My first ever reaction to Tool. I was 13. On a salmon fishing trip with my dad. We were sitting in his car taking a break from the rain, wet and cold he told me "Listen to this!" And he played Eulogy as loud as his Toyota could! I was in awe, never forgot that song. It left an everlasting scar on my mind. For years, I could not shake what I felt when I heard that song for the first time. After the release of Fear Inoculum, my love and passion for the band has grown ever stronger, and I am being brought back to that moment in my dads car, listening to Tool and trying to get warm. This is a band that will be with me for as long as I live! Thanks for the reaction, guys!

I'm also not asking for more, I don't care for grandiose vocal passages that critics like Anthony Fantano are criticizing him for not doing, Tool has never been about showing off anyway so that's not my problem. But to me Maynard is variety, and in this album he sounds to me a lot more conventional this time, either being the leading melody or just following along with the band, instead of being a piece of this cohesive, morphing puzzle. It's hard to explain, maybe me and my friends are just wrong, music is subjective anyway. And he definitely doesn't ruin the songs at all for me, but I do find myself tuning him out to listen to the other three gentleman, or in songs like descending just straight up skipping to the middle. I agree with the APC comment, but to me he sounds a lot more passionate in that album, but then again, maybe he is as passionate here and I'm wrong. Like I said...subjective.

As such a long-time metal head, I think you've hit an important point right there: "it's hard to go back". Sometimes the musicianship of these players keys you into other ways of listening, and that new ear can get you into other types of music that those musicians are also listening to: classical, jazz, fusion, etc. That's why pop music can be so limiting: you just get locked into certain expectations and a comfort zone. Most people I grew up with who started off with Led Zeppelin, Metalica, Megadeth, Slayer, and such, now listen to a wide variety of music--not all of them, but most, and they are some of the most open-minded people it's been my pleasure to know.

As a prog rock/metal band with songs over 10 minutes and a 13 year ''break'', they still managed to score first place on the charts for a few weeks, above some of the most known pop artists who also released a new album at the time. Most of the negative comments I stumbled upon were from either people who dislike Tool and don't like to see them on the spotlight or Tool fans that are angry at Maynard because he didn't sing much.
In my opinion, this is one of the best albums I've heard. I'm someone who listens to hip-hop, rock, metal, pop, eletronic music, country and much more. I don't want to sound like a Tool stan and say they're the best ever because it's impossible to say something is better than the other when it's different (for example, comparing Tool to Eminem) but this album and this song in particular are some of the best pieces of craft of music I've ever listened to in my life. The album has been out for almost a year and believe it or not, I still listen to it at least once a day.

I still think Lateralus and Aenima were lightening in a bottle, this album is fantastic but i think Maynard was a tad sharper on the earlier pair.. i don't reeeally think of 10,000 days as a full length tool album, but that's another subject~ these songs are great, my favourite is invincible at the moment, but i just think songs like Reflection, H., the obvious Lateralus, Parabol/Parabola... A few tracks from Salival.. there's something different coming from the weird dude crouched in the background~ (all of this should be taken as having the friendly inflection of a lifelong tool maniac)

But it is so AWFULLY (awful being their version of a "the doors" song, and so awesome) like a "The Doors" song it almost sounds as if it WERE a THE DOORS song. Especially due to the keyboards, which, of course, there are none of. However, if there WERE keyboards, it would be the BEST AND MOST AWFUL "The Doors" song ever created, even by THE DOORS. I don’t know who was saying this album was not worthy and it was the “same old stuff”. From the moment I heard each of the songs, I said to myself if they never make another album, while I will miss new material, I think this album is a COMPLETE MASTERPIECE and belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the best albums of all time. It transcended my life and completed my TOOL obsession that has been with me for 28 of my 43 years of life.

Tool's albums are real, all of them. But they are also auto-biographical. FI is about the fears of getting older and mortality, the naysayers, and trying to stay relevant. FI about is about shutting out the all of the culling voices and reaching deep within to create something new despite your own self doubts and everyone telling you you're getting too old and that you're over the hill. Tool is Gen-X's (my generation) greatest group. Yes, Gen-X is now approaching 60 (can you believe it!) I know that I am proud and inspired by them.
My ranking of Tool albums are in reverse order last to first. I'm just a tad younger than Danny, but their albums have all fit my life when I was that age. I understand that might be a minority opinion and will not question any difference of opinion, because those different opinions are completely valid, depending on your time of life. I only hope that they bring out another gem in their 60's!

Well.. melodically, it IS the same old stuff. You're kinda delusional if you deny that. It's a good album, but it would have been better had it been released in like 2010. Music has progressed far past what they did on FI, and to me, the whole thing feels incredibly outdated. I really really hoped for something new, and I definitely didn't get that. The only thing I consistently loved on the album were Maynards vocals. Culling Voices, Invincible and Pneuma were great, but I'm very meh on most of the record. I just wish they were more bold with the melody choices. Every song has a chord progression that could have been on the last three albums, and that's not a good sign to me. Seems like Adam is the one who cant step outside their melodic boundaries. Would have loved more emotion put into the record, but oh well. Hoping they release one final project, one that's much more inspired.

Nobody EVER has done such an incredible version of "THE DOORS" song, even though it's not a "THE DOORS" song. What an incredible cover. Oh wait sorry... i forgot... it's not a THE DOORS cover. It just sounds like it is. My bad.
