    I have some thoughts after watching the film and reading some of the comments thread.
    In terms of species survivability, having a diverse genetic “stock” is much better than having a uniform genetic stock. Evolution is like cheating in a card game: the more cards you have in your hand/sleeve, the better your odds are of having a winning hand. In this case, the cards represent diversity in genetic traits, and the hand you are trying to beat is the environmental conditions. Since environmental conditions change over time, different genetic traits will thrive during different periods of time. If all members of a species have identical genetic traits, they will share the strengths and weaknesses of that trait. Sometimes certain sets of genetic traits will survive for very long periods of time, as seen in certain types of shark. However, if the environment changes such that the trait is no longer survivable, a monogenetic species with that trait faces a severe risk of extinction.
    If the goal of the “Populace” corporation was to ensure humanity’s survival, then the corporation took exactly the wrong approach. Eliminating or decreasing genetic diversity in any species increases the extinction risk; because, a greater proportion of the species share the same weaknesses. For example, corn grown for agricultural purposes has become more monogenetic overtime. This has led to certain plant diseases destroying large sections of the corn fields at a time.
    Even genetic traits that are advantageous at one period can become a fatal weakness in a later era. The polar bear shows a straightforward of this example, the polar bear evolved in such an environment where it was optimized for hunting in a snow-covered environment. Their ancestors were darker colored bears who migrated north into the polar region. The contrast between their fur and the environment made it difficult to camouflage and hunt for prey. The bear population that had moved into to arctic has managed to survive partially because some of them had lighter colored fur than others. If the bear population that had migrated to the polar caps was both mono-genetic and lacked a variation in their genetic code for hair color, it is likely that bear population would not have survived. Therefore we would not have the polar bear. Since recent decreases in the polar ice cap, areas which were covered with snow are now covered with ground of a darker color. Therefore, the white fur of polar bears, once critical for hunting, has become a dangerous hindrance to polar bears hunting in relatively ice-free zones. Just as dark fur is easy to see on white ice, white fur is easy to see on dark ground. As a result, polar bears have an increased risk of extinction. Thankfully, polar bears have not entirely lost their genetic diversity. Polar bears remain fertile with other bear populations with dark colored furs. This has led to the recent emergence of “growler” bears, which have fur colors that share aspects of white fur and darker colored fur. As ice free regions become more common, polar bears and “growler” bears which have naturally darker fur than other arctic bears will tend to survive more frequently. If such conditions continue for long enough, arctic bear evolution will tend to darker colored bears, just as the ice dominated conditions of earlier periods led arctic bear evolution to lighter colored bears.
    Just as the lighter haired bears were able to thrive when introduced to the ice dominated climate, the darker colored “growler” bears can thrive when introduced to low ice or ice-free climates. Therefore the arctic bear can continue to survive through their darker haired progeny, just as the earlier bear population was able to survive through their lighter haired progeny.
    My point is genetic diversity helps life to survive new challenges and environments. Even genetic traits which someone might consider disadvantageous can become lifesaving in the right conditions or circumstances. Therefore, maintaining high genetic diversity tends to improve a species long term survival, even if some traits are considered better than others.

      @mprahastomi2081 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alexander Kracinovich Good points. However, i might disagree with you. Imagine the future where we discover the perfect genetic traits and DNA modification would be possible to do (genetics without any fatal defects and purely perfect traits). A uniform perfect genetic traits would allow us to survive as the Artificial Intelligence would decide which perfect genetic traits that human needs to have in some circumtances. Just wanna share share my thoughts tho as i still believe that progress in science would not be totally bad thing for human. But yeah it is debatable if we look at moral compass on the killing of defects and weak “stock”. Cheers!

    • @johnkeck
      @johnkeck 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Alexander, you are right: species diversity is advantageous. Even if it were possible to have the "perfect" genes, some other species would evolve to take advantage of some weakness (there is aways a weakness) in that monoculture species. Rather like the current monoculture of bananas is susceptible to disease.
      But the growler bears are a bad example. First, it turns out that while they're better adapted than polar bears, they're more poorly adapted than the grizzlies that form the other half of their heritage. Secondly, it turns out all the growler bears found so far are descended from a single female polar bear, one with apparently unusual tastes in her mates.

    • @MikeTheGamer77
      @MikeTheGamer77 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Or, you just screw with the genetic code to give a specific species the traits needed to survive in any environment.

    • @johnkeck
      @johnkeck 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MikeTheGamer77 Yeah, the problem is that thanks to evolution "any environment" keeps changing and adapting to outdo your hack. And you still have a monoculture, so once nature figures out the weakness (and every creature has a weakness), you've got a pandemic.

      @@mprahastomi2081 Perfection itself is an imperfect State. You *can reach* Perfection, but only as very high costs and lots of work.
      *Keeping* Perfection is another sheet of Paper. Only with a permanent monitoring and constant adjusting of the Conditions, you may keep Perfection for a while. *But* ....every System has flaws, no matter how much effort and Ressources you use to design it. At some Point, an error will occur and the whole System will collapse, ending the Perfect state.
      In this Case, that would mean, that the DNA *will* change sooner or later. By Radiation, Evolution, a Virus, Coincidence,..... it will happen gradually - it will be to late when you notice.
      In this Movie, they are basically Clones of an Original Source. Cloning Clones over and over again.....the DNA will cripple and change, ending the Perfection. Since they control everything and think their own DNA is the only one of Value, they dont have Emergency Plans. They all are the same...the same abilities, the same advantages, the same disadvantages. One mutated Bacteria and they are finished.
      Perfection is an Illusion.

The effects and music is turned up so loud that you can't hear any dialogue at all. It's distracting, and really a shame because these are all so good. One in every billion had the genetics with certain drugs for immortality . The rest were controlled as a work force with the aid of drugs for the Elite .There were even fashions in looks like one year all embryo's would altered to be Chinese next year Italian and so on . It was a love story set in a rebellion ,even had a few cyborgs. Some S/F Writers 60/40 years ago were true visionaries as what I was reading at 12 in 1955 onwards has happened or is being worked on now.

    Interestingly eugenics was a huge political movement particularly in the early 1900s in the US. It was primarily the academics who bought into it - of note the very same academics also embraced communism which became a bit of self fulfilling prophecy since China has practiced eugenics for decades now.
    Some of the more notable adherents to eugenics were President Woodrow Wilson, Henry Ford of Ford motors, and Margaret Sanger who founded Planned Parenthood to enact eugenics principles (that for the record is not a political statement, it was its stated purpose).

    What the mean guy says about anything that outgrows it's resources is a pest including us humans... that's super scary cause its horrific and immoral but actually logical and mostly just makes me feel badly for exterminating "pests". I'm bothered.

    They're not slaves? They can choose? Maybe what they eat or the clothing they wear, but not the life they live. They are slaves to the belief that balance must be maintained.
    But what balance? And who determines that balance?
    If they can make babies then why have women at all? If women aren't allowed to bare children then going by what was said, wouldn't women being able to bare children be a defect? A defect that needed to be corrected?
    That man saying they are human was only partly right, in that under a classification of species. But they ceased being true humans when someone decided human only meant being balanced by their standards.
    Because of the balance belief that drives those in control, they can't see that it's the mixing and blending of human Gene's that makes a thriving populace. And unless this is allowed a species stagnates and eventually becomes extent.

      Being human means being able to use one's brain to predict the consequences of one's actions. If we don't achieve balance soon, the "thriving" populace will not be the future but the end of more than just mankind. The clock is ticking and if we wait much longer with effective countermeasures against overpopulation, ours will be a dystopian future like in this film, if we have one at all.

      Wow, that was insightful and intelligent. Where did you get such wisdom. Quoting out of a book and slurs does not show any enlightenment. Start opening your eyes by reading Michael Newtons book "Destiny of Souls : Life between lives" and then you will start getting a clue as to what is really going on behind the curtain! AN NDE or OBE experience would help or just get regressed to a previous life will open your eyes.

    Great film EXCEPT THE AUDIO VOLUME keeps going WAY TOO FAR up and down. Makes it SUPER FRUSTRATING trying to understand the quiet dialog! In order to understand the words at some parts, I had to turn the volume control as high as it would go. Then BAM!!! SOMETHING SO LOUD IT RUMBLES THE HOUSE!!! Rather than adding to the experience it makes me lose focus on the story as I fight the volume trying to keep it to a reasonable level.
