Im gen z, not gen alpha, but i think the reason skibidi toilet has so much appeal is because it feels like an inside joke. Like how sometimes you have jokes with your friends that you could never explain to other people (the context/joke itself but also just why its funny), and this feels like that but its more like a whole generation's inside joke. I have a little bit of faith in these kids, that they dont sit down to watch these videos and go "hm yes that was excellent entertainment". Its that it's fun to send stupid things to your friends, its fun to say "skibidi" in front of your teacher/parents when they have no clue what it means, and it's fun to follow the ridiculous lore now. It's not that their humor is that different from ours, its that we all kinda forgot how dumb we were when we were 13.
I agree with this, it reminds me of when I was on the younger end of high school and saw shrek is love, shrek is life for the first time. Or salad fingers. Both were kind of a right of passage, once you’ve seen it you’re in on the joke or you’re kind of cooler for knowing about it. There’s been weird shit for every age.
@@julesmadison1199 exactly!! What i had in mind was "Llamas with Hats" kind of stuff. Or Charlie the Unicorn. I watched that stuff as a kid too. It was kinda gross, stupid, funny at the time... all the things gen alpha probably sees in skibidi toilet
I'm gen Z borderline gen A and have younger gen A cousin, and y'all are spot on and i love that you're so understanding about it. every generation has their unique portion of inside jokes and absurd, kind of meaningless, and immature humor. each generation's portion is just spoken in a different language :)

Skibidi toilet confirms that generation alpha enjoys shortform narrative portrait videos. Man, Quibi really was created too early and made shows for the wrong crowd.
Yeah idk why Rhett is talking about his 15 year old because they're a bit old to be watching this. Skibidi toilet is being watched by the same kids who watched or currently watch cocomelon. That's why it has so many veiws.

8:16 i was raised mormon, mainly due to my dad, and my maternal grandmother always told my mom that after she dies, she better not “make her a mormon”. when she did pass, my dad pressured her to do a baptism for the dead for her (and a temple sealing with her ex husband, to make matters worse) and she caved. on the way home from the temple, my mom got VIOLENTLY ill and they had to pull over. it could’ve just been from nerves and guilt, but my mom was always convinced that she was being punished by her mom for going against her wishes. she always regretted it.

I once went into this metaphysical store and there was a warning about stealing. i don't think it was the regular "you're being recorded, theft is punishable blah blah" but more of a casual sign that said something unique about being punished for stealing I remember seeing it and not thinking about it much and I pocketed a pentacle necklace "for protection" as I was just really starting my craft at 13 and was living in an abusive household. within 30 seconds I felt unbelievably nauseous and I'll and decided to go outside to get some fresh air. I git outside and walked up to the car door, car parked directly in front of the shopdoor & up against the sidewalk, and before I could even grab the handle I began vomiting profusely. so much vomit. i had just eaten McDonald's, and I threw up an unbelievable amount of strawberry shake, fries, and chicken nuggets. it was absolutely _more than I even ate,_ as when we got home I _continued to vomit for another half hour into the tub._ that day I learned that magic is _absoluely real._ whatever curse befell me seemed to continue on for _years_ as i went through literal hell, manipulated into sort of causing the events that led to my own unwarranted and false imprisonment for 3 years, homelessness/couch surfing several months after the imprisonment, isolation and bullying during it, multiple assaults of different kinds, and an abusive relationship, all before I found the pendant, took it to the river (fire hadn't worked), prayed deeply to be forgiven and washed of my transgressions by the universe and my gods, and gave the pendant to the river to be cleansed. afterwards, shit seriously settled down quite a bit. not sure if the hell I experienced was linked to the pendant as I don't know why a 13 year old would be punished so severely but it certainly feels like it was.
I totally agree that it is super messed up that your dad did that, however, according to Mormon religion a person can refuse those “works” that people do on this side of the veil. That doesn’t excuse what your dad did at all but hopefully it gives you some piece of mind
I hate skibidi toilet with my whole heart, but I can't really be mad at the children watching it because I used to watch absurd youtube videos at the age of 10-14 😭
I teach elementary age children and Skibidi Toilet is such a core point of community for them, they draw Skibidi's they discuss the episodes and make theories, its fun to watch
Man I'm 25 and I watch Skibidi but I swear there's so much to be said in terms of media analysis about this. I was watching way dumber stuff when I was 10. This show may seem ridiculous to yall right now, but it has actual production, sound design, great music choices, and so many references to actually great pieces of media that kids will be exposed to. I also disagree that "there's nothing to hold onto" about the show. This guy is clearly very good at creating suspense, introducing characters and making the audience invested. It's pretty much a meta sorta joke. The thing is making fun of itself. I can go on a whole rant about it, honestly.

jarvis saying you can have a hobby that doesnt turn a profit is really relieving to hear. Im a pre-med bio major in uni and a visual artist on the side. Things in the STEM world are very career driven and i carry that over into my art very frequently when i dont need to. Its really nice to be reminded that i can just make art to enjoy it, it doesnt have to be something im working towards as a career.
i’m proud of you stranger as someone who lost motivation during covid and gave up on my premed dreams, you got this and don’t forget to make time for yourself and your art! that’s the most important thing
I went into studying visual arts after high school cause I wanted to make it my career, and I was miserable. It took me a very long time to get comfortable with my art and the fact that I do it for me and not for profit, or an audience. Took me ten years to go back to watercolours actually haha So kudos to you, it is a very liberating realisation! :))
There’s a drag queen named Flamy Grant (named after Christian pop singer Amy Grant) who’s a former worship leader. She makes progressive Christian country/rock music, and she recently topped the iTunes contemporary Christian charts which really peed off a lot of conservative Christians and televangelists. She was also put forward for Grammy consideration, but they moved her from the Christian music category to the pop category because there’s a song on her album that includes the word “cock”, and apparently that automatically disqualified her from the Christian category (the song itself was about sexism in the church, and I can’t remember the exact lyric but it was something along the lines of “I didn’t know having a cock was a prerequisite to being a church leader”). I’d love for Rhett to duet with her after hearing him talk about his deconstruction and his music!
Minor semantic correction at 1:06:40- Valve didn’t create Garry’s mod (a guy named Garry did, intuitively), they just created the engine it’s based on. Just for anyone who’s interested lol
Minor semantic correction of this semantic correction, when G-Mod was made into a standalone game in 2006 it was funded and published by valve but still mostly coded by Gary and his very very small team.
Its fascinating how seperate different segments of the internet were even back in 2006. I assumed that Rhett would have known about Gmod because of how prevalent it was on early youtube. It never occurred to me that he wouldnt recognize the animation style and the beats of the gmod animation genre. The internet really is a big place, and it makes me wonder what I "missed"
this is thw first time i've ever heard this exact sentiment spelled out! i always wonder if there are these bigger pockets of the internet golden age that i "missed out" on. the only thing i can compare it to is growing up listening to emo music and discovering pop songs that were big when i was a pre-teen later in life.

I, as a 16 yo, just want to say that we are not the ones genuinely enjoying skibidi toilet. Ive actually only seen it described as "weird gen alpha shit that we're too old too understand"
I literally listen to you guys while drawing on my iPad all the time. It’s like comforting background noise that isn’t super distracting and helps me focus in on the art really well. Love these super long episodes for that.
The Social Network was filmed at my college lol. So all the exterior shots of "Harvard" are actually Hopkins, but then the interiors were all studio sets, so it was them walking into like the chemistry building and it's somehow a dorm and things like that. So weird to watch. Also when I was applying to colleges my choices came down to Carnegie Mellon and Hopkins. I said no to Carnegie Mellon, and it was definitely the best decision I ever made.
i think you guys aren’t realizing that the people genuinely enjoying skibidi toilet aren’t 15, they’re like 5. it’s generation alpha. its caused a lot of discussion about where that generation is going.
32:36 Rhett your deconstruction series was an important catalyst for me to finally open up to the idea of leaving my faith behind. It had been percolating for a long time, but seeing two people I respect be open and honest about their decision made it so much easier to be open and honest with myself. Thank you and Link both.
What I loved most was the contrast of their two decisions. Rhett was so factual (history shows these stories to be false). Link was so emotional (how can you tell me to hate my friend/business partner). Two entirely different ways of arriving at the same conclusion.
I feel like Skibidi Toilet is just exactly what a majority of middle schoolers find funny, which is why it is popular. From my experience, a lot of their humor is randomness for the sake of randomness. The thought process that “I don’t get this, I’m getting out of touch” is simply because people don’t regularly interact with kids age 10-13, the target audience. Middle schoolers like stuff because they like stuff, there isn’t that much more to it. That’s not bad, it’s not good, it’s just how people work.
@@Vamps4vamps I really need to see the statistics of this because people keep saying it but offering no proof that that's the age range thats into this

The quality of content and ability to have an intellectual conversation about literally anything is really impressive and comforting to watch. Great stuff, guys!!
I just started this episode but I wonder if they mention the fact that Rhett has basically the same last name as very Irish Jacksepticeye, which might help track the origin of the name
The way Benedict Cumberbatch looks medically British, Rhett looks medically Irish American--he doesn't look Scottish. It took me a couple trips out there to get it. Yes: a common ancestry. No: not the same. It's wild.
I feel like skibidi toilet is fully in line with what SFM animation/music videos have been doing for years with creators like an0nymoose and Eltorro64. I also think the evolution of skibidi toilet is not that surprising, dark subversions of funny/cute material is rampant on youtube as well (mickey mouse/goofy in the vietnam war, existential crisis ronald mcdonald). And the source assets also lend themselves well to creating a dystopian warzone. But these tropes reaching such a big audience is definitely new.
As someone whose mom is Scottish and can trace my lineage on her side all the way to Vikings (possibly via Ireland?) who settled in Scotland a veeeeeeeeeery long time ago, I find Rhett’s Scotland/Ireland lineage mixup so funny. It’s very easy to do, and neither one usually minds being confused for the other. However! If you think it’s Scotland or Ireland, and it turns out to be England? You’re getting hell for it 😂 Helpful tip: Mac- is usually Scottish, and Mc- is usually Irish ❤️

(around 6:25) a few years ago my grandparents did an ancestors test. my grandpa (around 80 years old at the time) found out that his father was not his biological father, but instead an Italian man was (test said he was about 40% Italian. which was a real shocker.) this made sense in hind sight because our last name is slavic, so my great grandfather had to have pretty prevalent slavic ancestry, but my grandfather always has looked very Italian (dark skin, especially when he is tan he turns like brown, dark hair, big nose, etc.) and he never knew why: especially because neither side of the family had prevelent Italian ancestry. my dad also was told he looked Italian (looks similar to my grandfather but less intense.) so, my 80 year old grandfather found out the man who he thought was his biological dad, was not, and he couldn’t ask about it because everyone he would ask had died (recently my great aunt had died and she probably knew something about it.) that was a whole thing and i feel bad because he didn’t find out till he was 80 and there was no one left to ask. it’s just insane. this part is more about me but, as i said, my last name is slavic. but, it belonged to my great grandfather whom i am not biologically related to, so i have a cool slavic last name, but i don’t really have ancestral ties with it, which is interesting
I worked at my ymca’s summer camp this year and one of the kids spent a collective 4 hours over the span of two weeks on painstakingly describing all of the lore of skibidi toilets to me. This was all while she was sitting on my lap kind of flopped over staring off into the distance while she talked having a lovely time and I didn’t have the heart to stop her 🧸 Love her like chocolate ❤ but I did come to understand the emotional and mental state of an animal that would chew its own leg off to get out of a trap!
I live in Charleston where they film The Righteous Gemstones, and it is thrilling to see well-known locations like our local bookstore (which closed months after the episode aired, rip), the At Home parking lot, and the McDonalds I go to only when I don’t feel like driving to the better one. I imagine that’s what it feels like to live in Hollywood or New York.
I felt called out twice during this: once when you mentioned not turning crocheting into a business (I was crocheting throughout this entire video) and then at the end with the comfort-watching/multi-tasking discussion lol

I love this episode so much because I grew up watching GMM since middle school and I intend to pass it on to my child who’s due in January because it’s something enjoyable, they have good practices, and they’re entertaining overall. I think they’ve progressed well over time too; as they’ve grown so have I and considering they have children of their own they know how to keep younger audiences attention even if they’ve grown over the years. It is kind of surreal how the internet has this kind of impact on media but I generally don’t like TV or dramas or mainstream media as much as YT and the fact that it can be so diverse is something I like, I just don’t like the drama aspect and controversies but I generally don’t like creators who end up getting into drama to begin with so I wouldn’t be ashamed to pass the things I’m interested in down to my next generation.

As an (as Americans would put it) European, it is really hard to crasp the concept of how big USA is. But that "i'm in the place where the entertainment comes from" at 19:22, kind of puts it into perspective. Because that's how I feel about USA. It's where the entertainment comes from. It's the TV universe. But if American people can feel that way too when they go to LA.... Like the best way I can put it in perspective is to not think of USA as a country, but rather think of the states as countries. Like someone from North Carolina going to LA is them going to a different country. LA to them is almost the same as LA to me. It's the TV/Movie universe and it doesn't feel like a real place and if one were to go to Hollywood it would feel like jumping through the screen. Edit. I haven't been to USA, but i too would be like "Omg a yellow school bus! Just like on TV!". I have met Americans though, and it always gives me whiplash to hear them speak and interact irl. Always feels like "haha they're so goofy, acting like the people in my phone. Get back in there lol"

The primal instincts
skibidi toilet setting off his fight or flight response
@@mariya_tortillaAs it should.
Right? Like I grew up on early smosh, which is just like fucked up five different ways.
And salad fingers??? Dude holy shit
I love how engaged Rhett is with not really the art itself but the culture around it and trying to understand it.
Yeah thats what comes from a "people first" mindset and its so healthy. we need more of that.
This is the most perfect explanation as to why I find so much safety in Rhett and his interactions. Like, I love Link but Rhett is the closest I've gotten to almost being parasocial 😭
Rhett feels like a very interesting person whose brain to pick at. Like, please tell me more about your cultural analysis!
rhett and link feel like such dads of youtube i feel like they r so empathetic to youtubers but have a great insight into how to run a buisiness or be professional and what not. they are so nice and caring when they r on podcasts its always so nice to listen to either of them
i agree with this so so much they have such a comforting constant presence on youtube. theyve been here for so long and r known by everyone but theyre both such genuine caring communicative open thoughtful wise people (all of those adjectives). especially listening to how and what they talk about on their own podcast, and also knowing what they did with anthony and ian buying smosh back? they are so dad

That's more than kind of messed up that your dad pressured your mom to do that
@@emanthekind2140it was extremely messed up! it wasn’t his decision to make. they eventually divorced and we all left the church, he was the only one of us who was ever truly invested in it

I once went into this metaphysical store and there was a warning about stealing. i don't think it was the regular "you're being recorded, theft is punishable blah blah" but more of a casual sign that said something unique about being punished for stealing
I remember seeing it and not thinking about it much and I pocketed a pentacle necklace "for protection" as I was just really starting my craft at 13 and was living in an abusive household.
within 30 seconds I felt unbelievably nauseous and I'll and decided to go outside to get some fresh air. I git outside and walked up to the car door, car parked directly in front of the shopdoor & up against the sidewalk, and before I could even grab the handle I began vomiting profusely. so much vomit. i had just eaten McDonald's, and I threw up an unbelievable amount of strawberry shake, fries, and chicken nuggets. it was absolutely _more than I even ate,_ as when we got home I _continued to vomit for another half hour into the tub._ that day I learned that magic is _absoluely real._
whatever curse befell me seemed to continue on for _years_ as i went through literal hell, manipulated into sort of causing the events that led to my own unwarranted and false imprisonment for 3 years, homelessness/couch surfing several months after the imprisonment, isolation and bullying during it, multiple assaults of different kinds, and an abusive relationship, all before I found the pendant, took it to the river (fire hadn't worked), prayed deeply to be forgiven and washed of my transgressions by the universe and my gods, and gave the pendant to the river to be cleansed.
afterwards, shit seriously settled down quite a bit.
not sure if the hell I experienced was linked to the pendant as I don't know why a 13 year old would be punished so severely but it certainly feels like it was.
I totally agree that it is super messed up that your dad did that, however, according to Mormon religion a person can refuse those “works” that people do on this side of the veil. That doesn’t excuse what your dad did at all but hopefully it gives you some piece of mind

Yes, I love this too. I graduated in a STEM field (Biology) years ago, and I love writing as a hobby.
i’m proud of you stranger as someone who lost motivation during covid and gave up on my premed dreams, you got this and don’t forget to make time for yourself and your art! that’s the most important thing
I went into studying visual arts after high school cause I wanted to make it my career, and I was miserable. It took me a very long time to get comfortable with my art and the fact that I do it for me and not for profit, or an audience. Took me ten years to go back to watercolours actually haha
So kudos to you, it is a very liberating realisation! :))
Your hobby should be a hobby. Once its for money or carrer skills its no longer a hobby, its just another job.
Minor semantic correction at 1:06:40-
Valve didn’t create Garry’s mod (a guy named Garry did, intuitively), they just created the engine it’s based on. Just for anyone who’s interested lol
Minor semantic correction of this semantic correction, when G-Mod was made into a standalone game in 2006 it was funded and published by valve but still mostly coded by Gary and his very very small team.

Also, Skibidi Toilet isn't made in GMod, it's made in SFM.

Gen alpha got some wild content
I mean, Gen Z had “Chug Jug With You” and stuff like Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen.
Ok random but Jarvis’s voice is such a good, calming podcast voice

More like elementary schoolers lmao

I thought this was gonna be "Rhett watches a weird video series and talks about it," but man, this is so much more. This definitely intrigues me to check out more of Sad Boyz!
It has been such a TREAT finding this podcast, great convos with lovely people, also the outro song fucks
You’re getting hell for it 😂
Helpful tip: Mac- is usually Scottish, and Mc- is usually Irish ❤️

(around 6:25) a few years ago my grandparents did an ancestors test. my grandpa (around 80 years old at the time) found out that his father was not his biological father, but instead an Italian man was (test said he was about 40% Italian. which was a real shocker.)
this made sense in hind sight because our last name is slavic, so my great grandfather had to have pretty prevalent slavic ancestry, but my grandfather always has looked very Italian (dark skin, especially when he is tan he turns like brown, dark hair, big nose, etc.) and he never knew why: especially because neither side of the family had prevelent Italian ancestry. my dad also was told he looked Italian (looks similar to my grandfather but less intense.)
so, my 80 year old grandfather found out the man who he thought was his biological dad, was not, and he couldn’t ask about it because everyone he would ask had died (recently my great aunt had died and she probably knew something about it.) that was a whole thing and i feel bad because he didn’t find out till he was 80 and there was no one left to ask. it’s just insane.
this part is more about me but, as i said, my last name is slavic. but, it belonged to my great grandfather whom i am not biologically related to, so i have a cool slavic last name, but i don’t really have ancestral ties with it, which is interesting
i highly recommend the new rhett and link sketches!! the haunted house one they just put out was so fun
