    The ability to jump introduces a subtle yet profound concept known as ludonarrative dissonance. The freedom to move along the vertical axis allows the player to travel directly orthogonal to the main goal of the game. Very few games can manage to handle this apparent contradiction without compromising the agency given to the player.

    The dialogue and editing here is just so genius. The completely ignored quote. The random out-of-pocket clip. The repeated stale semi-joke of "let's *jump* into it." The slight pauses to sound intelligent and revelatory combined with slick visuals explaining ridiculously simple concepts. Even the timing of everything with the generic background music is exactly the same as a real video essay. Bravo. You took an already perfectly-executed basic parody and furthered it to even greater heights.

    • @ikagura
      @ikagura ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Nintendo still is responsible for perfecting and making more common game design elements.
      Sure Pac-Man was the first video game mascot but Jumpman aka Mario is the first to have even more games for him and making gaming mascots trendy in the next years.
      Nintendo popularised motion gaming with the Wii, they also made official non-retrocompatibility based retrogaming with the Virtual console and they also created handheld gaming as a whole.
      Inventing and popularising things are two different concepts.

    I hate when video essays have an interesting question to answer, like "What happened to *insert old series here?*" And it makes you think "Hmm, what DID happen to that old series I use to play as a kid?" So you click on the video thinking it's going to give you a straight forward answer. Only for the first 30 mins to be a history lesson on how the game was made, 30 MORE mins on how the game's story progresses, and THEN the last 5 mins answers the question with "It didn't sell well I guess idk."

    An intriguing inversion of the "jump" trope can be found in the original Deus Ex (2000), in which the trenchcoat-donned hero, JC Denton, approaches a massive ventilation shaft on the surface of Area 51. The trillionaire antagonist, Bob Page, encourages the player, shouting "Jump, you can make it!" However, it is revealed to be sarcasm if the nanoaugmented sunglasses-wearer jumps into the shaft, being that he, in fact, does not make it, but is instead shredded to bits by an industrial fan. I think video game developers, particularly indies with the freedom to experiment artistically, could learn from Deus Ex and develop new, daring game modes in which deadly holes, perhaps "Pitfalls", also exist to trick the player.

    Haven't seen anyone else call it out specifically, but "The player, that's you" is my favorite fucking bit. I feel like I hear it all the time and it never adds anything, but somehow makes it sound just slightly elevated
