Mountain climbing is a dream (way too much knee surgery), so I dream while watching. I can barely remember ‘life’ pre-Rocko…she adds so much to the episodes
If you went to a quick oil change center they always recommend a crankcase flush due to heavy sludge. The technician gets a commission depending what they upsell.
Check your oil often and smell it. If it smells burned it might be because the engine is working hard on those trails. Look at your new oil, smell it so you know what fresh smells like. Then check weekly looking at color and smell. Also run your finder on the dipstick and feel for any grittiness. Also get a magnet and run it through the oil pan after draining and see if you find much little metal bits. Can you add an oil temp monitor to the van? Oil drips, if oil is dripping it will collect dirt, look for blacking cake oil anywhere, especially around engine seals or EGR air returns. Also, when was the last time you replaced your air filter? Don't buy those aftermarket filters, especially anything called 'high flow' air filter. You drive enough in the dirt, you want that dirt trapped before it's in the engine. If you can, use low pressure water, and clean inside the engine compartment then once a month look for oil leaks. Aftermarket oil cleaners/additives that make huge promises can also eat away at oil seals so be careful. If the inside of the engine is dirty, change oil again sooner. Oil will do some cleaning as it is formulated with some detergents and other additives to prevent build up. Write down mileage, oil brand used with each oil change if you can.
@forestyforest Was thinking more about this. Should consider your transmission, rear axle and transfer case oil as well. When were these last changed? How hard have they been used? Oh, guess you might have a solid front axle with differential? Just consider when those may need some fresh oil. If your engine has been driven hard, your transmission may want some luvin as well. If you have a mechanic you trust, that person can give you good advice. If you don't remember when these were done, perhaps start with transmission oil/filter when you get a chance. Do you have a trans temp oil gauge? Trans/engine oil temp gauges take the guess work out of how hard something is working. Engine oil, how often do you need to top it up? Also for engine health, getting a compression test on each cylinder can tell you how well your valves and piston rings are sealing. Not sure what problems are common on your engine/transmission.
Who doesn’t love to watch Rocko eat huckleberries (or were those blueberries) right off the bush. And then fall to sleep in your jacket at the top of the mountain. Your videography is more like cinematography all the time. Cheers!!
My grandparents were long haul truckers. I was able to trade stories with my grandpa about van life vs trucking life before he died, and they are VERY similar. He gave me a lot of good tips throughout the years that came in handy when I lived in my van.
You got your van set up just right, it's perfect, I have that same van, live in Virginia, and have put 267,000 miles on it with no major repairs, keep driving it and build up that new van fund, and all my miles on my van is in city, stop and go, give Rocco a big hug, love that dog. You've got a new pot. It's got a big handle. You're getting civilized! Beautiful shot on that snowy ridge! It's literally amazing what you accomplish on these hikes.
Truly the best way to look at or find anything in the oil is through the filter. Once you remove it split the filter open and look there for particles or silver spots! Nobody can tell from the dip stick!! My GM leaks from every spot but it’s still running, check the gas and fill the oil! Awesome pictures again it makes you wonder what the early pioneers went through, trying to find away across!
Hey Foresty forest what a fun video another amazing climb the mountains the scenery always so amazing thank you and Rocco for taking us to the mountaintops where most of us will never get to go now that colder weather is coming always happy to see you and Rocco back home in your tiny little home. . Perfect Tuesday treat. Love the adventures look forward to them all. Started looking for my adventure rig so hopefully I'll be mountaineering next summer
If a technician shows you a dipstick, air filter or a metallic smudge of oil on a paper towel...its a scam, If the tech simply explains what she or he found...its could be legit. A burning oil smell could be a llose oil filter. However it is more likely a weeping/leaking gasket, o-ring or even a loose fitting somewhere. Track it down and hit it with your DIY skills. Thanks for the video.
Yeah I agree, doing your own oil change isn't super hard and I'm sure a lot of people would be more than happy to help you check it yourself and the burning oil is most likely just a small leak somewhere.
next time you are in town look for an auto parts store and look for a engine oil leak detection kit or or order one online, it a dye that reacts to UV light. you simply put it in the oil and operate the engine for a bit and then using the provided UV flashlight and special glasses it will show where the leak or leaks are coming from. The UV light is also good for looking for bed bugs at hotels and motels. 😆 Retired mechanic of 46 years.
Yep you're right, a gasket is loose & leaks on my 20+ year old Toyota, it's common as vibrations over the years loosen the rubber gaskets or they shrink, it gets that smell sometimes. Always check dipstick every few hundred KMs & top off as needed
If we're honest with ourselves... it's genuinely quite a time to be alive to be able to watch youtube content like this

Good to see you and Rocco again. 🙏
My bad 🤯 good morning to you and Rocko 😃
Hey Foresty forest what a fun video another amazing climb the mountains the scenery always so amazing thank you and Rocco for taking us to the mountaintops where most of us will never get to go now that colder weather is coming always happy to see you and Rocco back home in your tiny little home. . You guys are amazing. Be safe out there.🇺🇸♥️🙏✌️😎🐾🚐🏔️🇨🇦
Perfect Tuesday treat. Love the adventures look forward to them all. Started looking for my adventure rig so hopefully I'll be mountaineering next summer
been watching your adventures for years now and always looking forward to watch the next video .
Yeah. Look at valve cover gaskets too if you smell oil.
next time you are in town look for an auto parts store and look for a engine oil leak detection kit or or order one online, it a dye that reacts to UV light.
you simply put it in the oil and operate the engine for a bit and then using the provided UV flashlight and special glasses it will show where the leak or leaks are coming from.
The UV light is also good for looking for bed bugs at hotels and motels. 😆
Retired mechanic of 46 years.
Yep you're right, a gasket is loose & leaks on my 20+ year old Toyota, it's common as vibrations over the years loosen the rubber gaskets or they shrink, it gets that smell sometimes. Always check dipstick every few hundred KMs & top off as needed
What he said 😂
