she was awesome not just the beauty of her voice but her phrasing and breath control and her delivery of the emotions with every song, and this was a work lead delivered from a napkin with scribbled lyrics, but it was so perfect it was never updated she was a unique talent with an unfortunate weakness that took her from us life can be cruel, but enjoy her legacy, this masquerade is brilliant also, but so is everything she sang, and she was the drummer initially and was equally brilliant try ticket to ride a Beatles cover she drums on that, and on rainy days and Mondays

Karen's 19yo voice was discovered by Herb Alpert. She sang her version of "Ticket To Ride" Beatles cover, for her first album. Paul McCartney thought she sang it better and stated 'Karen has the most angelic voice I have ever heard'. A few years later, John Lennon saw her at an LA restaurant and told her 'you have a fabulous voice, luv'. Studios nicknamed her 'one take' since she almost never took more than one take record a song. Her brother, Richard, dubbed her voice for ALL female harmonies to her songs as well. 4 Grammys and 1975 Rock Drummer of the Year (Playboy), Gold and Platinum albums. I believe the evidence strongly supports that she had the best female voice - ever. KC sang to you, not at you, resulting in a silk-like mesmerizing voice that commanded your attention. No auto-tune, gimmicks, or screaming. Dionne Warwick was a close friend. She never knew true love. Married a guy in 1982 who apparently misled her and mistreated her. She filed for divorce and finally received divorce papers the day she died. Struggled with her mother's lack of love and her own self-image. Onset of serious anorexic symptoms in 1975-'76. Died February 1983 at 32 in Downey, CA, in her parents home from complications from anorexia.

The best Crystal clear velvet contralto voice. No other sounded like her.Such a standalone stellar sound, she didn't even need backing vocals. For me Karene and her fellow '70s iconic singer and beloved friend Olivia Newton John(a crystal clear primo-soprano) were the 2 greatest standalone female Soloists in pure pop music genre ever.Of course Karen was in a duo accompanied by vocalist and great arranger and pianist Richard. But she was such an unavoidable sun.Richard is so proud of her legacy. So is music.

this was a very popular song back in the day. I being a hard core fan cannot think of any songs in their catalog I don't really like. other songs I would suggest: Only Yesterday (my favorite) Kiss me the way you did last night, Sailing on the Tide, Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft, All you get from love is a love song, Now (her last recording) some of these selections are deep cuts.....Also there is a disco Karen side that is My Body Keeps changing my mind a must listen. thank you for the reaction. this is the first video of yours I have watched. will hit the like and subscribe.

I love Karen Carpenters voice. It's like rich velvet coffee. One I think you'd really like is - Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft. This had quite a different feel to their other songs.

Always loved this song! My top favorite song by the Carpenters for sure!Superstar made it to #2 on the billboard Hot 100 back in 1971! I was only 7 years old at that time!

I was a few years older. I feel I grew up listening to them (in fact our family friends lived a few houses from them in Downey, CA). It was wonderful to hear their hits each time they were released. Wasn't it wonderful to have the opportunity to grow up while they performed their magic and we could listen to them almost several times a day? And today, 50 years later, I am still listening to these hits which are as fresh and relevant as 1971. Contrast to today and the garbage today's youth has. smh

Beautiful song, beautiful vocals. Goodbye To Love is another one of my favourite Carpenters songs. Nice review Ollie, thank you. Can I ask, how is Kieron doing, it's been a while.

The Carpenters are great! They had 17 #1 hits on the Easy Listening Chart in the USA! Hard to go wrong with their music. Try their hit called Sing. This one is more upbeat for them. Karen's voice is unsurpassed.

This song is like an Anthem. Carpenters version released mid August c1971 & was an instant Hit. I like how you chose the original version that played over radio waves. You can hear how prominent the Trombones come in on bass line plus other instrumentals. Rich made several versions since, constantly trying to improve on this.
In my opinion it was too much work (including his latest Philharmonic Cast) with very little, if any imo to the overall sound & feel of the song.
I get the feeling Richard didn't care for the brass in the chorus because every "enhanced" or "improved" version he made has them quite subdued.
Karen of course, could not be improved upon. Totally angelic & lovely vocals!

Karen Carpenter has been known to be more accurate LIVE than on the studio version!!! UNIQUE! Only Anne Murray comes close!

Hi Ollie, I did some searching to find this reaction. Usually YT algorithms shows me Carpenters reactions. You need to do more so the Carpenters Army will find you. You got a few but there’s a bunch more that can find you. That said, I’m going to recommend a Medley they did live in 1970. We have a young Karen just doing her thing and the boys trying to keep up. It’s pure magic. The video is essential to this performance. Enjoy!
