I went to the 2016 RTR and yes Quartzsite made me very sad after a couple weeks. Everything was brown, rocky and very dusty. Turned around and headed back east!
The trees are Ironwood. The big tent dates are Jan 18-26. Starting on the 17th I have a booth across the street from the Big Tent (row J, booth 22) and would love to meet you if you have time to drop by. Sounds like your schedule is pretty tight though. 💯 true about dental work in Algodones. 10th winter in Q and that’s always where I get my work done to. Happy and safe travels!
Lot's of us going through the hum drums these days! I hope you get to feeling better soon. I have been working on getting my mojo back too. I have heard many good things about the dentists in Mexico and have had several friends who go there for their dental work.
Another informative video on a great Mexican dental plan . That's where I'm going !! You're the best , I hope your blues fade to semi or full happiness , or maybe just settle for contentment . Thanks Matty !!
I took my first trip down to Algodones about 3 weeks ago. I enjoyed my little visit. I wasn't down there long, but I had the best shrimp tacos I've ever had. And I will definitely go back.
I'm about 4:33 in, but wanted to let you know that back when I used to travel a lot I had something called Global Entry, which is a trusted traveler program through U.S. Customs that allowed me to skip the lines coming back from Mexico and use the Sentri-pass lines, I think they were called, that are essentially just fast-tracked lines where I never waited at all. I'd just walk past the lines and go straight through. It might be worth checking into. I basically filled out an online application, made an appointment at DFW Airport, met with an agent to make sure I wasn't a smuggler or something, and away I went. It was a pretty painless process and I think it might have cost me $100 at the time.
Hang in there. Your ramblings are always interesting. I cracked up when you said you were hitting the camera button instead of recording. I've done that myself so many times! 😅
You’re not alone, brother. Remember that we all get the blues from time to time. That’s absolutely normal. Think of all your followers here and how we are with you in spirit always
I recently had one crown at a dentist near my home. Cost was $1200 and insurance paid a little over half. Any type of medical work in the U.S. is always expensive even with insurance. Take care and I hope your dental work is minimal this year!
Hi Matty I went to Los Algodones in December. I had 3 fillings and a cleaning for 160.00. Many places were able to provide appointments within 2 days . Happy with my outcome. Go have some Fun!
The entry into Mexico in algodones is a little different now. It’s a farther walk and you come into town In a different place. You still enter in the same way but then the new walkway follows along the Mexico side of the wall heading west a bit until you get to a street where you can go left into town. At least that’s how it was when I was there before the holidays. Anyway, have fun! Enjoyed the video!
Aloha I have your back mi amigo, winter time is here for to long dark time indeed.glad you are taking care of yourself in many ways. Soul, mind, body with spirit!,, good vibes Mahalo ,,Bishop Brendan
Smart man leaving your van and walking in. I park my car, leave my handbag and put on my worst shoes, ever since I witnessed somebody get robbed for a brand new pair of Jordans and the person took off on a bicycle 😢 my goodness, it made me mad but the deep sadness almost made me sick!
Matty, I’m sorry you’re in this headspace that feels like it doesn’t make sense, I’m Valerie by the way, I learned about you from watching some of Amanda and Wynston videos 😊 iirc you have had some personal loss as well as some loss in the nomadic community, maybe that’s been in the background, but the good thing is you noticing how you are doing mentally, that’s a good starting point to getting all four tires back in the road to feeling like yourself. Thanks for sharing about your dentist, I really need to research this, maybe have a dental vacation lol!
It sounds like you have this whole dental situation figured out. My husband‘s grandfather used to go down for his dental work as well. He lived in Green Valley, Arizona, which is quite close to the border. He absolutely swore by the service is down there!
Marty how about a video of places to resupply in quartzite discount grocery etc, the how about another hide a lot where to park in Yuma when border crossing maybe a couple restraint reviews over there etc. would all be valid content and paving the way
That is one monster tent. Wow, never seen anything like that before. I heard you talking about the Mexican dentist. That sounds like a good idea. Do you know of any resources or did you do any videos on how to find a dentist in Mexico? I cannot afford anything where I live. The US is too damn expensive. and getting worse - not to mention going crazy,
Heads up…the entrance to Algodonas puts you out onto a different street now, NOT by the eyeglass place and big pharmacy, but a couple blocks further down.
Tennessee Silver Tongue. You defiantly got the dialog info voice down to a tee; along with making me wish I had my van up and going again. Go to the hot springs well near Holtville for a change of pace. I was at the RTR and ouch, I still like Holtville much better.
Your doing great Matt! Keep up the content. I was at Hi Jolly BLM Capt site Sunday, but very little in privacy, I went to the scadden wash BLM campsite. I was going to Dome and see what it was like. It was my first time exploring Quartzite. It's spread out that's for sure. Sure was chilly. Mostly the trees in Quartzite are iron wood and Mesquite. The tree in video is iron wood.
Get a (few) good book to read, learn a hand craft, read about a particular area to visit, plan a different route to a familiar destination, methods to stay busy and creative. What are you curious and enthusiastic about?
We haven’t forgotten about dear Mugsy….may he rest in peace. Word in the tunnels is that his brothers Bugsy, Hugsy and Tugsy are still searching for his murderer!
Those are ironwood trees I think. Stop by the RTR and say hi to a few fans! Or maybe I'll catch you at Skoolie. Oh, and I got $5k worth of dental work done in Algodones for $1500, yes a good value. I think that the line to drive back to the USA was even slower than the wait on foot, so I'll walk next time too.
Lol I'm a horror show trying to film. I'll think I'm filming then hit the button to stop which actually started filming and it's a video of my pocket or the inside of my purse and you can hear me singing or ordering at a drive thru😂
Was the second place Palmosa? I heard it is deserted this year compared to last. Groups I know that were there last year are at Scadden Wash or just east of the dog park.
Matty you are too precious! Don't laugh, but you are. I have a question and I'm sure you must have mentioned it at some point, but can I find that video? how would I? Lol! So I'm wondering what kind of mileage you get as far as fuel consumption for your van.
Whenever I had dental appointments in tj several years ago, the receptionist would give me a medical speed pass at check-out to get through the border lines super fast. Do they still do that?
@MattyVanHalen hopefully you can ask when you check in at your appointment and see if you can score a medical pass. Any dental surgery was eligible for the pass. Cleanings or simple fillings didn't qualify.
First time I ever heard of a "medical speed pass" and I have lived along the Texas/Mexico border specifically Del Rio, TX with Ciudad Acuna, Coahuila since I was a kid. My family and most of our friends have always gone to Mexico for dental, vision, regular doctors as well as prescriptions.
WHEN YOU HAVE NO PLACE ELSE TO GO, ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO BE A HAPPY CAMPER? WHEN YOU FIND THAT ONE DIAMOND IN QUARTZSITE, ITS A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH SPOT, BUT ITS STILL A SPOT TO ROUGH IT OUT!
I’m looking for a group to go to Mexico for medical services. I need my Blood Pressure Meds and it’s too much trouble to get them here on the road. I also got here too early. I had to get upgrades to my Trailer so I wanted to get here early. The Dune Buggy’s and Off Road Vehicles kicking up dust is unbearable at times.
Very helpful information re; going in and out of Mexico. Question: If you want to save on prescription meds, do you bring a prescription from your American doctor or do you need to go to a doctor in Mexico and get a new prescription?
Thanks for sharing your journey and being authentic. And great tips for Los Algodones. I’ve done the same. It’s the best way to get great dental at affordable prices. 🎉
Hey..I don't have the moody blues like you..the Q has did nothing but frustrate me..I need the forest..was here last year. But this year is way different..I have cussed out the pharmacy, the transfer dump guy and post office..they only work part time..open not even 2 hours..lol then a lunch hour..I'm just ready to get the hxll out of here..and I used to get awards for excellent customer service..anyway now I'm rambling..😅 I hope we meet one day..I will get you out of these blues..much love..😊❤😊
Here is what you need to remember about Mexico. If you are arrested and charged with a crime, you are assumed Guilty and under their law you have to prove your innocence. That's not easy to do.
Algodones is very careful about crime. Dental is VERY big business for that town. They aren’t about to have that money flow dry up because of crime. I have been going to the dentist there for years and get excellent care. For other parts in Mexico right now I would think twice about going to. Anyway that is my experience. Carry on!
Listening to you talk about Los Algodones is funny. We’re in Argentina, 13 countries away and never had a problem in 17,000 miles driving Latin America. We’re parked for the night off highway 40 in the middle in Patagonia listening to the wind. Travel shouldn’t be a hassle. Best of luck and don’t be scared of Mexico.
Hi Matty, fun time with Bella riding the e-bike. Do you stay in your van when you go to the dentist? I need work but didn’t know if I could stay in my van. Do you feel secure leaving your van? Los Algodones is very popular for dental Cartel stuff is pretty scary . Glad to hear they are patrolling
Matty thanks for the information about going over to Los Algodones for dental work and prescriptions. I always appreciate what you have to say. It seems easy to walk into town, but what about getting back? Do you have to have a passport or is my drivers license, social security card, etc. enough. I've never had to get a passport. Keep up the great info.
It looks like you are parked almost exactly where I am. I will scan the distance around me and see if I spy you. I would love to meet you in the flesh. I am down from southern Oregon for a few weeks. I also have my dental done in Mexico at Venus dental. I just adopted a rescue dog from Nashville last week. She is in my van with me now! You would love to meet her. The name she came with is Bella. I am keeping it. In the beginning of this video you said “Bella” and she looked up to see who was calling her! 😍🐶

❤ to you Matty. Thank you for the gentle ramblings. Hope you're feeling uplifted soon, from Ottawa Ontario Canada. Dreaming of travels for myself.
Hang in there Matty, it will get better! Hope you enjoy Schoolie.

Quartzite makes me so happy. I get sad when I have to come back to homebase in Alabama. I have to come back every three months for pain clinic.
PRAYING for you Matty!

Spent a month in Reedsport. One of the best times of my life. We pretty much lived off of the land. Winchester Bay Area.

Hi Matty. Have fun..stay safe...do your thing..... Deborah 🇨🇦
It might make interesting content to stay at the hotel in Los Algodones when you go for your dental work.
Make your appointments for later in the day at Los algodonos. There is no line later in the afternoon to get back over.
GET A CANINE...there is one out there just waiting for you❤❤❤❤

FYI: The dentist place will give you a discount to stay in their hotel!
Hi Matty
Hey Matty - I'm here in Scadden Wash too, in a women's group. The weather (wind) has been a bit depressing, and the hard ground is a bit hard to take.
Yes. Very sad
So you do have to make an appointment? Is there a website to go to to find out that information of who to call?
I am not Mattie, just a local in Yuma. No. Just go there and they will take a look and tell you what they can do for you.
Hey..I don't have the moody blues like you..the Q has did nothing but frustrate me..I need the forest..was here last year.
