- The Kent Trouvaille VS The Trek Marlin 5 ultimate comparison!! Who will win??
In this video I buy, fix, and compare the Kent Trouvaille mountain bike from Walmart with one of the most popular mountain bikes on Earth, the Trek Marlin! I talk about the insane 50% off deal and sale for the Kent Trouvaille right now and compare it with the 2023 Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2, to help you decide which bike is the best bang for your buck, and the best value overall for mountain biking / trail riding and for commuting / road biking. Hope this helps you out!!

Update: You can actually purchase a warranty through Walmart for this bicycle, which covers the bike for 2-3 years. Prices can range from $60-$200 depending on the plan but they are offered through AllState.
Video of the "fixing/adjustment" part pleaseee and just how to do it in general :)
I was wondering if that would be a helpful video actually, I'll work on that!
I appreciate your enthusiasm and positivity in this video.
Aw thank you! I appreciate your comment :D
I got the trouvaille paid $400 more than a year ago, upgraded hydraulic breaks, 11-46t cassette, microshift 9x with clutch, BSA BB and oval chainring. Upgraded to a Marin Rift Zone XR but will always keep the Kent around as a project HT.
Great review 👍!
Thanks!
Another amazing suggestion!! Turns out I'm eyeballing a bike for my wife and this one looks perfect for the price. Thanks so much once again!!
You’re welcome!! For the sale price you can’t go wrong here for sure, glad it helped!
If you didn't snag one yo before they sold out and got discontinued
New target exclusive Kent Enclave at 439
Giordano (kent brand) valor and intrepid in the 589-649 range
Ozark trail ridge 399
Poseidon norton 699
Those would be my recommendations for a bike under 1k
@@PghMtbRidesI already have 2 bikes
XO T-Type Transmission
Industry Nine Enduro S Hydra front and rear
Maxxis Dissector front and rear
Pike Ultimate 140
SRAM Maven
PNW dropper, mechanical with WTB Rocket
Crank Bros Stamp 7
Tell me that wouldn’t be an amazingly quirky and awesome setup! 😁🔥🤙
Pure insanity and I love it 🤣
I saw it at Walmart yesterday must be a sign to go back and get it
Hahah nice!! Was it on sale at your store?
At $190 better act fast. If it was Simi valley CA, it's mine😉.
I would have been pissed to miss it as I've been watching it since I missed the axum clearance a year or two ago.
I'd been looking for a bike but I didn't want to pay $400.00!! Every time I go to walmart, I check the bikes. About 1 month ago, I was shopping and checked the bikes. The Kent Trouvaille was marked down to $127.00!! The associate told me the price was correct and they had 2 in stock. I took it home with me!! I started researching the bike and found that everyone who purchased one really liked it. Great reviews! I couldn't pass this deal up. The next day, I purchased the second one for my granddaughter! For $254.00, I purchased $800.00 worth of bikes! I love this bike! I'm in Bennettsville, SC.
That’s awesome!!! And I thought my deal was good, that’s just crazy!
im guessing many people did the same as I cannot find this bike at Walmart.
Just got mine for 190.00 plus tax. I love it and have 7 more bikes but only one from Walmart . Can't beat the price.
Nice!! Hahaha same here
Got trek 5 what exeserys shuld i use
There was probably only one near me at $318 as it was only in one store in my area-ish at $318. It was unavailable for me locally after I purchased at $190 on March 1st.
Of course my damn car died near walmart and needed a 30 mile tow home, and it seems I dropped my spy"s in the tow truck. But they were uncomfortable sunglasses and the $190 bike makes up for it.
Seems a poor time for bike clearance with spring around the corner but WM has it's ways.
Still have to put the wheels back on and get it on the stand for tuning, but she looks good and I'm happy to finally see a clearance deal on a trouvaille or axum.
That’s awesome that you found the deal at your Walmart too, glad you were able to get it!
What saddle do you have on the Marlin 5?
It’s the Bontrager commuter comp saddle, just feel like it’s more comfortable than the arvada that comes with the bike
@@TalalipopMTB thanks bro!
I cant find one in my area and they dont seem to ship..hopefully i will find a used one someday :)
The kent trouvaille is now discontinued,
The better versions, Giordano valor abd Intrepid are still available (id gl for the intrepid)
Theres also a new (target exclusive) Kent Enclave at 439..
Not sure in the geo.
I purchased once to check out the geo..but not 100% sure if Target will let me return if i build it out the box (not assembled)
So i may just return it lol
Poseidon norton ks probably better deal out of everything mentioned.
@@PghMtbRides Thank you I will check out the Poseidon
@@GarG64 yeah with the sale j rhink its the best route due to 65° HTA, 75° STA, abd thru axle on both ends
But Giordano intrepid imo has the best looking frame...QR on the rear though, thru axle non boost front
Suntour cross country XC forks start with the XCE which is OEM only , then XCT and then XCM. Admittedly you can have different options within those types from Suntour but on face value that Trek fork is much weaker and lower spec than the walmart bike. However it will be heavier because it has much stronger 30mm stanchions compared to the 28mm stanchions on the Trek. Does the walmart bike actually have a proper freehub or is it a freewheel? I assume the Trek is definitely a freehub but unsure about the walmart bike. I do know in the UK the entry level Trek Marlin is very low quality with a freewheel, 21 speed drivetrain and cable disc brakes yet costs £500 I think. Stores like Halfords in the UK will offer a real hardtail mountain bike with decent parts for the price Trek offers a junk pretend mountain bike.
The Trek Marlin in this video does have the XCE28, but that’s because mine is a 2020 Trek marlin 5. The 2023 version of that bike does come with the XCT30 which is more comparable to the XCM, but you’re right about the XCE not being as good. And the walmart bike surprisingly has a freehub and a cassette just like the marlin
@@TalalipopMTB Thats fair enough, is the weight comparison fair then are you comparing the weights when they both have 30mm stanchion forks? Also XCT is still one level down depending on options fitted.
Yes the weights were for the 2023 marlin 5 and this kent trouvaille, so both with 30mm stanchion forks. I used a basic weight scale so it could be more accurate. And yeah from my experience XCM seems better as well, the one on the trouvaille should come with a negative spring to prevent as much jerking too which is great
The kent has a cassette (no cheap freewheel)
Finally, there is another factor I forgot that you should have included and that comes to the warranty. For $20-30 you can purchase a 2-3 year warranty for any Walmart bike. And when you call it in, Walmart will just refund you your money. You don’t even have to return it. It happened to me a couple years ago. I just used that money and fixed and upgraded the bike. That’s what the Allstate rep (they run Walmart’s warranty) told me the purpose of it is.
Oh wow that’s actually pretty good! I’ll mention that in a pinned comment for other people as well. Thanks for the info!
Kent Trouvile wheels prob need to be upgraded for trail riding non branded rims tend to crack or buckle on midsize jumps. Cant believe Trek dont give you a tapered headtube on any of their bikes till you spend $1000 though but you can get tapered head on a $200 Kent.
The $190 trouvaille is a clearance price at a retail giant. It's normal price is $400.
But yes, it's a fair thing to expect in a $600 bike.
That said, most changes to bike design are done for profits rather than innovation and the only thing wrong with straight ht is that there's less fork options, which is less of an issue with a lower end bike as there are as many options as one would realistically need.
I had and beat the living shit out of a Giordano Intrepid for months, no issues with the wheels..
Intrepid is pretty much just a pit the box upgraded trouvellie
You didn’t go over shift levers, brake levers, or the warranty difference. Trek cost more cause they use the same level of components across the bike. They also give a lifetime warranty on the frame and two years for the components. While the Kent doesn’t look/sound like a bad bike, how is the average person going to get replacement parts or service their bike? Does Kent have a website or store you can purchase said parts for and are their parts proprietary? Need more info.
Nah not proprietary anything, the frame can be upgraded just as easy as any other hard tail
@@nite760 cool. Thanks for letting me know.
@@xXxZyloxXx had to replace derailer hanger and was not able to find any direct replacement from their website but was able to match based on comparing Internet images. Found the derailer hanger on Amazon for cheap. Biggest upgrade hurdle would be upgrading to a decent fork due to the wheel set being quick release and most upgrades would be for boost through axel. So I would have to upgrade the front wheel at least which I haven't been willing to do yet lol
@@nite760 if you are like me it seems we fall into the most expensive hobbies lol.
Curious, how tall are you?
I'm around 5'7" - 5'8"
Did they stop making it?
Yes, kent took it off their site
Kent also released a target exclusive Kent Enclave bike for 439
If you plan to upgrade, its not a big deal about some of the down grades from the trouvaille such as bolt on wheels , 2 bolt stem, and grip shifter,
@@PghMtbRides why stop making it
@@manolos8230 no idea, egen if they are replacing it with a other worthy replacement. Still should of kept it...
Theres plenty of other kent bikes that should of got discontinued way before the trouvaille.
@@PghMtbRidesso what’s the other bike then
Have u heard of norco ?
Yes! But haven’t ridden any of their bikes or done much research on them personally
@@TalalipopMTB I have norco 2 and I have trek marlin 4 gen maybe down the road I’ll get like a 7 or better
Nice! How do you like the Norco in comparison?
@@TalalipopMTBnorco has a smaller sprocket ⚙️ so it’s better tbh but I still like my Marlin I ride it more I only been on my norco 2 times
@@TalalipopMTBand I only got trek Marlin 4 gen 2 wish I had gotten 7 at least I got it on sale
I would have purchased the Walmart bike in my early 20s. Today, in my 50s, I own Specialized, Norco and Yeti MTBs…I learned how to ride properly without killing myself, on $400 bikes in my 20s! The only negative for both bikes, they are made in China 🇨🇳. We who are Americans need to quickly wean ourselves on buying stuff made in China. The profits go to strengthen their national security apparatus 😊
Can u still buy it?
Not through walmart nor r kent anymore, it i did see a seller on AliExpress
@@PghMtbRides dang
Some walmarts may still have it in stock, but it sold out at my local walmarts after I made this video
@@TalalipopMTB I checked when like last week and my local Walmart is sold out to

Must have ditched your job at Trek?!? LOL!
hahaha I was actually let go in December of 2022 so haven’t worked there in a while
@@TalalipopMTB onward and upward Talalipop!
Hahaha :D I hope so!
Kent trouvellie is discontinued...Walmart has it on clearance for 190..now out of stock...Kent took it off the site
There is now a new Kent Enclave, but it's a target exclusive...439, it's a downgrade due to components...twist shifter, bolt on wheels, 2 bolt stem
Geo is different, but not sure if it's still trail geo or if it's XC geo....I'll find out soon
Bike comes also in large no?
Yes it does but for some reason that one was not on sale at Walmart, only the medium one
LOL. No, just no.
Trouvaille is dead now, Kent has stopped selling it
I just bought one .... for 190 $ like 10 min ago.....
Also, Walmart bikes are not assembled by Walmart employees. They contract out to bike mechanics. It’s just they usually give the comtract to the lowest bidder and they have to assemble 80-120 bikes a week between 3-4 stores.
Oh I see, I heard Walmart stores used to have a designated assembler, but I think that was in the past.
@@TalalipopMTB well I guess it’s a designated assembler but it’s contracted out.
