They don't even want you to stay that long these days because the longer you stay the more they have to pay you over the years. Many companies would prefer to start over and over again with rookies that they can pay less over the years.

The management ethics are horrendous today, but it seems partly due to a decline in overall mental health.
Accountability can seem non-existent, even when incidents are documented in detail.
HR goes momentarily blind and deaf if it doesn't protect the company, spinning the blame on employees.
"Oh well... harassment is subjective and that injury on the job can't be proven our fault.. hmm"

I was a branch manager in a health care company. I regularly went to college and community job fairs when I needed employees. I would make a point to talk to companies that had booths around me and some other bigger companies that I knew to be very good jobs kept showing up setting up booths.
I asked them why they couldn’t find employees and they told me they rarely hire. They said they go to the fairs as public relations and because they were asked to participate by the college or fair.
They would say they didn’t mind it because it’s a way for HR and recruiters and other people to get out of the office for a day and go out to lunch on the company.
I felt so bad for the people getting all excited and speaking with them and hoping for a call back and putting in all that effort and it was never going to happen.

I remember when I went to a job interview this one CEO set up for me with his rich angel investor (trust fund baby) friends. I paid $30 for parking only to have them tell me straight to my face they will hire their buddy’s daughter for a biotech sales position who didn’t even have a college degree. Hiring managers DON'T know what they're really looking for. I've found in my interviews that the people interviewing me have no idea of what the job truly initials nor do they know the true needs of the role...They drill you with repetitive and sometimes unrelated questions, you respond accurately and detail then they turn around and hire someone they know with NO true knowledge or experience to do the job. They're basing their decisions on who they like and know without even considering the incompetence they just placed in the role. They continue to waste your time and to end up not even being professional enough to let you know they moved forward with someone else.

I worked in operations at a large US company. The higher-ups absolutely looked at full-time employees as a financial burden. Even the ones who were knowledgeable, experienced, and kept everything moving forward. Higher-ups were constantly trying to figure out how to outsource jobs, who they could lay off, and whose job they could turn into a contract position. This was consistently reviewed down to a weekly timeframe even at the manager level. Absolutely no one's job was safe. They would lay people off THEN scramble to figure out how important that person was to the company. They tried so hard to NOT hire new people if they didn't have to.
I recognize that these practices are common now, but it was unsettling to see the desperation up close to cut jobs to make more profit for shareholders that quarter.

This is by far the hardest job market in my lifetime. In the past, I would send out no more than a dozen resumes and get 2 or 3 interviews and 1 or 2 offers. Now, these were positions I was qualified for. I was even getting unsolicited offers throughout the great recession.
Two years ago, I started looking for a job after covid. I sent out almost 150 resumes over 6 months for positions. Each resume was tailored to each job posting, too. I was well qualified or overqualified for every job I applied for. After 6 months, I finally got three interviews and three offers. I am still looking and applying unsuccessfully since. I was a manager and was told to ride people constantly to go faster. The owner spoke of his employees like they were all worthless, and they had nearly a 200% turnover rate of their employees.

Did you listen to the recruiter when he spoke about personal referrals. Did you speak with your friends about any opportunities in their own company that they work for?
It’s not about the quantity of applications, it’s also the quality of your applications.
Did you ever try and l and reach out to the HR manager by doing a google search for phone numbers that may not be available for everyone?
I think you must take ownership of your skills and apply only to jobs that you have the background skills needed for those roles.

@@fishercourtI custom tailored each resume to match the job I was applying. For over 20 years I worked on the other side of the hiring process so I'm aware of how it works. I also called about half of the places I applied. I stopped because I consistently got the same response, " we are reviewing applicants and will let you know if you are selected". Some even told me there is no need to call them, they will call me.
I did leverage the network I have and that how I obtained the current job I have where I am underemployed. The difficulty with leveraging my net work is I am looking in an area about 75 miles from where I previously worked so I am limited to personal networking since I have no professional network in this area.

I get rejected from jobs for "not having help desk experience", rejected for a job for something as simple as computer building and IP assignment. I've used a friend as a reference for an IT admin position but still to no luck.
This video shows me I should set up scripts to auto apply to any IT position just so I can get past HR to get an interview. I should probably also just straight up lie on my resume and put the job positions wish list on my resume.

Stop looking at jobs as some treasure chest and begin looking at them as stepping stones. The employer-employee relationship is fundamentally adversarial. The employer wants to pay you as little as possible while getting the most productivity out of you while you want to work the least (euphemistically: have a dream job) while getting paid a lot. You've got the right idea, looking at it like a series of obstacles to get through in order to "qualify". Once you're there though, you should immediately begin structuring your life to build upon (previous) skills; work on a side hustle and keep your options open to jump to a new position in 2-5 years time. Statistics show that people who change jobs every 2-4 years make more than those who stay in one company for 20+. You're just a number / tool to them, view them as the same.

This happened to me too. I know several people who are hiring managers or managers directly involved in the hiring process. Every single one said my application was excellent. Two told me it was one of the best they'd seen, yet I was applying to hundreds of jobs and got only 3 interviews in a year. I also ended up getting offered the job from all but one of those interviews,
So obviously, my resume wasn't the problem... Right? Well, nope, I finally found out about ATS and paid to run my resume through one to see what it saw. It didn't even see huge chunks of it, missed my entire skills section, and the sentences were jumbled to the point of being nonsensical.
I had to redo my application in the most bland and lifeless way possible, and my success rate went to one in a hundred or more to getting a reasonable amount of call backs and interviews.
Funny thing, I showed my friend, who is a hiring manager what she thought of my new resume, and she told me it looked far too generic and bland, and how my original was leagues better.
I was writing my resume like an actual person would read it, not considered whether or not a robot would be unable to recognize more complex formatting (and by "more complex formatting" I mean sections with boarders, text that wasn't completely black, a picture, and different font.
Edit: honestly this could so easily be addressed by just showing the applicant what the AI has processed and allow them to change the document if it refuses to read it correctly.
People want their resumes not to be thrown out of jobs they want and are qualified for. Hiring managers want the ATS to not throw out the resumes of good candidates due to simple technical errors. It seems like just adding a step where the process asks "This is what we got from your resume. If anything is inaccurate or missing, uploading a document with a simplified format may correct

    3) Doesn't really matter how you apply or how you interview - internal candidates will get the job most of the time.

The reason people shoot their shot is because most jobs are easy. Most people can do most jobs. Most people just gate keep to glamorize their job. Very few jobs require specialization or in depth knowledge. Of them almost none can’t be learned over time. Now for a senior position obviously the person should be highly proficient. But entry level people should just be competent and willing to learn.

1200ish apps, 15 first round interviews, 4 2nd round interviews, 3 that go beyond that including one that required 5 rounds and one that required 7.

Turns out their ATS wasn't able to read large sections of my resume, unbeknownst to me, and was automatically discarding my resume. Months later, I saw him again and he asked why I never put in my application, and told me about how the person who got hired wasn't performing well and that he wished I hadn't "changed my mind." I was baffled. I told him I applied 3 times, he never saw even a fragment of any of it. Me submitting my application was about as tangible to him as a ghost farting in the wind.

A person applying for specialized engineering or medical positions will not find 52 openings in your area in a 6-month period. It is safe to repeat the same three or four job openings with weekly status updates if possible. You can also status your recruiter calls and visits, as in this state they also count. Applying to anything just to fill a quota (when no one is even checking due to the volume of unemployment recipients) is not good practice. Be smarter in your job search.

Last one was October 2021 and i was able to get a contract job within two weeks. Then my ex boss called me in February 2022 and asked me to come back for a much higher salary and better title and I accepted it mainly because I needed health insurance due to a heart condition. Well fast forward to now and leadership changed along with duties and roles of my team. This past week someone that’s on the inside for the last 10 plus years told me my team is on the chopping block and they plan on laying off either at the end of October or sometime in March 2025. The issue is I’m now 63 and need a pacemaker replacement in 3 months and with all the tech layoffs it’s getting harder to find a decent job. Time to get my side hustles running. Hope I can before anything happens.

54:30 I don't disagree that losing a job is hard especially if you're in dire need of income but to say it's even in the same universe as losing a loved one... it's just not. Hard as it is to hear when it happens to you, you can always get another job. It may not be easy, it may not be as much as you were making before and it may take a while to land one but it can happen. You will never get a loved one back and if anyone values a job more or on the same level as a loved one I question how much you love that person. Equating these two is like saying a paper cut and a chronic condition uncurable condition like chron's are the same because they both cause pain. It's just not and I sincerely hope nobody plays ken a clip of him saying this at a funeral he goes to for his wife or child. Again, I get the meaning but it's not the psychological equivalent of losing a loved one. It's just not and anyone who for one second thinks that it is... I hope you stay blissfully unaware of that pain for as long as possible.

No. Just because you are introverted doesn't mean that you can't learn how to win friends and influence people. It's a key skill even for introverts.

Basically it has been like this for years. Networking comes in many ways. Charity, volunteering, interest groups, hobbies. You have to keep in mind unless you are going to be working at a funeral home you are going to have to interact with other people. Practice is how you do this effectively.

I have friends in my private life. I can make acquaintances and work well with my coworkers and be friendly with them in my business life, but very few of them align with my own morals and beliefs, so the majority are not suitable as friends.
Also, I don't go out for drinks or dinner with coworkers. I have a home and family and I like spending my time with them.

The critical problem with the 45 day from application to hire is that i need a job on day 5, not day 45, so if literally any other employer responds befor that 45 day period, im going with them 100% of the time.
I applied for an insurance job, got a call back that week saying i wasnt a good fit, well 6 months later after his top picks left directly after licensing i got a call asking if i was still interested. I absolutely told him it was incredibly unprofessional to expect someone to wait for another shot at the same job like they wouldnt persue other careers for 6 months. Im all for calling out entitled employee behaviour, but employers can be just as entitled and hold no cards

If I had that same attitude as you, I would not had this opportunity with the escape room. Some employers do not sound great or don't do a great job either. But also I know it makes you feel you were not the first choice either so then it feels disrespectful as well. I just wanted to share my opportunity because I let roll off my shoulders but because I was the wife's favorite before that maybe I could try again if I needed something again.
An escape room did that because the wife of the owner called saying I was her top choice but the owner hired someone on the spot. I interviewed with the wife. So I was sad but it wasn't the end of the world. Few months and I started doing temporary work and I got a call from the wife. We have an opening are you still interested? I was so appreciative of it but told her that I had another job. Year+ later I see another opening and I was going to do college so this job be great for the side. I applied and they sped everything up for me. I got to play 2 escape rooms by then because you play the room with a group in order to give hints for it. Then Covid 19... after so many months but I was the only one who stayed at the escape room. I hated to leave them after everything they done for me and I had nothing else planned yet. The owner and wife gave me Christmas and Birthday gifts. My dog passing away I was gifted so much stuff for comfort and support. Was okay for me to miss days of work to grieve. That escape room and the owner and wife took so much care for me. I even was gifted to take a trip to the cities with them to do escape rooms it was so fun! I was paid the most was $15 an hour and I got tips from groups but really I enjoyed the work and the people who owned the business. That made me stay until I got a full time job where I felt it was too much to try both.

They also didn't compete with the entire world, they competed with the city. Globalization screws over the people and the nation, it pretty much just benefits wall street and banks. The way things are trending isn't sustainable and there's nothing building up to change it. I fear something really dark is in our collective future.

I'm interviewing for a role where they are asking for a systems analyst but then they want project manager experience and full stack development experience for their internal projects and anything they hire out for. These are distinct roles they are cranking into one that pay allot less. I need a job. So yeah I'm going to apply. The fact that I have all those skills hopefully means I'll land it.

I feel like recruiters and hiring managers often focus on asking questions as a way to find reasons to eliminate them from contention vs asking questions that lead to conversations that uncover how well an applicant will perform the job.
    - in other words, I wish hiring managers would go into an interview as if the decision was already made to hire them. They just need to find out who this person is and what they can do, instead of asking arbitrary questions that may or may not indicate the future performance level of a person. If you assume this mindset for all applicants, you will quickly find yourself having stronger feelings of confidence and assurance with certain applicants over others.

I've been driving a truck for 34 years, got injured a week into a new trucking job, and once released for full duty I was let go. Finding a new job at 63 even as an experienced driver is now impossible. Unfortunately for me the ILU is about to go on strike and truckers nation wide are at minimum are about to be laid off and many will lose their trucks, their homes etc. At this point I'd take a dishwasher job, but no one wants an obviously old man. So, after two months of applying and being rejected I'm fully up against it...good luck out there! Yes gonna need it.

You can live comfortably in Cambodia or Vietnam and jump over the border every 90 days to renew your visa. Laos is higher and cooler but have no personal knowledge of it. Philippines is massively overpopulated and couldn't recommend it, even though they speak English. Thailand is too Westernized touristy and expensive but does have best Medicare care of those, as long as SS/MC holds up, then we're all chopped liver.😂🎉

Brian, the HR guy, always emphasizes the importance of asking questions throughout the interview, even from the start. However, my experience in most IT interviews has been quite the opposite. Interviewers usually don't allow me to ask questions until the very end, and when they do, I’m only given about a minute or so to ask, after they've rushed through a series of pre-prepared, loaded questions from a document. These questions often require context that I don’t have time to provide.
They treated the pre-prepared document as rigid, asking nothing beyond what was written. It’s always unsettling when I’m interviewed by 5-8 people, and it follows the same pattern-complete silence from the entire team except for one person who has been speaking since the beginning. Everyone else who just seemed to be there to take notes, with no engagement or interaction beyond that. Given that many of my IT interviews are structured this way, where it’s difficult to "interview the interviewer," and position myself for the rest of the interview.
What is the best way to approach this style of interview? I’m at a bit of a loss on how to handle it.

    • @RandomStuff-Nemo
      @RandomStuff-Nemo 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I imitate the interviewers. Take notes like them. Answer the questions they ask and ask them a question within my answer. Should a question they ask need more context, ask them to clarify, questioning their question. They may not like it, but you are working within their restrictions while showing you care about the interview.

There was mention of being qualified but not working at a particular job for a while say over 5 years. The catch-22 is that I’m not working in my field because I can’t land a job to maintain my work history. At some point people have to earn money so, as in my case, I worked in another industry. HR is literally cycling people out of markets because of their inability to get work and build or maintain a work history but the reason they cannot build or develop a work history is because of HRs barriers to hiring qualified candidates. When I say qualified candidates I refer to people who are fully educated in a particular field and still cannot get jobs. This has been going on a lot longer than the last four years.

    • @MissTShompagne
      @MissTShompagne 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Those people who are fully educated cannot get jobs because they do not have the experience. Lots of people are fully educated with bachelors degrees and master degrees but these companies want them to have the experience upon completion of a degree field and they are not willing to give them that experience.
Bryan said in one of his online posts that I heard for the first time: "experience trumps a degree".
