One minor correction the cable that comes from the battery to the mounting screw on the starter’s outer chassis is a negative not a positive.

The wire that comes from the battery is a positive that mount to the solenoid the one that mounts to the stud is a negative block ground

Your explanation made it very easy for me to remove the starter from the 1.4. I focus on the 13mm top bolt from top of engine bay. Next I removed the bottom 13mm from top of engine bay also. Pulled it lose and removed both wires from top side. No need to get under the car. Very easy from top.

Thank you for the vid. Always helpful for someone to accurately explain how to get to each bolt. - Just a little clarification though, that cable is the negative cable not positive. (not crucial info for the replacement but good to know) - thanks again.....Edit: I just realized if you give something for viewers to comment on, like calling a negative cable a positive cable, you can get extra comments for free :D great plan.

It took me 1 hour 20 minutes from opening the hood to starting the car and closing the hood.
    Tools:
    10mm deep socket
    13mm deep socket
13mm shallow socket - for the aluminum bolt
Ratcheting wrench, 6 to 9 inches long, with lots of teeth. I got a harbor freight one with 72 teeth for $11. My craftsman wrench (did not use) had 8 teeth, and there were some spots where I could only move the HF wrench 3 teeth.
A stubby extension 6 inches long. Longer and it won’t fit behind the alternator, shorter and it won’t clear the starter solenoid. It only gets used with the aluminum bolt.
    Order of operations is helpful.
Take the 10mm bolt off the solenoid, it will have the only skinny wire. Remove it’s wire.
Take off the 13mm bolt from the solenoid, remove its wire. once the wire is removed it gets in the way of the 10mm bolt, hence why that was first.
Take off the bottom 13mm nut, wire, bolt.
Since all of the wires are disconnected, it is easier to get to the last bolt. Put the shallow 13mm and extension together, and figure out their placement while looking at the bolt. Put the wrench on the extension, and loosen the bolt. Finish taking it out with your fingers.
Before you put the new starter in, take a picture of the face you are going to put it in.
Put the bottom bolt in first, you can feel the whole with a finger. Finger thread it on.
Now finger thread the top bolt in.
Now it is reverse of operations.

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders Thank you for your video. I brought to the dealer and asked for a price on how much it would cost to get them to install a starter motor. I had already replaced the relevant relay. They told me it was going to be about $930. 180 for the diagnostic on why it wouldn't start, (bad starter motor or solenoid), $200 for the starter motor, and the rest for labor.
I bought the starter motor and paid their diagnostic fee so I could get my key back, then installed it with your instructions. I think that the next most complex bit of car repair I have ever performed was replacing the spark plugs and the battery.

Replaced the starter, everything was good for a couple of days. Was hopeful the problem was solved. Then went out one day and it wouldn't start. Had to unplug the negative battery terminal to get it to charge. Got it charged, the dash panel said the voltage was at 15. Started the car. Went out the next day and no dash lights or anything would even come on. Do I have a bad cable? Or a short in the negative or positive somewhere? How would I go about figuring this out?

I was about to get everything but the Mount bolt off. The reason being is that I have the Dorman intake manifold and there is an extended back on it. Sadly, due to that I had no way to get the billy out without removing the whole Intake manifold, which when I went to do it I stripped one of the bolts 😢. So now I have to contend with correcting that before reattemped this

Thanks for watching & we are happy the video helped. That’s odd... Has the vehicle experienced any front end or side damage in recent years? If yes, it’s possible that the vehicle is not perfectly aligned which leads to your leak.
If not, you may need to replace upper foam seal to recreate the water right seal.

Thanks for the reply & it’s probably best to replace box. It might be a “Dealership Only” part... meaning you can’t get it at AutoZone... you’ll need to visit your local Chevy dealership to purchase new part.

No worries... your local Chevy dealership will ask for your last eight digits of your VIN #. They will be able to pull up the exact animated diagram of the engine compartment and all systems.
After explaining the part to them they should know the exact part and pull it up on the computer.
The most important thing is the last eight digits of your VIN # which allows them to pull up the exact replacement part for your exact vehicle!

I realize the colours and the importance of them, but you haven't answered my question? You had mentioned about a positive cable that was secured by the one 13 mm nut that had a bolt that secured the starter to the engine. this cable that was secured by the 13 mm nut , was this the negative cable or the positive cable??? Its just securing the cable to the engine not necessarily bolting to the starter?

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders
      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for watching, the black cable to batter is your negative, red cable is your positive.
As the cable feeds off the battery, it gets wrapped into connection with the wiring that feeds electrical power to the starter.
