I love how Squid Game is explicitly a critique of capitalism and how the elite will take advantage of the lower class and treat them as nothing more than entertainment, and then Netflix ignored all that and made a reality show.
It's like when the Hunger Games movies first came out and everyone was focusing on the love story for Katniss instead of y'know, children being murdered, which is exactly what was happening in the book.

The whole point of the original Squid Game series was a critique of the lengths people being crushed under capitalism will go to in order to find relief. It’s discouragingly unaware to then go and make that a reality show, let alone then try and cut corners in production costs and mistreat contestants to save money.

My dad got super depressed and had zero energy, and basically was just all around miserable in every way after his testosterone levels dropped since he is in his 40s now, and his doctor said he wouldn't prescribe it because his levels were normal, mind you they were at the low end of "normal" and clearly it was causing him problems that impeded his ability to take care of himself and live the same life he had been before. He kept pushing and pushing and the doctor finally told him, look if i give you this, which i won't, you will be paying out of pocket because insurance will not pay for it. It was somewhere around $800 PER MONTH for the prescription. He orders it online for $200 for an 8 week supply... :/

In the "gym" community it has quite recently become more accepted to talk about body dysphoria, how many do it because they dont feel good in their own body and for many it doesn't really help, likely because of social ideas of how you should look, very much like how young women get pressure from models
I hope we as a species/society learn more about accepting ourselves and learn to be proud of ourselves for the changes we decide to make in the future, so we don't constantly walk around just feeling the bad thoughts about our own bodies

I might need to fact-check myself here but I feel like the old competition shows back in the day like American Idol usually at least had smaller payouts for contestants that made it past the auditions to the audience-voting stage. At the rate they're cranking out game shows now, I doubt they have the kind of capital to throw around like they used to, but if they can't at least afford to compensate people who are already financially struggling for their time and labor, they shouldn't be making these shows.

The squid game gameshow is a perfect example of a phenomenon I named: "the Robo-cop effect". It's a specific ludo-narrative dissonance I've noticed in a lot of media. It's when a piece of media with revolutionary/subversive themes and is subsequently co-opted by the oppressing group (usually capitalism). The original media keeps the revolutionary themes in writing, but the media has become what it originally fought against. (Robocop originally has strong anti-capitalist and anti-celebrity themes. And then executives made a Robocop children's animated show, a concept that the original movie criticized)

As a dental student I can also say orthodontics are so powerful for changing someone’s self image and it also can really help with the actual function of their mouth; whether it be with chewing, grinding your teeth, etc… I wish it was more accessible here in the US. I get that the justification for having these contestants on without paying them or compensating their time is the potential 4 million reward. But I think that is a flawed one, these contestants are supplying the entirety of your plotlines, drama, everything. You do not have the show without them.
They deserve some sort of base rate or payment for appearing on the show with then the potential to win the reward, that pays for the time and investment many of these people have to give in to just appear on the show and hopefully does a bit more on top. This shouldn't be a 'You should be happy for this opportunity' type situation.

jarvis thank you for talking about the medication problems - i had SO many issues with pharmacies and getting adderall/vyvanse this past year and a half, and i felt like i was being childish in a way?? the one email that needs to get sent is SUCH a real thing. i hope you continue to be on the right track!!!
apparently im live commenting through edits - the exercise/weight conversation was also super important to me, a now-retired college athlete who's gained weight and struggled with establishing a workout routine again. i appreciate your vulnerability guys

I decided to watch the squid game show, I agree with everything said about it, but i wanted to say that gganbu gang made me smile so many times throughout the show. 232, gramps, was such a kind old man, and i was so happy to see him continue through most of the show. Those guys were the saving grace, they always chose honor over wins, as any good person should.

Re Squid Game's production: Amazing that on a show where people are expected to be put into torturous conditions, they did not do a thorough, thoughtful construction of what literally any medical help would look like. The moment it's needed to a degree that they can't tastefully hide it like anything else that makes us feel for these people as actual people, they have to throw together some impeding plan that put their cast at real risk over profits and "good television." This absolutely doesn't work as a reality show with the way they're not allowed to, y'know, violate their cast's rights to safety and life for a big sack of money.

Shelley Duvall on numerous occasions pushed back against the rumours of Kubrick abusing her through the process. She was definitely pushed too hard, but she insisted that it had been played out by media. Hard to say if that's a response as result of the abuse or not, but I thought I'd mention!

Trans man fan- thanks Jarvis for being vulnerable and sharing about your gynocomastia surgery first of all, and then for calling it gender affirming care. It's so huge to normalize that people all over the gender spectrum get gender affirming procedures.

It was nice to hear your perspective on your gynecomastia surgery. I went through the same thing and I've never heard anyone else talk about it, let alone relate to it. It's not life threatening like you said but mine was painful to the touch and I was just very uncomfortable in my body because of it.

As someone with anxiety who primarily experiences anxiety attacks while in public settings it pisses me off to find out that that guy was being portrayed as dramatic for literally just having an anxiety/panic attack. Ive had similar experiences where ppl assume im just being dramatic n its literally caused me to feel like i have to explain myself mid anxiety attack whenever i have one around others bc i dont want ppl assuming im overreacting or doing it on purpose. It actually pisses me off so much that that mentality could be perpetuated to the audience thru this moment on the show.

The convo at the end about commuting so much that you feel like you don't have a life is exactly what I'm going through right now in LA. Unfortunately the housing/apartments where I work is insanely expensive compared to what I make.

thank you for reminding me to go get my meds
edit: as an enby person who got top surgery, I have never regretted it once and I actively think about how happy it makes me everyday

The debate about plastic surgery surrounding Matt Rife sucks. I’ve had jaw surgery - maxillofacial surgery - that completely changed my face and made me more conventionally pretty. I have had juvenile rheumatoid arthritis since I was 3 and it had severely damaged my jaw. It’s very common in girls with JRA. That surgery was such a huge life changing experience that I’m still sensitive about. Hearing people demonize maxillofacial surgery has been extremely unpleasant. Thank you so much for pointing out that just because Rife acts shitty doesn’t mean suddenly we can all comment on his body. People can’t be pleased - if someone doesn’t have a nice jawline or chin, they’ll make fun of that, but if they do something to fix it, they’ll make fun of that to. Criticize Matt Rife for appropriate reasons, not anything and everything.

Speaking of rare MP3s, for the longest time I didn't know what the real version of Linkin Park's Points of Authority because for some reason I had an alternative version downloaded that I later learned to be called Vertical Limit

1:13:49 i went to a screening of Rocky Horror for halloween and part of the show is the host yelling jokes the whole movie, at one point he made a nickleback joke and nobody laughed but a couple people yelled “come on man nicklebacks cool” it was awesome
