Its great you gave a lesson on roundabouts. However, there will always be problems because newbies do not know the area. Once in a roundabout, they realize they are in the wrong lane then make quick and unexpected lane changes. It is best to understand this happens every day. When driving in the roundabouts, move SLOWLY, keep a distance, and always expect the unexpected.
You are right and if someone doesn’t know the geography the smart thing to do is to not make quick, unexpected changes and endanger others but continue on and double back when it is safe to do so. It is usually not far from the next roundabout.
Hey Rusty. I've been a Traffic School and Defensive driving instructor for over a decade. I caught your outline regarding The Villages Roundabouts. Your observations for negotiating Roundabouts makes good sense. However, you ignored a glaring issue regarding lanes and road lines. You "assume" that drivers will pay attention to the lane directions signs. However, drivers also recognize through experience and state laws that they may drive across/thru dashed lines. This accounts for why drivers frequently ignore the signs (if they see them at all) for maintaining their lane. If The Villages want to reduce the incidence of violating a lane in a Roundabout, then a solid white or double yellow line needs to be painted between the lanes on the road before the turn. Otherwise, the same crash risks will remain the same.
The interrupted lines are for merging into the inside circle from the entering left lane and out of the inner circle for people wanting to exit the inner circle. If you had solid lines no one would ever be able to enter/or exit the inner circle. The solid lines and interrupted lines are painted in such a way that it allows this to occur in the safest manner. what really needs to be taught to people is that you need to have chosen either right lane or left lane well before entering the traffic circle. A good marker for this is at the reduce speed to 20 mph sign or before. What I have learned is to assume that whoever is next to you does not know what they are doing and anticipate this accordingly. (eg Never speed up in a traffic circle)
Rusty I HATE roundabouts, they scare me to death. I'm an intelligent person but when I enter a roundabout I panic and become stupid! I think there must be a vortex as I enter the roundabout that drains my brain and I don't know what to do. My son has even rode with me to walk me through the process of roundabouts, just like your video and it has helped but I still avoid them whenever possible. Seriously, can't we just drive in a normal straight line!!
Thanks for watching! If we had lights at each one of those intersections it would take three times as long to get around. Seriously, 1. Follow the green sign. 2. Know that if you are going to go straight or a right turn. Ok in the outside lane. IF...you are going straight or left (third exit) be in the inside lane. That will get you through most of the roundabouts. It really is that simple. Subscribe Button for new videos: bit.ly/3aToJ3H.
Oh no! Not roundabouts again. 🙈😂😂 We live in the UK but visit The Villages regularly so we have witnessed the ummm “various interpretations” of how to navigate them. The “all the way around in the inside lane” is a favourite. 🤬
Rusty, great video as always, especially the roundabouts. My understanding is TV is not doing the updates to Sumter. They decided what they wanted, drew the plans, and the villagers had to pay for the architect plans, and have to pay for the demolition and construction. Which at last I saw was over 3 million dollars.
Even if you are doing everything right in a roundabout traffic crosses over. Look at it like a clock. If I’m in the inside lane and come in at 6:00 & want to exit at 12:00. The car coming in the outside lane at 3:00 has to yield to me to exist at 1200 before they continue to 9:00. You always yield to the inside lane while they exit. You yield at any dotted line & never change lanes in the roundabout.
I love your tutorial and wish people would just pay attention to signage when they’re driving. But, even for those who are oblivious to the signs, the arrows are painted on the street right in front you!! Goodness, why is it so hard? Living in the roundabout capital of the world means this is a daily occurrence for me ALL the time - not just the winter. I feel your pain.
It's very simple if you just look at the sign. Also stay inside if you are going to make a left turn. The lines are planned to let you out and make the other yield to you. Subscribe Button for new videos: bit.ly/3aToJ3H.
Shouldn’t the DVM be doing its job by placing SIMPLE signs at the point of entrance….. and a few in the roundabout. Here in MI we have very few problems because we don’t post one very confusing sign too far from the roundabout.
If you watched the video EVERY roundabout has a giant sign like the one on the thumb and in the video. Once you are in the roundabout its a little to late for the sign. These are not real big so you are in and out of them fast. Subscribe Button for new videos: bit.ly/3aToJ3H.
A good way to avoid the roundabouts in The Villages, you can drive your golf cart instead of the car in the multimodal paths you will avoid the roundabouts
And you have now become the problem. The lines in the roundabout will give you the way out. Try it and you will find out. If you are in the inside lane by the time you get to the third exit the lines will allow you to get out and the other person has to yield to you...The other person being a person who just entered the roundabout. Now you are just causing a problem and people that are next to you have no idea what you are about to do.
Roundabout presentation and explanation was spot on! Good job.

Yes, the painted lines are misleading, and that is what people seem to follow.

Those are some strange roundabouts with 2 lanes
Definitly keeps the traffic moving. Subscribe Button for new videos: bit.ly/3aToJ3H.

Just as a note, my wife is too young for Medicare and Crystal was able to help my wife through the maze of ACA plans!

You only went over one type of roundabout the others allow for other maneuvers.

People go as fast as possible in the round abouts, making it difficult to navigate them safely.
Fly our real flag every day!!!!!!!!!!

There are roundabouts for golf carts as well, so no way to completely avoid them.
I’ll just stay in the right lane, I’m confused how can you make a left turn, at what point are you able to get out of the round about
