  • This short video is part of our Transom extension and removing old rudders video. If you have not seen the entire video you can check it out on our Sailing Paikea playlist or over on our website blog youngbarnacles.com/transom-ex...
    The transom extension was such a great project on Paikea. The addition of a step/platform to made entering and exiting the water easier and it also gave us something to step on and off from when getting in and out of our dinghy.
    We have a full video that includes this section you can check out the link at the end of the video or here • Transom extension and ...

    Can you Shane make a video about graphite/grafene bottom paint? As an anti fouling and able to reduce friction on water

    So how did you get the foam curved just right to line up perfectly?

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It was heated and bent to shape

    It looks like you did not put an aft bulkhead on that extension. Is the aft only fiberglass (monolithic) laminate?

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      There was no need for an additional aft bulkhead because we did not extend the waterline. The extension only squared up the aft transom to make a step/swimming platform. Paikea's structure is foam core with glass and this is why we did the repair with foam and glass. The old transom that we removed (the piece you see being cut out) was monolithic.

      @@youngbarnacles that is very interesting to know about the original design. Thanks for sharing. Your video is really good.

    So what is the point of these extensions? They don't seem to extend the waterline much?

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No it's not a waterline extension. Boat length remains the same. We wanted a step for easy access from water and dinghy onto the boat. The previous arrangement was terrible

    How frustrating would it be to leave a tool in that void and glass it in

      You make it all look so easy yet I know for a fact it isn’t. If you were in SE Asia I would ask you to work on my boat as much as anything because I want to learn from you. For me you make the best videos on the internet 🙏

      There's a lot of thinking and designing that goes into every job before I touch any tools. Stoked to hear you like the videos.
