We are the youngbarnacles - a family of 5 living onboard our 1990 Catana42s and together we are modifying our vintage production catamaran into a modern performance cruiser. We are marine industry professionals who make a living working on high tech racing yachts and large performance multihulls.
When we are not working in a professional capacity, we spend our time sailing, exploring and improving our old Lock Crowther designed Catana42s. Our projects on Paikea include using recycled carbon fibre parts to modify our catamaran into a modern and fast liveaboard. Our channel showcases our experiences on Paikea as we live, work and sail onboard. We try to keep our videos educational, and like to include information on how we repair and upgrade our boat plus share tips on getting the most out of your own vessel.

As most of you already know, Shayne and I work professionally in the marine industry. I try to get a regular video up to share with our friends on TH-cam once a week to keep the channel growing but I'm going to be honest - it is REALLY hard to be working, homeschooling 3 teenage kids and putting quality content regularly on the Tube. Sometimes we just have to concentrate on paying to LIVE THE D...

Repairing the crack in our starboard hull
มุมมอง 4.9K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
We have a large crack in the bottom of the starboard hull. It runs longitudinally from the engine room door to the entrance of the aft cabin. Honestly, it looks worse than it actually is, as Shayne had already repaired the hull from the outside when we did our first major upgrades in Valencia so there is no risk of water ingress or us sinking. It does, however, need to be fixed. Hauling out thi...
3D Printed Rudder Winglets for our Catamaran

We have started our refit! Paikea is out of the water in Barcelona and Shayne is spending whatever spare minutes he has from America's Cup work to help the boys and me with work on our own boat. Harry takes us through what our plans are for the interior refit of Paikea. It is ambitious and a crazy amount of work especially since Shayne is busy with 60 hours a week in Americas' Cup world but if ...

Beautiful boat. Too bad it's without a motor.😢😢😢
It's got 2 electric ones!
@ They won't help during the transatlantic
Regarding the PLA core, is epoxy capable of gluing fiberglass to the plastic?
Yes with proper preparation it can be done but it does have some limitations.
You had it hauled out but did not show if you faired the keel/hull joint that looked pretty non-racy.
No the refit was done later on Slovenia. This haul out was just for servicing electric propulsion
It’s my dream to sail around the world
Generally speaking if you were to increase tension on both side stays that increases mast bend (assuming aft-swept shrouds)? And so the forward triangles are just to get that balance right? Great video, going to start paying more attention to the rigging and angles on various boats I get on
Miss you guys. Love the DNAF1
Just a little extra to make sure it kicks off right before I finish!😅
😅😅 yup ... 🤪
Hola amigos. I am constantly bumping my noggin on the door. Why not make the door ways taller? Seeing the holes in your bulkhead made me smile cause I’ve got the same ones in Swift. I have plans to fill them in too.
Ha! Yeah we've discussed making doorways bigger. Since these are for the engine room we've left them as is. We may change the doorways throughout the rest of the boat. We don't intent to put too many doors back in to Paikea as they are heavy. Just engine room and toilet doors. The rest will be dividers probably made of sailcloth
Heavy. Yes. We just remade our engine room doors too. Not carbon but epoxy. They are like super light now. 👌
Perfect! Nice work mate
Nice to see I’m not the only one itching from all the fiberglass dust 😅. It’s been a one month slog of cutting out all the old wood and glass in my 2 lockers in front of my mast. Water had gotten under the wood and rotted a lot of it. I managed to get vinyl ester resin which is so much nicer to work with than polyester which even finds its way through latex gloves. I also choose flocoat instead of paint. Catana used a shitty grey paint that just peels everywhere it’s put after a few years. Happy to just have finished this so we can get back to cruising…
We feel your pain! What vintage Catana? The consolation is that it's worth restoring these old girls as they certainly don't make them like they used to 👍
@@youngbarnacles mine is a 2009 C47. Hull no 1 which is a vinylester boat with carbon crosses in the bulkhead fiberglass structures. I think on hull no 12 they went to full carbon/foam bulkheads etc, why they cheap’ed out on marine ply wood and paint in the front lockers I am yet to understand.
Our Richard Woods cat had a rope drum steering system. Ropes passed under the bridgedeck to the external tillers on aft decks. Very low tech but worked well. If it's just the helm pump leaking at the joint (O-ring hose fittings or flare?),
O - ring mating surface issues here on Paikea. And yes agree totally that the simplest solutions are often the best.
@@youngbarnacles Remove and try re-surfacing in a mill (assuming flat face type)?
@evangatehouse5650 we could try that but we're rebuilding an old system we're not in love with 🤷🏻♀️ It's all going to depend on time and availability of parts. Personally I'm keen to get rid of the hydraulic oil component ...
@@youngbarnacles Find a nice old Whitlock, replace the steel torque tubes with carbon versions?
Thank you for your post.
Brilliant, as always. I can't wait to see the conversion of the steering. Getting feedback from the helm is important.
So important! And equally important we have a simple reliable system on board.
You must be stoked with Balthasar's performance in the middle sea race, looked like it got a bit willing out there at times. Cheers for the vid.
They did good huh? We have a few things to sort out on board then put them on a ship for Caribbean season.
Very informative, thank you. It's nice to see the boys enjoying the catamaran sailing.
They are loving it!
yay welcome back have you given any thought to using outboards instead of diesel engines, I've seen some cats and 12m monos using them as main propulsion system aside from sails of course, would like to hear ead your opinion on it
We would not have outboards on Paikea. There are two main reasons for this. First outboards use petrol and not diesel. Petrol is more volatile than diesel so it is undesirable to carry around onboard the boat. Secondly, in emergency situations outboards are terrible in a sea state. Inboard engines tend to be better placed in order to deal with waves etc and stay in the water. However if you had a coastal boat then outboards would be a great option. There are massive advantages in being able to take them out and take to a mechanic if there is a problem. So we like the idea of outboards but retro fitting something to Paikea without it being a massive undertaking and solving the problems I've mentioned above aren't worth the exercise for us.
@@youngbarnacles yeah i see your pinky, about that wavy segment -i think you misunderstood me, i meant inboard outboard, basically installed in a well
Outboards placed in wells would be the solution we would use if we were to go down the outboards on Paikea route. However there are lots of technical challenges with that. We built a fully solar electric boat this way and we still had cavitation issues around the outboard engines when they were in the water (not a lot but more than desirable). We also had issues with getting the hole plugs to work properly on the outboard leg when outboard went up and down. With the move towards diesel outboards this option is becoming a more viable option to consider.
“And this very precise dose of catalyst to ensure that this will go off just before I’m done” 😂😂 yup… I’ve been having pretty decent results diluting flowcoat with acetone to achieve a smoother finish with fewer brush strokes. Any thoughts on this? have always wondered if I’m compromising the curing process by doing that as I’m not equipped to test hardness of the cured product ? Also big fan of the doorframes, did you have access to a mould or make your own?
Don't dilute with acetone Tom!!! I learnt this the hard way. Yes you can away with it but it does affect the final product. The best practice is to use styrene monomer as a thinning agent. You don't need much as it is very effective. We made a mould for the door frames
@@youngbarnacles cheers I had a sneaking suspicion what I was doing wasn’t really kosher.. will try to see if I can source the styrene monomer locally.. incidentally the one you show in the video almost looks like it’s from WIND the composites supplier here? Great work on the doorframes they look awesome, what did you make the mould out of? Any clips of the process? Either way great to see that work on Paikea is back on track, seems like we are in fairly similar phases of the refits so will be interesting to see how you go about it :)
😂 Like drawing blood from a stone! You're doing a good job...😊

Thanks for posting.
You're welcome
Great explanation on difference between flowcoat and gelcoat. I slowed it down to 50% and typed it into my "boat projects" note pad file thank you.
Fantastic 😊
😁
Glad you’re back, you were missed!
Thanks guys
Another NASA level boat project !
Got a heap of carbon bits to glue on to the boat. Should be a rocket ship if we can get it all done 👍
Thanks for sharing your knowledge buy this chanel, it is always a treat when you are on air! your knowledge are impressive!
Thanks. Glad you are enjoying the content
@@youngbarnacles I always do, I used to be some type of "professional" in the boatrepair bussines but I do not think I was anymore after watching you chanel, I was obviosly always an amateur.
🤣 we are all learning... and the thing we love about this industry is the advances in technology and the opportunity to apply this to our own cruising boat.
Great video! Have you already made any positive or negative experiences you can share with us?? I‘m just before starting my ruder refit due to water inside of it and I was wondering if I should add some winglets as well, as I‘m re-laminating the outside as well. I thought of using symmetrical surf keel fins from the surf industry, as my boat is 27“ monohull only. Do you think this could work,??? And is there a specific angle the winglets should be mounted? Any lifting moment to be included or simply 90 degree towards the ruder and straight direction of the forward speed direction?? (Hope you‘ll understand what I mean eventhough my English is not the best). Keep on the great work you’re doing. Thanks!
Your videos are awesome- so educational! For a 50 foot catamaran with an 85 mm2 mainsail, what are the pros and cons of blocks attached to webbing loops for reef points 1 and 2, versus perhaps a block at the luff and low friction ring at leech? I guess I am curious about pros/cons of using blocks vs LFR, e.g. friction in system, reefing line chafe, etc. Thanks!!!
Low friction rings are good for high loaded and slow, low moving parts so you wouldn't use it on a mainsheet as it is a high loaded and high movement part. Basically don't use them on sheets. However something like a reef line is a high loaded low movement part so a low friction ring would be suited to this application.
I didn't see where the carbon was wetted with resin. Maybe you didn't show it.
This was just showing vacuum bagging process. We have a lot of videos on different carbon lamination techniques
How did you draw out the first template?
Shayne is a yacht designer. He uses Solidedge software for all his designs
@@youngbarnacles thank you so much!
I've just accepted a massive project on a 34' Gemini up here in the Midwest US. (Detroit and Chicago) this video has given me a ton of piece of mind that I can get this bulkhead replaced.
Good luck
@youngbarnacles thank you! I have a quick question: how did you make the paper trace that you cut the foam to?
Just excelent!
Thanks
Thanks so much for sharing all the details. I had a tri with a 60’ wing mast. (SPIRIT) Jason Gard bought it) The biggest problem was chaffing and the tightening of all lines leading back to the cockpit as the mast rotated. How do you prevent this?
Yes it's tricky and all about getting your geometry correct. It is probably a good idea for a video. It's a pity I can't share photos here.
Just saw and realized you dont have spreaders...interesting..
Correct. No spreaders. We talk about that in our Paikea tour videos
Thanks. Could you have cleaned up with a wire / nylon brush? I would have cleaned with styrene, then prime with resin thinned with styrene, when it starts to go tacky apply the cloth. And finish off with Peelply
You forgot to tell us what wetpreg is
If you soak those ragged edges in epoxy before sanding, the epoxy does soak in, so not all wasted. Add a bit of bog (filler) before Peelply, then if you need to sand, you are not sanding away good fibre.
Hey guys. Glad to hear from you. Sounds like you are living life. All the ups and downs. Excellent. Go Shayne and Anna Go! Always rooting for you.
That video should be a classroom study on the psychologists open display of tact and diplomacy v’s frustrated talented engineer who feels he has been made to do something when he feels he has better things to do 🤷🏼♂️ Very interesting and enjoyable for me and I always learn something from you guys so thank you 🙏 I look forward to the day the pedal comes off the metal and you can get on with fitting out and enhancing your own boat and starting to enjoy yourselves. I see the French have since been knocked out so something was wrong there. Great sailors but OMG the arrogance 🤷🏼♂️
The condition of the bulkhead where the port chainplate was bolted was interesting
Phew, I was getting a bit worried there - so good to see you guys back!!! Love the channel and your insights into the cruising (or not as the case may be!) world. Very interesting insights into the Gunboats too... I'd have either!
Amazing :) Could you describe the design process?
A good suggestion for a later video - thanks
Hey, you're back! Glad to see you again. Shame about the Cup team, but looking forward to what you get up to with the Gunboat.
Super informative ... thanks
yay, glad to see you back
oh cool waterproof zipper for jib fairlead. New idea to me. I'm very surprised the French team favored offshore/IMOCA people. Totally different to inshore racing. I'm sure the Gunboat would be fine for the family if you had a paid crew to clean and maintain full time :)
Great to have you back on TH-cam
Orient Express first to exit the America's Cup campaign. Guess we can see how those "cultural differences" paid off. Looking forward to future videos and your expert commentary.
not surprised you cant stand up with a bunch of frogs; they think they are unique and best on everything they do all seasoned with the stupid bureaucracy and manners surrounding the french world. being working for french companies i know very well what im saying
great to see you back
