In Serbia, we privately experimented with just puting more sloped plexiglas on windshield of Piper Warior, to about half way of engine cowling, without removing original windshield... The effect was DRAMATIC. Easy from 90 to 105 kts on same power.

Cool vintage video. Sad Mr Roy LoPresti Sr. passed too soon from home accident. I'd say credit for round cowl inlets goes to Mississippi State research funded by NASA. However LoPresti brought it to GA with great modifications. The experimental community has also exploited this research including myself, converting Van's RV-7 standard design cowl to round (and airfoil inner contour) coupled to sealed upper plenum.
One of my brothers, Jim, was a Mississippi State graduate. In the business, we had my father and both of my brothers were Aeronautical Engineers. (12 different LoPresti's have worked together up to 9 all at one time).

Doesn't a lopresti cowl cost more than most Mooney's? Seems like any time saving would be offset by all the work someone would have to do to pay for it.
@@mp-xt2rg if you have a M20J the parts in a box is priced at $15,995. Most shops should be able to do this update in about 45-50 hours. (when we had a mechanic shop we did it in 32 hours.

@@daveok7131 We always had boats growing up but the name came from my dads' childhood. When he was a kid he followed aircraft racing and he remembered that the pilots of the fastest, best-looking aircraft were called Speed Merchants.
Would be awesome if they’d made a few speed mods for the Piper Tomahawk or a modernized cowling.

We add a "wedge" in front of the windshield of the PA-32s as part of our cowling. that also helps a bunch.

The cowling for the mooney J model is priced at $16,995. I think most Mooney 201s are higher priced than that.
