I almost had a heart attack when I saw Deepti in her wedding dress walking down the aisle about to marry him. But thank God she refused to marry him. I was worried about how much misery and abuse he would bring to her if she accepted.

We had other issues and he had a tendency to be incredibly hurtful on purpose. Ex. He told me the wedding dress of my dreams was ugly when we were having an unrelated fight. During our last conversation, I said I was tired of his dismissive attitude to my complaints about his behavior. He responded by saying he wasn't sure he was still attracted to me and didn't think he could ever gain the attraction back. So really, he was upset I dared question his toxicity and he reacted by trying to break me. This was one month before the wedding. I was shocked. I broke off the engagement that night. I had put up with so much abuse at that point, I was just done.

I really wanted someone to clock Shake for his self-hatred. The fact that he had to constantly compare Deepti -- who is also Indian -- to a relative as a justification for why there was no physical attraction is a HUGE red flag.

I don't think it's fair to immediately jump to self-hatred. Some people who do live in an international area tend to stray away from people of the same ethnicity because maybe the main interaction with the people he's had of those ethnicities has been his family. For example I associate the Chinese language and mandarin with family, and I would probably prefer if a romantic partner spoke primarily in another language. I love my background and have a strong emotional connection with Chinese culture, this is not related to any kind of self-hatred. can confirm it is ABSURDLY hard to get into vet school. i have friends who went thru tech programs. had perfect grades. passed every test w/ flying colors. interned at great practices. got rejected from every plac they applied. the competition is insane. i dont know WHAT Shake did to get into one and pass everything.

From pressure to succeeed in a highly competitive environment to dissecting animals on a daily basis... it just messes with your head. She had the biggest personality I've ever experienced over the course if her time there. Started out as a kind maybe slightly naive girl who wanted to help animals. Now she does animal testing for a pharmaceutic company.

I think he did genuinely start to like her for her personality and companionship even if he kept outwardly emphasizing physical attraction, but he associates romance moreso with sex than an emotional connection (i.e. an emotional connection similar to one you'd have with a close friend or family member), and it seems like he is too emotionally immature to have both with one person at once. The best romantic relationships usually work on both a platonic and sexual level, where both sides of the relationship act not only as romantic partners but also as friends who genuinely enjoy spending time together even if they're not having sex. Issue is that there are a lot of assholes out there who see marriage as a way to get a live-in sex machine or housekeeper who they don't want to spend much time with otherwise.

We had other issues and he had a tendency to be incredibly hurtful on purpose. Ex. He told me the wedding dress of my dreams was ugly when we were having an unrelated fight. During our last conversation, I said I was tired of his dismissive attitude to my complaints about his behavior. He responded by saying he wasn't sure he was still attracted to me and didn't think he could ever gain the attraction back. So really, he was upset I dared question his toxicity and he reacted by trying to break me. This was one month before the wedding. I was shocked. I broke off the engagement that night. I had put up with so much abuse at that point, I was just done.

I really wanted someone to clock Shake for his self-hatred. The fact that he had to constantly compare Deepti -- who is also Indian -- to a relative as a justification for why there was no physical attraction is a HUGE red flag.

I don't think it's fair to immediately jump to self-hatred. Some people who do live in an international area tend to stray away from people of the same ethnicity because maybe the main interaction with the people he's had of those ethnicities has been his family. For example I associate the Chinese language and mandarin with family, and I would probably prefer if a romantic partner spoke primarily in another language. I love my background and have a strong emotional connection with Chinese culture, this is not related to any kind of self-hatred. I think he did genuinely start to like her for her personality and companionship even if he kept outwardly emphasizing physical attraction, but he associates romance moreso with sex than an emotional connection (i.e. an emotional connection similar to one you'd have with a close friend or family member), and it seems like he is too emotionally immature to have both with one person at once.
The best romantic relationships usually work on both a platonic and sexual level, where both sides of the relationship act not only as romantic partners but also as friends who genuinely enjoy spending time together even if they're not having sex. Issue is that there are a lot of assholes out there who see marriage as a way to get a live-in sex machine or housekeeper who they don't want to spend much time with otherwise.

Just a side note, when Shake was making his deplorable comments on weight, I could tell Danielle was getting very triggered. She mentioned on the show that her incredible weight loss was a source of insecurity for her. So not only do I feel horrible for Deepti that she had to listen to that, I feel horrible for Danielle because it seemed as if it brought back some unpleasant memories; something I can understand as a person struggling with their body confidence.

Yes, he is very domineering and emotionally volatile. Seemingly anything will set him off. "You don't compliment me enough!"...ok, I didn't know I was supposed to compliment you every 5 seconds, now I'm getting yelled at? Natalie would often apologize, even though she was the one on the receiving end of aggression. Shane has a lot insecurity which he needs to get under control before he can be a stable partner. Most abusers aren't born evil, and their abuse is not necessarily intentional. It's a product of distorted thinking, over-reactivity, and a desire to control their partner to prevent them from leaving. It's essentially fear of abandonment on steroids.

As a Demiromantic asexual, yes. There’s a lot of aesthetically pleasing people out there but at the end of the day it really doesn’t contribute at all to my attraction for them so the whole thing about “love at first sight” and the importance of being physically attracted to your partner thing that Shake was talking about just doesn’t make any sense to me because it’s so different from my experience. Truth. I wasn't super attracted to my current boyfriend at first. He was at best a 5. But now that we've been together awhile, I've found more and more attractive qualities in his face, his body, his mannerisms. I'd say he's probably an 8 or 9 now.
