Turning a Salt Grinder

  • In this video I turn a salt grinder to match a pepper grinder I had turned earlier. The pepper grinder was made from walnut so I wanted a contrasting wood and decided on curley maple. I got lucky with the blanks as both had a lot of figure and finished very well. The process I used to make this salt grinder is the same as I use to make my pepper grinders. The crush grind mechanisms are fairly easy to install and adjust. Overall, it was a fun project. I hope you enjoy the video. Comments are always welcome.

    Steve, I'm a newcomer to turning (not young, just new) and appreciate watching and learning from your technique and approaches... nice idea using the back of your roughing gouge to feel when your blank is rounded.

      Thanks Warren. I'm a self taught woodturner. I learned watching TH-cam videos like Cap'n Eddie and Carl Jacobson. Keep practicing and I'm sure you'll get the hang of it. It's a lot of fun! Be safe and thanks for watching. Take care, Steve

      Hi Steve, Will do mate. I've been a chippy for a long time and i don't think children nowadays have the opportunity we had to learn the craft. Not just in carpentry but other trades as well. Its all computers, consoles.and mobile phones. Just wonder sometimes where the next generation of trades are coming from. I've got my own carpentry company in the UK. love what i do but always a pleasure to see a fellow craftsman at work.

      Joe Colwell I couldn't agree with you more Joe. I'm not sure where the next generation of craftsmen will come from either Hopefully they will get bored with their electronic devices and decide to pick up a hammer and saw to make something. If they do, they'll be hooked. Thanks for watching and commenting. Take care, Steve

    Steve, I am about to turn my first pepper grinder using the CrushGrind mechanism. I don't understand the need for the 1-1/8" recess in the top of the body. The lower edge of the top of the mechanism is 1-1/16" and should fit in the 1-1/16" hole with no slop. Otherwise, nice job and I was happy to see you using the PSI chuck like mine. I have seen others use a jam chuck where you used the step jaws and I wondered why. Thanks to you, I am ready to go.

      Dave - It's been a while since I made this video and turned a salt/pepper grinder so you're probably correct about the size of the holes. Thanks for watching and commenting on my video. Good luck with your pepper grinder! Take care, Steve

    Beautiful piece of Maple you used, did it come as a "complete" kit?,i.e. Grinder parts AND wood, or did you have to buy the wood separate? Good video, and good clear shots of the different steps, Thanks for sharing.Happy Turnings. =)

    Lovely job, but how do you put the salt/pepper in?

    • @slindsley1951
      @slindsley1951  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +John Fithian-Franks John - The top is only a press fit onto the shaft that works the grinder on the bottom. Pull off the top and the salt/pepper goes in the hole in the top of the body. I appreciate you watching and commenting on my video. Take care, Steve

    one question. why do you use such a large piece of maple? such a waste of expensive wood. you could get two grinders from the piece. Just a thought. excellent video thank you.

    • @slindsley1951
      @slindsley1951  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Raymond - The place I buy my pepper blanks sells them in a 3x3x12 size. The salt grinder was going to be 8" so I needed a piece a little longer to account for the tenons. I keep all the cutoffs and use them in other projects. The largest diameter of the piece was just over 2" so the 3" piece wasn't that much too big. I could have made the pieces shorter and maybe ended up with 2 grinders but they would have been shorter than what I wanted. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Both are very much appreciated. Take care, Steve

    • @raymondharvey7439
      @raymondharvey7439 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your fast reply. I was wrong . I thought the diameter of the salt shaker was about 1 and a half inches. I thought the diameter of the blank was 4 inches. My apology kind sir. I really enjoyed the video.

    Nice job! Very methodical process laid out for us! Have you made any of these using the groo e to capture the tabs as opposed to epoxy or is that just too unforgiving of a process?
    Also check out woodturner21 if you want to see an artisan with the skew. I, like you learning a lot from TH-cam. Thanks again for your vid!

    • @slindsley1951
      @slindsley1951  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeff - Thanks for the comments. I thought about cutting the grooves for the tabs but didn't feel like springing for the tool or grinding my own to do it. I don't do that many salt/pepper grinders to justify the cost. See the link below. The instructions that came with the grinder from Craft Supplies said to cut off the tabs and use epoxy. I've never had one come apart which is a good thing. Thanks for watching and commenting on my video. Take care, Steve
