Did this task on a much bigger scale working at Janicki Industries just to the North in Sedro Woolley but we typically did infusions instead. Super satisfying when it goes right but there's many little tricks of the trade that can be learned to make it go smoother. Good luck on your boat!

For "typical" small boat construction, can the appropriate closed cell foam material be used? Does this technique require vacuum bagging?
Does this reduce cost and weight over using conventional wood materials?

Small boats, yes. I wouldn’t use closed cell with anything bigger than a 25hp.

This is one of the few videos of vacuum bagging with Polyester resin, I assume one of the issues is the resin catalyzing before the vacuum can be pulled, have you had any problems?

I personally haven’t had any issues but I am sure that can be an issue. I know with the coring bond putty I am going to use is very precise in measurements and is 50-55 minutes before it catalyzes. The span is every 2 degrees and it changes the time to catalyze. I think just having everything ready and hooked up before and know you’re ready is the best way to go. This transom was pretty difficult since there wasn’t much room to lay the vacuum tape down which delayed the pull of the vacuum.

I've heard that vacuum bagging with polyester resin can be a fire hazard? Kind of bummed about that because I have 3 gallons waiting for a vacuum infusion process to build a kayak. Totalboat won't give me a straight answer. I've read the dangerous that the pump can ignite the polystyrene gas

I’ve never heard that or seen anything like that. I see people do it all the time with no issues!

@@LindellAdventures the problem I've heard on different boat building sites is that compressing polyester resin fumes turned it into polystyrene gas which is highly volatile. Even the manufacturer that sold it to me is now saying not to do it.

Such a small low stress type of repair why is all of this necessary? Is it just to show how to do it? Seems to me this repair could have been done with a paint brush and a plastic cup. I've been repairing boats using west system for years. The only time vacuum bagging was done was for building a super lightweight rowing shell, in a mold.

I guess I’m not really understanding the question. It’s just showing how to vacuum bag and using a transom as an example. Vacuum bagging is a good process for constant pressure and better pressure. Is that what you’re asking?

@@LindellAdventures you answered perfectly. As a demo on how to vacuum bag it was excellent. Ignorantly, my point was it seemed like overkill for such a minor low stress type repair.

Are you vacuuming down a thin layer of glass Bondo and if you can stretch the plastic a little tighter you can save materials money for the customer not trying to be a b****

It’s just the way we decided to do it. It’s not that hard expensive and to redo it when there isn’t enough, that’d be worse. It worked though!
