Vacuum pump setup for lamination of carbon fiber and fiberglass | Ep. 12

  • In this video we setup our vacuum pump for laminating carbon fiber and fiberglass in a vacuum.
Sourcing something like this in Fiji was impossible so we created our own setup using a normal vacuum pump that you'd find in a fridge or air conditioning and combining some other components to make it fit for our purpose. It needs a little tweaking but overall this is an economic way to realise a professional wet layup in a vacuum.

Caio! We are Timo and Jo, an Italian and English couple with countless ocean miles under our belts, including sailing half way around the world from Europe to Fiji!
Last year we bought an Open 66 ft race sailing boat originally designed and built by the famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa. He raced her in the 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), coming 5th and becoming the first non-frenchman to finish the race.
We are currently in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we'll need to make both dog and baby proof! We're planning to set sail again in Oct 2022, so with limited time&money we have plenty of challenges ahead to turn our dreams into reality&get back on the water!

Your gauge is measuring the vacuum inside the pump witch is not made to hold it when off. Switch the gauge to the other side of the valve and you will measure the Vacuum in the bag and test vacuum leaks provided you close the valve before turning the pump off

Thanks yes you are very right, a couple of people have mentioned this to us, and we’ve switched it now and it works much better thank you!

You have a very interesting project on your hands! Regarding the vacuum setup, wouldn't it be better to have the vacuum guage on the bag side of the ball valve? Also, vacuum regulator valves can be expensive. But McMaster-Carr in the US has one adequate for your purposes at a reasonable price. The PVC water hose you are using for vacuum hose will work. But polyethylene hose is more rigid and much less expensive, which matters if you need a long run from the pump to the vacuum bag. I look forward to seeing your project progress.

These are really great tips thank you so much! Is the regulator valve you mentioned the top one on this link? www.mcmaster.com/vacuum-regulators/

That is one determined lad! He wants those cables and the computer----probably to do prep work on his own sailboat, eh?
