Hey everyone! After spending more time with the Steam Deck, I've noticed the colors seem richer on the screen, and I think adding a glossy screen protector might have helped reduce the anti-glare effect. It's definitely improved the look for me.
Yup! I did the same thing. I have the 1TB model with etched screen and ended up putting a screen protector immediately but you can see some of the color’s richness comes back when you add a screen protector. I don’t think I’d want to use my Steam Deck with no screen protector anyways lol
I think the etched screen issue has gotten out of hand. People make it sound worse than it actually is, and that makes other buyers ‘see’ the issues without being necessarily sure about them. It’s just like a placebo “hate” effect for something you wouldn’t even notice by yourself in the first place.
Nice vid, I ordered this OLED 1TB a couple of days ago & I'm looking forward to it being delivered. I've been putting off the purchase as I use a gaming PC for my gaming needs, I do hope I can give this Steam Deck justice.
Play a game with HDR and you'll be blown away. Something like Ori and the Will of the Wisps really shows off the OLED in its best light (no pun intended). Also, the reduced colour vibrance is only in high ambient light conditions, where with the glossy you'd be dealing with reflections instead. I much prefer the anti glare to distracting reflections, but YMMV.
Thanks, I wish more games support HDR at the moment, but I’ll have to check those out!
this made me buy it! thanks ashley!
Hope you like it!
I just gotta say, that is an EXPERT level skin application!
I put an HD clear protector on my etched glass oled now the colors are richer and blacks deeper. And I like the gloss look, looks cleaner. But I wanted the Limited edition for the transparent shell
Yeah, the glossy screen protector really helped. The limited edition is so nice! I wish it was still available when I got it lol oh well
Ashley thank you so much for the unboxing, I'm planning to give myself a birthday present next month. I'm definitely getting the steam deck oled
Nice! Happy early birthday 🎂
@@techwithashley 🙂 Thank you
Just ordered mine! Hope I love it!!!
Congrats!
Hey! I have that same little "plant" on your desk! 😃
The screen difference is obvious as I watch on a Z Fold5.
Yeah, watching the footage back I could tell the difference but at first I felt bamboozled 😆 🤣
Great video. What HD screen protector did you do with? I do not see many for the 7.4 in screen of the OLED
The screen protector is from Jsaux (linked in the description). The screen protectors work for both LCD and OLED.
@@techwithashley thanks! I'm not worried about the anti-glare as much as protection, makes me paranoid lol. Hopefully the HD protector on the anti-glare etched glass doesn't degrade the picture much
It looks like it improved it well for me, but I don’t have the 512GB to compare it to. I can say I’m happy with it though.
Have you had any issues with mura effect (graininess) on the 1tb model?
Can’t say I have
I'll buy the steam deck oled 1tb in june but what docking station can I use with it? Thanks for helping me out I appreciate it
The dock from Valve is a good choice, of course. There are plenty options on Amazon, but I would make sure it can charge the deck while in use (the one from Valve does this).
i just order mine today, after careful consideration on Lenovo Legion Go, and the Asus Rog Ally. The lenovo legion was just to big, and the Asus looked to me personally very ugly. That why I went with the Oled 1tb as well. How long did it take for your to arrive? Great video
I received mine six business days after putting in my order.
@@techwithashley that is good to hear. Thank you
You're welcome, I hope you enjoy your new steam deck!
I’m going with the one you don’t like the ally cause I need to be able to play any game on the deck you can’t even play Fortnite cause it’s a epic game
@@31shyt thats good for you I have a gaming laptop so i usually play on that. But too me the ally, i was excited in pictures and stuff. But when i went to best buy and held it my hands saw the screen. I was like “is this it” idk.
Mines arriving very soon. Same model. My first deck ever. First handheld PC ever. I'm an original switch owner. I love my switch but my switch is almost 5 years old. So I upgraded with top tier OLED Deck
That's a nice upgrade, congrats!
idk why you are saying it’s minimal difference between LCD VS OLED the difference is actually insane the OLED is amazing
Hi, some models of OLED steam deck suffer from really bad muira, although it is somewhat rare to get a OLED panel with really bad muira, still good to know. That might also hinder the visuals in comparison to the LCD steam deck. One of the big features of the OLED deck is the bigger battery + 6nm upgrade efficiency. Around 40-50% more bettery life when compared to the LCD model. At 6w I can play PSP games for around 9 hours on average.
Also have you tried other games with inky blacks? Limbo comes to mind as the game is mostly black/grey/white. I don't know much about Stray but some games put a weird grey/green filter in post processing that increase the black levels, might have had a part with what you experienced.
Also also, try out "Ori and The Will of Wisps" and "Tetris Effect" on the OLED. The HDR implementation in these games is insane.
Cheers.
Thanks for the info, I'll look into other games that have a true black, which a lot of games I've been playing recently don't. After a little more time, I can see where things look richer in color, and putting a glossy screen protector did help as well. Maybe it's not as "rich" as the 512GB considering the material used, but for now, ignorance is bliss, and I'm happy.
The black one looks way better, it's night and day in comparison.
I wish i had a steam deck even the lcd would do fine. 😢
If you are from usa ,you could get one used for 200 dollars ,idk
@@patozarantonello8572i got lcd 512 gb + 512 gb sd card for 330 insane deal
@@patozarantonello8572 still cant afford that amount, im in the uk. 😢
GameStop sells steam decks for $341.99 if you know or have pro membership and GameStop offering $25 off spend more then $200 comes to $321.99 for 512gb lcd model not bad deal.
@@dbozgt nice i got mine locally from bulgaria 340 dollars for 512 gb lcd + a fast 512 gb samsung sd card, sick deal
1 day ago my dad brought steam deck oled 512GB on Saturday!
Nice video
You wouldn’t think much of it but the screen of an etched glass screen is very fuzzy and blurry compared to the glossy screen it’s a huge difference. That’s why you don’t see a difference in the quality of the image because that etched glass screen completely ruins the quality of the image on screen.
Another review of SD i like it, but let me ask why not a different device but with (hudge) better Z1 Extreme ? i know there is Win11 but you can install Steam OS - Chimera OS and also then Z1 Extreme has better performance and was stronger to bigger Game :)
Steam Deck has better screen, better battery, better controls, better support from manufacturer. Unless you desperately need to play modern games at slightly better (still not good) fps while losing out on mobility and the above benefits, then go for ROG.
@k.constantine i can agree with this, yes ROG has better performance then SD but SD has two trackpad, ROG doesnt, for better option for Modern Game (like you said) is Legion GO, has one track pad, honestly i dont have SD and any different devices but i looking for one to buy. When i see Xbox emulation on Steam Deck Halo 3 have a problem with everything and it was almoast not playable
SD has far better performance at lower wattages than any Z1 device. Above 15W the Z1 excels, but at cost of battery life. At
I agree with what everyone else is saying. I also have the Rog Ally, which serves its purpose, but the battery life (even on the LCD model) is better on the SD and I enjoy its console-like experience.
You don’t have to buy another Steamdeck just buy a glossy Screen protector and you are good
I did put a glossy screen protector on the OLED
What's the verdict on that?@@techwithashley
In uk the steam deck 1 tb Oled is 569 . The rig ally z1 the extreme version is 599 . Imo I would have gone with rog ally many things at better on rog . But for 30 extra for rog ally depends on what sites here some codes are reducing the price by 50 on rog ally so would get quite same price as steam deck
I have the Rog Ally as well, but wanted the OLED SD instead of the LCD.
If you care about the batery and better sceen get the steam deck oled ,if you want the pure raw performance, get the rog ally ,it got double the perfomance of the steam deck
Having both Rog Ally extreme and the Oled... I mist say I nearly always pick up the Steam deck over the asus unless i wanna play moded games, cod or cpu demanding titles (mostly mmos in my case)
My 1tb oled came with a 1.5 meter power supply not the 2.5 advertised on the steam store. ☹️
Oh that's weird! Maybe you should contact them.
I just wanted re experience that clean crisp first look at a new steam deck 🤤..should gon slower😅
do you all feel comfortable using it as is, or should a case be a must have?
Yes, I think it sits comfortably in the hand, and a case isn't needed unless you want to add a kick stand, which can be helpful when playing on a tabletop
better if u was take the 512 version for better screen than the anti galre screen ...
Well there also the psp 3000 that changed the handheld experience like the downloading games and then the follow up to that he psp go then the psp vita 1000 and the 2000 but there was the Nintendo game boy but don’t get upset but everything about the switch was the vita when it comes to hook ups to the TV and the docking system started with the psp go but the psp vita ended up being better and the switch is just up to date hardware and firmware but I really like the video thank you thank you
i have it i love but screen i just put glass screen protector yeah it made better .......
Yeah, screen protector helps!
I don’t know why they wouldn’t upgrade the screen to 1080p, 800p just doesn’t cut it
resolution saves battery if u played games on laptop on battery with performance profile
It can barely run recent games at upscaled 800p and older games sometimes struggle hitting native 800p at 60 fps no reason to update resolution without updating the gpu
@@MikeCriticalOps yep that's why optimised settings and lowest settings to play games on battery or else plugin play.
Just add a glass screen protector and the ugly edged effect will go away.
Yep, it looks so much better!
can l play gta 5 in this device
Yes, runs at 60fps.
Yeah it runs really good.

Steam deck is outdated it's sad just forb2 years and can't play new games like Dragon's Dogma 2 thank goodness I have ROG ally extreme.
Show me your ally playing dragons dogma 2
@@12gwendal Rog ally extreme works. Why should I show you? you can look it up here on youtube. Steam deck is outdated. Steam Deck can't play new AAA games anymore.. it's sad it lasted just 2 years kewk.
