In this episode, we break down the steps involved in how we tackle the rather difficult job of vacuum bagging the wet laminate join on the front beam of our boat. We discuss what is in our consumables stack and how to use pleats to overcome the challenges of vacuum bagging some complex geometry. There is a fair bit involved and it helps to know some tricks.     Excellent video thank you.....I am doing stuff on aircraft, and your system of working is very helpfull. I want to make a spinner.......that is going to be a challenge. The cowlings worked out very well. Good luck and fair winds.

    Getting perf film locally is difficult here in Florida (don't really have a good answer as to why). So, I've been VB all of my FG catamaran mods without it. In following the WS guides, they explain that you should use the least amount of pressure possible to achieve good bonding to prevent dry layers (clear as mud, eh?). I therefore make a small flat, test patch on some plastic next to my project. I then use the test patch (with the same layup) to give me a good idea of the time/temp/humidity effects on the kick times. After I think the epoxy is beginning to gel; I crank up the pressure on my pump to really pull hard. So far, really good results.
    So, I'm wondering what pressures you guys are using when you have the perf to use? -Thanks!

      Full vac with epoxy, is what we use.
      Full vac will not produce dry layers if the consumable stack is correct and the resin quantity is correct. Perf plastic is an important part of the process too make sure over bleeding of the resin doesn't happen.
      Some resins have problems with full vac, styrinated systems(poly and vinylester), and low grade epoxies (like west 105) suffer from solvent boilout. This was once upon a time thought to be dry layers. West 105 resin is designed as wood glue, it is not a laminating resin (but can be used for it).
      There are so many variables in a laminate and different circumstances when to use a product or not. Or how to use a product or not. Some times its just a case of using what you have available and making sure you get a good result.

      @@youngbarnacles I was just going to ask why don’t you place the breather right against the peel ply?
      I guess it to avoid total suction of the epoxy out of the carbon.

      @@youngbarnacles i did... i guess i watched all of your carbon vids because i would like to build a sort of canoe out of carbon fiber and other light material like innegra and basalt but i don't know how many layers i should use and can't find any information in the web about it. first i will make some testsheets but for calculations i would like to know how many layers i should approximately use... how many would you use, if you would make a canoe out of carbon fiber?

      What you are asking is more of an engineering question than a boat building question. What are you going to use the canoe for? How big do you intend to make it? That will then dictate whether it will be a monolithic or cored structure. Also using inegra or basalt is dependent on whether you're in flat water or need impact protection. You also need to work out what resin systems you will be using and whether you intend to use a mould or jig. These ultra light laminates tend to be more experience driven than engineering driven and there is not a lot of information available on the web. I have a lot of experience in ultra light laminates for smaller racing racing boats, and could work out a laminate schedule for you based on my experience. As this is actually considered my day job and there would be a fair bit of work involved it would have to be something I'd charge for. If you want to do it all yourself, figure out what you want to use the canoe for and what the parameters will be and that will dictate what materials you use.
