Thanks for the update, that’s no fun. Sounds like re-securing the radiator sensor back in & locking it in place with the clip is the next step.
You will need to refill system with coolant. It sounds like the Thermostat didn’t do what it is supposed to do. Below is a link to a video that talks more about how to check if your Thermostat is faulty.
      th-cam.com/video/S0UisIciGu4/w-d-xo.html
This is becoming more & more common unfortunately...Cruze owners are replacing Thermostat only to find out that the new Thermostat is faulty.

I own a 2016 1.4L Cruze and its treated me very well. I've put MILES on this thing so I love it. Got it at 36k and she's now sitting at 113k miles. She's ran great, minus common coolant system issues. I'll list all of the repairs I've made over the years below. I looked up Chevy Cruze videos and some gave me the great tip of "getting ahead of common issues/repairs and replace parts early to avoid future headaches", which is a GREAT idea. It'll cost a bit to DO IT ALL at once so take your time. But believe me, you will be happy you did. As I said most have been for the coolant system and so far I've vvvvvvv
Replaced the reservoir with the new, better Dorman reservoir.
    Replaced EVAP Purge Valve
New lower radiator hose, the thick hose that feeds from the radiator into the thermostat.
    The thermostat itself.
    Oxygen sensors, upstream & downstream.
    Coil pack & spark plugs.
    New, bigger battery.
All very easy fixes. Annoying but easy.
Parts were all from Dorman, ACDelco & Murray companies.
All purchased at Autozone, O'Reilly's or Amazon.
All well under $100 each too.
I hope this helps you and other Chevy Cruze owners!

This is similar to my list. I think I need a thermostat, I did the coil pack, oxygen sensors, new battery (not bigger) and in addition both front bearings between 60k and 75k miles.
Curious, at any time did your radiator fan not turn on due to your thermostat issue, or did you ever notice the car was running 20-30˚ cooler?

Hey, I have a 2014 Chevy Cruze. It’s making a noise that i am not sure what is causing it. It sounds like one of the belts but I’ve been told so many things. I could be the pulleys, or the thermostat. But my check engine light isn’t on, nothing is leaking. Last year I had some of the leaks replaced in my car where a previous owner used aftermarket parts to temporarily fix the problem. I just need to know what to do.

Local garage quoted £310 to replace water pump and belt... I told them it wasn't the issue and the thermostat needed doing. I ended up doing the work myself with the help of your video. Inside, my thermostat had melted in places. Ended up costing me £55 and about 1-2 hours work (working slowly and carefully).

Its so terrible that dorman chinesium specials are engineered and manufactured better than an OEM part. This is not by accident if u ask me. Failed obsolescence is designed right into parts these days so you have to keep buying them. My parts from the 60s made in America are still working as good as the day they were made, 50 to 60 years later.

Thank you so much for this video. It was very detailed and thorough. The 5/16 star bolts on the thermostat are very difficult to access. The sensor on the intake is also difficult to remove if you don't know how. The tension clamp on the coolant hose is also difficult to work with. Your clear instructions helped immensely.
If you are going to attempt this seemingly simple repair, I suggest the following tools:
    - tiny socket ratchet set with a universal joint and extenders. You will need this because the angles and access to the bolts are maddeningly inaccessible.
    - use a small "regular" pliers to work with the hose clamp. It is very difficult to get a good angle, but needle nose pliers are not helpful

I've had so many random little problems with my Cruze from other coolant leaks to electrical. everything isn't very expensive to fix fortunately but i don't understand why GM goes so cheap on parts for the Cruze. Thanks for making this video and suggesting a competent replacement part.

FYI for anyone planning to do this on a Chevy Sonic with the same engine .... it's MUCH more of a pain in the ass but is still doable. The main issues are that the Cruze has a slightly larger engine bay so there's a bit more room to work around and the Sonic overflow/reservoir is located up front instead of back by the firewall. Because of this, the bottom hose from the reservoir goes across the front of the engine and back around the side making it perfectly in the way while you're changing this housing. There's also a hard AC line that's routed differently than the flexible AC hose you see in his video and it is also perfectly in the way. Even with unbolting the housing first, removing the lower coolant hose from the housing is a huge pain and honestly you're going to be better off replacing the factory clamp with a screwdriver style clamp once you do get it off. One more slight difference to note .... the clip holding the front hose on the thermostat housing comes off and goes on from the left side rather than from the top like the one on his Cruze in this video.

Sorry to hear you’re having trouble with your Cruze. How long ago did you replace Thermostat?
The reason we ask is because a disappointing significant amount of Cruze owners are experiencing a thermostat failure less than 2 years after replacing.
Did you install a thermostat from your Chevy dealership or did you install a Duralast from AutoZone, or Dorman?

I own a 2014 cruze Rs and about to recondition most of my heating and cooling system. Only thing I'm not doing is heater core, blend door actuators, and a new radiator and ac condenser and compressor. I own a cruze page and there alot of people who aren't very knowledgeable about cars. With that being said you make a very informative how to videos. One thing I want to recommend you get if you still own the cruze...well any newer car for that matter is buy a set of External torx sockets. For example..the bolts on the thermostat have those like many other parts on this car. If you use a regular socket, you will strip the bolt out. Please be smart and buy a cheap set of External torx sockets set from harbor freight. It will save you the headache later.

Also folks while your at it, change that reservoir cap as well where you put your antifreeze fluid in. Especially after you do a flush. I had a problem with my wife's cars reservoir. It would start boiling when engine would get to the warmed up temperature. The cheap cap has seals inside it that open and close and the seals can go bad over time which won't pressurize the system and allow air into it which makes the boiling. No you do not have a blown head gasket check your oil if you think so It will have a rainbow sheen to it or look like a milkshake. Pressure in the system is vital for it to running properly

Quick question though, if I am only replacing the thermostat gasket I saw you remove, can the same spring be re-utilized? The new thermostat looked like it was already compressed in place. Yeah the thing is when you replace the thermostat it's a whole assembly it's not just the thermostat itself I was safe on my end and put a slight of our TV all the way around it just prevent it from leaking make sure you buy a fill pro or ACDelco gasket they work the best for this car I don't recommend dorman or duralast too much on these cars and make sure all three of the bolts are tight cuz if they're not they will leak when the AC is on at times but may not leak when the AC is off can trick you to be sure you do it right the first time cuz if not you'll be taking it off again and make sure your cells have no dirt or debris or dust on it because if they do they will leak and you'll be back in the same boat again

Draining system will be a good idea. Your drain port might be on lower left side of radiator if standing in front of car.
You will need to carefully remove a few lower plastic splash guard panel screws to then carefully pull guard down to access drain port.

I can’t get the hose that was attached to the thermostat (removed at 2:35) to fasten back securely. I got it to stay and it drove fine, but now it appears to have come loose over the weekend. Do I need to bend the clip to make it tighter? Perhaps a zip tie could help?

Good morning ☕️ that’s great she has an interest in learning DIY car repairs. 😁👍
Are you referring to the lock-clip on the hose that secures to the Thermostat? If so, you will want to ensure the hose is properly installed on Thermostat, followed by the clip down and locked in place. 🧰

I followed this steps and it worked out great on my 2012 Chevy Cruze!! This got rid of that “Ac/Off due to high engine” This was my last resort after changing 2 sensors thank god I found this video! However, I noticed that the clip attached to the hose that connects the thermostat housing isn’t clipping right. I dont hear the “click” sound. Once I pushed it to clip it would just go back up? I dont know if im doing something wrong or need a new clip? Any tips?

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders
      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. The clip will not properly set until the coolant hose is fully secured to the Thermostat. Ensure hose is pressed all the way onto Thermostat & not crooked. Keep us posted.

Thanks for watching & sharing your question. You will need to know your exact engine size. In most cases, the torque specs for a 1.4L are common & universal however prior to using torque wrench, we recommend contacting your local Chevy dealership & provide them with your VIN #.....they will be able to pull up the absolute exact specs for your engine!
