    So many trees falling around the cabin, and you were out there in the middle of it. Remember, potato head, it’s not how fast the wind is blowing but what the wind is blowing. Be careful out there, my friend. Keep it between the lines and watch your six.😮

    September 30, 2024: Well we are into 2024 and please know how finding your channel a few months ago has truly been a blessing. Your travels, perspective on life and how you adapt to your living or is it life style. I have watched you build your porch to change campers and trucks and there has been life lessons there also. I do love nature to hiking but have not done it in awhile but got my walking poles and going to hit day trails here in Maryland. Your taste test of beers is definitely unique but this drink for the New Year with blueberry, not to sure. I am Hawaiian so we say “Hauole Maka Heki hou”. Happy New Year. Although, my nationality is many my father is orginally from Pickering, Ontario. From what I understand the Wise name is well know and an old trappers general store is a historic building with the name. Dad’s family traveled to islands of Hawai’i when USA was know as the New Land to them. Some of the language or sayings were passed down to include his favorite cake…ketchup cake!!! He told us of PAI and the potatoes. I never looked it up but thought he was kidding. He and Mom, he met a Hawaiian girl, are no longer with us but some day being close to the border may adventure out. Take care and glade you weather the storm.

    If I was you. I'd run a metal bracket from that steel structural frame over to the bottom of the other bracket. Because when you're pushing down on that lightweight metal, it will break out. Believe me, I've fixed so many of them. But if you run a piece of metal over to that frame and over to that bracket to where you're pushing the force on that frame and not that light weight metal, you will hold a lot better.

    and here in Georgia, we have oak trees hundreds of yrs old with little to no deeps roots and they will topple over really quick with heavy rains and wind...some with four foot diameter bases... we hate loosing them too...

    So, you need a chainsaw kit, a wooden crate or plastic box in which you should put your saw, a couple of extra chains, chain oil, motor oil, 2-cycle oil, and chainsaw tools. You’ll need two different sized gas cans, a one gallon for mixing the 2-cycle oil and gas, then a 2 1/2 gallon for plain gas. You can place the box into your truck bed. With all your contents you’ll be able to clear the dead and down trees.
    P.S. The size of chainsaw? I went with the smaller Stihl chainsaw, with a 16 inch blade. I can handle it with one arm, leaving my other arm for pushing and pulling. It has served me well for many years.

    Just a word from the west coast where we often get blow downs in strong winds. One thing I've learned from having 11 big trees on our property is that the soil conditions play a role. If it has been dry, the rootlets dry out and shrink away from the soil. Then if there is a big rain, the dry sockets, so to speak, fill with water and the tree is actually swimming in the water. Thus its important to keep your trees moistened especially if you anticipate early big storms in the fall.

    • @drslv6389
      @drslv6389 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      2nd, I'm not sure if you were saying "cedars" in a generic way to mean evergreens or if those were cedars. Cedars are wet ground trees, so they should do okay stability wise, but planted or growing g on a slope as you have might not be the best habitat as it will dry out in summer. You can tell if they were sick by looking at the crosscut. Dark rings inside from. The bark indicates a disease problem. One of your cedars had that, I think
      , so the wind was just cleaning up the forest. Maples are definitely not more stable, and they are also wet bottom trees. Check with an arborist at local nursery before planting.

    Im glad you are safe and nothing happen to your cabin. I don't know what part of the country you live in but where I live, the trees are dying and they are just falling down. My house is surrounded by trees too and I'm am so nervous they will fall down. The trees are dying all over the state. I go on hikes regularly to different state parks in my area and all over the trees look like something out of a dystopia. It's pretty bad.....I'm surprise no one is talking about the trees that are dying. Anyone else seeing the trees dying in their area?

  • @LynneFarr

    Sorry about all the lost trees. The deer and later the saplings will flourish. Happy New Year & hope for no more severe storms in NB. . Several years ago, we had a really bad windstorm that wiped out a power station. I live on the edge of the Plains. After several days with only a portable generator, I had an electrician come and measure the amps involved in the start up spike of everything in the house. AC, grill range & oven, dishwasher, washer & dryer etc. Then he added 25% more. Bought a natural gas generator and automatic transfer switch to handle it. It was not cheap, but it has really come in handy several times. Our freezer has stored our things and some for neighbors. When we travel in the Winter, there is always the danger of frozen pipes. The peace of mind has been priceless. I highly recommend that route as a long term solution.

    Happy new years! 👍 It's not as much about the health of trees or species in bad storms like that one,...it's saturated soil, wind = widow makers. I've seen many-many healthy trees come down. Even large branches. Around here, in areas where people love their trees..seems someone always has one come down on their house or car. And yes,..people have lost their lives. Glad the cabin was spared along with you in it. You may want to reconsider clearing just a few more that have a chance of causing problems later, (from someone who loves trees as much as you),. Storms these days seem to be worse and more frequent. Good luck. Cheers. 👍

      Only 30’ above sea level here, & what I’ve witnessed is whenever they start culling trees, it doesn’t take much (or very long) for the rest to uproot.

    • @jimp.7286
      @jimp.7286 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@sunshine3914 Clearing a safe zone around a house in the middle of a forest doesn't likely cause other trees to fall except in dense forest where they possibly support each other in the soil, (up to a point),. They still come down in the bad storms as you saw in his video. And if they don't,..you still have widow maker branches to deal with. I live 200ft above sea level and the pine here are a fragile species already. They only live about as long as we do and as beautiful as they are,...they've also been deadly and destructive. One might need to think through clearing property carefully and evaluate the risk they're will to accept. Living right up against tall trees in places hit with huge storms like the one slim was in,...is always a risk. When the wind is like that - it gets serious real fast. Cheers.

    Happy New Year Slim! 🙂 I knew the deer would be happy, they love to nibble on my cedar trees too... and although you are hesitant to plant cedar again, the ones that fell were probably 50+ years old.... and as suggested already, maybe you could find someone who could mill a few of those trees(cedar especially) to allow you to build something for your home 🙂

  • @chrismatic3000
    @chrismatic3000 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It isn't just the weak trees that come down, and once some trees come down it increases the odds that others will follow because the remaining ones are less protected. Any slight change in direction of very heavy winds, higher rainfall, or timing of gusts will do the same thing to the surrounding trees. Cedar tree roots in water saturated soil tumble very easy. I have been dealing with fallen cedar trees for 10 years. Every time the ground water level goes up I lose trees whose roots at that point are pretty much floating.

    Glad you didn't have any serious damage from that storm. I grew up in the country, and we always kept 2 weeks of food in the house during the winter, just in case. That a rule I still keep. While I am no prepper, I do have a small generator and a snowblower. I test them every fall and make sure I have fuel in the gas cans for the winter. I just view it as a bit of insurance for bad storms. As for what you need, I don't know, but a small generator would let you recharge the batteries that you have with your solar system.

    Slim, when you get back from travelling, you may want to invite an arborist to come over and evaluate your trees. There may be a few (hopefully not!) that need to be removed, or at least thinned for less wind resistance. It would probably be worth paying someone for the expertise, if that's needed.
    Good to see that the cabin can function for you as a lifeboat when things go sideways. Right now we're part owners of a park model RV, but we're looking at picking something up in the next year or so for camping as well as having something that can function in a disaster as a lifeboat if that's needed (we do have a natural gas fireplace in the house, so when we lost power for 72 hours in an ice storm almost three years ago, we did stay warm; now we've got some lithium power for minimal assistance and Santa brought a few solar panels to help charge when needed).
    Any chance you'll be travelling to see the upcoming eclipse? Another video would be in order, for sure.
    All the best to you in your travels. If you cross the continent and end up in the Pacific Northwest, I hope that our trails will cross.

    I also was surprised that the roots systems were so shallow, especially being so close to the water table.

    Happy new year, Slim! It's so sad to see the trees that feel in the storms. Even the deer looked sad when they walked up. I'm glad they were able to eat from the fallen trees. So sad, all around.

    I would consider a propane powered refrigerator for the cabin. It could be turned off while traveling, but hold important groceries during periods of limited power. You have the stove for heating water.

    Same storm blew through New England. Took my neighbors homes roof, my shed roof. Haven't seen this kind of damage outside of a hurricane. Lots of downed trees, the pines got it worst.

    One upside in the loss is more sunlight can now reach the forest floor giving what can grow there like saplings etc. a jumpstart hopefully being left alone by the deer. A use for the logs besides firewood are for borders for raised garden beds since as the decay they give back to the soil and it will be interesting what he might find coming back with more sunlight below. Always avoid burning plastics like bubble wrap of packing peanuts etc since what the out gas in its smoke can be quite unhealthy to breath and its smells lingers.🌱

    That looks like this place after Fiona hit. We lost thousands of trees of old growth during that storm. It still looks bad but we are picking at it fairly often. This past storm brought a few more trees down and left me running visitors out of the driveway but only the top of the spruce broke that time, lol. No blackout from this storm, thankfully.

    A note to consider, covering the tree roots with more than 4 inches smothers the tree. I am surrounded by maple trees, and at least 5 of them did come down in winds storms. Two of which I am blaming on myself for covering the roots.

    Now you have lots of firewood. ❤ Someone else suggested a wood chipper. Great idea. You can put chips down along your foot paths. Helps to keep down on ticks.
