in high school, and was already listening to Undertow and Opiate before Deftones. So these bands having been around the block for a minute, it is cool to have dudes like these guys freshen it up for us metal lovers just like you said!! Made me go and throw Lateralus in the CD player within 15 mins of watching this video I shit you not! I jammed it from front to back!

    The famous FIBONACCI series inside this one song. For tool to have made a song about a mathematical equation while telling the listener to expand their minds is completely insane and it just shows how great of a band tool is and why they are so loved and respected.

      Just to add my two cents, the way the Fibonacci sequence ties into this song and, as a matter of fact, the whole album, is definitely worth looking into. It's really cool. That said, keep in mind the message this song is trying to convey. Don't lose yourself in overanalysis and forget to actually enjoy the music. Listen through your mind but also through your body.

      just to touch on the subject a little further for those who have no idea what kevin is talking about, it's in the syllables of the lyrics, fibonacci sequence is every number after the first two is the sum of the two preceding ones: ie: 1 , 1 , 2 , 3 , 5 , 8 , 13 , 21 , 34 , 55 , 89 , 144, so if you look at the lyrics from a syllable perspective, first it counts up to 8 syllables: [Black] 1 , [then] 1 , [white are] 2 , [all I see] 3 , [In my infancy] 5 , [Red and yellow then came to be] 8
      Then starts counting down: [Reaching out to me] 5 , [lets me see] 3

    The meaning of this song is thinking deeper and look beyond normal life. This song is beyond just music, it's many things... Inspiring, bewildering, educational, and plenty of other things. The amount of thought Tool puts into their music is mind blowing, the lyrics of this song follow the fibonacci sequence. The fibonacci sequence is a series of numbers that are the sum of the two numbers before it.
    For example: 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13...etc
    (1) Black (1) Then (2) White are (3) All I see (5) In my in-fan-cy (8) Red then yel-low came to be (5) Reaching out to me (3) let's me see.
    This continues throughout the entire song. If these numbers are graphed... They would make a spiral.
    Since the lyrics of this song is in sequence with this series of numbers throughout the entire song. It's a metaphor for using your mind to expand and spiral out and discover the unknown.
    Right in two is also a god damned masterpiece.

More about over analyzing choices in life and limiting your scope of experiences and feelings. These guys are branching out to new genres and bands to broaden their experiences, following the suggestions of the song.

      I only stumbled on this channel a month or so ago but I've enjoyed it. Can't remember his name right now but dude on the right admits to being a BIG Korn fan. It's hard to beleive he hasnt heard some of these older tracks by TOOL or some of the real old school Metallica stuff but I sure get a kick out of watching them enjoy them

    Your way of analyzing songs has changed the way I listen to the metal bands I like. I catch myself noticing more details because I now have a tiny George and Ryan in my mind when I hear these songs. Thanks for these videos!
    My recommendation is Ocean Land by Orphaned Land. I think you will like it because it's different. It's an Israeli band trying to make music based on what is common from the cultures in the Middle East. It's all about uniting Free Thinkers!

      @MegaCrasherMusic - I don't think it is the same band (I can't find any reference to Orphaned Land and Radiohead touring together), but I would definitely also recommend Orphaned Land - it's a beautiful band working hard to promote brotherhood between Jews, Muslims, and Christians in the middle east.
      I think I'd also like to see a reaction for Radiohead - I know absolutely nothing about the band, and I bet it would be fun reacting to a Radiohead song for the first time along with the Lost in Vegas guys!

      The fibbonaci sequence and the golden ratio that comes from it is evident in everything from human anatomy to spiral galaxies to sunflowers and tree branches and ..... everything in nature. These guys put it in the song from everything from the lyrics themselves, the syllables in certain verses, the length of the song, and the drum counts in certain sections. Spiral out.

      For sure. Tool is so hard to describe if you haven't heard it. It's rock-ish, but it is always so slow building and dynamic that it becomes trance-like too.

      For those interested in listening to new things, maybe but usually people don't want to leave their comfort zone. I can't even get my work colleague to listen to Tool and he listens to Rock. Why? He made an image of them before even listening to them. Thinks they overthink things. I guess that's what a simple minded person would say.

    Half the Internet has tried to psychoanalyst tool's lyrics. Truth is no-one and everyone is right/wrong. Tool just is. Interestingly tho there is a theory that this album had a hidden meaning (see the holy gift theory). What I loved was watching both of you moving in the groove with no effort.       I love how its not just the lyrics. Its a lot of the song there's the rhythm, hell even the intro of the song starts at 1min and 37.5 seconds in. The golden angle (Fib. Spiral) is 137.5 Degrees. Its crazy how much was hidden in a song that discusses overthinking/overanalyzing.

      Whats also cool is that the time signatures during the verses go from 9/8, 8/8, and to 7/8. The number 987 is the 16th number in the Fibonacci sequence.

    Firstly, if you look at the pattern of the syllables as they’re sung... “Black”=1, “then”=1, “white are”=2, “all I see”=3, “in my in-fan-cy”=5 “red and yell-ow then came to be”=8, “reach-ing out to me”=5, “lets me see”=3, “As bel-ow, so ab-ove and be-yond,
    I i-ma-gine”=13, “drawn be-yond the lines of rea-son”=8, “Push the en-ve-lope”=5, “Watch it bend”=3
    These are the numbers of the fibonacci sequence... in order. The time signature of the chorus is 9/8, 8/8, 7/8... 987 is also the 16th number of the fibonacci sequence... also of you take each successive number of the fibonacci sequence and divide it by the previous number, it converges to the golden ratio, approx equal to 1.618... 1min37sec is when Maynard starts “singing”, which is 1.618minutes!
    Also, the opening lyrics are a depiction of the first scenes you experience as a new-born... when you first open your eyes, all you see is a bright white light, followed by an image in black and white... then the the longest wavelengths come into “focus” ie red and yellow...
    Long story short, the sequence and the golden ratio permeates the whole song!
    This band is on another level!

      i can add that the song goes into the main riff at 01:12....so the intro ends at the beginning of fibonacci sequence...
      then in the coda Maynaard stops to syllabates following Fibonacci sequence and starts singing word after word...shifting out of the spiral...SPIRAL OUT!!!

    I highly recommend you guys check out how the song was structured and written. It's based off the Fibonacci sequence which is a sequence of numbers that goes in the order of the sum of the two preceding numbers. For example, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21 this is also where the lyrics "spiral out" comes from since when you construct a series of squares with the length of every number in the Fibonacci sequence, you get a spiral when you trace through the diaganols of each square. Also if you listen to the opening lyrics, the syllables of each word are representing the numbers in the Fibonacci sequence.
    [1] black[1] then
    [2] white are
    [3] all I see
    [5] in my infancy
    [8] red and yellow then came to be
    [5] reaching out to me
    [3] lets me see
    [2] there is
    [1] so
    [1] much
    [2] more and
    [3] beckons me

      You wana really blow your mind, get this. The whole album is in the wrong order, if you re arrange the tracks in the proper Fibonacci sequence you get a endless ever-flowing song. Look up took the holy gift, someone has already arrange them in on video so you can hear how the songs go directly into each other. On top of it in that order the lyrics are much more cohesive song to song.

    As some have mentioned in the comments already, the song's time signature is 9/8, 8/8, and 7/8 and the syllables of the lyrics are in the form of the Fibonacci Sequence, i.e. 0+1 = 1, 1+1 = 2, 1+2 = 3, 2+3 =5, 3+5 = 8, 5+8 = 13, etc. Hence...

      Its pretty interesting but after hearing people talk about it for years & years, it gets mundane. Hell, even the writer of those lyrics, Maynard Keenan even admitted on the JRE that he considers it to be a juvenile structuring concept for lyrics.

      While we're at it might as well mention that 987 is F(16) in the Fibonacci Sequence. The time signature from 9 to 8 to 7 is just for the chorus though. The intro is in 4/4, the verse is in 5/* and the awesome finale is in 3/*
      (*never got around to figure out when it's supposed to be an 8 or a 4 there)

    This song makes me cry sometimes for no reason. And my breathing gets weird and i feel like im peaking on acid a bit when he starts the verse "with my feet upon the ground i lose myself between the sound and open wide to suck it in i feel it move across my skin..." Parabol/parabola is a weirdly emotinal trigger as well. Dunno why.

      This happened when I heard their newest albums second song, Pneuma for the second time (the first time was just taking it in); the same thing happens with the last song on Avenged Sevenfold’s last album the Stage, it’s called Exist. They said they wrote the song as a representation of the Big Bang, with the lyrics coming in to represent humanity. Kind of weird to notice the strange parallels between the two songs themes just now. Weirder that I didn’t notice before. Brooks Wackerman’s drumming is amazing also. No one can top Danny Carey but Wackerman is pretty good.

    The intro of this song uses the Fibonacci Sequence, 1,1,2,3,5,8 etc. Maynard's lyrics follow this pattern in the syllables.

    Also when plotted on a chart the Fibonacci Sequence creates a spiral, which again comes in with the lyrics of the chorus "spiral out".

      And then - isn't there a connection to the shape of DNA strands being a spiral? Some kind of metaphorical tie in to the potential evolution of species (such as in forty-six and two). Supposedly the Fib sequence in symmetry gives plausibility to the shape of DNA, being that of a superior shape natural in its construction toward optimization of life? The whole "ride the spiral to the end, we may just go where no ones been". Does it sound to far fetched? A desperately reaching fan theory? Or have you heard anything similar from a more authentic source?
      These two commentators are relating the message to the evolution of open mindedness... but I'm pretty sure it's more related to the evolution of species by natural development and/or synthetic influence.

    Rosetta Stoned by TOOL is incredible as well. The lyrics tell the story about how he was high asf and saw a spaceship come down and is abducted by aliens. Maynard would dig this reaction and your analysis about the music being philosophical. Seeing Tool live is an out of body experience!!

      Just the first stanza, matching the Fibonacci Sequence to the syllables up to 8, then backing it down again. And Maynard's lyrics speak to his appreciation of Native American art which is heavily influenced by black, white, red, and yellow.
      There are more moments that go further with the Sequence later in the lyrics, but I don't know 'em without looking it up right now.
      I'm still phenomenally impressed with Danny Carey's drumming in multiple time signatures (9/8, 8/8, and 7/8...987, which is the 16th number in the Fibonacci Sequence) throughout the song.

    Tool is a personal favorite of mine. Hugely influencial. Not just on my musical taste but on my growth as a person. They are very philosophical. Song is about humans consciously harnessing our future evolution as a species. An underlying theme in many of their songs. Check out Big Wreck. Another hugely talented band.

      10,000 Days just blows me away. It's my fav Tool album... and I love all the others. When I first listened to the album I had to stop it and take a breather a few songs into it... really it blew me away.

    When I worked in radio, if there was a problem with the computer that handled playback (all our music was digitized, and played back by a computer) my go-to CD single was Lateralus because it was 8 minutes long, which gave me lots of time to figure out WTF was wrong with the computer and fix it before I had to change CDs.

    This is one of my favorite new channels. I love the honesty and the variety you guys bring. Tool was and still is one of my favorite bands of all time. Their music really hits home, especially once you have had a psychedelic/shamanic experience. There is more to reality than we see on a regular conscious level. Thanks for the video!

    Thanks for doing another Tool song fellas. One of the best rock bands of the 90's that are still around. You should really put on some good head phones and listen to the entire Lataralus album. It's a masterpiece.

      Tool is certainly a band you are intended to listen to by the album and not as single songs. So much of the albums build upon themes presented earlier. Particularly if you dive into the philosophy/occult references

    Fibonacci sequence. The syllables Maynard sings in the first verse follow the first six numbers in the pattern, ascending and descending in the sequence 1-1-2-3-5-8-5-3. "Black (1), then (1), white are (2), all I see (3), in my infancy (5). Red and yellow then came to be (8), reaching out to me (5). Lets me see (3). Also time stamps in the drums follow the sequence.

    You guys HAVE TO watch all of TOOLs music videos, the first time I watched TOOL i was hooked. I still remember watching SCHISM with my older brother on MTV, when I was a teenager, it blew my mind and have been a TOOL fan ever since.

      I was at my grandma's house for a dinner, with my brother, dad, a couple cousins, and my aunt and uncle. MTV just happened to be on, and the music video for Schism came on, and everyone just sat there mesmerized and watched/listened to the entire thing. It was a really cool moment. I had already listened to Tool before that, but I don't think anyone else in my family had.

    Hey I just wanted to say GREAT JOB GUYS!!! You guys actually listen and take time to interpret the music not just skipping the words, but what is most awesome is how well you guys see the meanings or messages in the songs. Tool is awesome and I have been a fan since I was a kid. I had been hearing Tool wrong for a long time and then found the deeper meanings while being at a concert and finally actually paying attention.
