The ability to jump introduces a subtle yet profound concept known as ludonarrative dissonance. The freedom to move along the vertical axis allows the player to travel directly orthogonal to the main goal of the game. Very few games can manage to handle this apparent contradiction without compromising the agency given to the player.
Was waiting for someone to force in that pretentious concept that was made up on the spot

At least for games, it’s a much bigger time commitment, so that style of video essay has slightly more value.
i like putting those on while doing something else because paying attention to them specifically often makes me want to yell at the screen especially since half the time of the analyzations ARE made by the person they’re terrible

Imagine a world where Mario actually has to do a lot of plumbing because he can't just jump over everything to escape work. Where he has to actually put up his dukes and fight the turtles that he can no longer soar into the air and stomp on like some wrathful stereotype deity. Where the princess being in another castle means he has to take a long trip on a train or in a carpool because there's no way for him to just hop onto an airship. And eventually he just sinks into depression and withers away. I want to play _that_ Mario game! =D

I hate when video essays have an interesting question to answer, like "What happened to *insert old series here?*" And it makes you think "Hmm, what DID happen to that old series I use to play as a kid?" So you click on the video thinking it's going to give you a straight forward answer. Only for the first 30 mins to be a history lesson on how the game was made, 30 MORE mins on how the game's story progresses, and THEN the last 5 mins answers the question with "It didn't sell well I guess idk."
I hate video essays that do that… they pull random facts out of their asses to stretch the video out…
My personal favorite are the elaborate and overly drawn out metaphors for concepts that could have been explained in a simple sentence
Gotta reach that 1 hour mark Y’know
My favorite part HAS to be the "game descriptors" and the fact that, apparently, Nintendo made every single game ever made

As well as orchestrate a high stakes ransom for the president’s life
My favorite jump is the one where you go up by a certain amount of units per second, followed by going down a certain amount of units per second.
Actually it was Van Halen that invented the Jump, though it was a very linear affair until the House of Pain was in effect, and made it a far more free form affair, you could jump around anywhere
But it really became mainstream when Criss Cross made you Jump, jump.

Nintendo still is responsible for perfecting and making more common game design elements.
Sure Pac-Man was the first video game mascot but Jumpman aka Mario is the first to have even more games for him and making gaming mascots trendy in the next years.
Nintendo popularised motion gaming with the Wii, they also made official non-retrocompatibility based retrogaming with the Virtual console and they also created handheld gaming as a whole.
