    When I was a kid, I tried to see how far I could get without ever picking up the sword. I ended up getting all the way to Ganon using just the other weapons (getting them was a chore, to say the least). But you can't beat Ganon without the sword so that was as far as I could get. I took a pic of myself next to the TV screen to show that I didn't have the sword in my inventory. I sent it to Nintendo Power and they printed it.

      Woah!! That's a major feat right there. I can't fathom rupee grinding swordless. Well done.

    The original Zelda was the first game that I ever saved up to buy with my allowance because, after I first played it at a friend's house, I knew that just playing it at friends' house wasn't going to be good enough and that I couldn't wait until Christmas.

      A wise decision! Sounds like there really was nothing like Zelda or at its caliber.

    not ashamed to admit that it took me until I was 22 to beat this game and still had to use a guide.

    No guides. Beat it in 1st grade, 1989. I still play it regularly. Played it for 2 years my dad said. I know my life was Zelda and it definitely took me forever. No booklet, map, or instructions either. Didn't know about Up + A to save until I was about 11 or 12.

  • @Foxaris

    You pretty much had to go around bomb everything and burn every bush. The dungeon hidden on the other side of the river in the mountains on the second quest took forever to find. Realizing that it was possible to walk through certain walls in some dungeons on the second quest also took forever. You just had to try everything and fully explore the map, but I remember getting stuck at those two points. It's a good game and one of the first games I ever played. I beat it when I was around 7 years old, though it took me a couple of months back then as I had no guide.

    When I was a kid I was given Gunsmoke for Christmas and it was my first NES game aside from Mario/Duck Hunt.
    My parents said they didn't know which games were good but there was a Gunsmoke TV show so maybe this is good, but if I want we can go to the store and exchange it for another game.
    I went ahead and took a look at the store and exchanged Gunsmoke for Zelda I worried I disappointed my parents a little bit but I think that was probably the better choice.
    I must not have been into Gunsmoke at all though to have turned down the opportunity to play a new game RIGHT NOW instead of waiting to get a different one.

    I was born in 84 so I didn't get into NES and Master System until later in their life, but I do remember asking my mom to buy me Zelda and she didn't want to because it had skeletons 😆 (I lived in a Christian household)... so instead she got me Mike Tyson's Punch-Out (a game filled with realistic violence, go figure) which thankfully was a great game... but because of that I didn't really play the original Zelda until I was older and by that time the sequels had surpassed it. I played Link To The Past a lot though.

    • @keatonreviews
      @keatonreviews  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Lol at least you got a good story out of it! And hey LttP is no slouch either.

  • @Jeremy-ql1or
    @Jeremy-ql1or 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Anyone who likes A Link to the Past (the third game) should check out the version called Parallel Worlds. It is an unofficial overhaul of the game using the original code. It is excellent but if you are not a hardcore gamer I would suggest using save states as there is some timed stuff that is really difficult.

    I love this format, for years I wish a video like this existed for Dragon Quest where older japanese gamers are interviewed about the first few games, how they felt and their reaction to the game when it was released, and the sequels where people were skipping work and school to get a copy. From modern standards they've very limited RPGs but I always imagine a player in the 80s staying up till 3 in the morning grinding and thinking how immersive the world it and how it doesn't get any better than this lol. (I don't expect you to do a video of DQ, just woolgathering) Anyways, great video!

      Aww thank you so much, I love this feedback.
      You'd be surprised (or should I say slurprised lol). I've played through 8 mainline Dragon Quest games in the past 4 years so the series hits close to home. igotkings (featured in this video) also grew up alongside the first Dragon Quest game and has a strong history with it.
      Who knows? Maybe a Dragon Quest interview / montage is in the cards after all!

    I recently went back tontry to give zelda a fair try. I had a yardsale cooy in thenearly 90s when i was 7 or 8 years old. It was sumoly too hard for me back then. When i played it recently i got the book the map and try to simulate what it would be like to buy new. I had a great time, did some research on its history and marketing from the time, nintendo came out with a special magazine or something that had a lot of info that was considered essential to the experience, it had a bunch of tips and tricks.
    One thing that sort of surprised me was that at least in japan this game was targeted towards older kids and young adults. I played the Famicom version because it has slightly better audio fun time would recommend.

    • @keatonreviews
      @keatonreviews  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That must have been tough trying to figure out what to do completely on your own. With guidance, the game is a lot of fun.
      Famicom version could be good - the Zelda 2 Famicom audio is really good as well.
      Thanks for sharing your experience!

Its been around before my time and never gave much thought as to the year it came out.
