We are the youngbarnacles - a family of 5 living onboard our 1990 Catana42s and together we are modifying our vintage production catamaran into a modern performance cruiser. We are marine industry professionals who make a living working on high tech racing yachts and large performance multihulls.
When we are not working in a professional capacity, we spend our time sailing, exploring and improving our old Lock Crowther designed Catana42s. Our projects on Paikea include using recycled carbon fibre parts to modify our catamaran into a modern and fast liveaboard. Our channel showcases our experiences on Paikea as we live, work and sail onboard. We try to keep our videos educational, and like to include information on how we repair and upgrade our boat plus share tips on getting the most out of your own vessel.

WORKING WITH COMPOSITES | Paikea's Transom Extension
This short video is part of our Transom extension and removing old rudders video. If you have not seen the entire video you can check it out on our Sailing Paikea playlist or over on our website blog youngbarnacles.com/transom-extension-hull-preparation-for-paint-and-removing-old-rudders/
The transom extension was such a great project on Paikea. The addition of a step/platform to made entering and exiting the water easier and it also gave us something to step on and off from when getting in and out of our dinghy.
We have a full video that includes this section you can check out the link at the end of the video or here th-cam.com/video/7IndtywMSkM/w-d-xo.html

Repairing the crack in our starboard hull
มุมมอง 4.1K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
We have a large crack in the bottom of the starboard hull. It runs longitudinally from the engine room door to the entrance of the aft cabin. Honestly, it looks worse than it actually is, as Shayne had already repaired the hull from the outside when we did our first major upgrades in Valencia so there is no risk of water ingress or us sinking. It does, however, need to be fixed. Hauling out thi...
3D Printed Rudder Winglets for our Catamaran

We have a Bambu Lab X1 Carbon 3d printer onboard. It weighs 23kg and doesn't like humidity. So why do we have something so seemingly inappropriate on Paikea? What benefits could possibly outweigh the cost of the extra weight and space it takes up on board our tiny weight-sensitive floating home? youngbarnacles.com/3d-printed-rudder-winglets/ WEBSITE For more information you can find us at young...
Crack in the hull and asymmetric rudders - Barcelona refit begins

We have started our refit! Paikea is out of the water in Barcelona and Shayne is spending whatever spare minutes he has from America's Cup work to help the boys and me with work on our own boat. Harry takes us through what our plans are for the interior refit of Paikea. It is ambitious and a crazy amount of work especially since Shayne is busy with 60 hours a week in Americas' Cup world but if ...

Approaching the Azores on our Catana42
มุมมอง 3K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Continuing our journey from Saint Martin in the Caribbean to Barcelona, Spain. We are about to make landfall in the Azores! The island of Fayal is not far away and Paikea is dealing with big seas and a lot of breeze before the wind dies completely on our final day of passage. As soon as the wind dies and we are forced to turn our engines on for the last 24 hours before we make landfall, Shayne ...

I can't believe it took me a full 17 minutes to notice the cat chilling in its little hammock!
Nice now I know how to sail my gunboat 68.
Aren't they all using Torlon or some similar type of bearing and races that won't rust? I don't see why they would be using any ferrous material in these components.
First Gunboat video I have seen with verified boat speeds.
Curious what the solution to failed power / hydraulics is in the Gunboat? If you lose power, surely there must still be a manual way to control the sail plan?
Don't you need a ruff surface to make it stick better to the hull?
Putting glasfiber on metal will make it corrode faster.. You trap the moisture inside
Thanks as I brought out our 20-year-old kittywalk outdoor safe place for our girl the netting on it's last year as I bring it in during the winter but our girl loves it as it makes her feel safe. Just looking for replacement netting.
I now understand why no one seems to explain the reefing process - lots to know and do when putting in a reef. Everyone I've seen just says they do it without showing how. Many thanks.
Lovely, a cat is just like a sailing boat. Finaly a little technical demo! Thanks!
Wow! Looks Amazing! Great job. Inspiring.
Wow! Looks Amazing! Great job. Inspiring.
Can you Shane make a video about graphite/grafene bottom paint? As an anti fouling and able to reduce friction on water
How long did it take to cross the atlantic ? To America to France.
It looks like you did not put an aft bulkhead on that extension. Is the aft only fiberglass (monolithic) laminate?
There was no need for an additional aft bulkhead because we did not extend the waterline. The extension only squared up the aft transom to make a step/swimming platform. Paikea's structure is foam core with glass and this is why we did the repair with foam and glass. The old transom that we removed (the piece you see being cut out) was monolithic.
@@youngbarnacles that is very interesting to know about the original design. Thanks for sharing. Your video is really good.
You're welcome
Piece by piece it’s gonna be a new boat. Nice 👍🏻
flight of the concord’s? Lol! Will you guys please post more!
So what is the point of these extensions? They don't seem to extend the waterline much?
No it's not a waterline extension. Boat length remains the same. We wanted a step for easy access from water and dinghy onto the boat. The previous arrangement was terrible
How frustrating would it be to leave a tool in that void and glass it in
😂 now where did I put my......oh wait I remember where I was using it last....🥴
So how did you get the foam curved just right to line up perfectly?
It was heated and bent to shape
Great job can’t wait for the finished look

blast from the past?
Yeah. Putting some resources together and thought I may as well make it public.
@@youngbarnacles good man
You make it all look so easy yet I know for a fact it isn’t. If you were in SE Asia I would ask you to work on my boat as much as anything because I want to learn from you. For me you make the best videos on the internet 🙏
There's a lot of thinking and designing that goes into every job before I touch any tools. Stoked to hear you like the videos.
not only are you building your own chain plates ect BUT YOUR DOING IT ON THE BOAT AT SEA !!!!! now that's a REAL TRADESMAN
I'm still Binge watching and aren't up to where you gut the inside and replace with fibre glass ... great idea , forget keeping up with the Joneses s most do to create status but their not real sailors unlike you 5. keep them coming
Thanks for the informative video. For those of us who can't splash out $2000 for couple of dyneema nets, what are the second best options on the budget in terms of keeping the net stable (not squishy or bouncy) and as tight as possible? I've heard people had good experience with generic knotless nets (like those for golf and fishing and various industrial purposes) - some reported 12 years in salty UV conditions, and cost them less than £100. Cheers!
I was sceptical at first about spending so much money on trampoline netting but Shayne was adamant about it. I have to admit that he was right (🙄🤫 omg don't let him see that comment 😅) I'm yet to see anything comparable to our dyneema netting. Yes it's expensive but we are years down the track now and it still looks and feels as good as the day we installed it. th-cam.com/video/M7BBDdhfVL4/w-d-xo.html
should make a new retaining clip with the 3D Printer
Aha! That's a good idea
should have got a piece of marine ply and layer across the dingy to give you more support when standing and putting the net in
would love to see you do the process of making something with the 3D Printer .... I just can't get my head around what you start with , I'm an oldie 71
I will film one of the projects from start to finish for you. I'll find something that everyone will be interested in watching but it may take a while before I can get it up on the channel. Glad you are enjoying the videos
@@youngbarnacles WoW !! appreciate it just a small question .... will you ever sail to Fremantle as I'm in Perth and have a fair few tools you may want free as im selling up and moving to thailand to see my last years out ... battery /electric makita , bosh multi tool and accessories new ,hot air gun new... they may help in your quest , be good to see them go to someone who appreciates it most have only been used a few times , house goes on the market in June
Allan Bonds Winged KEEL
🤣
GEEZ !! those 3D Printers are worth their weight in gold , back in my day one only had a HB Pencil and a Wooden ruler with the times table on it ha , ha , ha. ... how things have changed
Shayne you mentioned a locking headboard for the mainsail that locks open, which manufacturer was that? Does the video on your site show what you use to secure turnbuckles?
Do you mean the "pull to engage" locking system that we have on Paikea? There isn't anything good for smaller yachts/cats out there. Shayne custom made ours. Rigging Projects make them for much bigger boats but do not make anything smaller for cruising vessels. Antal has tried to do something but it isn't very successful and we wouldn't recommend it. Same with Harkens attempt. In terms of securing turnbuckles we use M4 cap head bolt(screws) with ny-lock nuts. These go in the thread ends of the turnbuckles instead of split rings. We cover them in this video here th-cam.com/video/mNXejSmeEE8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=SVuimy9Q5KVAx47J
@@youngbarnacles So there's not an off the shelf item, but only custom solutions. The one word I didn't search for turnbuckle in your video list. Thank you for the information and link.
Correct. No good solution for smaller cruising yachts unless you go custom.
the young fellas would never be able to get life lessons at a school , keep them on the water where they will be as good as Dad and as good as mum sewing !! What a team
Geez!! those 2 damaged hulls were a shocking repair , makes one wonder , why try to save money if you can't do it yourself , should have got a tradesman like yourself
my ex's uncle owned and raced Syd to Hobart back in the 80's/90's I forgot his name but he owned Frazers Wood Yard in Sydney
some serious $$$$'s in those 2 race Yachts
that's a decent crack in the hull
your Yacht is going to be better than a HH Gunboat
Just like a bought one

amazing how much the C/Plate Bolts moved , would never believe they moved this much without seeing , cheers ... top video
Thanks mate. Glad you enjoyed the video
you definitely would not have been a Weetie Stacker at Woolworths !! .... a head full of knowledge there that's for sure , I'm learning a lot
Professor
My experience after 11atlantic crossings is that gaff rig is easier.i will be selling my seacracker 33 when I return to the UK and getting another gaffer.also a hollow leech and no battens would be better for long distant sailing
Great video. Thanks. We have just had the standing rig renewed on our Belize. I now feel much better equipped to check it once we have done some miles.
On the martingale tensioning, to make adjusting easier rather than letting off the shrouds, bring a halyard down to each bow and grind them up tight before making adjustments. Much easier.
Great video Shayne. Love your content and how your whole family is involved with the boat projects. Your kids will be absolute Pros 🙏👍
Thanks mate
You mentioned the sag in the forestay. Does the furler / foil prevent it from being tightened/straightened? Should one consider loosening and tightening depending on the conditions?
The foil is independent of the forestay and does not influence the sag other than the added weight. We do not adjust forestay tension as that will affect the rake in the mast. On a racing boat you can change the settings depending on conditions but not on a cruising catamaran.
Thanks for doing this detail, very few videos go to this length , yet it is so important to have the rig "right". I would be interested to know the rake on Pikea,s mast in t he video it looks well aft ? As the owner of a non standard cat without rig specs I am keen to learn what is optimum rake ? Rig tuning and SU tuning are my favourite sports !
Paikea's rake was definitely too far aft to start with as we reused the forestay from the old mast which was slightly too long. We ended up shortening the forestay in Saint Martin. There is a great rigging shop there which we would recommend. We have a video talking about mast rake here - th-cam.com/video/jaCivOaCi4Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=gsv5WMIYGLk5YtdH There is no magic formula for optimum rake on a boat. Basically the rake in the mast moves the centre of effort around so it relies on a lot of contributing factors. For example, it is influenced by the size and shape of sails you are using. It also depends on your rig shape and stiffness. It also depends on where the rig is located on the vessel. Lots of factors to consider.
Are the new bearings merely trichloroethylene induced in a suitable epoxy resin? It’s great that your children are learning about maintainance on a boat.
