Bro, I live in East Toledo. I walked to the show with 12 other friends, down the street from my house. Back then, Tool shows felt personal. Now... I'm sure you get it.
Classic!! Not only the instrumentation of Tool but the lyricism of Maynard is what pushes them above. The inclusion of instrumentation, the tribal factor as you describe, is what sets them apart as it provides atmosphere.
Scott Schoenkopf I try to get into Mastodon which had incredible musical ability similar to Tool but the vocal quality is awful compared to what Maynard does.
I never liked reaction videos, but you guys are are straight cool, man. I'm a Tool fanatic, so that's why I watched this. I'm glad I found you and subbed. Peace.
I don't know if there is any truth to it but I've always heard that Danny Carey practiced tribal drum techniques/patterns and studied these very uniquely human (drumming) sounds we've been making for hundreds of thousands of years. It taps into a primal and visceral connection we all share. Deliberate or not, I think that's artistically brilliant!
It's very true and Master Atoka? (Spelling) spent a lot of time with Danny and I believe is credited on this album...eulogy maybe? Been a long time since I read up on it
Interesting that “mother” and “mom” is interpreted as Mother Nature. I always thought he was at such a point of stress that he was literally calling for his mom. As my grandmother was in the hospital dying she uttered the words “momma come get me”. It’s one of the most heartbreaking things I’ve ever heard.
I always thought it was a reference to the irresponsible manchild calling out to mommy to make it all better with the listener knowing it’s well beyond her pay-grade.
I didn’t see it the comments but the premise from this song is from a comedian named Bill Hicks. Maynard is a huge fan of his and actually most of this album is stuff inspired by Hicks.
@@electricant55 I know it's not metal. They react to other stuff besides metal. And I feel KC is a precursor to prog metal. Im sure the members of tool can tell you their fondness of KC themselves.
This was the first Tool song I had ever heard. It was a on a mix CD in high school. I spent the next few hours trying to find someone who could tell me which band it was. What an amazing find. Life changing!

Longtime Tool fan here and linguistics aficionado. I have yet to meet another Tool fan who knows how to pronounce this song's name either, but it's very simple. The "æ" vowel in old English and modern phonetics is pronounced like the "a" in "cat" or "ash" in American English. The song's name is a play on words of "anima" (which may be a reference to the Latin word for life/soul/consciousness or the Jungian concept of the unconscious feminine side of man) and "enema" (which means what you think it means and is certainly reflected in the song's lyrics). Bottom line: It should be pronounced like "animal" without the "l" at the end.
@ToolGal462 many people pronounce it "lat-tril-us" or "lateral-us" however I have always pronounced it "lat-er-aah-lis" and to this day I've got no idea which one is the way tool would pronounce it haha
@2:46 the lyrics in the song Ænema go "Learn to swim, see you down in Arizona Bay." Some people may not know that Tool especially Maynard was a big Bill Hicks (stand up comedian) fan. One of Hick's last comedy albums was posthumously released and it is called Arizona Bay. It's where he jokes that L.A. and all of it's "Lizard Scum" will fall into the Pacific Ocean due to "THE BIG ONE", a giant California earthquake which may happen soon! 😂
David Thorson Eulogy is my second favorite Tool song behind Pushit. It's gonna be difficult for those guys to put out another album that will dethrone Aenima as my favorite record. Lateralus overtook Undertow as #2, but I did not like it at all at first.
chris, I envy you, sounds like ya got a great gf, haha! I have seen them 4x's, but it's been a long time, in fact, it's been since just after Lateralus came out. I live in the Seattle area, so I've seen them at The Gorge, Mercer Arena, The Tacoma Dome and The Paramount Theater. (I've seen APC 2x's, once with the original members(DAMN Paz was/is hot!)) Honestly, I still don't care for 10,000 Days, but it's been a long time since I have it a chance, so perhaps it's time for another go at it, anyway, have fun at the show, and BTW, you've inspired me to look up tour info so I can go, cheers!

@@markgraham5971 They already did it and didn't like it. I was thinking maybe Loud Love or something like that since I'm not an edge lord trying to get a rise out of people.
@@eclipsewrecker That part is probably the best part of that song. And your right, they might second guess that the song is over on that part. But thats when you tell em to smoke a steamroller blunt and close your eyes. Cause on that part, after all the fustration and rage, is the eye of the storm. A vast openness compels your very being. A feeling more than yourself, free to wonder. Then, those couple seconds of silence leave you breathless just before a rude awakening of Maynard's shout. For a first time listener, your not gonna get that like the rest of us. Which is an unfortunate burden.
Dont read the lyrics while listening until you fully immerse yourself in the song. Treat his voice as an instrument, when you focus on lyrics it's easy to miss the big picture.
I know this is a really late response but wouldn't reading the lyrics further immerse you into the song, not the opposite? I mean, you can still listen to the groove and singing, while mainly focusing on what he's actually saying.
Tools Rosetta stoned is an absolute masterpiece. My personal favorite drumming song of all time. Danny Carey drums in 3 different time signatures simultaneously...amazing.
I haven't been digging the new format as of late so this is the first one I've watched in awhile. But man, did I miss your reactions lol. Hilarious stuff guys. Respect for trying something new.
Max Kilcoyne Oh, I completely agree. I wasn’t comparing skill, but styles. KJ has a notorious predilection for tribal-style drumming, driving-yet often oddly liquid-bass lines, and the use of the guitar as a primarily atmospheric instrument, even when played as a rhythm instrument. That was the connexion I was attempting to draw.
Look into the Jungian “Aenima.” (Not enema). “Mom” May be a double entendre for the feminine archetype “anemia,” which is the chaotic/ creative force in all things AND mother Nature hitting reset. The song has a bit more depth if you take the time and look. Great reaction for a first look though
It you guys ever see this and have the time. Please look up Bill Hicks. He is a Comedian, his stand up act was used as lyrics in this song, cHe passed away but they dedicated this whole album to him
It’d be the most pretentious talk-o-thon known to man outside of politics. I love both but 75% of both artists fan bases are holier than thou because their idols are top of the line lyricists.
Really digging the new (to me) format of the videos. For me, it's perfect and what I want. My biggest gripe with previous videos were the poor audio quality of the track you're listening to, as well as there would be times you would pause at the worst spot because you didn't know what was coming next (for instance, the War Pigs intro reaction video), so going back to play the previous 5 seconds or so to "rebuild" the climax of where you left off is key. By far the best reaction channel, as you guys are constantly providing valuable insight and feedback for people who may haven't taken the time to pull up the lyrics and think about them from another perspective. Really appreciate the work you guys are constantly putting in to make the videos better each time.
This song is a tribute to Bill Hicks, a very enlightened comic who is no longer with us who once joked about how much he hated California, LA in particular. He wished and hoped that California would break off of the main land and fall into the sea like geologists have predicted it would.
Was thinking same. Only two artist I know who can absolutely pull you out of your world, or the world that's been crafted around you, and in a minute your flooded and then swimming in theirs.

@@krt88nc I totally agree. I just can't get into Mastodon like others do.
I never liked reaction videos, but you guys are are straight cool, man. I'm a Tool fanatic, so that's why I watched this. I'm glad I found you and subbed. Peace.
Shit I betcha there's more tool fans than meshugga, I don't even like them
Just react to all of Tool, we won't be entirely satisfied until then, lol
Rivers of Nihil - Where Owls Know My Name
Yes!!!
I honetly don't know if them doing a techdeath band is a good idea but it's my favorite genre so I want it to happen.
@@ProgHead89 Thats just about the most accessible tech death track ive heard tho. I'd go with spheres of madness by decapitated as well.
@@Howard_the_Duck True. It's a good test song. If they can't handle that we know they probably won't like more techdeath.
@@Howard_the_Duck In fact that song is barely techdeath really. It's more prog. So I'm not sure that would count.
Aenema gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it and I’ve heard it thousands of times!!!!!
Never have a hit play faster. So pumped.
Benjamin Smith was disappointing.... they didn’t grasp the idea behind the skng
He studied different cults , geometry etc too he's a genius
You got to do 21st century schizoid man by king crimson.
It's the beginning of all progressive metal.
Having a Prog tournament without KC is blasphemy, but Fripp won't be having any of that so I don't blame them.
@@irti_pk KC is not metal
The version with Maynard?
@@electricant55 Yeah I know.
@@electricant55 I know it's not metal.
They react to other stuff besides metal.
And I feel KC is a precursor to prog metal.
Im sure the members of tool can tell you their fondness of KC themselves.
They definitely need to do parabol¶bola that song is amazing
Eric Loria yesssssssss fr fr fr fr fr fr again and again
How have that not done sober. That's like lesson 1 for new tool fans
This was the first Tool song I had ever heard. It was a on a mix CD in high school. I spent the next few hours trying to find someone who could tell me which band it was. What an amazing find. Life changing!
The first tool song i heard was Sober. My aunt introduced me to a lot of great music.
My first tool song was a reactiom my friend had me do too parabol/parabola and then this song. Im loving too soo much. I can't wait for my friend to show me more!
I saw them opening for rage against the machine at festival in 1993. Fan for 28 years now
Longtime Tool fan here and linguistics aficionado.
@ToolGal462 LAY-bee-yuh 😉
@ToolGal462 many people pronounce it "lat-tril-us" or "lateral-us" however I have always pronounced it "lat-er-aah-lis" and to this day I've got no idea which one is the way tool would pronounce it haha
Much of the album plays off Jungian concepts...
@@alysonhogg6543 Danny Carey pronounces it ladder-AL-iss
THE GRUDGE! Maynard's scream tho
This guy th-cam.com/video/qOmob_3KnR8/w-d-xo.html
Angry, long ass scream lol brutal
Tool’s writting is awakened and brings another perspective to life. Free thinkers, for suure
Tool - Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned deserves a reaction for the lyrics alone.
Maybe. The song itself is total shit the first time you hear it though
J Peterson I agree I used to think it was the worst tool song but the more I listened the more I realized it was one of their best
Yeah if you've never done psychedelics. Otherwise its pretty bang on describing a psychadelic journey
THAT’S WHAT I’M SAYING
Rosetta Stoned is my favorite song of all time, an absolute masterpiece
@2:46 the lyrics in the song Ænema go "Learn to swim, see you down in Arizona Bay." Some people may not know that Tool especially Maynard was a big Bill Hicks (stand up comedian) fan. One of Hick's last comedy albums was posthumously released and it is called Arizona Bay. It's where he jokes that L.A. and all of it's "Lizard Scum" will fall into the Pacific Ocean due to "THE BIG ONE", a giant California earthquake which may happen soon! 😂
"I wish for Los Angeles to disappear."
"Wow what excellent bass"
san francisco and silicon valley should be flush away... down to san francisco bay... that would be a great start for armageddon...
Cmon guys, we need them to do Jambi...I just need to see the reaction to that breakdown :)
The best Tool song.

Schism or vicarious. You wont be disappointed.
Should've been pushit or the grudge, I think those would have been better for a prog competition
@Brian Morgan I know, just sayin
Brian Morgan the fans voted for this one on pateon we are the ones who shoulda known better

Pushiiiiiiiit. Probably still my fav Tool song.
I was just thinking of the Temple of Doom. "Kali Ma... Kali Ma!!!"

People are sleeping on Tool-Eulogy and H of this album.
David Thorson Eulogy is my second favorite Tool song behind Pushit. It's gonna be difficult for those guys to put out another album that will dethrone Aenima as my favorite record. Lateralus overtook Undertow as #2, but I did not like it at all at first.
Colin, couldn't have said it better! My girlfriend just got me tickets to see them in Kansas City. I hope to hear some new music by then!
chris, I envy you, sounds like ya got a great gf, haha!
Sleeping on Eulogy for sure
David Thorson the whole album whips ass tbh
As a child of the 80's and a teen of the 90's rock/grunge/alternative a.k.a best 20 years of music ever, I am so glad that you appreciate this genre. I think that boundaries were drawn a long time ago but I am so glad ya'll are recognizing the artistry of my favorite era of music! I really regret that when we were coming together in this day was erased. We were never closer than we were in 2000. The clubs in 2000 were mixed and everybody was cool and into it. I don't know why it changed. Thank ya'll for bringing it back.
Honestly hadn't been on the channel since you guys upgraded your set. This song brought me back.
Same here. I miss the "two dorks in their garage" vibe, but I'm going to check out the rest.
Greetings from Arizona Bay! \m/
Tool is so dope they get stuck in my head every time I listen to them.
When can we expect the next ozzy era sabbath song? Would love to see you guys react to Sabbath Bloody Sabbath arguably one of their best songs with the best riff and is easily ozzy at his prime
That was interesting....ha ha. Tool is that for sure. I absolutely love them. They're sound, timing, and lyrical content are all absolutely genius. Tool makes my arm hair stand up. Keep it up guys, I adore how you objectively listen to this stuff. Personally, I like Tool and Meshuggah, but Tool brings it home for mama every time.
"Shout out to the free thinkers" is almost exactly what this song is about. Living your own life and not conforming. re-read the lyrics.
i love your channel by the way
It's saying California (LA specifically) needs to be washed away with an apocalyptic flood and flushed into the ocean. He was also throwing spit at the Hollywood elites and the barbie doll lifestyle that they have influenced on their people.
Soundgarden "My Wave", "Rusy Cage", "A Room A Thousand Years Wide", "Superunknown", " Black Rain"... do it
Jesus Christ Pose. Their heads would explode, like most normies lol. Saw a guy try to rip a jukebox off the wall because of that song.

But yeah, amazing lyrics.
That's debatable
Schism too
Not even close (2)
No.
You guys would DEFINITELY enjoy Ticks and Leeches from Tool.
Yep! With both of them loving the tribal drum sound, Tickes and Leaches will be a great choice for them. Danny blows me away on that song everytime.
They will hate the 2min “boring” part in the middle
@@eclipsewrecker That part is probably the best part of that song. And your right, they might second guess that the song is over on that part. But thats when you tell em to smoke a steamroller blunt and close your eyes. Cause on that part, after all the fustration and rage, is the eye of the storm. A vast openness compels your very being. A feeling more than yourself, free to wonder. Then, those couple seconds of silence leave you breathless just before a rude awakening of Maynard's shout. For a first time listener, your not gonna get that like the rest of us. Which is an unfortunate burden.
Hell yeah!!!!
You guys do such a great job. I absolutely love your channel and what you do. Thank you.
I love when you guys play Tool!! My absolute favorite band! Going to see them again in two weeks!!!! 🖤🖤🖤🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼
Hell yeah! Saw them twice
I saw them last November. So glad I was able to do it before covid hit.
Extremely underappreciated song. From the ball breaking lyrics about their friend to an amazing Melody line. To insane music
Technically amazing but it is mostly technical wank tbh
I love your new setup guys and the sound quality is heaps better especially the playback
I haven't been digging the new format as of late so this is the first one I've watched in awhile. But man, did I miss your reactions lol. Hilarious stuff guys. Respect for trying something new.
feels like the audio quality is worse since they switched microphones and sometimes forget to get closer to the mic
Love to see your reactions to Tools Stinkfist.
Yes, please!
Best way I can explain Tool's usage of bass is that they are like string-drums, and it matches the passion and intensity on the actual drums.
RC15O5 The only other band I can compare to Tool’s rhythm section etc is late-70s/early-80s Killing Joke.
J. Robert Hopfer zeppelin was consistent. Maybe not as heavy but always as good
Max Kilcoyne Oh, I completely agree.
TOOL ✊🏽😍😍😍🔥🔥
Man I think this idea is so g’damn awesome!!!
Can't wait for their upcoming album release.
Magilla480 could be tomorrow or could be 25 years from now
You'll be waiting a long time.
All the band members have said it'll be out around May or June. Not exactly holding my breath, but I'd call it a good bet to say it'll be this year.
The day that never comes
Lmao where my Metallica fans at?
Great song, tough choice in a prog battle. Definitely not one of their most proggy songs
And if you think the bass and drums sound great in headphones, they are ALL INCREDIBLE live🙌🏻🙌🏻
I think L Ron Howard was the founder of the church of Fonzie.
Seriously, your conversation about that was amazing!
Okay so when's the next Tool song?
Song still gives me chills ...in a good way ... best album
He is a Comedian, his stand up act was used as lyrics in this song, cHe passed away but they dedicated this whole album to him
Ron Howard out here catching strays.
😭💀
If the Devin Townsend Project isn't in a Prog Metal tournament then it doesn't even count.
Tool fans would stan-pede the stans....🤓🤘 Love the reactions and the time ya'll invest in "reading between the lines"........
It’d be the most pretentious talk-o-thon known to man outside of politics. I love both but 75% of both artists fan bases are holier than thou because their idols are top of the line lyricists.
TOOL drop new album in the next 3 months, hopefully
I'll believe it when I have it in my hands! Lol. I hope so too, though!
People been saying that for 10 years
I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re still trolling us.
Dig me up from my grave in thousands of years once it actually drops
Im gonna say probably june
I watch these guys more consistently than anything online lol. Best reaction videos, always open minded and humorous.
Anyone bring up the Bill Hicks inspiration yet? If not, Bill Hicks was a comedy legend and this song was directly inspired by one of his bits.
Charles Lizana I was scanning the comments for this. Bill had a comedy album named "Arizona Bay" RIP Bill Hicks
I'm surprised this many people didn't catch on as literally this entire album is an ode to Bill
A great progressive band is Pain of Salvation. Check one of their songs out.
This song is a tribute to Bill Hicks, a very enlightened comic who is no longer with us who once joked about how much he hated California, LA in particular.
He wished and hoped that California would break off of the main land and fall into the sea like geologists have predicted it would.
Didnt know that thats hilarious #RIP
He has a comedy album named "Arizona Bay" Bill was one of the greatest.
There are a lot of Tool fans that are also Stans....both bands have super deep lyrical meanings afterall

I was 17 or 18, and I remember printing the lyrics off and handing to them my 14 yr old sister and told her to listen to it.
Turned her into a Tool fan instantly
The way he sings thru the slow breakdowns, he does in a way that you feel a NEED to hear each next syllable to guide you thru the breakdown
It's all about the timing he uses with his pronunciation playing off the timing of the bass
May the metal fans always love you. You guys do great reviews.
