    I like the tournament format but might suggest doing within-band rather than between-band tournaments. So maybe take the top 4 fan suggested songs from a band and pit them against each other. That way you get to delve a bit more into a band’s work and judge songs on a more level field.

    Schism had to grow on me and now I think it’s one of their best. Some songs are just like that for some people. Sometimes I think those are the best, most long lasting songs. Some quick hip beat or groove you like right away might get old and stale real fast. But going back to a song you didn’t overplay and then find new things you like about it that you didn’t really give it time to before is awesome🖤

      I literally have no idea who the hell is suggesting these song choices. No real Tool fan would suggest Schism to someone that's only listened to a few Tool songs. This should have been The Grudge, Vicarious, Right in Two, Jambi, Sober to name a few. I'd have even suggested Ticks and Leeches as it's something amazing from them and a departure from their normal material. These are all far more accessible (Jambi might take a few listens to get the structure) and are far better choices for someone that's fairly new to their music. I struggled to understand the choice of Aenima in the first round, and I'm really struggling to understand the choice of Schism here.
      Overall, I'd have said The Grudge should have been the choice for the first round, and then Vicarious in the second. Hard-hitting lyrics, fantastic musicianship, and they're great songs to bang your head to. Aenima and Schism, just lol!

    Even as a TooL fan since the late 90s I find Schism to be an acquired taste. It's a very unique song in their catalogue that's very much in their style but one that goes from being soft to sharp to heavy and back again. It's up there in terms of some their best overall quality of composition and the thoughtfulness in the lyrics left an impression on me for sure.
    Glad you guys took to the time to listen to it. You're under no obligation to love it but it's a great marker for the type of band TooL is, willing to experiment while still maintaining a coherence of rhythm and melody.

It is since then my favorite band, best live show I've ever seen, big influence in drumming. Just amazing.

    This song goes through the same musical journey that the lyrics talk about.
    It starts off nice & smooth and continues to become louder, harder, & more raw & vicious, just like the relationship he's singing about.
    My favorite part is the final attempt at something smooth and nice as it has small outbursts of rage that quickly turns in chaos & him screaming, "I KNOW THE PIECES FIT!!!" over and over again...
    And then BAM!!!.... abrupt silence.
    It's over..... And all you can do is move on to your next song.

  • @tinman24611
    @tinman24611 5 ปีที่แล้ว +203

    I think his lack of finding a groove is because he's looking in the wrong place. The groove is set by the bass throughout with the drums and guitar playing in all directions on top. He's used to a drum beat groove and the off time drumming is throwing him. Needs to tap his feet to the bass line and he'll feel the groove. What always attracted me to tool was the bass guitar how it's used and the complexity they allow him to perform, rather than just play the root notes for the guitar or lock into the drum for the rhythm. Of course as a former bassist I'm biased but I think even non musician types can appreciate how everyone gets to be free and expressive in tool and showcase the mastery of their instruments.

But to have one going “yes the drums and yes the change over in beats and....” but also see someone who may not love it. Thats ok. Its not your music or your style and thats great. It dsnt have to be. But you sit and listen to them, look into it and really experience it bc you dont know what you like or dont like. That’s unique for youtube vids and i love it! I'm not a music theory pro, but I can explain the groove to most of this song. 1-2-3-4-5.1-2.1-2.1-2-3. Alternating measures of 5/8 and 7/8. Once you learn it, it's hard to not catch it... But I'm weird and love music where I have to think about the groove lol.

    • @alispie
      @alispie 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Terry Beaton Technically, yes. It's more a matter of feel though. It doesn't play like 12/8. It feels like alternating measures of 7/8. That's why this song is considered to have like 50 time signature changes lol. The Rick Beato video mentioned is a great breakdown. Just a great channel in general honestly, love that guy's content. He actually addresses why he doesn't consider it 12/8 and it's basically what I just said.

    It's so exciting watching people listen to this for the first time. Seeing their reactions to the things you felt when you were young. Watching the dude on the right first get excited when he heard the interlude where the bass line leads into the explosion and back into the following verse. It's just really cool. Reminds you why you fell in love with something to begin with, and lets you appreciate it all over again.

  • @FrancisSawyer
    @FrancisSawyer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ryan, that's a totally natural reaction. You can never expect to love a Tool song the first time you listen to it. It's too tightly wound and complex and your brain needs time to make sense of it all. The best songs I find are the ones that I don't get right away. The type that after 3 or more listens it suddenly clicks and you go "Oh of course"! Schism is a great example of that. Give it a few more listens Ryan. I think it will click. I love the both of you and what you do here. Great idea for the concept and both of you have a great chemistry together! Fantastic channel.

  • @timothykennett5976
    @timothykennett5976 5 ปีที่แล้ว +64

    The point of the song is to be dissonant in its harmonies and rhythms, of which the time signature shifts between 5/8 and 7/8, but together meshes into an easier 12/8 harmony. In many ways it exemplifies the theme of this channel, that there’s beauty in discomfort and to challenge what you think.
