Woodturning - Butternut Pepper Grinder (Crush Grind)

  • Two points I forgot to mention in the video:
1st is most important and is concerning the finishing process. When applying the final coat of polyurethane, use a piece of cotton cloth that wont shed lint easily.
2nd point is that before gluing in the mechanisms, I sealed the inside of the grinder with Shellac. It's not critical but I always feel wood should be sealed on all sides.

The Pohl Barn Projects Thank you kindly! Honestly my kits sat for a good 3 weeks while my head tried to wrap itself around the process, and think of some sort of shape Lol A lot of little steps involved!
Safe and happy turning to you,

I think it is Uniquely Nice. I especially like the center section. It would be nice to have an endless supply of Butternut.
You would think it grows on trees! The poly made a great finish.
Today I tried Minwax Polycrylic water based. I was surprised how fast it drys. What was cool is I made a small lidded box turned from a piece of driftwood I picked up last month on the Oregon coast. It took about 4 coats wiped on but I got a great finish from it. Both pieces I brought home were spalted.
    Great job again Kyler,
    Gary

ThePapa1947 Thanks Gary! I didn't really have a full plan with the shape. What I did want was to have a solid base, and I wanted to put a Vase shape in the center somewhere. Luckily for me it's hard to make Butternut look bad haha!
I have heard that polycrylic dries fast. I think I will have to try it. Having to wait hours complicates things a bit. I mostly use polyurethane for my natural edge bowls because it seems to help stabilize the bark and is easy to apply. With natural edge one trick I found is to flip the bowl upsides down on its bark on cardboard to dry between coats as you don't have to propping it up on something.
Great to hear the wood you brought home is spalted, that's always a bonus!
      Thanks again Gary.

Really nice, Ky! Great job... nice overall shape and I love the finish! Devil's can opener, LOL... I'm so glad that never happens to me... Yeah, right! You'll get there, buddy. Just keep practicing.

Billy Burt Thanks for the kind words and encouragement Billy! Butternut really takes an oil finish well. The skew and I have a love/hate relationship.....i can make rounded shapes easier with it, but the smallest wrong move and it's all over lol I guess back to rolling practice beads on softwoods for a while lol
      Happy turning Billy!

Ky the shape is gorgeous. To me the beads and shape look like a pepper mil ought to look. I’m referring to the mills I see in restaurants although this one is much nicer and unique. Clear as mud, I don’t think so, but the drawing is a nice touch. As always beautiful work.

Dennis Shurtz Thank you kindly Dennis! I knew I wanted a good solid bottom, and also a Vase shape somewhere in the middle. I'm not the best at drawing so I gave up trying to sketch the shape and went straight to the lathe lol during editing the Turning, I mostly had to just get rid of countless minutes of me looking at it and thinking what to do next. I think it also helps that it was made from Butternut, hard to make that stuff look bad! I'm glad the drilling diagram was helpful, I figured it would be the easiest way to explain it.
      Thanks again Dennis!

Great tutorial! Nice work. Getting ready to start my first crushgrind also. They're are so many different ideas for turning three things. Not sure crushgrind even has an instruction. Btw... Visit woodturner21 channel. I've picked up a ton on issuing the skew from this guy! He's like poetry in motion and users the skew almost exclusively to include roughing the blank!

    • @woodturnerky8556
      @woodturnerky8556  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Jeff DeLuca Thank you kindly Jeff! The crushgrind mechanisms come with instructions but many people found them quite minimal. But really it just comes down to getting the drilling right and it's all down to shaping after that. I use epoxy to set my mechanisms in, but there is a way to do it using a recessed groove up inside. I think it needs a special tool though. Brendan Stemp has some videos about that method. And yes I know what you mean about woodturner21, he's the epitome of skew work and production turning! I wish he would upload more to TH-cam, I think he's sticking more to instagram nowadays. He's a pleasure to watch and I actually learned quite a bit from him. I think I mentioned him in another video where I used the skew, because he is who we should all try to emulate. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

Hello Kyler, excellent work, very well explained and for that I congratulate you. I am very sorry for the time that has passed since you made this video to date but like Neeraj Grupta I would like to know where to buy the accessories to create this work. I am from Argentina and here I do not have this type of suppliers. I appreciate all kinds of help, cordial greetings.

Beautiful style and finish. The 25 year warranty on the hardware is great because store-bought pepper mills usually only last a few years. Great video.
